Big portions for dim sum items. Steamed Superior Shrimp Dumplings were so big and delicious. So were the stuffed eggplant with prawn purée. Gotta try the Prawn spring rolls. Highly recommend. Steamed spare ribs with pumpkin were tender and tasty, as were the bean curd wraps with veggies and meat, plus deep fried taro pastry with pork. We didn't fancy the rice flour rolls with shrimp, sticky rice with shrimp and pork, the steamed Shanghai pork dumplings, steamed ginger milk with custard. The congee was okay. As a side note: this review is coming from the viewpoint of an American who thinks that the Chinese food in Canada is better than in the US in general. This restaurant is located on the second floor of a strip mall across the street from the T&T supermarket. Underground parking is plentiful and super convenient if you have an early dinner. All the dishes we ordered were very tasty and portions were huge compared to what we get in the states. The snow pea tips were 3x the amount we get in the states and the price was way cheaper. The crab was super yummy. It was very slightly battered and deep fried and then coated with a really good onion/soy/garlic sauce. The crab meat was tender and sweet. The shrimp was super fresh and had a good springy texture. The fried rice was tasty with pieces of dried scallops. The chicken was very tender with a nice ginger dipping sauce. The only thing to keep in mind is that the interior is that of a typical Chinese restaurant so the plates and cutlery are not the cleanest nor is the restaurant up-to-date. But the food is excellent and the service is pretty good as they switch out the plates when you accumulate too many crab shells. read more

I need to give a shout out to this restaurant, particularly the staff and the dishes. This is the go-to neighbourhood family restaurant for my family and extended family whether it is our bi-weekly dining out with our parents or special occasions taking up 2 tables of 10-12 (birthdays, visiting families, lunar new years, anniversaries, etc). I've here so many times so I don't have any particular dishes to name but we have not had a dish that disappointed us. They also happily adjust their condiments for my mother's low-sodium diet. The servers are EXTREMELY friendly and helpful. We went there for a small birthday dinner for my mother last week. As soon as we sat down, our waitress said to my mom, your brother-in-law, his wife, his brother (and wife) had dim sum there just the week before. How the heck was she able to remember who's who and how they are related for that matters! I usually do not enjoy the crispy skin chicken in most restaurants as they tend to overcooked it making the meat dry and uninteresting. Not this place, it was perfectly done! Solid spot for dim sum in East Vancouver. Has a nostalgic feel to it. The food is pretty yummy and the portions are reasonable. Fortune City seafood is always a reliable Cantonese restaurant. We've been frequenting them for many years, whether it's for dim sum, lunch, dinner or delivery, they're always fast, fresh and reasonable. Some of our favourite dishes includes their salt and pepper pork chops, their sautee shrimp with egg, ginger green onion beef hot pot, house special steam chicken, house special chow mien and so much more. It's hard to avoid Chinese restaurants using MSG, and I think they do a good balance of it. While I have nothing against MSG, I find some restaurants over use it to hide the inferior quality of their ingredients. Not the case with fortune city seafood. Service is very typical of Chinese restaurants, you have to get a server's attention if you want anything, but they do make the effort to provide special touches. One time we ordered way too many dishes and our table was cramped, after requesting for a bigger table, they helped us shift all our cutlery and dishes over. They will also ask if you would like the curtains down in the evening when the sun can be in your eyes. They also started doing discounted dishes for take out during COVID. They are now $18/dish, and they're great when you don't want to make dinner but still have a family to feed. Or if you want to just add a few extra dishes to your meal. Went for a lunch Dim Sum visit with friends and it was GREAT. There was a bit of a wait to get in, but the front was very organized. After we were seated, someone promptly brought tea and utensils. We placed our order and within minutes dishes started trickling in at a great pace. The food was tasty and presented well. The deep fried squid was some of the best squid I have ever had. My family doesn't generally go to the same restaurant over and over again just simply cause we don't eat out a lot. Fortune City is one of the couple exceptions where my family is content to eat at. It's been pretty clear to me why this is the