This evening, I was craving German food. There's this restaurant in midtown. I had heard, so I decided to try. Unfortunate reality is that not all German food is. Equally. Depending upon what region, greatly affects the quality and style of the cooking. Upon ordering my chicken schnitzel dish, and quite rusty in Germany and understanding more Latin through English, I ordered what I believed was to come with spetzel, noodles or mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, it came with a big plate of french fries that I could've ordered in any McDonald's restaurant twice is good and for half the price. I tried to make things right with an additional beer, but it doesn't suit the pallet to be served food that one receipt for a fraction of the price. Additionally, the chicken schnitzel was nothing more than breaded chicken tenders. So they need to brush up on the German style cooking. The beer, however, was amazing. lol Exercise caution when ordering from this restaurant. The bad music is also obnoxiously loud. The customers can be exceptionally rude and the wait staff on completion of your payment forget that you need to make sense to move onto the next customer. That is the worst and most hockey for the customer service around. read more

For dinner we had a reservation at Reichenbach Hall. Our sole purpose for going to this restaurant was to order the pork shank in hopes of having a similar experience to those in Frankfurt. When we arrived, we were brought to our reserved table and given menus. The first thing I noticed was the pork shank was no longer on the menu. What?! I confirmed that this was true! We weren't off to a great start. Our waitress was very busy dealing with multiple tables so after a bit of a wait we finally ordered drinks (beer for great, bourbon for me). To start our meal, we ordered the large pretzel with just mustard. The pretzel was hot and delicious although we had to wipe off a lot of the salt. For entrees I ordered the currywurst and french fries (usually an appetizer) and my husband ordered the bratwurst sampler. My meal was awful! Currywurst should be cooked bratwurst topped with curry ketchup served with french fries. This dish was bratwurst cooked in a curry ketchup sauce that had been cooking for a while and had been reduced down. It was overpowering and unappetizing. My husbands dish was good although when the best part of the dish is the potato salad I feel like that isn't saying much either. Unfortunately, I think Reichenbach Hall has become more of a bar scene rather than a restaurant. When looking around you had most of the people drinking only. I noticed that those who did order food didn't finish their dishes either. Needless to say, we wouldn't be back and wouldn't recommend a visit. read more

The beer selection is pretty decent compared to some of the other biergartens though. They also have few choices of spirits available, but beers are definitely the way to go here. In terms of food, I'd avoid it here. A few sausages and fries for ~$40. They weren't really that great either. A portion of schnitzel was also ~$20. Basically everything other than the pretzel was priced pretty steep. Place was also incredibly loud and we basically had to yell into each other's ears. On the plus side, this place is large enough and has plenty of seating available for larger groups. They will not seat the group unless at least half the people are there though. read more

Came here for a pretzel and beer without realizing they were rated as a top pretzel in the city. I loved the butter cheese sauce that comes with the pretzel( well worth a few bucks extra) and the two types of mustard. The service is great and the environment is fun and relaxing. With both indoor and outdoor seating i totally recommend this place for larger gatherings. read more

Found this spot by chance while looking for German food in the city. Spot is amazing. I got the Goulash with Spaetzle, my girlfriend got the Schnitzel with red cabbage. I loved it so much that I ate half her plate. Grabbed the Currywurst for an appetizer and it was perfect. We showed up without a reservation on a busy night. They needed the table for a res about an hour later. We were in and out within 40 minutes. Perfection. read more

We get the plate with 9 sausages which cost about $40~? It was for two of us and we barely finished it, and we eat A LOT. Probably good for 3-4 people. There are some sausages that I didn't really like (the lighter colored ones). The others are great though. The dish comes with a side of some rosemary bread and dark colored bread. We only had the sausages and it got really salty but still delicious. The first time we went, we got the giant pretzel. It was okay. Didn't really find it all great or big. This place is really good for groups, especially coworker type situations. It's a really cool place inside, as its decor and attire seems very German beer hall... not that I've ever been to one, but it aligns with those kinds of conceptions. There's a great selection of beer and German food, including some pretty good vegan options. However, in the times that I've come here, I've been a bit let down by the food itself, especially the sausages. For a place that essentially only features sausage as its entrees, I haven't had anything that's really stood out a lot to me, and I've tried everything on their platter. The wings are also just alright, but I suspect most people wouldn't get that. The value overall isn't bad, and they do have good things for sharing, but food wouldn't be the reason you'd see me back there. I'm sure if I was more interested in beer, I'd have more to say about that, and I'm willing to bet that this place is an excellent stop for beer enthusiasts or even people just looking to go out and have a beer in a place that's different from most bars. Service can be hit-or-miss, and most of the tables don't feel super clean, which isn't surprising with a picnic table setup in a place like this, but I'd see those things as secondary in importance when you're coming for an experience like this. read more

