This was my first trip to NYC and were being shown the city. After an afternoon of sightseeing our hostess had arranged for drinks at the Refinery Rooftop. It was a beautiful day and we sat outside. I had the Luster with gin and cucumber. It was delicious. We had guacamole and chips and were enjoying ourselves so much that we stayed and had more drinks and a flatbread Margherita pizza. First of all, the rooftop itself is gorgeous. Seating is crowded yet comfortable, and though there's definitely some noise - it's still a place you can get intimate. Great scene and venue. The service and hosts are condescending (based on other reviews, that seems to be what they're 'going for' here so oh well), but that's a small price to pay with some surprisingly good food. We ate basically everything (there were eight of us) and there was a 99.9% success rate. The standouts included the Maine Lobster 'Nachos,' which are actually tater tots (as opposed to chips) which really allow you to enjoy the lobster more. I was leery - and these were awesome. The Octopus Skewers were delectable and tender, superbly delicious. The 'Whacked UP' 16oz Ribeye was a totally unique approach to serving this piece of meat, and I was aghast when a compadre ordered it, but the way it was presented - essentially broken into 16 cubes and served with toast points - was awesome. We had multiple flatbreads, and they were thin and crackly and near-perfect. Honestly, if you can get past the attitude of the employees, this place is excellent. The bar is on the 13th floor. There's someone (the bouncer?) who operates the elevator specifically. We waited in the lobby as he let people out, then he just asked all of us if we were over 21 before letting us into the elevator, so we got in just fine on a Sunday night around 10:30pm. We had tried to make a reservation before but were informed by management that Sunday nights are first come first serve. The bar was packed but not crowded and we easily found seats. We lucked out with good weather in December (!) and got to sit outside for a few minutes, which was very nice. We got a porch swing seat (although you couldn't swing very much as it hit the wall of plants behind you), which seemed to alternate with couches. At 10:43pm though they told us the outdoor portion of the bar was closing in 10 minutes so we had to move inside. We worried about being able to find a seat inside so the staff asked us if we had a reservation..... Umm okay. But luckily we nabbed a table on the side. Music was very loud; you essentially needed to be shouting to have a conversation with someone sitting next to you. I had A Perfect Pear, which was decent (although I'm not the best person to ask about alcoholic drinks). For the non drinkers, they have lemonade (and other fruit juices of course), which was served in a highball glass (or similar - it wasn't a lot) for $4. My fiancé found the lemonade overly sweet. We also had the pork belly sliders and fries - tiny portions considering the price. The sliders came on half size dinner roll like buns, and we got maybe a cup to a cup and a half worth of fries (I bake a lot, that's how I measure things). Taste wise it wasn't bad though. Will probably seek out another rooftop bar next time we're in NYC. read more

I went last weekend with a big group of friends mixed with people visiting & a few locals. WE LOVED REFINERY ROOFTOP! The place was full but everyone there were the type of people you want to be with in a bar dressed appropriately (I am not talking style but there is no one dancing with shoes off) and people were not creepy or overly handsy which is rare to find in a bar/dancing lounge. The drinks were fantastic, music was incredible, and we stayed until closing. I am so happy to have finally made the trek to Refinery Rooftop and will for sure be frequenting the place. Like other classy NYC lounges/bars you probably need to make a reservation or know someone who knows someone etc. My friend's boss comes here a lot and was able to get us a reservation (table) so it was easy to get into this place. I could see how people who think this is a pretentious place but I didn't really get that vibe, the people and servers were friendly! You basically walk through the hotel, straight to the back (ride side) there are elevators and bouncers. Just my luck, the TWO times I come here, they're doing private events, and it's completely blocked off. At least the second time, we only had to wait about 15 minutes before it opened to public. All of the tables were "reserved" (or were they...), even the inside tables, so we decided to sit by the bar. The vibe is very nice, with adorable outdoor seating. It wasn't crowded at all, probably due to the fact that we came here right when it opened. Our cocktails (Blood Orange Mojito and Baby Doll) just tasted like muddled juice however. We spent the rest of our time sitting here, frustrated that we got such mediocre cocktails for a premium price. And, of course, I understand the whole "you're paying for the view" argument, but I had some expectations to the quality of the cocktails. I feel as if I would've just been happier with two beers on tap. There was another table with bottle service, and a group doing a photoshoot for some social media campaign. I've been here many times but haven't had the chance to properly review it here. This is the perfect venue for a happy hour after work, a Sunday brunch or a weekend good time. Having a summer birthday, I found it to be a great place to have my birthday party (the last two years in a row) with the retractable roof and the amazing view of the Empire State Building. In having a large group of people, with vastly different styles and preferences, it