This is a place I really want to like, and it has a lot going for it, location, look and feel are great. Look clean and happy. The food? Not so much. I think you'd be OK sticking to the burger and fries, but outside of that? I don't think so. I opted for the 4-piece fried chicken. Great service! Horrible wings and fries. The chicken looked old, had no taste, the fries tasted like it was fried in the same chicken oil and it tasted like raw chicken. It was nasty. On a day trip to Millerton, we stumbled upon Red Rooster. Between my husband and I we shared a 4 piece (wing, breast, leg, & thigh) meal and a halved double cheese burger. The cheeseburger was really tasty and juicy and actually tasted like real meat unlike other burger places. The chicken was what impressed me the most and reminded me of Korean wings. It was light and crispy with an aftertaste of a tinge of honey. The only thing I would dock Rooster for is their prices and for this reason they loose an entire star. read more

Over priced bad fast food, confusing ordering setup, cash only and a nasty girl behind the counter. When I called her out for being rude her response was basically we don't need your business, and you can talk to the owner about me if you want, but he is my father!!! But since I already paid I stayed and the food was awful and I watched the girl point and complain about me loudly to her father. I'm not a big complainer and I didn't expect some pub style burger. This is an iconic spot, so I was told. Ive driven past it many times and decided to try it. The service was quick and friendly. The inside was small and suggestive to outdoor eating. They had plenty of shaded picnic tables so that was all good. The table fare was classic fry cook stuff - fried chicken, burgers, fries, etc... $36.00 fed 4 including drinks. You can't beat the ice cream, but the food is problematic. I took my kid for a classic burger dinner. I don't eat red meat. A double-cheeseburger is $9.99. A grilled cheese + fries is $9.99. A VEGGIE burger is $13.95, no fries. Let's face it, a veggie burger costs way less than a beef burger. Seems like they are being judgmental about non-meat eaters. This place is a nice staple through the years. Will say it is pricey and will echo the comments of many that being cash only is just annoying. I'm sure they are aware. Would like them to use the savings they get from no credit card fees to install retractable blinds by where you order. Blinding sunlight is annoying. This place has gone way down hill since they added on the new extension to the place. This was one of my worst experiences this year! The food wasnt that good and the price was outrageous 32.99 for a double chilli cheese burger, 2 frys 2 chocolate shake and 1 order of 3 piece chicken fingers? It's a real shame that the management or owner does not seem ti care about the product he sells nor the outrageous prices, or the fact that you dont have 8 to 10 dogs in a place where people are eating there food. They don't even have signs where to order your food or where to pick up your food. If i were running this place I'd change a few things fast, better quality food, more reasonable prices, no dogs where people are eating, place signs up where you order and where you pick up your food. Safari game's joystick didn't work so it was unplayable, no change machine to get more quarters and it wasn't worth getting someone in the restaurant to make change or get refund, so we just left. read more

You reeeeeally want to like this place, but its food lacks a distinctive personality that could make it a destination and not just a road-side stop. The food is okay, and I'd go here before fast food, but it's just not compelling enough to go out of your way to get it, especially when it gets really busy. The service, unfortunately, is abysmal. The people behind the counter appear unaware that you're there to order food. That, or they just don't care. And I'm not being hyperbolic; it really is that bad. With all that said, it's an ok stop to take the kids (or yourself!) for ice cream. Came here on a summer Sunday night for ice cream... it's cash only, which I found out after I ordered... I got a small swirl in a cup and my hubby got a medium vanilla milkshake and the total came to about $10. My icecream was super good and I want to describe the texture as fluffly...it was really good! The small size is actually quite huge, and because I had no self-control, I finished the whole thing and had a belly ache the rest of the night. It has changed for the worse.. I was ignored by staff at the counter for about 5 minutes. This was after the staff had finished an order and went to fold boxes and talk to another staff member. The line built up after that. The staff needs to learn how to handle customers that are waiting for help. They should finish side work when ther is no customers at the counter read more

