I feel as though I keep going back to red 36 for the views much more than the food. It's a lovely spot, beautiful decor and it's ok a dock basically overlooking mystic river. The issue I keep having is that the food is never as good as I want it to. I love the french fries, they are double fried fresh cut style. The last visit I had a burger and it was over cooked, under seasoned, and all of the toppings were too big to be enjoyed. I actually had to take the onion and tomato off in order to actually bite the burger. My other criticism was that service was incredibly slow. I would gladly have ordered more drinks or food if the waitress had been any faster to come by. It's just such a shame because it's such a lovely spot with great potential. Don't waste your time going to this absolute nightmare in Mystic. Save your money and go to so many other better restaurants. They do not know how to treat their customers. They seated us at a dark dingy table with absolutely terrible lighting. We could not even read the menu. When we requested for our table to be changed they were rude and dismissive. We really wanted to like Red 36 but found everything underwhelming. The view is the best part but their generic top 40s dance/pop soundtrack ruins the otherwise elevated ambiance and decor. The food was very hit or miss. The Caesar salad tasted like a grocery store salad, the ahi tuna spring rolls had fully cooked tuna even though the price and ingredients (including sushi rice) suggested it would be sushi grade and raw. The result was a dry spring roll with an odd texture. Thankfully the lobster roll did not disappoint and was the star of the lunch. The service wasn't unpleasant but not particularly friendly either. For dinner, there was lots to chose from but my pick was the Seafood Paella (Shrimp, Clams, Mussels, Chorizo, Roasted Chicken, Saffron Risotto, English Peas, Roasted Tomato) Had many great recommendations and not sure if this one made the cut. Definitely worth checking out if your in the area. With outside seating, had a pretty cool view of the Amtrack Train Bridge that revolved to allow for boats to pass as well as trains. Definitely worth stopping in of you enjoy seafood while in the Mystic area. Probably would have given this place a 5 star rating, if not for the reservation system that they use. They claim they don't take reservations, which i can live with and was told first come first serve. Arrived around 6 pm on a Friday and it was packed, which was expected with a wait of 1 hr 45 minutes. They have several bars to enjoy a cocktail which always makes the time go quick. What annoyed me was there was an open table for two on the outside deck during our entire wait. I asked about the empty table, and was advised the host / hostesses were making phon calls to fill the table, yet my phone never rang. They wait was less the 1hr and 45 minutes and we got the call after about an hour. We were seated outside as requested, but on a side patio on the second floor. The area was nice and scenic, yet the table on the main deck was still vacant. I asked if we could move to the table that was empty for close to an hour now, and was told no. Clearly, despite claim that they don't take reservations, they apparently do. Opened at 11:30 and at 11:45, I was given a choice table along the wharf at an open wall. Within the hour, the entire place was quickly fulled. Appeared to be a popular luncheon place for nicely dressed locals. Not only was the ambiance on a beautiful pleasant day ; but also, the food was delish. I chose their clam chowder , which is served one-size in their mug and wasnt disappointed, especially since I likethick n creamy 'chowdah'. Our aim was happy hour oysters and we were able to place happy hour food and drink orders at the outside tables which we appreciated. Happy hour food is easily 1/2 price from the regular menu and draft beer and house wine is also discounted. We had 2 dozen gorgeous salty briny juicy oysters. Fresh and plump, not pre-shucked, $1 each a steal. We paired them with two drafts & we were set. The outdoor seating was still do-able and not too cold, the inside had windows open and also looked to be safely distanced. All staff followed strict covid protocol, we felt safe eating there. This was my favorite place since it opened. Now the staff is horrible, food was not good at all. We were cramped in a corner and the noise level we couldn't hear the guests across the table. Server brought wrong meals, by the time correct ones arrived, we had to get it to go because we had guests that had other plans afterwards. If you're thinking of going anywhere else in mystic for dinner... stop. This is possibly one of my top restaurants I've ever been to. They told us it was going to be an hour and 15 min wait and we didn't mind because we brought drinks onto the beautiful deck and looked at the peaceful marina until we were seated, which only took about 40 min in the end. The apps were amazing, highly recommend the