I was looking for a good chicken fried steak without having to go to an expensive steak house and the Red Zone Cafe came through. The food was hot and delicious and the service was fast. We were in town for state gymnastics and wanted a good home cooked breakfast. Saw the great reviews and wanted to try it out. Prices were very reasonable. Service was moderately friendly. Good sized portions for the price. Felt there could've been a bit more chorizo on the burrito, but overall a good experience and will most likely return when in town. read more

Ate here for breakfast today. It was completely packed when we walked in but they sat us right away. The waitress quickly brought out our drinks and took our order. What a darling find in my old (and now sometimes) stomping grounds of Lubbock! Traditional short order cooking made fresh and delicious. This is the latest project of the proprietor of the old Home Plate Diners, an always reliable comfort food stop in the Hub City that fell onto hard times after the founder sold out some time ago. The Red Zone is located in non-descript shopping center, but, at night at least, you sense you've come to the right place to get some basic but really tasty food. Your senses will not be disappointed. Coming through the doors, you know you are definitely not in a chain restaurant. The bright well-lit interior, serviceable tables and chairs, bustling wait staff, and quite a hefty crowd for a Monday night confirms your choice for the evening. After being seated, a waitress quickly got some iced tea headed my way. The menu is adequately filled with choices you'd expect -- hamburgers, fried catfish, and, the litmus test for a Texas American food restaurant -- the chicken fried steak. And so that was my choice, at the urging of new girlfriends that had invited me to celebrate a birthday. The cfs was promptly delivered with a delicious coating of white gravy. Thin, tender, and appropriately sized (not outlandishly huge), it was about as good as it gets in my book. I'm not a cfs fan, but would be if they always tasted like this one. A house salad, cut snap beans stewed with tomatoes, and a couple of triangles of toast rounded out the meal. All was delicious even though the tomato in the salad was a bit sad looking but tasted great anyway. One of my tablemates ordered the same meal, and we both devoured the offering diligently, even daring each other to lick our plates clean. It was truly that great and certainly hit the spot on a cold late fall night. The service was efficient and business-like, but, perhaps due to the busyness of the restaurant and the size of our group (the largest in the place), perhaps a little brusque. Still, everything happened in lockstep to promptly get high-quality home cooked food and beverage to the table. That same "brusque" staff went out of their way to thank us and wish us seasons greetings as we departed. I hear the breakfast is terrific -- I'm really thinking I'll go ahead and give that whirl in the morning as I exit Lubbock back to Austin. Every city has a place like this if you know where to look. We were in Lubbock to visit our Texas Tech student and stumbled upon these good yelp reviews for the Red Zone Diner. Food was great, made from scratch, and reasonably priced. This is where the locals eat! It was crowded but no wait and service was quick BONUS - When it came time to pay our ticket our waitress told us the lady who was eating behind us paid for our meal. By far the best breakfast spot in Lubbock! When we moved here we tried all the different breakfast places and this is by far the best. Food is great and at a very reasonable price. It comes out fast and hot. The entire staff (wait staff, kitchen, and managers) are all great at communicating with each other and working as a team to make sure customers are happy. It was good and pleasing to the palate, but the meat on my burger was very thin and seemed like it had no taste to it. There were more pickles and lettuce than there was meat. If I had known, I would've ordered the double meat which would be the thickness that a regular burger should be. I will go again, but just not for the burger. read more

I was in Lubbock last summer and a friend insisted on taking me to the Red Zone Café. I ordered the Hamburger combo. The food was great and service outstanding. Had a chance to come back to Lubbock this weekend, and I wanted to go to the Red Zone Café this time. Again, the food and service were outstanding plus prices were very reasonable. Today, I discovered on the web that Ricky Green owns the Red Zone Café. I have been an avid supporter of Ricky since the first Home Plate Diner back in the 1980's. His restaurants are known for good food, excellent service, and reasonable pricing. Enough said...if you are in Lubbock, you HAVE TO go to the Red Zone Café. Good greasy diner food. The place is usually busy and packed on weekends, but they turn tables pretty quickly and can get you sat and fed faster than you would think. Definitely nothing fancy, not the cleanest place in town but the food is fantastic. My go-to is the huevos rancheros. I like the Red Zone Burrito as well. World's tackiest restaurant. I mean it. Noisy. Busboy cart rolling inches away from customers. Loud clanging plates in your face. Orders taken before you even sit down. Margarine!!! No joke!! Instead of butter for the waffle. Tropicana orange juice in a warm bottle with a cup of ice on request. No fresh squeezed. Waffle was soggy. Bacon, even after asking for extra crispy, was an amass of grease. Tabasco sauce had drops on the bottom. I asked for a new one and I get another one with drops in the bottom. The waitress objects. Waffle takes 10 minutes more than the eggs. Loud, babbling Spanish from the kitchen, of course: Tacky. One of the most unpleasant experiences I've ever had at a breakfast place. I gave it 2 stars as it was still edible and I felt sorry for them. Somebody needs to go to cooking school and learn the basics of quality ingredient shopping, how to serve people and place the customer first. As far as ambiance, it's world class tacky. I will make a notation of it and as a joke, tell friends to at least walk in and sit down, to glean just how unpleasant a restaurant can be. read more

Love, love, love this place! The food is cheap and flavorful, the staff is attentive and the atmosphere is like a Southern diner. When you sit at your table, you can pick out the regulars and see the waiters/waitresses greeting them, and asking about their week. One of Lubbocks hidden little treasures. Found this place while looking for a good rating with a low cost. Gave it a try with a friend and was very impressed. The waitresses there were great and actually cared about providing great service. We arrived during dinner rush and it's a seat your self restaurant and it was a bit difficult finding a spot to sit, but we didn't have to wait long. They do serve their breakfast menu all day and was glad they did because I was really wanting some bacon and eggs. The cooks cooked a great dinner, scrambled eggs were just right and the bacon was crisp. The ice for the drinks is like Sonic's ice , which I liked. The prices for what you get were great. Overall I would highly recommend this place to friends and would love to go here again. read more

To start off with the food is good so I would recommend the drive thru. I went in there today and sat down a was totally ignored by the waitress. This has happened several times before but I keep hoping it will change but it didn't. I finally asked another waitress if she could help us and she told our waitress "you have two people at your table" to which she replied "I didn't see them". So she heads over and helps the table next to us that was just sitting down. So we waited another 5-7 minutes then got up to leave and she said the other waitress will get your drink order. Really, we were ignored for over 10 minutes and now you care! The tall,red headed waitress is RUDE and always leaves mid service to go out back. So you just sit there and get told she took another break. Must be nice! read more
