I scheduled a consultation for my 4 year old cat who has a history of feline stomatitis for a dental cleaning. Due to COVID-19, nobody is allowed to go inside with their pet, which of course would make any pet owner a little anxious. However, the staff put me at ease! A vet tech came to our car where I explained his symptoms and medical history. Then, I got a call once the vet examined him. There was a scheduling conflict that made us have to wait about 45 mins before we were seen, however Dr. Taormina said she would throw in some dental chews in exchange for our patience (which they forgot to include- but it's the thought that counts!) Dr. T was very knowledgeable and happily answered the questions I had. On the day of his oral surgery, I was definitely anxious but was ecstatic to receive text messages updating me on Artyom's progress/when it was his turn for surgery. This was such an unexpected pleasure and definitely put my mind at ease that he was being properly taken care of. When it was time to be picked up, he had some extra energy (I'm assuming he was reacting from the anaesthesia wearing off) and seemed to feel better already! The vet tech explained which medications to give him, asked if I had any questions, and we were on our way home with a healthier, happier kitty! Absolute nightmare. Wasted thousands of dollars here trying to treat my cat who is no better today than when getting started. I highly doubt the competency of the practitioners and the level of care received here. Issues: * Charged an arm and a leg for a full panel of tests recommended by the vet. After proceeding with the expensive recommended tests (and they revealed -nothing-), the doctor had little useful input other than to "try different expensive foods, and call us back". * The vet who was treating her no longer works there, but they failed to tell me. I called, left messages, and received no call back. Finally someone tells me that doctor is no longer working there. So, basically - my "followup care" and case details for my cat are lost. * Constant errors by their staff, errors in records/recordkeeping (lots of stuff not recorded), errors in prescriptions, etc. It's like a big joke. Every time I show up they've screwed up something else. I'm terrified about what goes on behind closed doors there and what might be happening to people's pets. I wish I'd have kept better records of this mess, I'd probably be inclined to take them to court to get my money back. I wish I'd have known the vet was totally useless other than rushing to get my money and then providing no post-test followup. read more

Alice the cat-groomer knocked it out of the park with our 17 lb cat who desperately needed de-matting. He barely tolerates us grooming him so we were pretty sure he wasn't going to allow this, especially given what needed to be done. Alice handled him amazingly! She pulled a calming hood over his head and neck and trimmed his nails in the first 2 minutes. We've never been able to brush his lower back, but she trimmed his entire mid-to-lower section while we ran an errand. We returned to a much happier, neater, partially-lion cut cat. I can't say enough about her expertise and professional care for our temperamental cat. read more

I took my cat Kiki in to have a lion shave. This was her first time being groomed. Alice the groomer said it would be about an hour so I dropped Kiki off and ran some errands for a little bit. About 45 minutes latter I went back and to my surprise Kiki was finished. I thought her trim turned out awesome. Alice said Kiki was hell on wheels. We had a good chuckle about that. I highly recommend Alice to anyone who wants their cat groomed. She was very nice and professional and her work area was very clean and it wasn't hectic at all. I'll be back. Thanks Alice! read more

It's great except they charge you for every little thing. Had appointments for just booster shoots for the kitties and each time I took them in over a 3-4 month period I kept being charged for an exam even though I said no exam just the booster shots. They give great care but damn they push services that may not be needed on the younger cat clients that are healthy. read more

Still 5 stars! My other Maine Coon boy got sick and needed attention quick. As always, everyone was attentive and caring and I was able to get him in that afternoon. This is a big cat, like 28 pounds big. They handled him expertly and after some fluids and meds he was fine. I can't say enough great things about this practice. I have been bringing my cat here for four years. The staff have been so caring when working with him. They take time to explain procedures and discuss options for treatment. When my guy was facing an expensive procedure, they informed me about the Care Credit program to pay over time w/o accruing interest. I also appreciate that the cat hospital had one been a residence, and rather than destroy an existing structure they repurposed an existing building! Finally, all the staff have very friendly demeanors when dealing with pet owners! Great crew!!! read more

