I was warned by the North Salem moms about how rude this place was, and shame on me for not listening. We had had some ok and some questionable experiences, but none were that bad until tonight. I was shocked by how insulting this place was to me and my family tonight, and worst of all, I am pretty confident the person was a manager. I walked in tonight finishing the last couple of bites of a slice of pizza my husband bought me 4 hours earlier, before my kids school concert. I wanted to go home and eat real food after, but the kids begged me to go to Red Rooster and so I ate the old pizza while driving and took the kids here. I walked in holding the crust and was screamed at by the lady behind the counter to me across the restaurant while I was still holding the door. I was not intending to be rude so I turned around happy to finish in the rain and toss the crust in the trash. It's cash only and my husband and kids were ordering and said- "but she has the cash" to which she said ok. So then I was yelled to by my family, "it's ok we need your cash". So I turned back around and handed them my cash. I never even SPOKE A WORD. The manager started speaking poorly about me with the snottiest tone telling MY 6 and 8 year old children how you just don't do that in restaurants and how rude I was for even doing it (it was crust and I was leaving to finish in the rain!). I said, "your tone to me and talking bad about me to my children I would say is far more rude. You can say what you need to say politely." She said "since I'm so rude, take your money back. NO ICE CREAM TODAY KIDS!" And she slapped our money back on the counter. We left with no argument, they will never get another dime from me. The kids cried for a bit but we found ice cream elsewhere and shared the other yelp reviews to my kids about their bad reputation and they understood- at least my 8 yr old did. Once previously loyal customers will never be back again. Such a shame. This place has a great location if their staff could get some class. read more

Nothing beats a classic burger, fries, and shake with a mini golf course and an outside seating area big enough to have a beer garden. The burger isn't the normal huge beef patties that I am used to. They are as small as a McDonald's Burger but with fresh ingredients. It reminds me of an old school burger spot that has been there for generations. I recommend getting a double meat on the burger because a single is not going to cut it. Surprisingly the burger was really delicious especially with crunchy fries and a sweet cold milkshake. The shake was creamy, sweet, refreshing and was made perfect. I got cheese fries as a side and it did not disappoint. It took a while to get the food but that means they made it with love and care. They really tend to the kids as there are quarter machines to ride quarter rides that go around and around as well as a mini golf course. If your hungry to try something more classic than the other fast foods I recommend coming here instead of BK a block before it and McDonald's a block after it (coming from NYC). read more

With all due respect for those who adore this place for the theme, the nostalgia, the old schoolness of the place, I wish I had your experience. I didn't. I had a sad experience. I don't live near here. I had another 40 minutes to go before I made it home and I needed dinner. The bright lights and clock (9:30 pm) clearly indicated that it was open for business. So, in I walked. To 2 little kids waiting for something, and at least 4 employees who looked at me as if I dashed their hopes for an early evening (although it closes at 11....hmmm) then proceeded to ignore me. One was sweeping. Another was refilling condiments. A youngish counter worker asked the two kids about their pending order. So I waited. And dirty looks aside, I figured this was kind of like a line. Until a guy walked in and was helped immediately by another guy behind the counter. As if were invisible. I didn't make a scene. I was too surprised. Finally, the two kids got their food and their person asked for my order, which I gave her: a cheeseburger and fries. And I waited a little more for my food, and continued to watch the other kitchen workers do their silent interpretation of "swing low, sweet chariot." I don't operate under the illusion that fast food workers on the nigh shift should be happy goofballs or whistle while they work, but come the eff on dudes. The food was fine. The service blew. This was a total disappointment. As a child my family used to stop at The Red Rooster for ice cream and burgers. Today I wanted to stop there because I am up from SC. Don't bother. They are under new ownership and the prices even for NY were crazy and the food is nothing but frozen junk you'd get at the concession stand at a public pool. Where do I begin? Food is overpriced, for sure. The burger was ok, but clearly just recooked frozen food. The fries were a pittance of a serving, greasy, and not crisp. The ice cream is good, but how can you mess up soft serve? You have to try hard. You can get a better variety of ice cream, and just as good soft serve at King Kone. But the one-star comes because the