Not friendly mediocre food at best. For what they charge this place should be as good as five guys. Will never go back again.

I think you must be completely in love with the idea of what this place was/is or have children to enjoy this place. Sadly, Putnam Co. is missing gitchy, family fun places so this place is sort "it". The food is frozen, lower quality, over priced summer fair. I'm surprised at how freezer ready the food is but no one seems to mind paying $6 for .50 frozen tiny burger patty. The frozen treats for ridiculously over priced and larger families should prepare to pay heavily for a soda, burger, fries and ice cream dessert per person because the portions are not sharing sizes. The location is great and it is open on a late night for malt, so we do take advantage of that a couple times a year. It really is a shame that Brewster or this area is so lacking a fun quality area for everyone to enjoy at a reasonable price that RR is cleaning up. read more

For a fast food joint, the Red Rooster is the best of the best. An institution that has been immortalized in print and on TV (David Letterman and Man vs Food), and is well loved by residents. I've been going here since I was a little nugget, and have never been dissapointed, but I do have my favorites. The burgers are the classic and are good, but don't expect behemoths we've gotten used to in America. The chili dogs are to DIE for, absolutely great. The chili is good by itself as well. Chicken sandwiches are scrumptious. Always, I mean ALWAYS, walk away with either a malted milkshake or a soft serve cone (with rainbow sprinkles, naturally). Inside seating sucks, except in winter. First off, the place was disgusting when we came in. Fries all over the floor, random other detritus.. despite a full staff working behind the counter and not appearing particularly busy, nobody had swept the floor in hours it seemed. What's worse, I sat down at one of the booths inside like an idiot and managed to get BBQ sauce all over my pants. My fault I suppose for not examining more closely (I've sat down a few times in my life, I've gotten the hang of it), but the place was filthy. The staff was surly as anything. The latin gentleman "helping" us didn't offer any greeting, so after looking at his stone-faced expression for a few seconds, I just placed the order. Never did get a word out of him, although that means he did cough up the nickel he tried stealing from my change without attitude, so that's nice. Wait no, he's a cashier - I'm sure it was an accident, and that he gave back the wrong change unintentionally. Because people that deal with money all day make mistakes like that. The ice cream was so-so at best - I didn't much care for it, and my girlfriend got a stomach ache from it. Boy, what a laundry list! Anyway, the place looks cute, but really is kind of a dirty dump with crappy food. I don't see the appeal, except for maybe some kind nostalgia. RIPOFF ALERT!! The Red Rooster is the abusive boyfriend you get away from but keep going back to. It is nothing more than below average food that's super over priced, I can't quite figure out how or why the Red Rooster has had press and hype around it. The Yelpers giving this such rave reviews are doing it simply because of childhood nostalgia, local pride, or the fact that they read about or saw the Red Rooster on TV. But when you actually go in, you'll see all the press and write ups are from the late 90's/early 2000. That should have been a red flag, but I ordered anyways. Let me start with the good, which is desert. The milkshakes and ice cream are the only thing that will make me return. The staff is always super friendly, which you won't get at the big chains. But the food isn't up to par even with the McDonald's or Burger King right next door. The food is average at best - small portions, standard fast food quality, and nothing to write home about. The burgers cost five bucks without fries, and are nothing more than your standard small patty you'd expect to find at your grocers freezer. But we got two burgers, onion rings, a soda, and a milkshake, and it cost $22.00. What a rip! The dining / ordering area is small and cramped, and the restaurant obviously doesn't take cleanliness as a priority. This place is one surprise health inspection away from a thirty day shut down. Do yourself a favor... Skip the red rooster. You'll get more for less anywhere else. read more