street tacos (shrimp was our favorite). Drinks and food came quick too which is always helpful after a long day of walking and sight seeing. I got the seared scallop entree and my boyfriend got the fish and chips and both were equally amazing in both presentation and taste. Very disappointed with the food. The fish and chips, we ordered was not fried at the correct temperature, batter had absorbed so much oil, that it was oozing oil when cut through. Badly done. My husband and I decided on a day trip to Mystic, and started our morning with Mystic Boat Adventures. I knew we would be hungry for lunch afterwards and every time we had been in the area in the past I had always wanted to give Red 36 a try. We would never get in because it was always a last minute thing and they had no availability. After our boat adventure we called the restaurant to see if we needed reservations. The hostess told us that they weren't accepting reservations but we could just walk up as it was first come first serve. We gave it a shot and were so pleasantly surprised that it wasn't packed, especially mid day at lunch time! We did ask for a table either indoors or in the shade, it was a scorcher outside! The hostess told us they had one they just needed to clean that was outside but in a shaded spot. We were lucky to grab this table, it was the perfect location right by the boats. Folks coming in after us were told it would be another 30 minutes to be seated. I was in the mood for a refreshing but sweeter drink and I didn't see any on the menu that appealed to me (although they sounded great and different I just wasn't in the mood). I asked the waitress for a suggestion and she said they could make a flavored mojito. I opted for a strawberry mojito and it was perfectly refreshing. I appreciated that it was made with fresh fruit and it syrup. My husband got a draft sour beer which he enjoyed. For an appetizer we chose the Thai Peanut Calamari. It was really yummy, although I could have used a tad more sauce and maybe some crushed peanuts? I would order it again regardless! I also had my heart set on a lobster roll so that was what I chose with a side of French fries. I have to say the lobster roll wasn't on the top of my list as far as all of the lobster I have enjoyed in New England. It had a little too much mayo. I probably wouldn't order it again although it wasn't like it was terrible I just have had a lot better. My husband ordered Salmon burger which he really enjoyed. We both liked our fries as well. We are crazy and order ranch every time we have fries, but they did not have ranch- we got blue cheese instead and it was good! If you are in the area and can get in, I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to try out Red 36. The location is wonderful with nice views of all of the boats/yachts! Everything was amazing from the food, service, and views! A couple things not pictured that we also got was the crispy bang bang shrimp which was SO DELICIOUS, the Mexican corn (not the best but still really good), and the Mexican salad. The salmon was just ok and paella was actually really good with perfect spice. The bad - The service was slow. Wine glasses were very small almost to the point where we should have ordered 2. This place has consistently good food with atmosphere to match. Right on the water and typically packed, the vibe is half the experience. We stopped in at dinner time and there was an hour and a half wait for a table. Good thing we had ordered 25 minutes earlier and were simply picking up our to go order. The parking situation was a bit confusing and very crowded. Perhaps some better signage and one ways would help the situation. We did not meet a whole bunch of staff but the bartender who took our order over the phone and the one who gave us the food (same person?) was very nice and helpful. Dinner was great! I had the pork chop Milanese and it was perfectly crispy and the arugula salad was fresh and delicious. My daughter had the fish and chips which she said iwas fantastic. Our third guest had the R36 burger and he really enjoyed the flavor, it was pretty juicy so get extra napkins. At this time when lots of folks are getting things to go HOW a place packs their food really makes a difference. R36 did a great job keeping everything in an appropriate container. Fries in their own bag, salad in a different container from the hot pork chop. Well done! This was our first stop at R36 and we will be back. Maybe next time we will dine in. read more