I've been taking my kids here for about ten years now. Every vet that has taken over the care of my babies have been WONDERFUL and very professional and compassionate. When my little one wasn't doing well and her kidneys were failing, Dr. Lambert was so sweet and caring and truly helped make things easier when the time came for my baby to be put to sleep. For the last five years, Dr. Phillips have taken over for the care of my other kids and she has been wonderful, too. Due to my work schedule, lately Dr. Trosclair has been overseeing my elderly cat's health. They all stay right on top of things concerning the health and well-being. Any time I have a question, they're always either available or they call back promptly if not available. The staff is top-notch and I couldn't ask for a better animal hospital than these guys. read more

I've been looking for a top notch vet for my cat, Zena. I didn't want to take Zena to the vet until I found Reno Hospital for Cats. Dr. Trosclair gave my cat the 1st real exam she ever had. Being an older cat, Dr. Trosclair wanted to do blood work, etc. She took time to explain everything to me and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg like other vets. Brought my Biggie Smalls in as he was loosing weight, come to find out, he was in kidney failure and I had to make the difficult decision to send him over the rainbow bridge. The doctor and staff were kind, professional, empathetic and a comfort in such a difficult time. My decision to have him cremated was an easy decision and with his remains presented to me from Heart's Companion in a beautiful cedar chest with a personalized memorial card, truly made the grieving process much easier. read more

In May 2012 I took my mothers cat to this "Hospital". Her cat had severe calculus build up on his teeth. We met with the female DVM, and while in the exam, I was told that the cat would have dental x-rays and cleaning, and extractions of teeth that we're not healthy. The office gave me a quote or range of the fee for this procedure. You sign papers of how payment will be handled I choose to pay half and balance when the cat is released after surgery. I left. They called me and said that the needed treatment would cost less than the high end quote of $1700. but still would be $1500. Upon my return for the cat the DVM showed us the x-rays of his mouth. It showed many broken teeth and no calculus. This surprised me to say the least as I had looked in his mouth saw no broken teeth and heavy calculus. I inquired as to when the x-rays were taken .. "Before or after the cleaning because in the x-rays you cant see any calculus " DVM said "why I think they are taken after the cleaning. " and continued to tell me "well you can't see calculus in dental x-rays anyway" I said "I beg to differ with you.. "You see I spent 26 years in the dental profession and you CAN see calculus on dental x-rays" I said "so the teeth were extracted because YOU broke them during the cleaning " DVM "well I guess so" I said" why would you even bother with x-rays after a cleaning ?? Other than in fact you did break off the teeth and now need to see the root tips. " "why would you clean teeth that had poor bone level? You'd just remove them" This DVM couldn't answer straight forward questions. She is not someone I will ever take my animals back to. I should have not paid the balance and picked up the cat and left. I kick myself for paying for treatment that was to me not on the up and up. This "hospital " and this "doctor" (and I use this term loosely) is a poor excuse for a vet. They put this animal through extensive treatment, when they could have seen in the x-rays that his teeth had severe bone loss, and extracted the those teeth and cleaned the few that were left behind. Shame on them for reaching into the pockets so deep for their own greed. I was glad to do this for my mom and her beloved pet... I WILL NEVER EVER TRUST THIS PLACE AGAIN. Poor excuse for a vet. I would have never have posted but they just sent me a reminder for the pet... And after a Year I'm still irked and hope they read this post many, many times along with other people who hopefully won't be taken advantage of. read more

Please do not take your cat here if you love him/her! The woman who manages the front desk & according to her the doctors schedule.. is the most unprofessional person I've come across. She talks in a really "nice" voice but is condescending & ignorant. Coming here my main concern was getting my cat in for a broken tooth & cleaning under anesthesia. I waited three week for the appointment. The doctor told me she could get my cat in for a surgery within the week. When I went to schedule the surgery the lady said "the doctors don't always know their schedule & we don't want to overwork them" and then went on to schedule me another 3 weeks out. Later she moved my appointment even further out with no notice. I only found out because I called to get test results (which took forever to get & they never called me back to give me results).. There was an extreme lack of communication amongst all staff including the doctor. When taking my cat to another vet they found a heart murmur the first Doctor failed to find. We go to Mountain View Animal Hospital now & so far it is 10x better including prices! I also called to find out the woman's name who works up front and an email for the manager but she wouldn't give it to me, poor customer service all around. read more