This is one of the best classic diners I've been to. The service is very friendly, especially when the owner is at the counter; I've never been here without him being around, and there's an oversized cartoon cutout of him so you can recognize him. The inside gets crowded easily, but things are pretty efficient all things considered. The outside picnic area is pretty big so its not too hard to grab a table, and they keep the area fairly clean. The burgers and fries are both pretty damn good, but what really does it for me here are the shakes and onion rings. The onion rings are perfectly done: not soggy, not too thick, with a great batter on them. The shakes are thick and actually made of quality ice cream instead of some bagged chemicals. Not too sweet either. I also like the pickles they use here. Its always a good sign when a place uses quality pickles instead of crappy ones. All in all, a quality, classic drive-in meal. Its weird to think that these slices of Americana are fairly rare these days, but they are. If you are in the area, do yourself a favor and take a detour here. My favorite burger joint ever. the burgers are fantastic, as well as everything else on the menu. the chicken nuggets and chicken tenders are just BOMB! theyre always fresh and come super hot. the shakes here are so good as well as the soft ice cream. its a small menu but i know what i like and they always nail it. its the type of place that makes your meal the same each time, so when youre craving something you will get the same tasting meal each time. i really love that about them. its cute to sit outside, they have a mini golf section which never interested me as an adult. read more

I was warned by the North Salem moms about how rude this place was, and shame on me for not listening. We had had some ok and some questionable experiences, but none were that bad until tonight. I was shocked by how insulting this place was to me and my family tonight, and worst of all, I am pretty confident the person was a manager. I walked in tonight finishing the last couple of bites of a slice of pizza my husband bought me 4 hours earlier, before my kids school concert. I wanted to go home and eat real food after, but the kids begged me to go to Red Rooster and so I ate the old pizza while driving and took the kids here. I walked in holding the crust and was screamed at by the lady behind the counter to me across the restaurant while I was still holding the door. I was not intending to be rude so I turned around happy to finish in the rain and toss the crust in the trash. It's cash only and my husband and kids were ordering and said- "but she has the cash" to which she said ok. So then I was yelled to by my family, "it's ok we need your cash". So I turned back around and handed them my cash. I never even SPOKE A WORD. The manager started speaking poorly about me with the snottiest tone telling MY 6 and 8 year old children how you just don't do that in restaurants and how rude I was for even doing it (it was crust and I was leaving to finish in the rain!). I said, "your tone to me and talking bad about me to my children I would say is far more rude. You can say what you need to say politely." She said "since I'm so rude, take your money back. NO ICE CREAM TODAY KIDS!" And she slapped our money back on the counter. We left with no argument, they will never get another dime from me. The kids cried for a bit but we found ice cream elsewhere and shared the other yelp reviews to my kids about their bad reputation and they understood- at least my 8 yr old did. Once previously loyal customers will never be back again. Such a shame. This place has a great location if their staff could get some class. read more

The "classic" drive-up burger joint is well known by all that pass thru the area on Rt. 22. I have memories of stopping in here as a kid on my way to Big Birch ski area (Thunder Ridge) from Westchester. I suspect it's the "memories" that keep this place going so strong, although many locals are regulars as well. It's consistently very clean, and the service is excellent. The menu is basic; burgers, wraps, hotdogs, etc. According to the rug rats - their shakes are the best. The food itself is okay, but definitely overpriced. Cash only. You're really only going here for the convenience or nostalgia. In my option, you can get a MUCH better burger at a Five Guy's franchise or Blazer Pub in Purdys. Stop in once or twice if your curious; play some mini-golf, but from a "quality of food" perspective no reason to be a regular. read more

What I love about this place is that it isn't a chain food, fast food restaurant. I love the kitschy-ness of it, and the history! The burger is somewhere in between a Mc Donald's burger and a Five Guy's burger. I'd literally rate it smack-dab in the middle of that spectrum. Their fries are yummy shoe-string fries. And their chili dogs are a touch spicy. All that I have had there has been above average for a fast-food sort of place! I've noticed some complaints on the slow service, but I suppose they may have failed to recognize or take in to count that everything is made per order. There aren't burgers and hot dogs sitting under a heat lamp just waiting for the next wave of hungry diners. If you'd rather spend 30.00 for your family at a Mc Donald's, Burger King, etc. go ahead. But realize this is a mom and pop kind of place. With only 5 workers, a put-put and is practically one of the trademarks of Brewster, NY. It's been around for quite some time. And quite picture-esque. I'd choose a mom and pop sort of place any day over some chain food place. And yes, the seating is quite scarce indoors, but there is a clue within the title of the restaurant... "Drive-In". Same concept as a Drive-In movie. Park and dine. read more
