after being told at several downtown establishments that you either had to have a reservation or there would be a 1-2 hour wait, we wandered into Redeye. Glad we did. They seated 11 people immediately and were pretty full. We had 1 waiter and he was amazing. Kept our drinks full, took our appetizer and meal order to perfection and had time to carry on and joke with us the entire time. It was a bright spot for our trip and oh yea, the food was amazing! Hats off to these guys, they freaking get it! Every single person on staff here was pleasant and accommodating the entire time were were there. I WILL GO BACK and so should you! This is a good little find. The service was friendly, and efficient. The atmosphere is that of the old time diners, very nice. The decor is cute. Now to get to the good stuff; I had grits, eggs, liver mush with a biscuit. My best friend had the breakfast special, eggs, bacon, fruit bowl and waffle. The grits were PERFECT, creamy, just the right seasoning. My bestie said her food was cooked to order, and she's picky, so that is big. We are both retired from the army and have traveled extensively. We've eaten all over the world. I'd place this diner up there with, if I'm back in the area, most definitely coming back for a return meal. Very reasonably priced. Family friendly. A nice gem. read more

I came here for a late meal after getting off work. I was in town for a couple days. It was one of the few places still open so I tried it out. I got there a little before 10pm which must be a shift change because there were at least twice as many staff there than they needed for the amount of business that was going on. They sat me at the counter, which normally would have been fine with me but for some reason this is where the plethora of staff decided they needed to congregate. I spent my 30 minutes literally surrounded by staff who were just hanging out. It was kind of uncomfortable. So my plan for a quick and solitary late dinner didn't pan out. For some reason they had hip hop music playing on the speakers which didn't really fit with the aesthetic of the place. So that was a little confusing as well. If you do go over there around 10pm ask them to sit you in a booth far away from the counter. The food was fine. I ordered the meat lovers omelet with hash browns and wheat toast. The omelet was good. The hash browns were a little underwhelming. I think they had been re-hydrated before cooking and they overshot on the hydration. So they were kind of soggy. The woman who was assigned to wait on me did a fine job. To her credit, she didn't spend much time hanging out with the crowd. She seemed content to focus on her two or three customers. If anyone from the diner is reading this, might I suggest holding your staff meetings, or whatever was going on, somewhere else besides the counter where you're sitting customers? read more

Food was great!!!! Typically I would not give a restaurant 5 stars on the first visit especially if I've only tried one dish however I have to say my visit from start to finish was great! I needed to come to the Epicenter in the am and was in dire need of breakfast. Someone in one of those businesses recommended this diner mainly because of it's convenience. I was immediately greeted upon walking in and ended up going to the bar to order takeout. A young man (with a beautiful manicure) took my order and was super patient with my indecisiveness in trying to figure out what I wanted to order. I ordered a BLT with hash browns on the side - food was A-MA-ZING and cheap!!! This dish was no more then maybe $8.25 which is what I would expect to pay for this order. My second time to visit and the diner does not disappoint. Enjoyed shrimp and grits with an OMB lager. My wife had a classic burger and daughter enjoyed chicken and waffles. What?! I love diners and this might go to my new top 1 diners of all times!!! We went there around 2pm and it was fully packed in there and some people were waiting outside. We got our names in and we're 11th of the line. But we only waited about 10 minutes to get our seats. And before we got in, someone who just finished their lunch said to another waiting customer that "it's worth the wait, worth it!" Lol. I mean, with all the people inside, and the nice looking photos online, it's definitely not a lie. Our server was quick and very nice. Talkative and attentive. He got us our drinks quickly even though they were short staffed. We got sweet tea and coffee, typical not much to talk about. But I do appreciate that they have decaf as an option! Ordered food quick and had a good little chat with him about hiking and gears. Food was...omg heavenly. The server recommended shrimps and grits and chicken waffles, and we got his recommendation. He did not lie about how creamy and flavorful the grits is!!! That shrimps and grits is the best I've ever had. Chicken and waffles is good too but because we had the shrimps and grits first, it falls under the shadow of it. That sauce on top of the grits is a little spicy, curry like but creamy, that spicy kick really helped to make the creamy, rich grits to taste even better. They matched it really well. Shrimps are not dry and good in size. Definitely not a cheap eats, and that shrimps and grits being only $13?! Omg we are going back for it soon. The fried chicken is on a salty and very crunchy side, which makes sense if you pour syrups on it, but I wish it's less hard crunchy and more crisp. Waffle is sooo soft and fluffy! It doesn't make you feel too filling and I love it! We also ordered a one egg wit harsh brown, biscuit, and patty. That's a bit typical but the harsh brown is still well done. Biscuit is fluffy and have a great buttery crunch both sides. Overall good but again... Please order that shrimps and grits y'all that's the star there!!! We had a great time. Especially we paid double the price and waited a long time for a table last night, this fast, friendly, great portion diner experience makes out Sunday brunch a great memory. We already planned to come back tonight or tomorrow morning for desserts or breakfast! They open 24 hours! Why not?! Recommended for sure! We were visiting Charlotte for the first time and dined at your restaurant 3 times during our stay. The reason we kept coming back is the incredible staff. We wanted to extend our gratitude to the entire staff at the Red Eye Diner, but especially the Manager working on Oct 22 and 23 in the morning around 10am (we apologize for not catching her name) as well as Natasha and April. Ordered shrimp grits and the red eye diner special with French toast, orange juice, coffee and side of hash for about 46 bucks. Was upstairs if you're coming from the bus station. Walked there so don't know if there's nearby parking. Waitress was nice and didn't have to wait long for a table. Definetly recommend the grits more than the red eye special. read more