The Animal Medical Center of Reno is a wonderful veterinarian clinic. We have, and still do, take all our animals there. We first went there because Dr. Betsy Phillips is an expert in animal health certificates for foreign countries. We were moving to The Netherlands and wanted to have the best in the field, to make everything went smoothly. She was great and everything did go smoothly. Since then, we travel back and forth from Amsterdam and take our cat each time. Not only do we go for the health certificates, but when our other cat became extremely ill during our summer visit, Dr. Donald Long took great care of him and he survived. My mother-in-law who lives in Reno, now takes her little dog to them for every need. The doctors are knowledgeable, caring, and friendly. The support staff is the same. I recommend this clinic highly. read more

We just moved to the area a few months ago. On Monday I took one of my cats to Alice the groomer to get a haircut. She did a fantastic job. Then Alice showed me the office and I met Dr. Trosclair. Today I had to bring the same cat back because she was not feeling well. Everyone at the office is so nice and caring. Dr. Trosclair is very knowledgeable and kind. Our cat fell very sick and we took her to AMC and had an appointment with Dr. Trosclair today. I was supremely dissatisfied with Dr. Trosclair - she is abrasive, harsh, and rude, and also UNHELPFUL - I paid for an exam and left with almost no extra information. She was basically reprimanding me for not buying bloodwork and other diagnostic tests. Dr Trosclair, when I come into your office, I am paying you for your medical advice, and you can be courteous and patient with me. That's what good customer service is. I am not paying you to sit there and be reprimanded for not buying your products. I really tried to be clear with my questions and present my concerns about my cat, but your responses were very unhelpful because you clearly were only interested in putting our cat through some more diagnostic tests and then having us buy further treatment later down the road. For example, our cat had a large, hard, swollen piece of tissue on her leg. I paid to get a physical exam to ask Dr, Trosclair about what that might be. I had to ask Dr. Trosclair several times before she would even feel the cat. She said it was not a lymph node and that the cat did not have an infection. Great. So I asked, 'what could it be'? Her first response was "you have to get a sample and test it to find out". I asked "what are some common explanations that you would expect to run into"? She very quickly rattled off a list of terms that I do not know. In my mind I was thinking OK, great, you gave me a list of medical terms that I know nothing about and nothing about what it means or even what kind of treatment you would need and how that would improve my cat's health. I tried to push her to actually expound a little bit so I could have some useful information, but she was defensive and abrasive. Really just rude. It seems like their mission here is to get you started down a road of spending: first on diagnostic tests to just figure out what is going on, and only then can you start to get treatments. And they don't like it when you try to get something useful out of the physical exam, so they berate and reprimand you for not getting diagnostic tests. It is a reasonable expectation to have an idea of some of the possible things a diagnostic test would show, and what the treatment would be for it, BEFORE YOU GET THE TEST. I have NO problem paying for medical care, but I work hard for my money and I am going to make sure it is being used for something useful before I spend it, and I CERTAINLY will not be REPRIMANDED AND PUNISHED for not immediately jumping on the bandwagon and paying for diagnostic tests. Dr. Trosclair was unhappy that I was asking questions and trying to get as much knowledge as possible out of the exam. She was practically scary with her abrasiveness. I was extremely unhappy. She was so scary that I have to write my impression here, I was too scared to say anything to her face but I wanted to walk right out of the appointment. Dr. Trosclair was not a helpful doctor AND her customer service was terrible, she made me feel terrible. Probably because she is used to telling EVERYONE nothing but "get more diagnostic tests". I asked many clear questions on the kinds of problems that diagnostic tests find and what the treatments are -- NO GOOD ANSWER. Lots of words and names but no REAL information about the state of my cat's health. Getting medical advice should be made as clear and easy as possible for the customer. If you explain why I need something, I will buy it. But I am not going to be reprimanded into buying something WHEN YOU WON'T ASNWER MY QUESTIONS AS TO WHAT THAT WILL LEAD TO. Dr. Trosclair, your attitude is terrible, your customer service is repugnant, and your medical advice is nonexistent. EDIT 12/26/15 - We visited another vet today and the doctor ACTUALLY FELT the cat and immediately said that "something was very wrong". She did an ultrasound for $50 and said "I will spare you the expense of bloodwork and other diagnostic tests because she won't make it". Thankfully we found someone who could give us that information without leading us through unnecessary hoops. read more

