I've been going to this place since the 'Ta Cosina' times. I really really loved this place, but after the new ownership took over the service has been going terribly wrong, they only have two servers that as you can imagine when it's packed their upset and rude. The food has become very tasteless and does not have that great taste to it like it use to. The drinks are good, but I am so disappointed that after this being my number one spot to go to in the heights now is a place I wouldn't even consider in going. To bad... I absolutely love this place!!! My boyfriend and I have had everything from the lunch special, dinner, dinner specials and BRUNCH and each and everytime the food is delicious, consistent and the service smooth, friendly and quick. We've brought friends and family and each person has loved their dish. My boyfriend usually gets the steak which is freaking awesome but I try anything seafood and it's amazing. This place has the best fajitas I have ever eaten in my life. Not content to stick with onions and peppers, these chefs add zucchini, yellow squash, and carrots to the mix, and it is delicious. Plus, the music they had playing was modern and excellent--a nice change from the tired mariachi selections of too many Mexican restaurants. read more

This place gets 3 stars ...., the food is okay.... the service well .... I have to say that is a hit or miss.... I go mainly because I like to support local businesses around my neighborhood and is very close to where I live. Unfortunately on our last visit we had quite an experience... I told my husband that i was impressed in 5 de Mayo because the margaritas I had were actually good considering we had a few before and weren't as good , I also noticed they were using jiggers which meant more consistency in their drinks ! So we go after a long trip and had 2 jalapeño margs. In the menu clearly states that this marg is made with Tanteo Jalapeño tequila now I have to say I have that bottle at home and the marg didn't taste like it at all .... the margs arrived to the table and well they were good but just a lil too sweet for our preference and yes we understand that everyone is different , so I stood up and asked the bartender for lime wedges since I didn't want to bother our server and the bartender was kind enough to give me fresh lime juice which was very nice, the server came to us and asked if everything was okay and we explained that yes it was just that we prefer our margs less sweet. Now this is where the drama starts the server suggests to ask for skinny next time (umm okay) then I was so curious and asked if he didn't mind giving me a lil taste of the "Tanteo jalapeño tequila" that was supposedly in the marg ...... he got mad right away.... I told him that the marg was good but I couldn't taste the Tanteo Tequila (mind you my husband and I are bartenders/servers too ! Lol ), so he goes behind the bar and idk if he felt like I was trying to get something for free by asking for a lil taste and he gives me half a shot of a whole different tequila as I saw him pouring the tequila of a total different bottle then the other server tells him "hey that's Cuervo "lol and indeed it was lol (yet I appreciate his effort of trying) so I tried the tequila and told him it wasn't Tanteo and he said idk idk so my husband then says it's fine if is not Tanteo no worries just give me another one just not TOO SWEET , server leaves mad as hell lol and he tells another server "make another one and make it extra spicy " in Spanish lol at this point we felt a lil uncomfortable specially bc we were cool about it and we thought our server was going to understand unfortunately that wasn't the case lol no big deal , then he comes with the marg it looks spicier for sure bc it had so many jalapeño seeds and way darker ( bc of the extra agave ) we tried it and holly Molly it was soooooo sweet , we asked for more lime juice kindly but even with that the marg was just not good ,so we asked for the check and tell the server how they were super kind to us by giving us the lime juice and everything but the last marg was bad, he suggests to order something different ANYTHING and we said no, he drops the check charging us for the marg that we hated and didn't drink .. WOW! at this point honestly I lost respect for the place. Any restaurant in the city would take it off the check ASAP without questions other than why you didn't like it and apologize period ! But the fact that this server charged me for something we didn't like and lie about the tequila that was in it ! Failure! Another server the one that made that specific marg told him just take it off the check but again we were offended.The server takes it off the check and we paid and our sever apologizes sarcastically , so I told him "I work in this industry man come on! Seriously! " and his answer was that every restaurant works different and that that's how they work there ....... Wow again ! Its sad this restaurant works like this charging ppl for something they don't like , bottom line this is business and restaurants loose more by doing this kind of things to their guests and let me tell you not only did you loose your 2oz or 1.75 oz of tequila (that's wasn't Tanteo) , your triple sec,your agave and your lime juice from that horrible margarita but you lost two customers. never coming back ! read more