Excellent atmosphere! Very upbeat, R&B and Soul music were playing, staff was friendly from the time we walked in, and food didn't take long to come out. The chicken wings that came with the chicken and waffles were delicious and a hit at our table. I only had a bite, but would like some more. The western omelette (replaced the ham for bacon) was delicious. I couldn't eat much more past the omelette and a few bites of pancakes! My family enjoyed finishing the rest. Due to COVID, the restaurant is social distancing. Condiment packets are brought to the table when your food arrive. Staff wear mask at all times. I definitely plan on returning. It was late, and I wandered into the center looking for some grub. I was hungry. Hungry for something a bit greasy. I stepped into Redeye, where I was greeted and taken to my table. I was thinking I would just get a burger. I went through the menu, and decided on the fried chicken. The description sounded good, and my server said she ate that dish all the time. 1/4 dark with a biscuit and 2 sides. $9.99. Sold. For my two sides, I opted for collard greens and onion rings. The chicken was indeed crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It tasted hot and fresh. Better than I've had most recently elsewhere. They fried it well because it was not dripping in grease. I usually love collard greens, but this was just ok. As for the onion rings, they were excellent as well. Usually restaurant onion rings have a weird crust that is like corn meal and betray the fact that they came in a giant 50-lb. frozen bag. Not here, the crust had the texture of fresh batter. I can't guarantee that; it just tasted good. The onion inside was also natural tasting. If you're a fan of onion-rings, it's easy to tell good from bad. All in all, the food was good. Chicken was hot crispy and tasty , not the best I have had but better than most, sides were good but real surprise was a true hand made biscuits. The large assortment of cakes in dessert case were too much of a temptation so tried a slice of coconut cake and again very impressed. In Charlotte, NC near our hotel, we stopped in for dinner at this diner. It was located in a Food Court behind the Bus Terminal.This place was very cool looking with its retro decor and jukebox which played old time songs while we were there. The waitress came to take our order in 10 minutes. I ordered a vanilla milkshake which was the best I have ever had! I also ordered pancakes that came sprinkled with confectioners sugar. My husband ordered fried chicken. It was delicious.The food came out within a reasonable time but mine was cold so it was sent back. I waited along time before the pancakes came back. I would have rated a 5 otherwise. The food was very good. The place was empty and the service was awful! This would be a fun place to take kids. read more

Usually go for Sunday bagels but came here as a change of pace. Happy with the decision. Coffee was good. Favorite part of a diner is the crispy hashbrowns and these did not disappoint. Brownies and vanilla ice cream for the win! We were looking for a sweet treat on the uptown streets. We couldn't find any open places on the holiday. So we looked for lights and saw the Redeye diner. Our toddlers had never been uptown on an outing since the pandemic. Thus we were happy that the diner had yummy hot brownies with vanilla ice cream! Such a wonderful dessert, generous portions too. My main complaint about the Red Eye Diner would probably be the location and the fact that it's somewhat hard to find. But because it's downtown located in the Epicenter, there's really not too much to complain about. There's plenty of parking in the area with all of the public parking garages near the diner. We parked in a garage across the street. We then tried to use GPS to direct us to the restaurant, which was a little hard to find. It's a little "off in the cut". LOL Once we finally found the restaurant, we were happy to discover that our party of 9 didn't have to wait to be seated. Probably because we came in the middle of the afternoon. The restaurant is relatively large and was busy when we arrived, but still had a pretty good amount of seating available. My family ordered a gamut of different things. My daughter had a chicken sandwich and fries, but got a pancake on the side. My cousins had a little bit of everything. My mom got fried chicken, greens and a side of grits for us to taste. I got the fried chicken and french toast. I'm oftentimes a little skeptical of diners because I don't believe a restaurant can fix 200 different things, really well. But I was pleasantly surprised. They definitely must brine their chicken! We all agreed that it was very good. The french toast was good, as well as the pancakes. I originally ordered eggs scrambled soft with cheddar, they cooked them WAY too done, but when they brought out my eggs over easy with cheese, they were pretty perfect. I don't think anyone ordered anything that they didn't like. Our server was pretty decent, but luckily, he had someone helping when he fell short. I know a table of 9 isn't the easiest to take care of, so we didn't hold it against him. If you come, get the fried chicken! Get the grits!! Thank me later! I received a severely undercooked piece of chicken. This was very disappointing and shocking as no one wants to discover this. I notified the waitress and she took the entire plate of food. I was in a time crunch, so I was concerned I would not have time to eat. After 20 minutes, I still had not received my food so I left. What I found unsettling was that at no time was I even offered something else to eat (fries or something light) while I awaited for my original order. Also striking was at no point did the manager come and speak to me about what occurred. The waitress offered to have the manager come over, but by that time I needed to leave immediately as I was already late for my appointment. I expected much better experience with food, service, and management. RedEye Diner will never receive my business again. read more
