I can't even begin to speak about this slice cake it was so amazing. I also ordered the caramel brownie and it was insanely delicious. I often order brownies and slices of cake from other top bakeries and all I taste is sugar, that is not the case here, these are complex developed flavors of true quality ingredients. Sadly, I ordered 3 slices of this "cake slice of the day" and only received one because they ran out -- and grubhub incorrectly allowed me to place 3 in my shopping cart. The folks behind the counter are extra friendly, seemingly unphased by the grit and grime of the East Village block this shop resides on. Don't they know New Yorkers eye you suspiciously when you're that nice? When you take a closer look at the ingredients and flavors however, you'll realize this kind of creativity can only be appreciated in a place like New York. There are things like a toasted banana bacon cake and a grapefruit white chocolate cookie on the menu, and they sell out regularly. This should not surprise you if you understand the palate of an adventurous New Yorker, and the minds behind Red Gate bakery appear to understand it very well. The aforementioned treats were not available the night I visited, and in fact they rotate the cakes they make so only certain flavors will be available on any given day. I settled with the cannibal cookie, made with crushed house-made oreos. This was a soft cookie with crisp edges, and I could not resist getting a cup of $3 milk to go with it. I want to say yolo but I'm not ready to reveal how unhip I am just yet. I also scarfed down a salted caramel brownie, which is as good as it sounds, and not overpoweringly sweet. Small cute bakery. Cardamodoodle cookies are super super good and even leaving them out for a day on the table, they were still chewy and soft. The vacation slice didn't tickle my fancy. I can't believe I just found out about this little gem. I probably walked past this intersection 1000 times but never notice this spot. Luckily I had a informative and trusted fellow foodie who tried this place out and recommended it. I decided to take my usual walk and stop by to pick up a few items. First their website is so cute with all the items illustrated! Go check it out and the order direct from their square site! My mind is blown when my lips touched the pickled PB&J. The sweet, the salty, the tart, the chewy, the jammy, the crunch. Everything you imagine in a dreamy handheld-able dessert. This one got it all. You can taste the subtlety of the miso while enjoying the unescapable nuttiness from the PB. That strawberry jam gives it a bit of the brightness it needs to leave you wanting more more and more! We also sampled the Miso PB Cookie (classic with a salty twist), White Chocolate Grapefruit Cookie (that zing from the grapefruit), Malty Lime Bar (a zesty attack mellowed out with malty creaminess) and Brown Butter Carrot Loaf (warmly spiced and beautifully touched with fluffy cream cheese). Their baked goods are what you need on a hard day - dense, hefty, don't skim on the ingredients, and very sweet. I got the carrot cake and the pickled PB&J bar and was genuinely surprised at how heavy they were. The carrot cake gets a 7.8/10 from me. Good texture, very moist and smooth, but I'd prefer more presence of carrots. The cake itself was heavy on the spice but slightly bland otherwise. The cream cheese frosting was very nice so I totally enjoyed the top half of the cake. The PB&J bar was probably one of the sweetest things I've tried. It was dense and buttery, and the miso crumbs on top added an interesting crunch and saltiness. This afternoon, my friend and I made plans to bake cookies, but gave up in the middle of buying ingredients at the grocery store and walked to Red Gate to buy a box of their cookies instead - amazing decision. We then ate our way through the box and ranked our favorite flavors, so I am now here to update my review with this official ranking no one asked for: 1) Cocoa Au Lait - essentially, a white and dark chocolate chunk coffee cookie. This one is absolutely giant - a cookie that was truly the size of my face. But thin, with very pleasing crispy edges - doesn't weigh you down as much as you might think. This cookie is studded with espresso beans, and the crunch when you get a bean in a bite is the greatest. There's also an espresso glaze on the cookie, which is just right: not too sweet. If you like chocolate-covered espresso beans or chocolate mochas, you will like this. 2) Buttermilk Rancher - see previous review for description, this one blows my mind, but I am admittedly someone who is drawn to a weird (but effective!!) flavor combination. Basically, if you are someone who sees a cookie with ranch dressing and instantly thinks "OOOH" instead of "gross," you will like this. 3) Cardamodoodle - a soft, chewy snickerdoodle with cardamom sugar on top. This has ruined other snickerdoodles for me. 4) Peppermint Oreo - dressed up Oreo with some crushed up candy canes adorning the cream filling. The flavor of this is exactly what I want a Thin Mint to be (Thin Mints: disappointing me since 1993), and the candy cane adds a wonderful bit of crunch. The chocolate cookie is chewy, and there's a very satisfying bit of resistance when you bite into it. This is also a good pick if you want something small: you can see in the photo that it's about the size of an actual Oreo. 5) Choco-Toffee - rich, gooey, melty chocolate chip cookie with toffee swirled throughout. This is the richest cookies of the bunch I tried - too heavy for me to eat a whole one (they are hefty) by myself, but if you're looking for a luxurious chocolate chip cookie experience, order this. 6) Kitchen Sinker - Red Gate's version of the famous Milk Bar Compost Cookie, this has chocolate, oats, coconut, and potato chips in it. Don't let the lower ranking dissuade you from ordering this, if that flavor combination sounds appealing to you: it's very good! Great crispy edges but chewy center, and I actually felt like I got potato chips in every bite, which was very satisfying. Just doesn't feel quite as special or memorable as some of their other cookies. Also, let it be known that this is 1000x better than the Compost Cookie at Milk Bar (really, any cookie at Milk Bar). 7) Eggnog Oreo - a good little chocolate/cream sandwich cookie, but now that I've had the peppermint one, this one just feels like it's missing something without the crunch of the candy canes. TBD because I still need to try them: Cannibal, PB Miso, White Chocolate Grapefruit, Spiced Oatmeal, Confetti. read more

