We had dim sum at Red Star and had quite a selection since we had a large party. You have to order from a photo menu where you populate how many dishes you want for your table. Tea was good and flavorful. Service was good and dishes came out in a decent time. The only standout dish was the seafood pan fried noodles. The other dishes were standard dim sum dishes. There are two floors. If you have anyone in your party with mobility issues - best to stay on the main floor. Parking can be brutal since this area is extremely busy. What I liked about Red Star was that every dish was consistently good Cantonese food. As a US visitor looking for good Cantonese food in Richmond, the big question is where do you go? You don't find many reviews for Canadian restaurants on Yelp and I questioned those rankings. You could also look at Google Reviews, Google search results rankings, Trip Advisor, and ask locals. Each of those provide different answers on where to get good or the best Cantonese food in Richmond. You can't go wrong with Parker Place bbq and HK BBQ Master and there are lots of good dim sum places, but if you're looking for Cantonese sea food for dinner, then there's no consistent recommendation. Ultimately, we went with the recommendation from locals, went to Red Star in Richmond, and we were very happy with the choice. We had many of the same dishes that we order at home when we go out for Chinese food. The Peking duck was very good. We had the duck meat served chopped up with lettuce cups. Sizzling beef with bbq sauce was tender. Sautéed pea sprouts were very good. The star of the meal was Dungeness crab served sautéed with ginger and scallions. The crab was a bit of a hassle to pick out the meat, but I had to try Dungeness crab once on this trip. The service was very good. One piece of advice is to call in advance for a reservation. The restaurant is very busy and it seemed like most of the places on our list of where to go were so busy that they couldn't take walk-in's. read more

Coming from LA where Chinese food is pretty good, the quality here was superb, service amazing, everyone was so nice and didn't have the attitude you might get elsewhere. Delicious dim sum. You'll notice a lot of local elder Chinese and families dining here and staff speaking Chinese with guests. That's a good indicator that the food is legit. That's also a heads up not to expect Western standards of service like constant checking in without you initiating a request. If you're wondering why the stars are low, it's because Asians don't give As. To request refill the tea, tilt the lid to sit vertical in the pot and someone will come to refill your tea. You are given two teapots at the beginning, one has a paper label with green print on it ... This has the tea. The other pot is just hot water so you can refill the tea when you've drank it all. An uncommon dim sum item is the curry baby squid that my friend ordered. The quality of food here is great. I enjoyed the bean curd with greens and daikon cake. The egg tart and brown sugar cake are delicious desserts. The brown sugar cake did not have the soggy bottom that happens when the steam condensation drips down. read more

Me and my family got all of our food within 20 mins since we went on the 2nd day of chinese new year, so the servers gave us everything before the rush came in. The produce didn't taste that fresh the chicken had a "chicken taste" and the egg with crab had a strong seafood taste and not in a fresh way. It was just really average and nothing stood out to me. Another weekend that called for dimsum. My dad had recommended Red Star for this outing and made the reservation. They are quite busy, so I'd suggest doing the same. Located on the second floor of the President Plaza, parking is ample and easily accesses the restaurant if you park on the second floor of the parkade. The quality of dimsum is good, but ordering it could be quite the exercise considering it was only in provided in chinese. I'd imagine they also had an english sheet, but that was not offered to us. Thankfully, there were multiple people at our table that could translate for us. Among the highlights were their rice rolls with hoisin and peanut sauce. The rice rolls were super soft and delicate. Other tasty dishes included the chicken feet, spareribs, and the har gow (shrimp dumplings). The har gow was flavourful beyond the typical ones with a more pronounced white pepper and sesame oil flavour. As a fan of both things, it made them extra delicious to me. I'll be returning and am looking forward to trying more items on the menu. read more

We've been coming here for many years now for Dim Sum. Even in Richmond not all dim sum is created equal. This place has authentic and delicious Har Gow, Siu Mai, rice rolls where you can taste all of the ingredients, even the rice in the rice rolls. Their tea is proper loose leaf tea (and not the giant tea bag in the tea pot). Service and ambiance is modern Hong Kong Cantonese style, which is our preferred style of Dim Sum. read more

