The Rooster looked like a fun place to bring my kids for a burger and shake, only to be embarrassed after taking my order that they take only cash. Not a sign anywhere upon arrival to indicate that. How inconsiderate to the customer! I would hope my business is a privilege and valued, not a hassle or only welcome on their terms. Don't tell me about their ATM machine. I'm certainly not going to incur an additional ATM fee so they can cheat on their taxes and hide a way to charge more. Minimal seating, high prices, and one can see the food is made from the cheapest possible ingredients one can find. To the owners a riddle: why do you think most folks choose to use cards? read more

Something completely inappropriate happened on my first visit last weekend. All due respect to the workers doing this tough job: I was with a group of friends ordering meals at busy time on a Sunday afternoon. Apparently what happened is that my group and the family behind us had very similar orders. Theirs came first and was mistakenly given to my group. My salad was taking a while, so my friends had already started eating by the time this became clear. A man who may have been a manager, was exploding with rage about how he couldn't take the food back and how he was losing money. He was literally BERATING the mother of the family and me and especially my friend who had come back to join me. BERATING us as if we had been plotting to steal the food. It was ugly. This can't be an easy job, but it is completely inappropriate to berate anyone like that, much less, some confused customers. There is no system or taking a name for an order. Nor is there an order number generated and printed on a receipt that would prevent this type of confusion. My friend who was also berated couldn't even eat. As for me, my appetite is strong and those cross cut fries were pretty good! Lots of other people seemed happy and families were playing on the lawn. The mother who got yelled at said she had been coming for years and nothing like this ever happened. But she seemed quite shaken by events as well. read more

Probably the most "authentic" drive-in I've eaten at, except for a minor detail: they decided, at some point in their history, to enclose the waiting area. I'm sure it seemed like a good idea, y'know? Protect the customers from the weather, make it feel more homey, what could go wrong? *cough*, ask anyone who puts up with the ordering process. The food here is pure 1960s throwback (small, but perfectly prepared burgers, chicken-in-a-basket, fried fish, and great Soft-Serv). The enclosed ordering area, however, makes it borderline infuriating to order, pay for, and retrieve your food. I've gone here at least fifteen times, and its an odd thing to dwell on (considering the food's basically unimpeachable), but dammit, Red Rooster! Use a take-a-number system, for crying out loud! Oh, and its a hair this side of pricey, realistically. Two smallish cheeseburgers (you're gonna want two -- and they *are* excellent) fries, drink, and you've spent maybe $12 or $13. Creative ordering can help (they use that ol' "deluxe-vs-regular" burger angle, with the deluxe just getting you lettuce and tomato -- skip it). Oh, and if you want a non-burger, try the chicken basket. Its utterly unlike KFC, its not like home-made fried chicken. Extremely krispy. Oh, and this place is famous. I saw Jerry Rabkin here one time, eating a cone. A lot of New York City folk make a pilgrimage out here on weekends. read more

If I could zero stars I would. $4.99 for a crappy burger is ridiculous. Fries NOT included! The food here is horribly OVERPRICED! It was no better than a Burger King burger. The fries had NO taste. And my $9 salad was a bowl of ice burg lettuce with a tomato and 3 tiny pieces of chicken. $33 dollars later I feel incredibly ripped off. SAVE YOUR MONEY and Don't eat here! Great place to stop on the way to Upstate New York / Massachusetts. Definitely a fast food joint, but it is a landmark in the area and a good location for a pit stop on the way up, just after getting off of 684 onto Rt. 22 in Brewster. The chicken sandwiches, onion rings and burgers make for a nice snack and there is miniature golf on site along with picnic tables to sit and rest at. Restrooms are generally clean as well (regardless of the traffic they endure.) read more

The narrowest dining room I've ever seen, but the much larger kitchen behind the counter fries up the best lethal food I've ever tried. By lethal, I mean it will make you swoon in pleasure from the taste, yet can probably kill you if you chomped on too much of it for too long - definitely not a healthy joint to grab a bite at. A fun place for your wallet, buds, buddies, and personal fried chicken enthusiasm. Prices for the chow is relatively cheap (on the fast food price line). Your mouth will jump like it's on jaeg when it tastes something fried from here. There's a playground/ golf-putt course/ wacky outside eating area for the child inside. The fried chicken is similar to the fried chicken fried below the mason-dixon line ... bad for your health, but good for your tastes. It's parking lot will be most likely uncrowded, so no worries about parking. The lines are a much larger issue - since the dining room is basically a hallway with tables attached, the queue for godly grub might just stretch straight out the doors. Aside from fried shtuff, they flip burgers, mix shakes, and grill chili dogs in a sublime fashion. It's upstate, so don't go wandering for a place just like this despite my four star commendation; there are closer places to NYC that can serve slightly lesser meals at the same cost. If you're going skiing or paint balling at Thunder RIdge/Liberty Paintball (or something similar), I heavily suggest you roll on over to Red Rooster and grab a luscious bite to munch on. read more