I took the long way home tonight, planning on grabbing some Indian food on Fort Washington. Well, I was elated when I saw "Refried Beans". I remember the previous place "TA Cocina" and it was HORRIBLE!!! Chipotle, as bland and as food court as they are, was much better. I moved here from California, and trust me, I know true Mexican food, cooked by Abuela. This is sorely lacking in this part of Manhattan. We have some Chinese-owned Taquerias, but they don't cut it. So, I am always excited to see a new attempt. Somebody is bound to get it right one of these times. So I gave "Refried Beans" a go. BLEEECCCHHH! OMG! What the F??? It was terrible! And guess what! Turns out that it's TA Cocina with a new name (to skirt the TaxMan, according to the waitress). The ownership is obviously someone without any culinary skills or tastes who is a horrible businessperson with their eye only on the bottom line, unwilling to pay money for a decent chef or decent foodstuffs. You know what? You shouldn't be in the restaurant business!!! Or, if you insist, then be a silent partner and hand over the daily duties to someone who actually has a true love and knowledge of the vocation. PLEASE!!! We want some good Mexican in WaHi. Hell, I'd be happy with a Taco Bell at this point. Anyway... my point? Unless you're not picky, or you haven't been exposed to authentic, good Mexican, or extremely bland is as adventuresome as you'll get... don't go. You've been warned. read more

Customer service is super nice and they were even timely in a thunderstorm We've ordered: -seafood soup (delicious and TONSSS OF SEAFOOD in whole pieces not shredded. Kind of sweet) -mexican chicken and mexican shrimp (delicious tomato sauce, generous meat portions) -enchilada del mar (YUM, lots of quality seafood) -shrimp taco salad (pretty crispy still by the time it came but lacked dressing) -seafood fajita (pretty good) I think everything we've ordered comes home with rice, beans/cheese, fresh crunchy tortilla chips and a tiny thing of delicious salsa/sauce, pico de gallo. Loved it!! My friend picked this place for me to take her for a late birthday dinner. Its small & cute and the food was great. Many places don't live up to our expectations but this one did, even with their drinks!! I had a burrito with everything which i usually modify and my friend had the tacos. We were both very happy with our choices. After our delicious meal the waiter understood my hint that it was my friends birthday and brought over a piece of cake (free of charge) with a candle and even sang happy birthday along with me. I've lived in the neighborhood for a few years and wanted a fun night out, so we went to Refried Beans. I found the salsa to be bland, the margaritas were fine, but the real trouble came with our entrees. I ordered the grilled chicken breast salad and the chicken was inedible. I took a bite or two and noticed something was off, but it wasn't pink so I thought maybe I was imagining things. Took two more bites, and yes there was definitely something wrong. My boyfriend (who is a trained chef) took a bite and confirmed that yes, the chicken was raw. I pushed the chicken off to the side and tried to eat the rest of the salad but had lost my appetite. Unfortunately, the four bites of chicken I'd had were enough to make me violently ill in the middle of the night and into the morning. Undercooked chicken is one of the biggest offenses a kitchen can commit, there's no excuse for that. I recommend this place only for drinks and chips and guac. If you want a full meal, go elsewhere. read more

We waited patiently on Sunday for the place to open. Advertised as open at 10:45 am. We thought 'plenty of time to get settled for FIFA kick-off'. We arrived at 10:30. 10:45 comes and goes. Staff tells us they are opening at 11. At 10:55, staff comes to put out their board sign and we ask again when they're opening and are told doors won't open for another 15-20 minutes. I left a review for this restaurant back in 2014, with some of the same problems I experienced tonight. I know, silly me, why go back? Well, things improved a ton over the last years, and their food is so great, I was willing to give them another go. This review has to do with another mysterious closing episode. My now hubby and I, as well as a friend (visiting from California, whose only request was a meal from this place) placed orders at 7:26 for delivery, with eta around 850. At 830, we both received emails saying that our orders had been canceled with no explanation. When we tried to call the restaurant, the phone line was busy for several minutes. Suddenly, the restaurant was nowhere to be found on Seamless, and they were suddenly listed as closed in Yelp! What? Here's the thing..things happen. We get it. But not twice, with the same MO. How many other customers has this affected? Also, if the restaurant got overwhelmed with orders (which is my guess), it should have never continued to accept orders after that! Further, if that was the case, it's good business to at least fill the orders that you HAVE accepted. If they absolutely had to cancel the order, it was completely unacceptable to do so AN HOUR after it was placed. We are now starving, pissed, and confused about this business practice. WTH, Refried Beans? Don't let us down. Communicate, please! We want to love you, but we also may have to quit you. read more