This place used to be good, but the food and service have gone downhill. We ordered a King Crab set dinner for a party of 10, and we also ordered additional dishes. We have to say it was pretty disappointing. A big disappointment was the House Chicken with Brown Bean Paste. The chicken was not tender, and it was real dry as cardboard. Breakfast and brunch...dim sum. This restaurant seemed busy during peak hours. The inside looks a little run down. Menu provided on a sheet. Write the number of that dim sum you want and give it to the server. Food came out slow. Food was ok. Was disappointed that we found a piece of metal scrub in our congee. It didn't come up until we were almost done with it. Bleeehhh. The server did not seem surprised. Server gave no expression and went to the kitchen with the item. I have never come to this location, I always knew about it, but also from the community also know that the one on Granville is the better one, but if you do not try, you definitely do not know. As we were planning to go to dim sum on Good Friday, it was impossible to find a place that would take a table of 4 with minimal wait at around 11 AM... well not impossible if you come here, plenty seats available, weird.. yes.. especially since our two stops prior to this place were packed to the brim with hungry people! A warning to the wise, do not park in front of the T&T, there's only an hour of time here, and you will get ticketed, as one of our party learned this the hard way! Park in the back, where you go up a ramp, and read where you park, some spots have time limits, and it's not worth it to get one of these that will ruin your aftertaste of the meal! This is one of the higher ended dim sum joints in Richmond, as you can tell from the nice decor and the higher prices. I came in here, as my dear and her brother were already seated, and I didn't know there was a seperate section on another floor where you can sit. It's kinda hidden, as you walk into the restaurant, and along the wall, just keep going straight, you will hit some stairs that take you to a downward path. A nice hidden area with more dining tables that sits right beside the kitchen is where we sat on this beautiful Friday. It's an order off a sheet restaurant, no old-time push karts here (don't want to ruin the carpet now!) so if you're wishing for a place to see before you order, this isn't.. and is.. somewhat.. they do provide a menu with pictures! We ordered quite a variety, with the standard har gow and siu mai (stuff I don't usually order, but some others wanted it!), shrimp rice roll, deep fried chicken knee, chicken feet, spare ribs, hot and sour soup, duck tongues, and a big bowl of century egg and pork congee. A good variety, and everything came out in a timely manner, the food was pretty good from the preparation to the end taste, except for the hot and sour soup, as it was on the too sour side, with no need to add anymore vinegar to the equation. The bill came out to be higher than what I thought, also adding to the total was the $1 tea charge per person. I'm giving this a 3.5 on the rating, with a thought on the price, as compared to others, it's a tad high. Maybe I have been spoiled just recently at the Peninsula as they kept on coming with changing my plates consistently, and they were busy, unlike here, which, as I said earlier, you could get a seat, with many tables empty on a Good Friday! They did however come across and keep refilling the tea pots, and the food came quite quick, and they never did rush us (like there was a line-up....) but for the price there are options for you... the usual suspects like Kirin, Fisherman's Terrace, Sun Sui Wah.. all about the same in the $$$. Went for dinner last night for Peking Duck and it was a big disappointment. Pieces of skin and meat were dry. I have a feeling it was not freshly made. Even the wraps were bad. So thick and chewy. I have to say it was the worse that I've ever had. The second dish that they made out of the duck was lettuce wrap. That was just ok at best. Needed lots of hoisen sauce. Again it was dry. Ordered the Black Cod in soy sauce and it was also over cooked. The only thing that was ok was the Braised Beef. It was tender and juicy but my son didn't care for the mushroom gravy as it has a funny taste to him. So for $145 dinner, it was not worth it. I should have went to Kirin as that is usually my go to restaurant for dinner in Richmond when I come to visit. Also service was not that good either. read more