Ice cream cones, for a small was $3.99. 1.69 for a regular bottle of water. Nothing was worth the price charged. Yes there is outdoor and indoor seating, which was nice on a cool day. Won't be going back. The service was poor. The man who waited on us was difficult to understand and he acted as if we were waisting his time. read more

My family has been going to the Red Rooster for almost 50 years. I haven't gone to the RR as I moved away and went there recently while in Brewster visiting family. The RR has been expanded so I did expect prices to be higher but the quality of the food was terrible. I remember getting char-broiled juicy beef burgers but what I got resembled a frozen beef pattie. Nothing on the burger, no pickle, lettuce, tomato, nothing! The fries were mediocre. What was worse was when I went to pay, the older guy behind the counter was rude and said "No credit cards". Okay, I get that they are a cash business but where's the customer service? The young people that work there are very nice but this guy had no finesses for customers. If he was the owner, he sucks and if not, he should be fired. And the prices were way higher for the quality of the food. We would have been better off going to McDonald's down the road for way less money. $28 for 2 crappy burgers, fries and sodas! And they need to upgrade their picnic benches. I will never go there again. Big disappointment for me. read more

Have driven by this place for going on 25 years. Today my son asked if we could grab a meal and check it out, so we turned in. The ordering is a bit cramped and crowded. The food came out relatively quickly. My burger order was wrong, but one of the staff quickly corrected it. We hiked down to the picnic dining area. A nice expansive, grassy patch away from the hustle/bustle of Route 22, with ample picnic tables that were in various levels of not-quite-clean. Burger was pretty good, hot dog was spot on and my travel mate downed his chili burger and black and white quickly and announced Red Rooster as worthy of future visits! Price was fine, prep was pretty quick and the surroundings were old time 1960's or so. A rather sweet and nostalgic stop. Check it out. For all the Yelpers that hammer RR for average food and being in love with nostalgia.....uh yeah. Hard to get nostaglic over a Five Guys or McDonalds with plastic tables. Glad you figured that out, too bad it had no appeal to you. Maybe if RR added Chipotle sauce, shitake mushrooms, algae smoothies and paved over the putt putt, you'd enjoy the visit more. How can you not love the Red Rooster? I have a friend that grew up in this town and the first time I visited her we got ice cream here. Fast forward a few years, and after a long day at Storm King, we needed to eat. This is a no frills retro burger drive-in, and the food lives up to that standard. It's step up from your usual fast food burger, but don't expect anything more. A deluxe cheeseburger, small fry, and small coke set me back $8-$9, and hit the spot. There are two small tables inside and a cute back eating area outside. The cashiers were decked out in retro outfits and were super nice. A cute place to stop for a bite or for a sweet treat. read more

Red Rooster brings more nostalgia than anything else, and I think much of its reputation (such as it is) is driven both those who remember stopping here (as kids?) when Route 22 was the ONLY way to get to beautiful north east New York state. The burgers and fries are really just average for this type of joint, especially now, in the age of 5 Guys and similar burger specialty joints who make a point of bringing quality along with the quantity. The small enclosed ordering area is a major annoyance. You'll be jockeying back and forth with those who have yet to order as you wait for your food. They should have expanded and improved the traffic flow years (decades) ago, since they do seem to have the space for this, but I suspect they think this adds to the "charm." They're wrong. And if you're lucky enough to get one of the three two-person "booths," you'll probably have to clean it yourself, unless you don't mind dried ketchup and crumbs under your elbows as you eat. There is a large eating area outside, with lots of big red picnic tables, but you'll wonder whether the red is just to mask the dried ketchup (again). Well, you'll be lucky if it is at least dried. This area doubles as a playground in good weather, with a few electric riding toys for the kids, and there's a large grassy area behind that for running around or keeping the dog busy. On the other side of the parking lot is an 18-hole mini golf course that is maintained fairly well. Most of the staff, even the younger ones, seem like they've been there forever, and it shows in their attitude. There's not much pride of place in their "I can help who's next," unless they happen to meet a regular who's become addicted to the very average American grease-joint vittles you'll encounter here. Bottom line: don't come for the food, or the atmosphere. Come only if your children noisily demand it and are driving you crazy. read more