Red Gate Bakery just opened 2 weeks ago. My friend and I stopped by while waiting for a table for brunch at a nearby spot. She got the choco toffee cookie and I got the toasted coconut banana bacon cake. The Choco toffee cookie is popular and yummy but the coconut banana bacon cake was SO FREAKING good and unique. It was like a banana nut bread with added yumminess. It sounds really weird but the flavors blend together so well! My friend and I will definitely be back for that cake, but it does change on a daily basis. The spot is cozy and has a spot for two very small people to sit. It's more of a place to stop in for a quick dessert and coffee. It's a little pricy but I don't mind paying a little more for something unique, I do mind paying a little more for something basic. read more

My wife is a huge cake fan and this place is convenient to my work so I've probably bought every single cake minus their strawtachio at this point. Their cakes are inventive and delicious but I just have to take away one star because I feel like the cake itself is the same for all of them AND their Ferrero Ro-cake (which I was waiting and waiting and waiting to get with much excitement) was just ridiculously salty. I don't know if that's what they were going for or if it was a one time oddity where the baker's hand slipped and too much came out but it was just way too much and now I'm nervous to even get that cake again. That being said, their stuff is great. All their cookies and sweet breads are a bit on the heavy side so beware of that but overall, I really like them. Well damn. This bakery exceeded my expectations. It's small but has a good selection. Everything I had was delicious. You could taste the quality butter , vanilla and care that they put into it. I guess she thought he was taking too long. Every time my friend or I asked a question, they laughed, made fun of us, rolled their eyes or came back with a rude remark that wasn't helpful at all. I'm a regular at red gate. Everything they have is amazing, seriously. My recent favorite is a coconut bacon banana cake, a large slice for multiple cake breaks at work lol ;) my coworker and I decided it's "pornographic" how delicious this cake is. The cookies are to die for, and just as creative. The kitchen sinker is great for someone that likes salty and sweet, and the buttermilk rancher for ranch dressing addicts that never knew they could have that in cookie form. You shouldn't overlook the caramel fudge brownies either, hot damn they're delicious. The (adorable) baker has new goodies pretty regularly, and they never disappoint. I will say, it's not a cheap habit but in these times it's important to treat yourself. read more

There was only one dedicated bench for seating since the cafe is tiny, but inside the cafe packs a lot of punch of tasty desserts. The ingredients sound robust, but all the flavors complemented each other amazingly. The cake was not overly sweet, just right and the saltiness of the bacon brought it all together.