owner is a terrible businessman, and a misogynist at that. I was parked in the handicap spot. While my daughter and I were eating, their supply truck, instead of driving to the back, where supplies end up getting unloaded, parked right behind our car, pretty much blocking off every single handicap spot. We were not in a terrible rush, but I didn't know if it was a supply truck for them, at that point, or a customer. So I asked at the counter, politely, if they knew who the truck was, and if it was a supplier or customer. The woman at the counter said she'll check in the back, because she thinks the drivers downstairs. This guy comes up, and says, essentially, "what's your problem?" I explained that the truck was blocking me in, and I was just wondering if you knew how much longer was going to be. I wasn't yelling, I was simply asking. He then looked outside and goes, "give me your keys, I'll drive you out." But it wasn't with the tone of, "I'm being helpful individual," it was more along the lines of the attitude, "you're a woman, clearly you can't drive, but I, being a man, can back you out of the situation." I said thank you, but no thanks, I would just like to know when the truck was leaving, if it was going to be soon. He, again, got rude and offensive, and said the guy would be done in a minute. I was going to order ice cream, in the meantime, what I said, "OK, but it is a little upsetting that he has all the handicap spots blocked off." To which he responded, "What do you want me to do? We need our supplies." At that point, I told him that I was about to order more, and have ice cream while we waited, but with that attitude, I would be ordering anything else. I then went out to my car, which fortunately is small, and I was able to squeeze it out, but not easily, not because I'm not a good driver, but because it was incredibly tight. I then called, to speak to him again, to see if perhaps he'd had settled down. Instead, he doubled down. Even when I pointed out, he could've resolve the situation by simply apologizing, and being nice about it, instead of being insulting. He further made things worse. My wife and I had a fun eventful Saturday, when we got home we needed a place for dinner. We had seen an article about the Red Rooster Drive-in and decided to try it out. What a great place to step back in time. Great food. I had a double cheeseburger on lettuce ( I'm gluten free) along with cheese fries. Burgers were juicy and delicious. Fries were also great, even if they weren't great for my cholesterol. Sitting outside meant we could listen to the DJ spinning tunes from the 50's and watch the kids playing on the back lawn. First off, the place was disgusting when we came in. Fries all over the floor, random other detritus.. despite a full staff working behind the counter and not appearing particularly busy, nobody had swept the floor in hours it seemed. What's worse, I sat down at one of the booths inside like an idiot and managed to get BBQ sauce all over my pants. My fault I suppose for not examining more closely (I've sat down a few times in my life, I've gotten the hang of it), but the place was filthy. The staff was surly as anything. The latin gentleman "helping" us didn't offer any greeting, so after looking at his stone-faced expression for a few seconds, I just placed the order. Never did get a word out of him, although that means he did cough up the nickel he tried stealing from my change without attitude, so that's nice. Wait no, he's a cashier - I'm sure it was an accident, and that he gave back the wrong change unintentionally. Because people that deal with money all day make mistakes like that. The ice cream was so-so at best - I didn't much care for it, and my girlfriend got a stomach ache from it. Boy, what a laundry list! Anyway, the place looks cute, but really is kind of a dirty dump with crappy food. I don't see the appeal, except for maybe some kind nostalgia. I think you must be completely in love with the idea of what this place was/is or have children to enjoy this place. Sadly, Putnam Co. is missing gitchy, family fun places so this place is sort "it". The food is frozen, lower quality, over priced summer fair. I'm surprised at how freezer ready the food is but no one seems to mind paying $6 for .50 frozen tiny burger patty. The frozen treats for ridiculously over priced and larger families should prepare to pay heavily for a soda, burger, fries and ice cream dessert per person because the portions are not sharing sizes. The location is great and it is open on a late night for malt, so we do take advantage of that a couple times a year. For a fast food joint, the Red Rooster is the best of the best. An institution that has been immortalized in print and on TV (David Letterman and Man vs Food), and is well loved by residents. I've been going here since I was a little nugget, and have never been dissapointed, but I do have my favorites. The burgers are the classic and are good, but don't expect behemoths we've gotten used to in America. The chili dogs are to DIE for, absolutely great. The chili is good by itself as well. Chicken sandwiches are scrumptious. Always, I mean ALWAYS, walk