Horrible and downright criminally negligent Experience. Cat got sick over the weekend, was taken to the vet on a Tuesday. Got a call back from the vet Friday stating it was a bacterial infection. Was offered a choice of a broad spectrum antibiotic or for them to do a second test to get a more specific antibiotic. I chose to get the second test. The lady on the phone misunderstood and said "ok, so we'll do the broad spectrum..." and I said no and corrected her that I wanted the specific one instead. She said ok and told it would take over 24 hours so I would not get the results that day and they would call me back. The next Monday I hear nothing so I call and ask for results. I was told that I would get a call back before end of day. No Call. Tuesday I call again and ask for information. I get the same lady from Friday am told at this point that "oh you were supposed to come in friday for the broad range antibiotics" Upset now I remark that I had asked for the second test not the broad range ones and in any event they never said to come in. They then tell me that they me that the specific test will take until the upcoming Thursday to complete (nearly two weeks since the sickness started) and I was supposed to start the cat on the broad range. Non of this was ever mentioned in the Friday call. Now really upset and worried about my cat's health I demand to speak to a qualified vet. They tell me they will call me back within the hour. NO CALL. I call back and after kicking up a fuss they eventually give me to a manager who says they can answer all of my questions, after two questions about my cat's health they state that they don't actually know and they will have to ask a vet and they will definitely call me back by end of business day. I was enraged and tried to demand to talk to the vet so I could at least figure out what treatment my cat actually needed and what the damage from leaving it untreated so long might be but they refused to cooperate. They just kept insisting that they would totally call me back. Spoiler: They did not call by end of business day, they have not communicated at all for the last five days. Fortunately, I found another vet and they were able to see my cat last minute and give her some antibiotics that day, it was a minor issue so my cat is suffering no long term effects but I cannot imagine how bad it would be if I was unable to get a simple chat in a reasonable amount of time from a vet if my cat actually had a time sensitive condition. Also they charged nearly $300 for a basic workup of the cat and a diagnosis for a bacterial infection. For these prices I expect exceptional service not the absolute disregard for my pet's health that they showed. I only wish I could give 0 stars. read more

I have found my new Vet. I emailed a request for an appt after hours and it was answered that night plus they got me in the next day. The staff was so good and patient my very upset cat. The Veterinarian and support staff took very good care of my cat and put me at ease with the treatment plan. I will take both cats here and I will also board them when needed. Also, the cat groomer is an awesome bonus...It's a relief to put my cats in the hands of people that enjoy cats..... read more

Dr. Trosclair and the incredible front office girls and staff at Reno Hospital for Cats are stellar. My 18 years old Piko was not eating or drinking for almost a week. I couldn't get her in to see my regular vet in Incline Village for days so I called around & was able to bring her in to Reno to see Dr. Trosclair. Blood work was recommended to find out what her problems were. It was determined that she had jaundice & her liver was not functioning well and she had lost weight. To determine if she had a blockage, surgery would have to be done but because of her age, Dr. Trosclair did not recommend this. It was heartbreaking to see Piko weak and ailing so I had to make the difficult decison to let her go. Dr. Trosclair and the staff were kind, gentle and caring during this heart wrenching process. I can't thank Dr. Trosclair enough for her compassion and professionalism. If I were to get another cat, I would definitely make the drive over Mt. Rose to see Dr. Trosclair and the great staff at Reno Hopsital for Cats. read more

We have taken our dog and cats (two generations) to AMC since we got to Reno in 2005. We love Dr. Long, who is compassionate, extremely experienced, and works as a partner with owners. Dr. Trosclair is a great addition to a very solid staff. She is excellent with follow up. Sasha cuddles the cats and makes them feel safe. Office staff very competent.