I'm going to preface my remarks by acknowledging that the challenges faced by restaurants recently have been monumental. I spent quite a few years in the industry when I was younger and, like many former service people, I tend to be very forgiving and understanding especially given the current climate. Later in life I traveled extensively for business and have dined at hundreds of restaurants from coast to coast. I seldom bother to leave revues unless I'm especially pleased with the service, menu, presentation or atmosphere. I do rely on revues while on the road but do not discount an establishment simply because they have a few less-than-stellar ratings. Everyone and every establishment can have "off days"! Most diners have experienced a slightly cold meal, warm drink, under/overcooked entree, grouchy waitstaff etc. That's life. I am going to lay out my experience at Red36 and let you decide if it's where you want to spend your money. A few nights ago, my wife, myself and two other couples stopped in for dinner. We were staying at a neighboring marina and looked forward to trying this restaurant out. We have all eaten at many other establishments in the area, with great results. Even though it was a busy evening, we were able to get seated very quickly. Our waiter informed us that he was new on the job and would do his best to answer any questions about the menu. He was GREAT! It took some time to get our drinks but seeing how busy they were it was understandable. The views from our table were tough to beat! The dishes we ordered ranged from appetizers to daily specials and for the most part were well prepared. The frightening event involved my wife's order of a lobster. The lobster was steamed and partially split open. When my wife fully opened the shell, the inside was filled with a rotten, black mess - a sure sign that the lobster was dead before it was cooked. I don't think you can overstate the danger of preparing and serving spoiled shellfish. We called the waiter over and after showing him the dish, he replied "that's disgusting, I'll get the manager". The manager explained that she would remove the dish from the bill and would we like another lobster. We said "no". Mistakes are mistakes i.e. mixing up a side dish, forgetting a drink order, overcooking a meal BUT, someone in that kitchen either knowingly cooked and served this lobster or could not tell a live lobster from a dead one. In either case this could have resulted in serious illness. Thankfully, my wife was only sick for the balance of the evening (having eaten part of one claw). We also received one dessert "on the house". I am not trying to denigrate this restaurant. Given the location, it's unlikely that anyone will take notice with the captive audience they enjoy but I feel an obligation to alert them to a serious need for improvement. Personally, I will not be returning any time soon. read more

If you'd imagine all the best seafood you have no access to living on the mainland, you'd guess what this place is like. The views here are almost enough to warrant a visit. Gorgeous open windows on all sides of the restaurant, and contemporary decor. Tier 1 raw bar is excellent. It was enough for me to sample clam, oyster, and shrimp with fresh sauces. It was $20, fresh with great presentation, and enough to be filling. I highly recommend it! We also ordered a Caesar salad (my lunch-mate won't touch seafood). Delicious. I had the Hanger Steak with the fries and that was amazing, cooked to my liking. My boyfriend had the scallop entree, which was delicious but a very small portion, only 4 scallops. For an expensive entree, he was hoping for a couple more scallops on his plate...he was hungry after we left. My friend and her boyfriend shared the lobster carbonara, shrimp flat bread, and a Tier 1 of clams, oysters, and shrimp. They loved everything. We could tell the hostess' were a little overwhelmed when we walked in by the looks on their faces. The waitress we had seemed a little scattered. My boyfriend and I absolutely love seafood and anywhere by the water. Because of this Mystic and Red 36 have become some of our favorite summer spots! The aesthetic of the restaurant is nautical and classy. We've only sat outside (right on the water) and have always had excellent service. I LOVE that they have a little jar of oyster crackers on the table. They are always the first thing my boyfriend and I go for when sitting down LOL The menu isn't huge, but there are plenty of options from the raw bar, sandwiches, salads, small plates, etc. The drinks are excellent as well, there are usually some specials whenever we come in which have always been great. We've tried the Tier 1 (4 clams, 3 oysters and 2 shrimp), PEI Mussels (these have got to be some of the best flavored mussels I haw tried - the sausage in the broth is to die for), lobster roll, blackened fish tacos and lump crab cakes entree. No fear, the docks and slips are a beautiful backdrop to this amazing restaurant. TIP: CALL AHEAD FOR A RESERVATION! It's lively inside the dining rooms and I can tell it has the potential to get loud. There's a separate area/bar/lounging room that we were told gets retrofitted for the winter into a Ski Chalet - complete with chair lift and dress the part competitions. It ha some great seating areas with fire pit tables too. The food was amazing! We started with a variety of oysters on the half shell and then had the wild mushroom risotto with seared scallops.