away with either a malted milkshake or a soft serve cone (with rainbow sprinkles, naturally). Inside seating sucks, except in winter. RIPOFF ALERT!! The Red Rooster is the abusive boyfriend you get away from but keep going back to. It is nothing more than below average food that's super over priced, I can't quite figure out how or why the Red Rooster has had press and hype around it. The Yelpers giving this such rave reviews are doing it simply because of childhood nostalgia, local pride, or the fact that they read about or saw the Red Rooster on TV. But when you actually go in, you'll see all the press and write ups are from the late 90's/early 2000. That should have been a red flag, but I ordered anyways. Let me start with the good, which is desert. The milkshakes and ice cream are the only thing that will make me return. The staff is always super friendly, which you won't get at the big chains. But the food isn't up to par even with the McDonald's or Burger King right next door. The food is average at best - small portions, standard fast food quality, and nothing to write home about. The burgers cost five bucks without fries, and are nothing more than your standard small patty you'd expect to find at your grocers freezer. But we got two burgers, onion rings, a soda, and a milkshake, and it cost $22.00. What a rip! The dining / ordering area is small and cramped, and the restaurant obviously doesn't take cleanliness as a priority. This place is one surprise health inspection away from a thirty day shut down. Do yourself a favor... Skip the red rooster. You'll get more for less anywhere else. read more

I've been driven past Red Rooster a bunch of times, and finally went. The architecture called to me. I'll start out with the good. The service was solid. Really nice staff, patient, and dealt with the weird guy that was obviously looking to flirt/for attention without batting an eyelash. My Sprite didn't have syrup in it, and they were quick to get me a different drink, and had a guy hook up better Sprite if I wanted that. Now to the mediocre, aka the food. Nothing was particularly good or memorable. The burger was a burger. The fries were average. Kinda bland. Soft serve was also very run of the mill. Didn't get a chance to mini-golf, but it looked cute. I don't know the area at all, but it seems to be one of the few places that's open late, which made it sort of a town hub. A Covid nightmare. One line indoors to order. Everyone too close to each other. When you have finished ordering at counter , you must then wait in no place in particular until person behind counter hands you your completed order. At this point, to exit, you must pass everyone in back of you that is waiting to order. Although there are 2 doors that can be used to enter and exit, customers are forced to double back and exit the same door that they entered - passing all customers in line. I saw this place on our way up to Stockbridge, MA and couldn't wait to stop on the way back. We got the chicken tenders, clam roll, and fries - all three were super delicious. We also got 2 thick milkshakes - not the best I've had (think there was too much chocolate syrup in them), but still delicious. Place has gone from bad to worse, and I fail to see the attraction. They recently did renovations, which I imagine could not have been so difficult for them, because they charge way too much for their mediocre products. Last week I was in there, as I've been many times, and the owner who has seen me many times asked, "Can I help you Miss?" I corrected her by replying, "Mr.". Perhaps her error was due to my height and that my Covid-19 mask was covering my face. Either way my wife assures I don't remotely resemble a woman. Nonetheless, 4 or 5 of her teenaged employees laughed loudly and continuously about it, making me feel even less comfortable. Their reaction was so over the top, I think they were high. The lady then said, "Oh I wasn't talking to you, it was the other person standing there." This was a lame attempt to cover it, especially since there was no one else standing there. I was about to walk out, but my wife was craving her sundae, so I placed an order for her sundae, and a second small cup of hard chocolate, with no toppings. I asked for nuts for the sundae. The same lady preparing my order was looking for the nuts, and when she couldn't find them, she asked her giggling crew. Her English was so intelligible, they couldn't understand what she was looking for. One asked, "What do you need, tops?" Does tops even sound like nuts? I finally intervened and said, "Nuts" which they heard right away. The lady completed my order. Then I was charged $11 for a small sundae and a single-scoop of freezer-burned stale chocolate ice cream. Needless to say, my experience was expensive and unenjoyable. In 2013, I posted a review noting that many of the 5-star reviews come from people that are not from the area and suspected that they were posted by friends and relatives. I believe this may be good for teenagers to hang out, or for young adults to bring small children, but for people looking for a place to get ice cream outside, I'd recommend the place in Carmel.