Ahh the amount of time in my youth that was spent consuming food from the Red Rooster. I cannot recall ever having a bad thing here. Burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese, chicken sandwich, french fries, onion rings, waffle fries, etc. all delicious. Is it more expensive than it should be? Probably, but when I was younger I had enough friends who worked there that I never really had to worry about the $$ and now as an adult I think I can handle the below $20 lunch when I am up for a visit and get a chance to stop by. read more

It's actually more like 3.5 stars. The food is ok. The onion rings are great. The frozen treats are why I go. The soft serve is creamy and you can get them dipped with or without sprinkles. The non-fat frozen yogurt is where it's at. It tastes just like the real thing. Perfect for a desert fix. read more

Red Rooster looks like it's been around forever...because in restaurant terms, it has been. For a couple of generations now, folks have gone out of their way to motor up Highway 22 north of Brewster for excellent burgers, chicken, hot dogs, fries and onion rings. The area inside is tight, but service is quick and the food is worth the effort. In addition to well-prepared and fresh food, the Rooster has very good ice cream, milk shakes, and sundaes. Even better, they're open late on weekends, so you can satisfy that sudden craving for a large chocolate cone dipped in sprinkles. When the weather is nice, the picnic tables in the back make a nice outing even more enjoyable. Good food, reasonable prices, late hours, iconic setting--Brewster's Red Rooster is roadfood at its best. read more

Nothing fancy about the Red Rooster, but it's an institution in Brewster. Every time I come back it makes me nostalgic for the days when I used to run around this place like a maniac when I was little. The prices seem to have gone up, and the burgers are nothing special, but there are some gems on the menu. First thing's first, the chili is simple, but fantastic! Good hotdogs, fries and onion rings, too. Don't leave without getting a shake or soft serve cone, either a brown or red bonnet (cone dipped in chocolate or cherry sauce, then hardened). The mini golf is not world-class by any means, but it's old-timey fun. Cash only, so come prepared. read more

Went to the Red Rooster as a mid summer Saturday mini break. The out door seating is terrific and relaxing. The food is your standard fast food stuff. We had burgers and fries then a round of golf followed by soft serve ice cream. The service was a bit hectic and distracted. We had 5 people in our party and they seemed overwhelmed by our order. The highlight was the post-mini golf soft serve. With the large backyard seating area we had plenty of space and fun. Will definitely go back. read more

For the amount i paid i got didly squat. on top of it if i was going to pay a lot for a thin piece of meat it should of been good. Honestly I could of made a burger myself, wouldnt be better, same quality but @ least I didnt have to spend $20 and wait in a long line and honestly with all the people in there (i went during the summer) how good of a service can you get. I dont get it. Went there for the first time yesterday with Hubby on the recommendation of someone. First of all, the Burger was quite good! flame broiled. The only thing was the cook touched it with his finger, I guess to see if it was done, but he had no gloves and so I didn't like that. Secondly, the burger was small and paid $ 3.50 for it! So it's quite expensive for what you get. The place is very small and dirty, nothing nice about it. The worst part were the people behind the counter, NO SMILE what so ever!!! The lady there with one eyebrow up at all time, sweeping the floor was so annoying! Her face so unwelcoming. I did see an older man there, wonder if that's the Owner, don't know. They guy who served us was ok. But that lady, Oh my goodness! NO customer welcoming at all. The grillman, no smiles. I don't know. Would not go back. Because this place is SUPPOSEDLY famous, we took 1 picture, just 1 and they looked at us like we were crazy! BaD customer service!!! read more

I am giving this three stars because the food is really just OK. There are so many similarly priced better burgers out there. The ice cream is run-of-the-mill soft serve. My kids do really like it here because of the mini-golf and the large lawn where they can often play with a group of kids, so we return more often than we should. I do think the prices are a little high for the quality. If you add in the mini-golf and ice cream it is not cheap. read more
