Met a friend for lunch who recommended Red Chopstix, having been there before. We were seated immediately which was nice. I ordered the L15 lunch: soup, egg roll, white rice and veggies. The veggies are bland, I had to add soy sauce and red chili oil to try and add some flavor. The portion was also fairly small. Keep it mind it was a lunch combo but for those who are used to leftovers (which my friend had with her sesame chicken and rice combo), the veggies may not meet your goal of two meals in one. I have always loved this place! However, my recent take out order was really bad. The pork fried rice had very little pork and lots of egg. The sweet and sour pork was tiny pieces of pork in big big balls od fried batter, 2 pieces of pineapple and a few small onion pieces no bell pepper. The mushu chicken was just as sad. Love the place and the food. Every dishes had so much flavors. The store changes ownership just a couple months ago but that doesn't stop with their amazing service. They are very attentive and always tries to help you. Some of the dishes are not available in the pictures because the owner will add them soon. We have always been regulars at Happy Garden until the pandemic hit when we would just order take-out from them. Since then, they don't offer dine-in service and they may not. We needed to find a dine-in restaurant to fulfill our cravings for Chinese food. This place hits the spot. We had Peking pork, Sesame chicken, Kung Pao Three delight, pork fried rice and pork chow mein. The food was delicious. The Kung Pao had a nice bite to it. The Sesame Chicken was moist and flavorful. The Peking spareribs are tasty, but be cautious of small rib bones. The fried rice was fluffy, moist, and packed with flavor. The chow mein was delectable. Wow, it has been quite awhile Red Chopsticks. I haven't been to this establishment since high school and I had lots of nostalgia being back. Lol My friends and I were famished after walking around Elk Grove Park for a few hours and this was the perfect spot to settle our stomachs. When we arrived there were 3 other parties in the restaurant and we were told to seat ourselves, no problem. We slid into a booth and were quickly helped. They have lots of specials available. You could go with their basic lunch special that's served with an entree & white rice or fried rice or you can order their combo plates that come with an entree, chow mein and white or fried rice. Both specials come with soup and an egg roll. I had their spicy mandarin chicken with white rice and chow mein. The chicken was perfectly fried and the sauce was delicious. It was spicy but not over powering. I love their chow mein. It's seasoned perfectly and not overly oily. After 4 years, the rice is still dry. Lol, next time I'll just opt for all chow mein. My friend had their Mongolian beef but it should really be called Mongolian onions. Lol, way too many veggies and not enough beef. I tried my other friends sweet & sour shrimp and wasn't really impressed. The tiny shrimp was over battered to make it look bigger and it smelt overly fishy. I know that's a strange thing to say but it was an overly powering scent. The sweet & sour sauce was pretty standard. I love their egg rolls. I'm pretty sure they're just veggie but man are they tasty! Also fried to perfection and aren't overly oily. This is my "Go to" place for food delivery. I live just down the street. I usually order Egg Foo Young , egg rolls and Honey glazed Ribs. Food is always hot and fresh. Their portions are very good and usually I have enough food for more than one meal. The egg rolls and items that are supposed to be crispy are crispy. Really really really really good Chinese food. They have everything you're looking for: Mushu, wonton soup, orange chicken, you name it! We've been trying Chinese places all over Elk Grove, and some are great, some are not so good, but red chopsticks is number one on the list. Wow this place went down hill. Egg foo young was a pile of bean sprouts with flour poured over it. $15 sizzling plate was half full. Chow fun was super greasy and half of it was onions. Wings were pretty good. Service was horrible. They gave us a napkin and fork each as our table setting for dinner. We had to ask for real plates which were sticky. Had to get our own table setting napkins on our own. They gave us to-go chop sticks. The Bill came and they charged gratuity for table of 3 adults and 2 toddlers. I asked the lady if they changed rules and add mandatory tip now. She said no. No tip add. Then she seen tab and took it and then talked to the girl with glasses and came back with tab and say yes tip add now. There's no sign that says they charge for that now. We ordered the egg rolls and they were perfectly crunchy and delicious, they did not disappoint. My husband ordered the Kung pao with 3 meats and loved it. I got the combination plate with chicken chow mein, fried rice and lemon chicken and all 3 items were outstandingly delicious. Well i continue my quest for good Chinese food, but this was not it. Tonight the chow mein and fried rice were very bland. The general chicken had jalepeno slices, never had it like that before and had no kind of sauce. Also the orange chicken dry over saturated with fried oil taste and again no sauce. My husband and I found Red Chopstix literally the day we moved to Elk Grove from the Bay Area. We love(d) their food from day one and we've lived here for almost two years. They've been our mainstay (and only) Chinese food restaurant all this time and we've been there many times since. However (and I really hate to say this), the last time we dined there about a month ago we were really disappointed. All the items we ordered tasted the same and lacked flavor. We wondered if they had a new chef or if it was just a fluke. We're not quite ready to go back there, but we may at some point. First of all service is poor. There was no one in when we came in for lunch. We where told to sit ourself which is fine and did. Then another customer came in seated themselves and they got there drinks and order first. We ordered the orange chicken, sweet/sour pork lunch special and a fried calamari. Flavor is to sweet, the orange chicken taste like a sweet general chicken, the sweet/sour pork was way to sweet and the calamari was all bread. Worst of all, the rice was not good. How the heck can you mess up on rice. I just hope it wasn't someone else rice. Will not come back again. Update: we ate lunch around 1230pm, 8 hours later I'm still full and stomach hurts. That was the only meal I had all day, sweet/sour pork and fried calamari. I believe they added MSG. My stomach hurts and it bloated, MSG does that to me. Whenever I come to Elk Grove, CA, I like visiting Red Chopstix. It is much better than other food I have tasted. When food of this type is heavily sauced and fried, it takes away from the flavor, which Red Chopstix seems to lean on. However, it is freshly made using excellent ingredients. Everything tastes fresh such as the celery, carrots, soup, rice and the chicken. I had 3 adults and a 2 year old in my group. We ordered the $9.95 Family Dinner times 3 with Ice Tea. ($36.47 Total). This was a feast and we ended up taking some of it home. We would have taken more but the 2 Year old loved the food. After eating one plate, we had to give her another. The favorite was the Chicken Chow Mein. The sweet and sour pork was great, but had a little more breading than I liked. Cashew chicken (really fresh), fried rice, egg rolls, egg drop soup-really good. The restaurant, including the restrooms, was very clean. The service was phenomenal-we asked for nothing. Love love love the chow mein! I like when the noodles are thicker. I tried lemon chicken for the first time and I think I found a new favorite! Lemon chicken is light and crispy and saucy. The beef had a good amount of flavor and a nice little kick. I wish they had given a little bit more compared to how much chicken was in the plate. But portions are definitely a good size, enough to overeat and enough for lunch the next day. read more