is difficult to find a place everyone would love, but I did it :) Refinery rooftop has the scenery, vibes and awesome drink selection needed to have a great night. To top it all off, I am obsessed with the hummus plate and the pita pizzas. Everyone that works there has always been warm and welcoming. We came here because of the instagrams. We made a reservation online 4 days before, and you have to put a credit card in online to ensure $150 minimum. It was easy to get to $150 with our party of 3 and cocktails, but we enjoyed it thoroughly. We came at noon in September on a gorgeous day. They have several huge umbrellas but there were a few spots that you would be sweating in the sunshine. I recommend coming after 1:30, as the sun goes behind the building just west of the Empire State, and it was perfect. Our online reservation did say there would be a strict 90min time limit on tables, however our entree's arrived 15 min before the end of our 90 min, and we were not scooted out or encouraged to leave at all. I loved our servers, and felt the staff worked together well. The Luster gin cocktail is a must, so refreshing!! I also tried the 13th floor margarita but was unimpressed. My fiancé had the summer old fashioned, and it's the only old fashioned I've ever liked. I will definitely come back again - the view, drinks, and food make it a full package. read more

We were here on Christmas eve day for lunch. The setting is beautiful. A very relaxed retreat from the crowds and noise on the streets. The design elements surround you. Warm brick, barnwoods, casual sofas on the patio, casual dress by the patrons and staff alike, and even barnwood doors on the bathrooms all lend towards a relaxing and calming experience. Yet from our table, we saw the nearby Empire State Building as a backdrop. Talk about putting us in a wonderful mood after a commute from NJ. The wines by the glass were excellent. So was the light menu. My wife had a delicious kale and quinoa sslad while I had the special hanger steak flatbread. Both prepared to be beautiful and tasty. It's a little pricey compared to probably every restaurant we passed. But the experience was worth it. They are on the top floor of a lovely hotel. In fact the hotel is pet friendly as a side note. While there is a decent amount of space at the bar, you should try to reserve a table to avoid some of the crowds. Two friends and I went on a Wednesday night (after sun set) and were lucky to get up without queuing. As we were looking for something to eat, we stood inside and got a table near the elevators which might generally not be the best spot, but for us it was perfect. It wasn't crowded around us, it wasn't too loud, we had a perfect view on the elevators and it was fun watching all kinds of people come and go. But people watching wasn't the main purpose of our visit, it was the food. And the food was great. We ordered the beef sliders, the truffle fries and the guacamole with blue corn chips. I can definitely recommend all of it. The sliders were delicious and juicy. The perfect balance between meat, bun, cheese, pickle and Sauce. The truffle fries were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and the guacamole was creamy, but had the right amount of avocado pieces. You wonder why I only gave 4 stars? I have been to refinery several times and even though I love the bar setup and views, I hate the customer service. I was with a friend and we had an open tab and we got a few drinks. We were leaving around the time the bar was closing. Our check had extra drinks that we did not buy and when we asked the bartender, he kept pointing to another person who pointed it to another person. They made us wait for 20 mins and finally someone came after the bar had fully closed down and she corrected our check. Visited without a reservation at happy hour on the weekend for 2 people. Host was able to get us a table for one hot while we had a drink. We never quite made it to the outdoor patio, sat in the inside portion which was fine since it was hot out and shade was limited. Had a couple standard drinks, negroni and vodka soda. The place gets cold, it's crowded, and the tables aren't cleaned regularly. I would go to any other rooftop and skip this one. Happened to be in the hotel and decided to check out Refinery as it had been on my list for awhile. I had only planned on taking a look around to see if it was worth coming back to (it is!), but Katie, the hostess, overheard me gushing about the swing bench and offered us the seat. I thought it was so sweet of her to do that. I saw the swing and assumed it would be on reserve since it IS the best seat in the house. But, she came right over and told me that it was available if I wanted it. I jumped at the opportunity. I mean, who knows when I'll be back and if the swing will be available then? Although the swing is/should be the most coveted seat, the other seats didn't look bad either. The bar was surrounded by leafy green plants and gave off a very intimate rain forest vibe. It was winter, so the roof was encased in that plastic-y window stuff. Kat, our waitress, gave us some excellent recommendations. She was attentive and took really good care of us. The only downside to my experience here was the bus boy, Luthfer. When we sat down, he came over and, not too courteously, asked if the hostess said we could sit there. Uhhh yes? I know how restaurants/bars work. He looked at us suspiciously before going to confirm with the hostess. I was pretty offended by his questioning, as if I would seat myself like a cave man! He shouldn't have asked us. He should've gone straight to the hostess. I was pretty insulted and was so salty the rest of my time there.