Also, for those that pay via credit card, be careful as the counter staff there have been adding an auto 15% tip before handing the machine over which is totally unacceptable. How much gratuity to pay should always be up to the customer and not the staff. If the service warrants a certain tip percentage then I will be more than willing to offer it. Price/quality (1/4): Came here for dim sum and I was quite disappointed. While they had all the standard items, many of those were subpar. For example, the shrimp dumplings had bits of shell and even shrimp legs, and the abalone soup dumpling had improperly cooked abalone, which was also quite fishy. Steamed prawn dumpling - Excellent and hot! Fish paste with bean curd in rice roll - just ok and a bit salty. The lunch special - Soy sauce chicken with rice only $2.99. Wow, good deal and good enough for a person. As usual, if you're not the regular customer or know anybody there. The service would be better!! This place is located in President's Plaza across from aberdeen. There is free parking in the parkade next to it. The third level has 3 hours of free parking, the second level is 2 hours and the first level is one hour. The restaurant is located on the 2nd floor? Just above the food court in the Plaza. They have a menu with pictures which is really helpful. The prices are a bit more on the expensive side but the food was pretty decent. The way you order is with the pencil and the paper and you hand it in. I would come again if I was in the area but since we're in Richmond, I would want to try other dim sum places for comparison. read more

I came here for dinner with my parents a few days ago. I can't remember exactly what we ordered, but we did have fish, a fish soup, and lobster with noodles. All the dishes were very tasty. Service is typical of Cantonese restaurants: they show you to your table, toss the menus on the table, and then ask you what kind of tea you'd like to drink. Prices were reasonable as well; our bill was a bit high because of the lobster, but I didn't think it was too expensive. Due to their location on the third floor of President Plaza, they are less likely to be crowded than comparable Cantonese restaurants nearby, especially now that the T&T supermarket is no longer there. I was debating between a 3 and a 4 star. I opted to go with 4 since it would be unfair to compare dim sum here with Southern California at this point. When I was a teen, Richmond had the best Chinese food outside of Asia. Now....I'd have to say Southern California (in particular San Gabriel Valley) has them beaten to a pulp. While I enjoyed the food here and Fisherman's Terrace, it did not meet my expectations...since I expected the best. Food: Ordered the usuals: Shrimp dumplings, rice rolls, sui mais, etc etc. Nothing stood out. Nothing was bad. Everything was a little above average to me. I expected everything to taste better because they did not have carts. Everything appear to be made fresh and brought to the table. Service: No complaints with the service, though I think the staff was much friendlier at Fisherman's Terrace. Needless to say the service in BC is friendlier as a whole, so even their service exceeded my expectations. Red Star looks like your average higher end Cantonese place, featuring dim sum during the day and lots of fancy seafood dishes. We had a couple dishes for our Sunday evening dinner- the black pepper beef and scallops, a fish and mushroom hot pot, and uhhh. Sauteed geoduck or some other sea creature. I forget what the English name is. Gelatinous and meaty at the same time though. The fish and mushroom hot pot was pretty good. Very rich and fresh fish, battered and fried very nicely and then cooked in the hot pot. The geoduck-thing was flavorful and well cooked, although there was more pork than actual seafood in the dish. The real star of the show here was the black pepper beef and scallops though. This was some of the best cooked beef I have had in a long time. Super duper tender while still managing to be cooked all the way through. "Melt in your mouth" as they say, without joints, tendons, gristle, or any other stuff. Just some really great beef. The scallops were pretty good too, but unfortunately nothing to write home about. The dishes came out within 5 minutes of us ordering, which was impressive given how full the restaurant was. The staff, while brusque and quick in that Cantonese restaurant way, was still attentive and helpful, with water and tea refills coming readily. A little on the expensive side in relation to the quantity of food we got, but the quality made up for it. Solid experience overall. read more