First off yes it's cash only. I've been coming here since I was a kid. Great spot for American food. They have a mini golf course for kids which is nice. Food is very good. I've been driven past Red Rooster a bunch of times, and finally went. The architecture called to me. I'll start out with the good. The service was solid. Really nice staff, patient, and dealt with the weird guy that was obviously looking to flirt/for attention without batting an eyelash. My Sprite didn't have syrup in it, and they were quick to get me a different drink, and had a guy hook up better Sprite if I wanted that. Now to the mediocre, aka the food. Nothing was particularly good or memorable. The burger was a burger. The fries were average. Kinda bland. Soft serve was also very run of the mill. Didn't get a chance to mini-golf, but it looked cute. I don't know the area at all, but it seems to be one of the few places that's open late, which made it sort of a town hub. Even at 3:30 on a Sunday, Red Rooster was super busy! They must do a great business. We ordered a cheeseburger, seasoned fries, and a chocolate cone. The cone was huge! Definitely generous portions. We also got 2 thick milkshakes - not the best I've had (think there was too much chocolate syrup in them), but still delicious. A Covid nightmare. One line indoors to order. Everyone too close to each other. When you have finished ordering at counter , you must then wait in no place in particular until person behind counter hands you your completed order. At this point, to exit, you must pass everyone in back of you that is waiting to order. Although there are 2 doors that can be used to enter and exit, customers are forced to double back and exit the same door that they entered - passing all customers in line. We went here to celebrate National Hamburger Day and were not disappointed! I had the double cheeseburger deluxe with fries and onion rings to share with my wife and daughter. My wife had the chicken breast sandwich which looked delicious. For round 2 I had to try the fried clam strips on a hot dog bun with tarter sauce (and more onion rings) and a soft serve cone with rainbow sprinkles for my daughter. My family and I had been going to Red Rooster for years since living in Brewster and South Salem when we were younger. We were always within driving distance of a quick, drive up meal. Going back as an adult is a different experience altogether. While the sense of nostalgia is still high, and it's a great place to grab a shake, everything else has pretty much fallen by the wayside. The golfing has lost its magical appeal, and the area surrounding RR is pretty dirty and usually super overcrowded. The types of people Red Rooster attracts these days are either rowdy teens, lots of obnoxious kids (which don't bother me too much, but they are EVERYWHERE), or typical hoodlums. Also, the food makes me sick. I don't know why or how, it just does. It's upsetting, because I pass RR on a near-daily basis, but I keep on driving and try to remember the good ol' days. read more

Place has gone from bad to worse, and I fail to see the attraction. They recently did renovations, which I imagine could not have been so difficult for them, because they charge way too much for their mediocre products. Last week I was in there, as I've been many times, and the owner who has seen me many times asked, "Can I help you Miss?" I corrected her by replying, "Mr.". Perhaps her error was due to my height and that my Covid-19 mask was covering my face. Either way my wife assures I don't remotely resemble a woman. Nonetheless, 4 or 5 of her teenaged employees laughed loudly and continuously about it, making me feel even less comfortable. Their reaction was so over the top, I think they were high. The lady then said, "Oh I wasn't talking to you, it was the other person standing there." This was a lame attempt to cover it, especially since there was no one else standing there. I was about to walk out, but my wife was craving her sundae, so I placed an order for her sundae, and a second small cup of hard chocolate, with no toppings. I asked for nuts for the sundae. The same lady preparing my order was looking for the nuts, and when she couldn't find them, she asked her giggling crew. Her English was so intelligible, they couldn't understand what she was looking for. One asked, "What do you need, tops?" Does tops even sound like nuts? I finally intervened and said, "Nuts" which they heard right away. The lady completed my order. Then I was charged $11 for a small sundae and a single-scoop of freezer-burned stale chocolate ice cream. Needless to say, my experience was expensive and unenjoyable. In 2013, I posted a review noting that many of the 5-star reviews come from people that are not from the area and suspected that they were posted by friends and relatives. I believe this may be good for teenagers to hang out, or for young adults to bring small children, but for people looking for a place to get ice cream outside, I'd recommend the place in Carmel. This was our first visit and most likely our last. There are no signs directing you where to order which causes much confusion when the place is crowded. When I went to pay I was told the do not accept credit cards. No sign regarding that either. Thankfully I had enough cash to pay for the food but had to use the ATM there to pay for the mini golf. The ATM is owned by Red Rooster and charges a $2.50 fee. No wonder they don't take credit cards. Waited by the mini golf for 15 minutes then had to send my son back to the counter to ask for help. I'm not sure why there isn't someone working down by the golf, it was quite busy. Overall, the food was ok but not worth the price or aggravation. read more

A cute little place that feels totally nostalgic. The staff is adorned in uniforms that remind me of those you see in movies from the 1950s. The space is TINY...a little counter with 3 small booths along the windows. Food is made to order, so it comes out fresh and piping hot. The burger was really tasty and juicy as were the chicken tenders. The fries were crisp and the onion rings were totally awesome, just delicious. The prices may be a little on the high side, but the warm staff and the the cute ambiance made it all worth it. read more