I was extremely disappointed with my experience at Reichenbach Hall. We ordered das boot (2L of beer in a boot!) and understood that there was a charge if something happened to the boot. We assumed that this was to prevent theft of the boot or reckless behavior. We got in two sips and on the second sip, the bottom of the boot tapped against another glass on the table and broke. Turns out the bottom of the boot is extremely brittle and breaks at the slightest pressure. It's not safe to serve customers beverages in a glass that breaks so easily. It was really only a tap against another glass and it shattered. We ended up with beer and glass everywhere. Not only that, but we were charged $75 ($40 for the glass and $35 for the beer we never drank) for what was truly an accident - no reckless behavior. I strongly advise anyone against ordering the boot and I think the restaurant should not serve it given how breakable it is. Needless to say I won't be back. read more

One of my new fav German beer halls! Good beer selection, good food, loud, fun, and traditional to modern German music playing. The place itself is large and spacious with plenty of seating and a huge bar area. Fun beer house decor with plenty of German attributes along with authentic tunes the night I was here. It was actually a funny mix of traditional German music mixed in with modern German pop-rock and rap. Kind of weird to see flat screens with the baseball games on though as they really have no place in a beer hall like this. It's almost as if they have an identity crisis here. Do they want to be a sports bar or a German beer hall? Though I guess it will be great to watch the World Cup here and International Soccer matches. The girls were in dirndls and the bartender dudes were wearing semi-lederhosen outfits. The food was pretty solid with wurst platter ($16.99) I ordered for dinner and the Hofbrau beer ($8) I had to enjoy it with. Pretty solid German beer list with a mix of standards and a few I had not heard of. To be fair the prices here are actually ok and not much different from other beer halls I have been to in the NY area. People need to remember that this is not one of the corporate bars in the area serving happy hour crappy Bud Lights. Also, if you can, try to avoid this place until after all the suits have gone home after work to their apartments or the suburbs. At least this place offers a real reason to venture over to midtown for a beer now. Along with the Heidelberg and Zum Schneider this offers another good German food option if craving it in Manhattan, and much better than that other place a few blocks away (Bierhaus). Reichenbach Hall is a good beer garden, and when they get the opening kinks out, it will be great. A group of 6 of us went on their third day after opening. It's a big, open space with a bar and community-style picnic tables. Beers come in small, large and boot. The large is as big as your head and holds about 2.5 pints. There are several wines to choose from and you can also order a shot ski for your group. We ordered several dishes, and all of them were delicious. It's all worst and schnitzel and spaetzle and kraut of every variety. You'll be disappointed in the size of the fries that comes with plates, so go ahead and order an extra side of them. Our favorite dish was a style of sausage filled with cheese. They were out of the giant (also the size of your head) pretzels, but that's just an opening week issue. The service was fine but did get a bit less attentive as the night went on. But it wasn't a problem, and the manager came around to see how everyone was doing. Good good addition to this neighborhood! As a corporate slave working in midtown, usually have to go either far west side or east side to grab good beer. But here you can enjoy good selection of German beer in the very middle of Midtown. As some of the reviewers say, yes their menu price can be on pricey side as a "beer hall". But while all the other mediocre bars in this neighborhood charge even more, I can't complaint. A big plus here is their service. Although the stuffs here look always super busy, somehow manage to be quite attentive and stay really nice and friendly. This place gets to be really packed on weekdays and it's almost impossible to grab a table without reservation after 7. However, when I came here last Saturday night, almost nobody here and I felt stupid to show up with reservation. So, it seems basically clientele here consists of corporate workers gather up for after work drinks. Besides their beer, food is also pretty good. Felt like I was in Germany last night (Thursday night) when I came here for happy hour with my colleagues. With German outfitted beer girls dressed in plaid with braids and white knee socks and German pop blasting I forgot I was in heart of New York City Midtown. This German beer hall is made for group drinking sessions. They also have a ton of munchies to pair with all the German beer they have on tap. They have these HUGE pretzels that can easily be shared by a large group that come with mustard and cheese dipping sauces. They were a little too salty for me but didn't stop me from brushing off all the salt on top! The pretzel itself was piping hot and soft. We had the sausage platter and tried different types which were all very good. Definitely recommend going out of your comfort zone and trying the "boot" or the ski shots. Came here for a bar association event recently & Melissa was awesome. She remembered the drink I had (plain old water) and even came up to me when I was talking to someone to give me another water! If that's not service, I'm not sure what is. The food is also good though very filling and tempting. I kept having bread and their kleinfranks along with one of the other meats, which I hadn't had before & it was really good. They also have a sweet mustard which also tasted good. Really fun ambiance and good food! Six of us ordered the giant pretzel (which was indeed giant) AND we each got a schnitzel, which was total overkill. The schnitzels are huuuuge and really delicious. I got the Jägerschnitzel (German hunter style topped with a burgundy wine, mushroom & bacon sauce) and it was super tasty. However, it was way too much food to handle- they could easily be split between two people if you are ordering appetizers. This place definitely fills a void of German faire in NYC. The food was good but room for improvement. Feels like the focus is primarily on the drinks. Service was lacking all around. It was either the manager or owner that ended up taking our order after we pointed out we had not been waited on. Why do you come to a German beer hall? To drink German beer in giant steins, eat massive pretzels, and scream at European soccer matches!! This place is massive, with long wooden tables and attached benches, and I had dejavous back to my visit to the real Hoffbrau Haus in Munchen. The beer list is pretty epic with 15 options, served in 1/2 liter ($8), liter ($15), or 2 liter BOOT ($30) portions. I'll tell you what, sloshing around a liter of Warsteiner in a laughably huge glass is really fun. There was also a hilarious shot-ski (yes, a snow ski, lined up with 4 shot glasses), that gave a new definition to social drinking. The pretzel I ordered for the table was almost as broad as my shoulders and served with your choice of dipping side (I picked hot mustard of course). This was THE BEST pretzel I've ever eaten (and I love pretzels). Still craving it. Why I'd never been here before, I don't know. But I'll be back to watch any sporting match. read more