I tried to like this restaurant but I came here 3 times and each time it was clear that this restaurant doesn't care about its customers or maybe specific customers. One time I came here with friends, only to find that for some reason or another we were not welcomed. We were skipped for a table after waiting for 20 minutes at the bar for one then once we got one the waiters barely came to check on us. Throwing the take out boxes on our table, and napkins on top of our chips. Getting our orders wrong, and food was mediocre, we spent over $100 that night. On another occasion we came back because one of friends really wanted Mexican on a weekday at 6:00pm (happy hour) we ordered sangrias and mojitos which were both on special. When we received the bill the waiter charged us full price and we asked him why and he said we had to ask for a happy hour drink because apparently they use different wines for the happy hour and regular priced sangrias. He wouldn't change the price even though he knew I had pointed at the sangria in the happy hour section of the menu. This restaurant is a mess. The flan is disgusting and they have no clue what it means to provide customer service. read more

Absolute worst customer service! Avoid at all costs! Ordered food from their website. Got two confirmation email receipts with my address and what was on the order. Food arrived an hour and a half late, cold, congealed, and incomplete. Called to complain and ask for the rest of the order and the manager accused me of not putting my complete address on the order, and that the rest of the order that we were charged for and was on OUR EMAIL RECEIPT was not included?!? Asked for a refund after being yelled at for several minutes by the manager who then insisted we return the food in order to get a refund(???). WALKED THE FOOD DOWN TO THE RESTAURANT, and showed the two emails that came from their website. My address and the full order was shown on both emails. Manager claimed that's not what HE got, so it was our problem. We didn't build their website! He charged my card! So unprofessional. Will never eat there again!! read more

I ordered a BURRITO and I live less than half a mile away. Well, 9:05 comes and still no burrito. Can't get through on the phone to the restaurant and it says their closed on Seamless. Call Seamless. My order had been cancelled. WTF?? Is is now 9:30. If I order from somewhere else I will be eating at 10:30. So unhappy. Be careful because I saw in someone else's review on Seamless that this had happened to them as well. Think twice, esp. if you're hungry. My friend and I were looking forward to going to this restaurant which advertised it was under new management. We were completely disappointed. The food prices increased but the flavor did not. In fact the food was from adequate to disappointing. One dish made it to adequate only because the sauce saved it from complete blandness. The other dish lacked any real flavor or texture. Besides the food and its prices (plus a $30 minimum credit card requirement!!), the service was AWFUL. Rude, unfriendly, unsmiling, unapologetic when mistakes were made. The waiter was in a rush, a constant rush. He put the wrong order in for my friend and argued with her when she told him so. This is the only time he really stopped to talk to us. To argue! He was angry and stomped off to put in the correct order. He did not ask for a rush on it either. My food came out first and my friend sat there starving. She ate the rice and beans from my plate she was so hungry. When the host passed by I called him - had to try a few times to get his attention as he was not putting his eyes on the customers, just running around lighting candles - to ask if he could bring my friend some chips and salsa because of the problem with her food. He looked at us as if I asked for a plate of diamonds. Again, no words, no apology, just turning away with annoyance. When he brought the chips he just dumped them on the table and left. When her food finally came I was about finished with my entree. I ate a portion of hers. Ugh! Cardboard, anyone? The worst: when I called the restaurant to describe what had happened, the owner/manager refused to speak to me. She was "too busy", she had "just stepped into the restaurant and had a lot of things to do". Because I was insistent she did ask where I was calling from. I asked if that made a difference. Apparently, because she still refused to speak with me although I could hear her in the background. Well, with ownership like that no wonder the staff is like it is. This place is AWFUL. Waited an hour for my vegetarian Cancun Burrito which was all beans rice and lettuce, couldn't find any avocado or sour cream.
