Let me preface this review by saying that, happily, I've spent some time in Turkey, traveling much of the coast as well as through Istanbul, and that it was one of the best culinary experiences of my life, hands down. So I'm a little picky when it comes to Turkish food. However, I must eat at Real Donor once a week; it's sublime. Their ambiance is a lot like a classic, low-key Turkish locanta (like a family-style place with pre-made food). It's low-key but pleasant. I cannot recommend enough the pink sultan, the dolmas which rival any which I had in Turkey, the appetizer platter, the spinach pie, or the chicken donor platter or really, anything with chicken donor. Also, the falafels are great. You just cannot go wrong here. They have good prices and are nice folks, and this restaurant is very, very much an authentic little slice of Turkey. Good Falafels- though I prefer mine in a Pita as opposed to a wrap. The wrap was fresh and not greasy. Vegetables inside the wrap were a little stringy and should have been chunkier to match the consistency of the falafel balls. Outside patio looked inviting but the weather wasn't permitting. Inside there were a few flies buzzing around. Nice people at the counter. Would go back again- 3rd best falafel in the north bay. read more

There is something addictive about the food here. We've gotten take out three times in the last two weeks, and I'm already thinking about our next order. The combination plates are generous-- lots of meat, rice, and salad with a wonderful yogurt sauce-- but the thing I'm hooked on is the wrap. The chicken, beef, and lamb are all flavorful and tender. They're wrapped up with pickled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and yogurt sauce. Very hearty and flavorful. Dessert-wise, the semolina cake is wonderful, and the baklava is the best I've ever had: light, crisp, not cloying. Prices are more than fair. The interior of the restaurant is, as other reviewers have noted, a bit odd... basically low budget. The owners are friendly and warm. Real Doner is now in our regular rotation! read more

We got the appetizer combo & it was very bland. The hummus in particular tasted like something you could buy at your local grocery store. Too bad. My wife and I just ate here for the first time. Pretty good, but I don't think I'd say great. Service was friendly. I say the $ rating is off. We spent $30 for Dolma, Adan Kabob, Falafel, and one Pepsi. A little pricey for the ambiance and order at the counter service. With that said, we'll go back to try the Gyro. We'll let you know how it goes. One last thing, seating will be tight in the winter if they don't do more to weatherproof the patio. read more

Well-familiar with Persian fare, I never had Turkish cuisine so I was pretty excited. The menu featured many wrap/sandwiches and platters - all of which sounded great. Instead of going with a doner (same idea as a gyro), I couldn't resist trying the chicken shish kabab platter. Two seasoned skewers of chicken breast, some rice and side salad, plus a roll of some kind. Came with a yogurt sauce. Took it to go. Maybe it's because I was so used to Persian food over the last decade, but.... I didn't enjoy my first-ever Turkish meal. Not saying it was bad - I just.. didn't enjoy it. Ok, the chicken was grilled well. It was tender and kind of tasty. I didn't like the rice pilaf (i'm assuming that's what it was) - it was way too salty. It was also browned - I guess I was expecting white basmati rice. The salad was doused in what I'll assume was supposed to be a basic oil & vinegar, however - I don't know if they didn't shake the dressing bottle or what, but all I seemed to get was oil. To add insult to injury, I was so hungry that my fork made little holes in the bottom of the styrofoam to-go tray - and the effing oil got all over my desk. I know: HA ha! At least if there was some vinegar, it would have made for a decent cleaning solution. And the yogurt sauce wasn't that great either... I was expecting (hoping for) a garlic-infused tangy yogurt, maybe with some cucumber a la tzatziki. Theirs had some kind of red spice added to it... or maybe it was tomoto paste? It dominated the yogurt in my opinion. Yeah, I wasn't too impressed with this meal. However, there are a few other items on the menu that I'd like to try before giving this place a permanent rating. 3 stars is generous for now. read more

Not impressed... Ordered a Greek salad, hummus and a falafel wrap. Never got the hummus, the salad was iceberg, and falafel was totally bland. I've had much better falafel for half the price. Place was super busy and no server checked on us after we got our food. We were pretty much ignored. When we went to pay, they tried to charge us for the hummus that we never got. Went there for lunch with a friend. They got their food and I waited and never got mine. I finally went up to just have it wrapped to go when it was ready . It was never put in. I thought maybe it needed extra cooking time so I didn't ask about it. There were only a handful of tables but noone noticed I didn't have my food? Then got charged full price. I thought they could at least comped my iced tea or a free piece of baklava or something for completely forgetting my food. Took my 15 year old son Alec for Dinner. I ordered the Kofte on Rice (Turkish Meatballs) Alec had chicken shish kebabs. While it took 30+ minutes to receive our food, we ended up with very large portions, and were were very satisfied after our meal. The guy who owns Real Doner is very friendly. Location is a bit strange, next to an auto repair place, they have screened it off with trellis to cosy it up a bit. Only 2 or 3 people there at 7pm Sunday night. One person was getting very impatient after waiting a long time to pick up her food. For a good quality basic meal this is a good place to stop, prices for the value are fair. read more