Five stars if I based this on nostalgia alone. But this is about the food. I did a lot of 'eye-tasting' here yesterday..... those burgers look and smell stupendous - for a drive-in. The outdoor seating is amazing, and in a huge area. The onion rings look really good - though not home made. The french fries did nothing for me. The honey-dipped fried chicken is pricey (for a drive-in) and was very dry. It is obviously a frozen product and contains too much sodium. I love extra thick malts...but I detest liquid malt. It does not taste the same as powdered. They use it here because it is less messy and mixes easier (probably less expensive, too). That's a shame. The soft ice cream is pretty good- the vanilla is rather tasteless, the texture creamy though. The soft-serve chocolate is much better. The hot fudge is more like thick chocolate syrup. It could stand improvement. Service is friendly - not super fast. I am returning to try a burger with sauteed onions - which looked and smelled divine.I hope this place will exist for years to come. It did my heart good to return after many, many years. We all need that; "Blast from the Past" now and then. read more

After a decent drive on the road, many people stop here for a quick bite to eat, get a drink, stretch your legs, use the restroom and sit for a bit before they go on their way. It hits all the criteria that a family or an individual would need when making a pit stop and easily become a nostalgic place. While the food is pricey and better meals can be had elsewhere, if you are coming here- you are splurging a bit. The go to item is the milkshake- very very good. The other food items in my regards are average and some are a bit above average. While there are better food options out there, this is going to be as good as it gets on this road's pit stop. read more

The Red Rooster is an oasis along Route 22. This falls under the category of great road food and also just a solid burger place. Everything is prepared fresh while you wait and still the staff moves quick. The aesthetics of ordering may be a nuisance due to the narrow entry way but it is one of those challenges you suck up just because. You'll even be willing to stand in line twice since you'll want to get some ice cream for dessert after eating. It would be great if the Red Rooster had a dining room but there is something appealing about seeing kids coming with their parents after soccer, little league or football. Had a summer home up that way and at the time it was the place to eat. Still stop there and the food is always very good. It's a little tight inside but we eat in the car. Fish and Chip are good and the tuna as well. The milkshakes are great and you can't go wrong with a burger. Try it! Sure you'll be a fan. Miniature golf right next door. Love it here! The original version of a Shake Shack, only better. It's always busy but service is quick. My husband has been coming here for 30 years and says it has never stopped being consistently good. Ice cream, burgers, hot dogs, shakes, malteds--you name it, it's that kind of place. Are you kidding? Save your money. Food was poor, service non-existent and employees rude. When the half our party received food but the others didn't and the food got cold waiting, we were told, "Why didn't you start eating?" Then the when the missing food was ready 20 minutes later and it had fallen off the plate onto the dirty tray. Not acceptable! We were told to take our business down the road next time! by the manager (not wearing a mask!) because he couldn't help it if they were backed-up! Huh? He was blaming us for his poor performance and just shrugged his shoulders. Add To that the small portions and the cash only payments and that's it for me. Worst place ever! took me really long to order my food and the lady told me to stop rushing her as I just took a step toward the register . As I waited really long for my food I could not help to notice the dirtiness of the place. As I was getting my soda cup I stepped in soda spilt from another customer I tried telling a staff member and they said that's not my problem. Been going to the rooster for over 15 years. My son and his lacrosse team used to play at the Brewster sky dome and by unanimous acclaim the entire team would always dine at Chez Rooster afterwards.This went on for over 10 years and for the guy who was complaining about dogs, I would hate to see him on his Saturday night of fine dining when this smelly, sweaty crew rolled in. There would be upwards of 20 people pouring in and never once were we not met with a hearty greeting and great burgers and shakes served up immediately and at very reasonable prices. This was before the expansion but it didn't matter as we would be eating in cars or milling around outside even in the winter. The expansion was much needed and has made the place even better. This is the quintessential burger and shake place of my 1960's youth and as for our complaining friend, I would personally take the dogs over the lacrosse team (haha). Again, this is a burger and shake joint and a darn great one at that, perhaps we could take up a group collection and send our complaining friend to Peter Lugers where he would also probably find some reason to complain. It's an eye catching building for sure, but it leaves a lot to be desired. High prices for frozen food. The ice cream is okay. The burgers are gross and the hot dogs are small for the price. The employees are not the friendliest and the place is cash only- but there are not signs telling you so. Overall I would say avoid this restaurant. Definitely not worth it. read more
