In a nutshell, their pizza is SO VILE, frozen supermarket pizza far outranks their pizza. Their crust is THICK and tastes like rotting cardboard. Whenever I see "NY Pizza" I give it a try, but I am always disappointed... NOT SO TODAY! When I heard the owners accent I knew I was in good hands. The crust was perfect it snapped when I folded the slice. The sauce and cheese were delicious; great pizza does not need toppings. I had to try the Sicilian too! Ray's Pizza does not follow CDC guidelines for their employees and they allow customers to enter their store who are also flouting CDC guidelines and safety protocols. On a recent visit, I observed a number of their staff not wearing masks and a number of customers not wearing masks. When confronted with these facts, the management of this establishment offered up the following rationalizations for putting their customers health at risk: 1) "All of our employees are vaccinated" - The problem with this statement is that based on the latest guidance from the CDC and WHO, being vaccinated does not preclude you from being able to spread COVID to others. 2) We allow our customers the "freedom" to not wear masks based on what they consider safe for themselves. The problem with this rationalization is the simple science of viral transmission. YOU WEAR A MASK TO PRIMARILY PROTECT OTHERS. How many times does this have to be communicated and how many people have to get sick and die before people understand this simple fact? Ray's Pizza in Scottsdale should be shutdown as a safety and health hazard and their management team should be summarily fired post-haste. There is simply no excuse for a restaurant of all places to not be doing EVERYTHING in their power to prevent the spread of this insidious disease which has killed 600,000 Americans and counting. read more

I like coming in here after a night of drinking, for a few slices of pizza and a coke. This place is simple and straight to the point. There's no fuss, you grab your slices and your drink and enjoy some great New York style pizza. Their whole pies are a bit on the pricey side but they are very good and their calzones are always worth a try. The Pizza dough is awesome, crisp with the right amount of chew and of course plenty of cheese and meat toppings to go on them all. Definitely returning again and again for their pizza. read more

Ray's had been a must-have slice for me in NYC. I could barely walk by the place without getting a slice. They set the standard for me for "street pie". So, when they arrived in Arizona, I was thrilled. I've been to the Hayden Rd location a couple dozen times. I have never had a bad slice there. Pretty consistent. Their Sicilian is fairly traditional but has been a bit short on the sauce a few times. I've tried one of their traditional Italian subs in the past and that fell short of being a good NY version. This last visit I found the will to go off the pizza menu and try something else. I ordered the Eggplant Parmesan Hogie, and I was not disappointed at all. A generous stack of very well breaded and fried eggplant slices on a sub roll coated with their great sauce and just enough cheese. This was legit. This Italian boy was pleased. Love their garlic knots, dripping with garlicky butter. In my many visits there I have experienced some of the less than cordial interactions from staff. Not as well received as it is in the NY Burroughs. My last several visits I have experienced warm and friendly service. Especially so on this last visit. read more

Rude and disgusting customer service. First time picking up food from this place because it's Christmas and nothing open so I gave it a chance. My wife picked up food and they didn't have the order correct nor the sauce that was requested. When my wife asked for the sauce the cook shoved the sauce at her and told her to get out. Now I could take a different approach to this situation but I'm definitely not trying to sit in a jail cell and my wife said don't worry about it. I guarantee he wouldn't have acted that way towards a man. Also the pizza was complete trash and the wings under cooked. This is by far my favorite pizza place! I'll drive across town if I'm craving pizza because no one else does the white, New York style pizza like they do! They add fresh garlic and spinach for me to just make it the way I like. Even the plain cheese and pepperoni pizza is delicious. I work at one of the best pizzerias in the Valley, so I don't often eat pizza on my days off. However, I've had many friends rave about Ray's, and I happened to find myself in North Scottsdale today, so I figured I'd stop in and see what all the hype was about. I decided to keep it simple and just order a slice of pepperoni. I have to admit, this place makes damn good pizza. Pizza by the slice can often be hit-or-miss, since you never know how long it's been sitting around. The fact that I stopped in around 3pm during "off" hours and still got a quality slice speaks volumes. I'd definitely like to return and get a made-to-order pie. I just wish it wasn't so far away. My only quibble was the price. It set me back almost $4 for a single one-topping slice, which felt a little steep, but I don't have a problem paying a little more for high quality food, which this definitely is. The crust was light and crispy and the cheese tasted like high quality, whole milk mozzarella. As someone who has worked for numerous pizzerias over the past 30+ years, I'd definitely recommend Ray's for a quality NY-style pizza with just the right amount of East Coast attitude. read more