case. Fortune City constantly provides a great meal that delights us all. We recently went for the King Crab special and it definitely itself as my favourite Chinese restaurant. A couple things to note for dinner time. I would highly recommend calling and making a reservation for anytime you'd expect to come by. The night always seems to start out slow but the restaurant gets pretty packed by 7:00PM even on weekdays. Better to play it safe than take a chance. This is especially important because more often than not there will be some sort of event happening. I've seen birthday parties, wedding services, activist group meetups, you name it. Make sure to reserve. My family decided to have the 10 person King Crab special meal. It comes with two different styles of King Crab, fish maw soup, Peking duck, lettuce wraps, chicken, a serving of fish based on what's available, veggies, e-fu noodles with crab sauce, and crab fried rice. It is a lot of food. We went as a group of 6 and there was a lot of food left over to be had for another day. The main attraction was definitely amazing. We had two plates of steamed crab. It's really tasty with the added chopped garlic on top. There's also another dish of what I believe is baked crab. Both are a delight to have and use that special two pronged fork. The steamed is definitely great but I prefer the baked a bit more. There's just a little bit more specialness to have that crispness on the first bite. The other special dishes were all really good as well. It was definitely my favourite serving of Peking duck. Every piece of duck is cut well to have some skin and some meat. Fantastic flavours after wrapping the duck with the rice flour wrap and I'm always eager to have more. The chicken and lettuce wraps are both solid dishes. Big giant portions really drive home that we're having a special meal. I also really love how they make their fish maw soup. There's the fish maw itself but I could also see that they added in some basa fish slices and scallops to vary things up. The final two special attractions were the e-fu noodles in crab sauce and crab fried rice. I love e-fu noodles and it's even better when there's the crab sauce from earlier involved. There's some bean sprouts as well but it tastes amazing just to have all the juices from the crab involved. The fried rice as well is huge and with tons of filling before getting to the crab part. Lots of chunks of crab throughout. We were definitely happy with our service throughout. I think all the servers in the restaurant helped out at one point or another. Very attentive in providing clean plates and napkins for our party. Also very good about swapping out the giant sized dishes for smaller ones. Can't complain too much about the service. Overall, we had a great experience and I feel it's reflective of the effort the restaurant puts into all of its food. It's my favourite Chinese restaurant and my top recommendation when asked. It was a really expensive dinner but there were no complaints at all from my family. I can already say for certain we'll probably be back in the next calendar year to have that meal again if not sooner. read more

If I could rate this place 0 stars I would, but unfortunately I can't. I genuinely created a yelp account just to rate this 1 star because the service was so ass. The food tastes average, sometimes bland, but I've found hair in my soups a few times. As for the service, specifically some servers, disgust me and let me tell you why. In the times where our bill was about 300 dollars, the servers were all smiles and kept initiating small talk. Other days like TODAY when my father visited with his mother and the bill was less than 100 dollars, they received so much attitude and were challenged for asking for the smallest things like takeout boxes or moving to an area that was less loud (as the conversation of the table next to them was obnoxiously loud and had the word "fuck" showing up every sentence) Over all, some of these servers, are obviously not suitable for a job in the service industry, especially a blonde Asian woman with short hair, named TINA who I think is the boss--which disgusts me knowing such a low level person runs that place. She was one of those very servers/workers that were all smiles and small talk when the bill was large. This wasn't even the first time this has happened. Clearly, people like her only treat customers well when they have something to benefit from. Even if they had a "bad day" the disrespect was unnecessary. It's safe to say this is the last time we'll be visiting them. The last time we came here it was really meh so I was pretty sad when my relatives wanted to eat here during our recent vacation to Vancouver. But what a pleasant surprise! Came here for dimsum and it was pretty good actually. I personally love the