Ok, the food is alright, better than now-defunct Daphne's but Pita Cafe in Rohnert Park is much better. Prices are on the high side, about $15/person. For that price most of the sides are normally included with most entree dishes in Turkish deli's in the Bay Area. The other issue is that Ozkan, the owner, needs to know that wearing gloves when handling food is to keep the food clean and not his hands...he needs to change or remove them when handling money. What gets me the most with open kitchens is the sanitary issues...WASH YOUR HANDS when going from cashiering to bussing tables to grabbing loaves of bread/lavash/desserts putting it on clean dishes for your customers. I hope this yelp gets to you and I will check you out in several months to see if anything has improved. Nice try though. read more

So happy to have this place in my neighborhood. I love the falafel and the appetizer platter. The new hot bar with all the vegetarian selections is a nice addition. Love that they have a little market with things like boxes of Turkish delights. Plenty of vegetarian food for me, lots of meat for meat lovers. read more

Wasn't at all from the reviews what I expected. Counter staff was awesome though. But the food was old tasting and generally just blah. I ate there last night and today I stopped by a place that had a sign "Turkish Food" on bodega ave it's a quick stop AND oh my gosh it was 10 x better. Fresh tasty I had the lamb kabob plate and it was soooo good. The menu was short but cheap. Forgo Doner and go to the quick mart it's on the way to Bodega Bay. Promise you will not regret. read more

I recommend you trying Real Doner and here are my 3 main reasons why! 1. It's the service. All the employees at Doner are very nice. The pleasant attitude makes you feel at home in a way. 2. It's their food. Doner is traditionally Turkish food and I recommend their chicken adena and kebab adena! Their bread is delicious and so is their apple tea! You can't find their apple tea here they import their tea from Turkey. 3. And finally, the location. I took 15 people here on a friday night. I of course, made a reservation with the daughter of the owners. She is a doll. Sweet, smart, helpful and so understanding. I explained that while they do offer wine, my wino parents and their friends weren't going to be having the small selection. No problem, they charged us a fee for the entire evening of supply our own wine. We wanted to bring our dogs (I know, we are freaks) and they offered the patio can serve as the dog hang out area. We ordered a ridiculous amount of food and every single person- old, young, vegetarian, carnivore, picky, not picky- were happy. There are not many places where that would be the outcome. This place is my go -to when I don't feel like cooking, but more importantly when I DO feeling like eating. Personally- I love the chicken kabob plate, the app's are all amazing. Real Doner was like a mirage at first.... Leaving Dillion Beach, hungover and starving we headed back to Sacramento. My phone was dead so I was unable to YELP something yummy. We figured we would stop at some "Denny's" or something just for some sustenance to make it through the drive. Then we spotted it, a quick flash off the corner of the main drag. "WTF? Did that just say Mediterranean Turkish food?!" The fasted U turn ever brought me to the Oasis! The business looks a little odd because it used to be a grocery store. Their drinks are in cold storage cabinets. The decor is plain. An article on the wall tells a story about the family, they moved from the bay area for a change of pace. It's sweet. The food was delicious. I had these things called Cigarette Borek. Light flaky dough rolled up, stuffed with feta cheese, parsley and deep fried!! With some sort of yogurt dipping sauce. ( I think I just drooled a little at the memory) Sooooo good!! I ordered a falafel it was alright (I'm very picky about my falafel). We had hummus it was good, but the fresh baked bread that accompanied it was really really good!! My hubby ordered #30 Real Doner Gyro that had lamb, chicken and beef. He said "that meat kicked ass!" Guess he liked it too! It is a little pricey, but good food is worth it. With lots of leftovers we got back on the road very happy travelers. read more

My husband's from Serbia so it was with glee we found the ad for Real Doner in the Petaluma Best Values thingie we get in our mailbox. Would never have known it was there otherwise. Anyone who says it's not authentic is full of ****. This is Yum to the nth degree. We pigged out. Four of us ate for $60 including desserts and tip and had leftovers for tomorrow's lunch. And we're STUFFED. Really, REALLY miss Serbian Burek...the cigarette borek looked like it might be close, but it wasn't...and that was really okay. These things are delish...little deep-fried rolled up herby feta yummies. Oh, man, if I hadn't made such a pig of myself on the combo doner plate, I might've stuffed a couple more in my face. This place isn't about imitation 'atmosphere'. It's like eating in Eastern Europe. You go to hang out with friends, and laugh, and drink turkish coffee and nibble and munch your way through an afternoon. This is the way eating should be done. Park on the street, eat yourself into bliss, then take a walk with the kiddos to Walnut park two blocks away...then go back for dessert and more coffee. Stopped by on a road trip for dinner before continuing on. We were looking for something quick and easy but did not want fast food. Yelped places close by and saw this Turkish place. When we drove past it we saw quite a few people and decided to give it a shot. The moment we walked in, we were pleasantly greeted and quickly sat at a table that was cleaned for us. We ordered the need and lamb doner wrap which was delicious and very well prepared. We asked for some hot sauce and they had a great homemade one with a small kick to it.