As you walk in the place, step immediately to your right. The main thing is to keep the line moving. Announce your order with a loud clear voice... "I would like one slice of pepperoni, one slice of pepperoni and sausage, and a third slice of pepperoni and mushroom" It's very important not to embellish on your order. No extraneous comments. No questions. No compliments. At most, you can say... "Can I get that extra crispy?". If he gives you 'that' look, just drop it an move on. Then you hold out your money and step to the left. If using a credit card, insert it into the chip reader on the counter. Take your receipt and find yourself a booth. They will call out the pizza order when its ready, so listen up, yous! read more

The name Ray's is used by over a hundred places in New York. In fact, several NY papers and TV stations have tried over the years to locate the "original" Ray's and as far as I know they've failed. One of the Ray's contenders in NY had a Yelp review that started: "... can be summed up in 4 words "It's better than Sbarro" Tough crowd! So what exactly is a New York pizza? Well it has a very thin crust, that when you pick it up, the front flops down. That's why New Yorkers fold it in half. The better tasting ones seem to use San Marzano tomatoes and a better type of mozzarella. A few dust their pizza with oregano or EVOO. This Ray's is the closest to that New York pizzeria feel and atmosphere. It has those glass counters that you will find up there. It even has what we call Sicilian slices, or "squares". This Ray's tries real hard and for the most part it succeeds in creating a New York pie. So it's "A-OK" in Yelp-ese. In my previous review, I said that NYPD makes me feel like I'm waiting for an E train to Queens; whereas Ray's feels more upper east side-ish. I still believe that's still a fair assessment, though their crusts have suffered over time. On some nights, depending on who is making the pies, these two places might only be slightly better than Sbarro. Sadly, the crust can sometimes be as hard as cardboard. So after two and a half years, which one do I believe is closest to tasting like a New York pie? Well... it may be the nearby Philly steak place Corleone's. Go figure! read more

Love Ray's pizza. Been eating here since i was in high school, and im almost 37 now. If you want a classic new york pizza this is the spot. I'm not a big fan of the toppings, but the plain cheese pizza is perfect, especially cooked well done. Wings are great, and the prices are how pizza should be these days. If you dont want a whole pie and like a crispy pizza, i suggest getting it by the slice. The ny thin and the Sicilian by the slice are so good. The reheat in their oven makes it perfectly crispy! They have some great no frills pasta dishes, love the eggplant parm, and their subs are really good, especially for the price point. It's really hard to find that type of value that matches the taste. Don't expect the best customer service, but I dont care. I honestly love their dry humor and attitude, and if you treat them with respect, you'll get that back. They are very old school, which can make you love them or hate them. I'm never pressed. They make a great pizza, so I could care less if they don't kiss your ass. They know people will still show up for the food regardless. The staff and customer service are unbelievably horrible and the experience has consistently been below par despite carrying the Ray's name. I'm actually shocked at how this location is still operating and the customers have tolerated the poor attitudes of the staff. Worst pizza we've ever had! When we nicely complained to a staff member, she sent the owner over to our table. He was EXTREMELY RUDE, didn't care that the pizza was horrible, and just walked away. We then carried the pizza to the front counter to show him the pizza was ALL dough with very little cheese and sauce, nothing like New York style pizza should taste like, he just ignored us. Worst place ! Pizza is just fair but management is the worst. We called ahead to make sure they were open. We walk in 30 min before closing . The guy took our order and our money than said we close at 10,you have to be out of her in ten minutes. We grab a table an start eating. The most rude and illiterate man comes storming out of the back and starts yelling at us to get out. We are closed don't get comfortable. They were open to take our money but closed to let us eat our food. I am 63 years old and have never ever been treated so rudely. He yelled this is my restaurant get out!!! It may be his but it's going to be a lonely place if he continues to treat his customer so rudely!!! I'm not the only one many complaints about the owner and management. read more

