My friend and I were looking forward to going to this restaurant which advertised it was under new management. We were completely disappointed. The food prices increased but the flavor did not. In fact the food was from adequate to disappointing. One dish made it to adequate only because the sauce saved it from complete blandness. The other dish lacked any real flavor or texture. Besides the food and its prices (plus a $30 minimum credit card requirement!!), the service was AWFUL. Rude, unfriendly, unsmiling, unapologetic when mistakes were made. The waiter was in a rush, a constant rush. He put the wrong order in for my friend and argued with her when she told him so. This is the only time he really stopped to talk to us. To argue! He was angry and stomped off to put in the correct order. He did not ask for a rush on it either. My food came out first and my friend sat there starving. She ate the rice and beans from my plate she was so hungry. When the host passed by I called him - had to try a few times to get his attention as he was not putting his eyes on the customers, just running around lighting candles - to ask if he could bring my friend some chips and salsa because of the problem with her food. He looked at us as if I asked for a plate of diamonds. Again, no words, no apology, just turning away with annoyance. When he brought the chips he just dumped them on the table and left. When her food finally came I was about finished with my entree. I ate a portion of hers. Ugh! Cardboard, anyone? The worst: when I called the restaurant to describe what had happened, the owner/manager refused to speak to me. She was "too busy", she had "just stepped into the restaurant and had a lot of things to do". Because I was insistent she did ask where I was calling from. I asked if that made a difference. Apparently, because she still refused to speak with me although I could hear her in the background. Well, with ownership like that no wonder the staff is like it is. Refried Beans is a great restaurant in the Washington Heights area. There aren't many nice restaurants in the area but this restaurant is a must! I live in the neighborhood and have been here occasionally and have been pleased with every visit. Fresh yummy food for a great price, you can't beat it! Very friendly wait staff, customer service is great, awesome drinks, and sports playing on TV what more can you ask for? They also have the best Salsa in town, must try! All in all I give this establishment 5 stars due to the fact that every time I have been here everything was on point, and have left very happy. Food is very good, and restaurant is a fun place to eat out at, but the ordering service is spotty. Very difficult to call and reach someone; you can call for an hour straight and get a busy signal or someone will answer the phone and tell you to hold, and no one returns to help you. went today and took advantage of the lunch special from 11 am - 4 pm. we had the supreme nacho's and chicken empanadas appetizers. very good no complaints. we had a banana margarita and mango margarita. for lunch i had the chicken burrito with rice and beans, my wife had the mexican sandwich with french fries. i have been to this restaruant a number of times and will continue to frequent this establishment. read more

Always a pleasant experience at this local Mexican restaurant. The drinks are well made (recommend the Carribean and/or strawberry margaritas), dip sampler special on the weekend, and combination steak and chicken fajitas. staff is friendly and accomodating. read more

A Mexican Restaurant that Doesn't Serve Salsa! We've been coming here consistently and it's always been good. We used to have it delivered and it's been fine. Recently the restaurant stopped delivering Salsa with their food. Yes you heard it right. That's unheard of given it's pretty much essential to most of their dishes. I talked to the Manager twice, told them hell I'd pay extra for it and was told firmly they do not do it for delivery any more so we just stopped ordering there. My partner and I are regulars here; I love it, and it reminds me of my favorite Mexican restaurant back home. The margaritas are excellent, the tacos are exactly what I want, and it's just a great standby when you're tired of saying "so what do you wanna do for dinner". The one thing I will say is if you're going to order food from this restaurant, eat AT the restaurant rather than order out. Absolutely delicious!! I personally love the beautiful and eccentric Mexican decorations. I ordered the chicken fajitas and it was amazing. The chicken was tender and the fajita wrap, fresh. Was here last night for the first time and must say everything was delicious! We had the calamari which came with a tangy tasty sauce plus marinara, the nacho chips and plantain chips are pretty amazing, and the guac is to die for. We've been patronizing Refried Beans for years now and just have to say that the wait staff deserves huge kudos for always remembering what we like to order. They also are so welcoming even when it's almost closing time. This is the only "Mexican" restaurant that is close by so that's why I feel people go, the food is not all that, I don't feel as if it's really authentic Mexican food. The Waiters are really great HOWEVER, The Owner, Jhoan, is a complete jerk, everyone was talking at their tables pretty darn loud, but he told me, my husband and my best friend to keep our voices down. We weren't even yelling! No one had complained, it was just him because all he does is stare at his workers and people eat, not at all what a owner should do. You'd figured the owners would be more friendly and open instead when we asked why we have to lower our voices because no one had complained he said he can go to another restaurant in the neighborhood. We use to love this place. It has pretty good Mexican food and the service was also great. However, I have to give it a 1 star and I would have given it a zero star if possible. My 2 yr old and I went to eat there on a Sat for brunch. We had our usual server Arnold. Arnold is normally in a great mood and a good server but on this day, he wasn't! He seemed annoyed with everyone. When my order came it was incorrect. I was in no hurry and my son was happy so it wasn't an issue with me for them to remake it. The women on staff that day was very nice and told me that Arnold put the order in correctly but the computer sent it has something different ( I ordered a steak/egg burrito and I got a egg/potatoe). The order did come quickly but my 2 yr old was ready to go so I only ate half and had them pack the rest up. Later that day I decided to eat the rest. I took a bit and something fell out on my chin. When I wiped it I noticed that it didn't look like food. I hate to say this out loud but it was mucus!!!!!! I was so thrown off and couldn't believe it that I had to walk away and come back 3 times to look at it to make sure I wasn't mistaken. Unfortunately, I wasn't. I was so sick, upset and grossed out! I called the manager 4 times, once a day and SHE never called me back even though the person who answered said she would. We will NEVER return to this place and I have warned all my friends.
