This is one of the best classic diners I've been to. The service is very friendly, especially when the owner is at the counter; I've never been here without him being around, and there's an oversized cartoon cutout of him so you can recognize him. The inside gets crowded easily, but things are pretty efficient all things considered. The outside picnic area is pretty big so its not too hard to grab a table, and they keep the area fairly clean. The burgers and fries are both pretty damn good, but what really does it for me here are the shakes and onion rings. The onion rings are perfectly done: not soggy, not too thick, with a great batter on them. The shakes are thick and actually made of quality ice cream instead of some bagged chemicals. Not too sweet either. I also like the pickles they use here. Its always a good sign when a place uses quality pickles instead of crappy ones. All in all, a quality, classic drive-in meal. Its weird to think that these slices of Americana are fairly rare these days, but they are. If you are in the area, do yourself a favor and take a detour here. It has changed for the worse.. I was ignored by staff at the counter for about 5 minutes. This was after the staff had finished an order and went to fold boxes and talk to another staff member. The line built up after that. The staff needs to learn how to handle customers that are waiting for help. They should finish side work when ther is no customers at the counter read more

My favorite burger joint ever. the burgers are fantastic, as well as everything else on the menu. the chicken nuggets and chicken tenders are just BOMB! theyre always fresh and come super hot. the shakes here are so good as well as the soft ice cream. its a small menu but i know what i like and they always nail it. its the type of place that makes your meal the same each time, so when youre craving something you will get the same tasting meal each time. i really love that about them. its cute to sit outside, they have a mini golf section which never interested me as an adult. read more

I appreciate this spot exactly for what it is- quick, classic food made from real ingredients. I have been caught by the "cash only" caveat, though they did have a sign that I missed. I love Red-Rooster Drive-In. I give it 4 stars because I believe it is above average fast-food quality. And I keep a few other things into consideration as well, you'll find those points below... What I love about this place is that it isn't a chain food, fast food restaurant. I love the kitschy-ness of it, and the history! The burger is somewhere in between a Mc Donald's burger and a Five Guy's burger. I'd literally rate it smack-dab in the middle of that spectrum. Their fries are yummy shoe-string fries. And their chili dogs are a touch spicy. All that I have had there has been above average for a fast-food sort of place! I've noticed some complaints on the slow service, but I suppose they may have failed to recognize or take in to count that everything is made per order. There aren't burgers and hot dogs sitting under a heat lamp just waiting for the next wave of hungry diners. If you'd rather spend 30.00 for your family at a Mc Donald's, Burger King, etc. go ahead. But realize this is a mom and pop kind of place. With only 5 workers, a put-put and is practically one of the trademarks of Brewster, NY. It's been around for quite some time. And quite picture-esque. I'd choose a mom and pop sort of place any day over some chain food place. I have memories of stopping in here as a kid on my way to Big Birch ski area (Thunder Ridge) from Westchester. I suspect it's the "memories" that keep this place going so strong, although many locals are regulars as well. It's consistently very clean, and the service is excellent. The menu is basic; burgers, wraps, hotdogs, etc. According to the rug rats - their shakes are the best. The food itself is okay, but definitely overpriced. Cash only. You're really only going here for the convenience or nostalgia. In my option, you can get a MUCH better burger at a Five Guy's franchise or Blazer Pub in Purdys. Stop in once or twice if your curious; play some mini-golf, but from a "quality of food" perspective no reason to be a regular. read more

Nothing beats a classic burger, fries, and shake with a mini golf course and an outside seating area big enough to have a beer garden. The burger isn't the normal huge beef patties that I am used to. They are as small as a McDonald's Burger but with fresh ingredients. It reminds me of an old school burger spot that has been there for generations. I recommend getting a double meat on the burger because a single is not going to cut it. Surprisingly the burger was really delicious especially with crunchy fries and a sweet cold milkshake. The shake was creamy, sweet, refreshing and was made perfect. I got cheese fries as a side and it did not disappoint. It took a while to get the food but that means they made it with love and care. They really tend to the kids as there are quarter machines to ride quarter rides that go around and around as well as a mini golf course. If your hungry to try something more classic than the other fast foods I recommend coming here instead of BK a block before it and McDonald's a block after it (coming from NYC). read more