Most Vancouver folks don't know that there's a Red Star in Richmond. And for good reason: it's simply not as good as the venerable restaurant on Granville Street on the other side of the bridge. And perhaps for this reason, it's not as crowded either. Which is not to say that it's empty. Most tables were still filled for a weekday lunch. The high ceilings, contemporary light fixtures, and large windows give this dim sum and seafood restaurant a spacious and high-end feel. Large flat screen TVs loop slideshows of menu items; the same items can be found on a useful photo menu, in case you can't read the Chinese on the actual order form that looks like a Scantron form. Craving rice, we ordered some plain congee, pan fried rice rolls, and steamed rice with assorted preserved meats. The congee was good and hit the spot; the rice rolls, however, were rather anemic and lacking the 'wok' flavor of a good stir-fry that the Vancouver location generally produces. A big disappointment was the boiled chicken feet clay pot. They were not tender enough, and our server recognized it immediately upon seeing them, and voluntarily returned the pot to the kitchen (that's rare in a Chinese restaurant!). He claimed the chef knew the problem as soon as he brought the pot back; they brought it out again after a few minutes, but it still was not enough time. I'm pleased with the service, but I feel it would have been perfectly fine for the server and chef to voluntarily redirect our chicken feet craving to another preparation in the first place, if they knew they didn't have any ready in the back. We also ordered the chiu chow style steamed dumplings, the skin of which was too mushy and therefore sticky -- the opposite problem of the chicken feet (overcooked). Despite the attentive service we received, overall, given the higher price of the Red Star menu, I think you can get better for less in Richmond, or else go to the Vancouver side. On the plus side, parking is free and easy in the President Plaza lot (park on the second floor), and the overall experience is fairly comfortable. read more

I booked our reservation for Father's Day a month ago, knowing how busy Dim Sum can be on Father's Day. Much to my chagrin, we were still waiting for our table at 11:25. We watched (hungrily) as many others walked up and were seated. The food was pretty good - stand outs include the gai lan with smoked fish sprinkles and the spicy deep fried tofu the gai lan, in particular, was probably the best any of us had ever had at the table (that is saying a lot!). har gow and siu mai were both solid and clearly fresh. We were very excited about the mushroom & truffle dumpling, but were disappointed. The service, once we were seated, was hit and miss. Our waitress was lovely and attentive, but the bus boy put tea on the table without us asking (which we were charged for an subsequently had removed from the bill) and proceeded to leave without asking whether or not we wanted anything other than tea (we did.) 2014 King Crab dinner combo. This restaurant knows how to steam the crab with the perfect time. A lot of restaurants didn't know how long they should steam the crab for and ended up over cooked the expensive king crab. What a waste of money. The King Crab combo is good for 6 people, but the food are not too filling, so u might need to order one extra dish just in case you feel hungry in the middle of the night. Lol. The King Crab combo includes 2 dishes garlic steam king crab legs, 1 plate of BBQ duck, 1 individual dish of sea cucumber dish, 1 plate of veggies, 1 dish of pan fried king crab and some dessert at the end. I actually tried and oyster duck soup that had rice in it and let me tell you, it was one of the most delicious soups I've ever had. The oysters were yummy. We got some egg tarts here too for the kiddos and I sneaked in a bite which was delicious. I'm not sure what the other stuff was I ate the my girlfriends parents ordered but I pretty much liked everything I tried. Why the two stars? The waitress here was extremely rude to my girlfriends dad, he was asking how to use the credit card machine since he didn't have cash and she basically demanded he tip more then 10%. USED to be one of my favourite places to go but service has really ruined it for me. The food is good. But the managers and staff are pretty terrible. After waiting 20 minutes for a takeout order (after we had paid for 200$+ dim sum order eating in), we inquired about the status of our food. Servers and managers snootily ignored us and talked crap about us to the other staff. They asked us to free up the table- which is fine, but my 90 year old grandmother has mobility issues and there were no chairs for her to sit down on in the hallway where we THEN waited another 15 minutes- we kept asking but they kept saying "almost ready". Finally, our 14 person party had left and it was just me and grandmother waiting for her fried rice takeout and finally just decided to tell them to cancel the order and get the money back. THEY HAD NOT EVEN STARTED THE ORDER- and then they became SOOO condescending and difficult refusing the give us a refund until my boyfriend had really gave them some confrontation. Got my $23 back and left.