This is a really great place if you like big beers, big crowds, and fantastic German food. Ideal spot for meeting a group of friends! I would def come here after work if I lived in the city... Came on a Saturday for lunch, great service all around and there is an extensive menu full of food and beers. They have 3 sizes for their beers: 1/2 liter, liter and the das boot. Huge sizes no matter which open you choose. Ordered the bratwurst plate and substituted the red cabbage with the spatze. It's a little extra but so worth it! I would def recommend. A fairly spacious beer hall with about a dozen German drafts on tap. I opted for a Hefeweizen and a Radler that I haven't seen elsewhere. The hall is quite accommodating and was able to host a beer pong tournament while carrying on regular business. In regards to food, the pretzels are very good. They're huge and I highly suggest them! I could easily see this becoming a regular stop for me when I'm in the city. First, the staff are very friendly and go out of their way for you. I can't stress enough how important that is... Every single employee I encountered gets an A+ for attitude. I walked in like twenty minutes before they were actually opening and they were very cool about it (they let me come in and sit down, instead of telling me to come back in twenty minutes which is what 99% of other restaurants will do if you try to go in early.) They have some great German beers (the grapefruit beer, though entirely less manly, is also very good.) If you like German food, they do it very well here. I had the bauernwurst which was excellent. I had a great experience dining at Reichenbach Hall this evening. Dining with my husband, we started off with a pretzel accompanied with Obatzda cheese and spicy mustard. The pretzel itself had a nice, soft texture and was perfectly complemented by the Obatzda cheese - a must-try! We washed that down with a Grapefruit beer which was delicious and had a great citrus zing to it. My husband ordered the Beef Goulash & Spätzle for the main course. The beef was perfectly cooked and very tender and the goulash sauce was a superb. The highlight of our meal was, however, the Veal Jägerschnitzel which was served with sweet red cabbage and German potato salad. Not only was the sauce (mushroom, wine and bacon) exceptionally tasty but the meal itself is also very substantial and great value. With little room left after the appetizer, entrée and beer, we shared the Apfelstrudel for dessert. This apple strudel is quite possibly one of the best I've had - an excellent ending to what was a quality 3-course meal. With friendly service, delicious food, great atmosphere and all the charm of an authentic German Bier hall, this restaurant is one of the best finds in midtown Manhattan. I'm always up for a good bier halle that will leave me full and buzzed - and won't leave my wallet too empty. Prices are actually not bad for the location. Most beers have the 1/2 liter, full liter, and das boot options. There's a full sit down menu as well as a bar snacks menu. This being my first visit, my friend and I planted ourselves at one of the many benched tables, ordered some 1/2 liters, the Bavarian pretzel with cheese, and the currywurst with fries. Portions were great for two very hungry people, and the currywurst triggered some serious memories of Germany for my friend. Really liked that it didn't feel touristy..unlike some other similar places. Will have to return to try some of the other dishes, but all in all this was a great first visit. read more

I went to happy hour here a few Friday's ago for a birthday party (late 20s). Was a great venue - huge indoor "beer garden". Large long wooden tables with plenty of room. They let us reserve an area without any issues or charges. Once we arrived, the bill could be paid together or individually. So easy and convenient!! The food was typical German beer garden food... We made a reservation, came here on a Friday night and was seated right away. This place was huge and super packed, but the crowd was fun. Food was pretty good. We ordered: Bavarian Pretzel (a little too salty for me), Huhnerflugel (fried chicken wings), Huhn Wursts (chicken sausage) & Wurstplate (combination plate which serves 2-6). For the beer, we got the Spaten Oktoberfest (roasted malt flavor with slight bitter after taste) & Schöfferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen (low alcohol content ... good for those who prefer beer on the sweeter side).