I was warned by the North Salem moms about how rude this place was, and shame on me for not listening. We had had some ok and some questionable experiences, but none were that bad until tonight. I was shocked by how insulting this place was to me and my family tonight, and worst of all, I am pretty confident the person was a manager. I walked in tonight finishing the last couple of bites of a slice of pizza my husband bought me 4 hours earlier, before my kids school concert. I wanted to go home and eat real food after, but the kids begged me to go to Red Rooster and so I ate the old pizza while driving and took the kids here. I walked in holding the crust and was screamed at by the lady behind the counter to me across the restaurant while I was still holding the door. I was not intending to be rude so I turned around happy to finish in the rain and toss the crust in the trash. It's cash only and my husband and kids were ordering and said- "but she has the cash" to which she said ok. So then I was yelled to by my family, "it's ok we need your cash". So I turned back around and handed them my cash. I never even SPOKE A WORD. The manager started speaking poorly about me with the snottiest tone telling MY 6 and 8 year old children how you just don't do that in restaurants and how rude I was for even doing it (it was crust and I was leaving to finish in the rain!). I said, "your tone to me and talking bad about me to my children I would say is far more rude. You can say what you need to say politely." She said "since I'm so rude, take your money back. NO ICE CREAM TODAY KIDS!" And she slapped our money back on the counter. We left with no argument, they will never get another dime from me. The kids cried for a bit but we found ice cream elsewhere and shared the other yelp reviews to my kids about their bad reputation and they understood- at least my 8 yr old did. With all due respect for those who adore this place for the theme, the nostalgia, the old schoolness of the place, I wish I had your experience. I didn't. I had a sad experience. I don't live near here. I had another 40 minutes to go before I made it home and I needed dinner. The bright lights and clock (9:30 pm) clearly indicated that it was open for business. So, in I walked. To 2 little kids waiting for something, and at least 4 employees who looked at me as if I dashed their hopes for an early evening (although it closes at 11....hmmm) then proceeded to ignore me. One was sweeping. Another was refilling condiments. A youngish counter worker asked the two kids about their pending order. So I waited. And dirty looks aside, I figured this was kind of like a line. Until a guy walked in and was helped immediately by another guy behind the counter. As if were invisible. I didn't make a scene. I was too surprised. Finally, the two kids got their food and their person asked for my order, which I gave her: a cheeseburger and fries. And I waited a little more for my food, and continued to watch the other kitchen workers do their silent interpretation of "swing low, sweet chariot." I don't operate under the illusion that fast food workers on the nigh shift should be happy goofballs or whistle while they work, but come the eff on dudes. The food was fine. The service blew. This was a total disappointment. As a child my family used to stop at The Red Rooster for ice cream and burgers. Today I wanted to stop there because I am up from SC. Don't bother. They are under new ownership and the prices even for NY were crazy and the food is nothing but frozen junk you'd get at the concession stand at a public pool. Where do I begin? Food is overpriced, for sure. The burger was ok, but clearly just recooked frozen food. The fries were a pittance of a serving, greasy, and not crisp. The ice cream is good, but how can you mess up soft serve? You have to try hard. You can get a better variety of ice cream, and just as good soft serve at King Kone. But the one-star comes because the owner is a terrible businessman, and a misogynist at that. I was parked in the handicap spot. While my daughter and I were eating, their supply truck, instead of driving to the back, where supplies end up getting unloaded, parked right behind our car, pretty much blocking off every single handicap spot. We were not in a terrible rush, but I didn't know if it was a supply truck for them, at that point, or a customer. So I asked at the counter, politely, if they knew who the truck was, and if it was a supplier or customer. The woman at the counter said she'll check in the back, because she thinks the drivers downstairs. This guy comes up, and says, essentially, "what's your problem?" I explained that the truck was blocking me in, and I was just wondering if you knew how much longer was going to be. I wasn't yelling, I was simply asking. He then looked outside and goes, "give me your keys, I'll drive you out." But it wasn't with the tone of, "I'm being helpful individual," it was more along the lines of the attitude, "you're a woman, clearly you can't drive, but I, being a man, can back you out of the situation." I said thank you, but no thanks, I would just like to know when the truck was leaving, if it was going to be soon. He, again, got rude and offensive, and said the guy would be done in a minute. I was going to order ice cream, in the meantime, what I said, "OK, but it is a little upsetting that he has all the handicap spots blocked off." To which he responded, "What do you want me to do? We need our supplies." At that point, I told him that I was about to order more, and have ice cream while we waited, but with that attitude, I would be ordering anything else. I then went out to my car, which fortunately is small, and I was able to squeeze it out, but not easily, not because I'm not a good driver, but because it was incredibly tight. I then called, to speak to him again, to see if perhaps he'd had settled down. Instead, he doubled down. Even when I pointed out, he could've resolve the situation by simply apologizing, and being nice about it, instead of being insulting. He further made things worse. My wife and I had a fun eventful Saturday, when we got home we needed a place for dinner. We had seen an article about the Red Rooster Drive-in and decided to try it out. What a great place to step back in time. Great food. I had a double cheeseburger on lettuce ( I'm gluten free) along with cheese fries. Burgers were juicy and delicious. Fries were also great, even if they weren't great for my cholesterol. Sitting outside meant we could listen to the DJ spinning tunes from the 50's and watch the kids playing on the back lawn. Across the parking lot, people were laughing and shouting as they played mini golf. So much good food and fun times. We will be bringing friends back here. read more