sponge cake that we ordered wrongly mistakenly for the egg tart. The liu sha bao is not that strong and mostly contain of condensed milk so the worst one so far for liu sha bao across vancouver. The rest they are good enough for you to come for dim sum. Fortune City is one of those places where I go with my family, and my parents will order everything that they know is the best. Well today, we came in at 10am without them! It was a holiday, and the restaurant line up has already started! My favourite dish today was the braised beef tendon with fried rice noodles. The beef tendon was tender and the dish itself wasn't too salty. The Siu Mai (steamed pork dumpling) dish was pretty big, if this is the only Chinese dim sum dish you like, fill up on this one The Deep Fried Chinese Donut wrapped with Rice Wrap (Zha Liang) is usually okay but today, it was a fail. The donut was made with too much baking powder or baking soda that made the donut give off a strong smell We also ordered Baked Bbq Pork Buns with the crusted top - pretty fresh and the amount of meat to bun was a good ratio The Egg Tarts were cooked well but it was cold. Good solid dim sum in this Vancouver East side Chinese Restaurant. This location had seen several changes in management and name, the latest incarnation had been in business for a few years, and has always been busy and popular in the neighbourhood, for me coming here is for another reason; they have covered parking, which is great for my doggie, coming here early in the morning, the parking area is not busy and also its cool so its perfect for her!! I have been trying to find restaurants that has covered parking for that reason. The place opens at 9:00am and we had been here on several occasions and it actually makes more sense to come at around 9:45am instead, as most of the kitchen items will not be available till after 10:00am, and even if you order the steamed items such as Sui Mai, Har Gau, Rice Rolls, they will take at least 20mins. to be ready, so I made a point to come after 9:30. Food portion here is large, most items are larger then the portions you will find in Richmond, I also love the fact that after 10:00am they have several kitchen items that are on special; such as BBQ Duck with Rice Noodles in Soup, Beef Brisket Noodles, Chicken and Mushroom Noodles, all these items are not small, so they can also be shared. For an authentic dim sum restaurant this place has it all, the crowd, the line-ups, the conversations in Cantonese village dialects, the pushy old ladies and men that will not watch where they are going etc. But I guess this is how a Dim Sum place is supposed to be! read more

Wow I was wondering why the royal treatment for dinner tonight. We got the king crab and Peking duck combo and the food was good from the soup to the tapioca pudding ! But almost $700? Plus tip? Guess my Chinese wasn't so good afterall when I thought it was $158. And we got a big crab to boot! Bigger than the other two tables. So considering what we got it was an ok deal but the good service made up for the cost which I decided to pay for dinner because I felt bad for my family who offered to treat. I've heard a lot of good things about this restaurant. My friend told me it was really good, my boss/chef told me it was really good. Well it was really Bad! I came here on a Friday after work around 10:30am. The place was pretty packed and it's a fairly big place. I was by myself so they fixed a table for me in the back pretty quickly (that's the one star right there) I ordered the har gow- very thick skin, the scallop dumpling- smelled funny, the steamed prawn puree with fish maw-found a shell in it, the fried sticky rice-found a bone or something in it, the curry cuttlefish-found the beak in it, and the daikon cakes with xo sauce- it was ok. So I would say one out of six dishes is a big fail. Service wasn't that good either, yes they were busy but that doesn't justify it. Also it took forever for them to give me my change back, I actually thought they jacked it. My bill was $38 and I gave them $60 so I could get change for the tip and it took forever for them to give me my change back. Lucky they sat me in the back where all the linen and takeout boxes etc. were cuz when I was done I just grabbed my own takeout boxes and packed my own stuff to go. Decent dim sum joint and pretty good for dinner as well. Arguably one of the better places in the city for Peking duck. Things to try: any of the claypot tofu dishes, gigantic siu mai, duck with the cabbage wraps, claypot rice dishes during dim sum time. Pricing is super reasonable and they even give 20% off on weekdays for dim sum. Service is surly but efficient. Lines can be long especially on weekends, try to make reservations for dinner or dim sum but usually if you get there before 11 the wait isn't too long.