These guys are true Italians serving up authentic New York style pizza by the slice (and of course the whole pie) & everything that you're craving when you think "New York Italian Pizzeria"! (See the photo of the ovens, counter, their Top Props awards for Best Pizza, etc. to get a taste.) My usual is the Lunch Special for only $8.50: Salad, Soda & Slice (If I'm bringing it home, I'll get a Whole Pizza or Sausage & Cheese hot sandwich), but today I thought I'd switch it up and try a Veggie slice. (Check out the photo of this slice of pizza!) It is absolutely loaded with sweet red and green peppers, "meaty" mushrooms, onions, etc.! I can't believe that a slice of veggie pizza could fill me up so much that I didn't get the Cannoli. I'll post a pic of their Cannoli next time. If you've read any of my other reviews, you know that I'm a stickler for cleanliness, and I review for Dining Grades, so I inspect everything. **Don't go here if you have a service animal** I walked in with two colleagues on Monday at lunchtime, one of them has a medical service dog. We ordered, paid, and the owner asked if my colleagues animal was a service animal. My colleague responded yes. The owner demanded to see the paperwork and before he had a chance to get the service animal card out of his wallet, the owner rudely told him he can eat outside. My food came up and I said, since he just threw out one of our party, I'd rather not eat here and asked for a refund. The owner looked at me and started yelling at me that he's been in business 50 years and he doesn't need anyone to tell him anything. I told him I'm also a local business owner for several decades, so i know what treating customers with respect is like. He told us all to get the hell out of there and don't come back. We have been in there many times over the past year with the same service animal, so I don't know where this came from, but completely unacceptable for an owner to yell at customers after impatiently demanding service animal paperwork. Even customers behind us were telling the owner he was out of line. Its unfortunate that bull-headed business owners still exist, but its safe to say we'll never go back again. The owner acted like an egotistical, entitled, jerk that treats customers like trash and doesn't care for the law of service animals. He did NOT have a right to do what he did, and for that, we would give less than a 1 star rating if it was available. I cannot believe that this great pizza place does not have a better rating on Yelp.I have been here several times and every time has been great. This definitely reminds me of New York Pizza. Actually this is New York Pizza. At least it's exactly the same to me and I have been to New York and had NY Pizza many many times. Ray's Pizza is genuine authentic New York style and I have to say it some of the best I've ever had. It's fresh it's tasty it's good and the people who work here are pleasant and friendly.I have to say that I recommend every single slice that they have here and I have had almost every single slice that they have here. Charged me $90 for one pizza and 2 slices while missing part of my order; they said the internet was down and charged another card which was then charged for a different amount than what was originally charged on my card. Essentially, I got cheated twice; called back told I was wrong and to bring a receipt when I wasn't given one while someone I was with had an order of roughly $8 & they received a receipt. I went in and they repeated my order back and told me a price and it was $10 cheaper than the first charge they fought me on it. Until I was given an old slice! NEVER COME HERE GO TO NYPD OR BARROS! Ok this used to be my favorite pizza outside of New York. Now it seems they're hiring all teenagers with little to no restaurant experience. I realize everyone needs to start somewhere and learning on the job can be difficult. Our experience tonight was horrible. We called in our order ahead of time as we were in a bit of a rush to make an appointment. Arrived 15 minutes later and the girl that took our order was like "Oh, what was your order again?" She hadn't even put it in yet. Our food ended up taking forever and the pizza was cold. The owner acted like it was our fault and made us show him our receipt to prove we actually paid before he would give us to go boxes. Uh you do realize the bill gets paid at the counter when arriving right? What if I had chosen not to get a receipt? We have been going to Rays at this location for years. Their pizza has been sub par lately but we have stuck by them to support the business. Tonight was the end. The manager yelled and screamed at us because we asked why the price of our order was $25 more than it was in the past. The manager started yelling at us and belittling my wife and I with our young children standing there. Swearing and telling us to go to the West Side if we didn't like it. Acted terribly inappropriate in every way. We tried to be nice and he kept yelling and screaming. My kids were crying and he kept swearing and yelling. We will never go here again and will never recommend their place to anyone. We called the police, they went to the business and checked to make sure the employees were ok. Do not get pizza here. There are a lot of places to go, do not choose a place like this that doesn't care at all about their customers. 1 star is too many. read more
