I realized that I am quick to review when I have an awful experience but not so much when I have a great one (which is common among many people) and I need to stop doing that. My wife and I are new in town and were looking for a great cafe nearby where we can get a good cup of coffee, a chill vibe and something nice to eat. Just by chance, Nextdoor (the garbage dump of the internet only second to facebook) mentioned this coffee shop trying to rally everyone to boycott this horrific evil place and force this business to close because nobody is wearing masks (not true) and the business owner doesn't care about COVID infection. While I don't know the owner personally, I have no reason to assume that. But as we all know, even if you are vaxxed, it makes total sense to be forced to wear a mask when you walk in to the place and then take it off when you sit down as the virus patiently waits while you are finished eating until it infects you. What started off as a ridiculous political nonsense on the right has shifted to ridiculous political nonsense on the left. After reading how horrible and evil Retreat is and how they deserve to lose their business because they are anti mask and packed - the words I focused on was "packed." So as "proud center-left liberals who don't adhere to any nonsense" we immediately drove to Retreat since we were looking for a good coffee shop that day. The cry towards boycot actually ended up being an advertisement to us (so thanks Nextdoor). The place was packed. And there is a reason. It's a great place. So putting this political nonsense aside... 1) Most of the staff were actually wearing masks. 2) Those few that weren't didn't bother us. Both my wife and I are vaxxed and boosted so we go on with our lives. 3) All staff was super polite, courteous, efficient, quick (which was impressive since it was so busy. One staff member noticed we didn't have napkins and asked if we wanted some. He immediately went and brought some to us. He was wearing gloves by the way. 4) The food was great as were the drinks. 5) Price was reasonable....for Seattle. 6) We will come back again. read more

I love food, both cooking and eating it, and I can taste when food has been defrosted or too old. They definitely nailed it and gave an amazing first impression, so we will be back! read more

What happened to the cozy neighborhood coffee shop? Fix was never the friendliest or least expensive place on the block, but it did serve a variety of customers and offer some low slung comfy chairs, music and trivia, a nice carafe of wine and decent breakfast sands. Well...it seems they joined up on the $14 craft cocktail train and geared all their rebranding to make it clear how profit-focused they are. There are some beautiful changes to the space; the mural, backsplash and plant-canoe really brighten it up. However, it's not a comfortable setting to enjoy coffee and a book or get to know the group next to you over some beers anymore. Geared strongly toward single or small groups of students or work-from home-ers, it's surprising that I watched a bartender rudely tell two people they could not have their laptops at the bar after 6-though there was no signage displaying this (not even a drink menu on the wall after being open for a month...). The updates may catch your eye, but it's not worth the cold space and indifference by staff and servers that you'll be met with. I'll be spending more time at an establishment that isn't trying so hard. read more

DELICIOUS! I got the smoothie with berries, bananas, and hemp seeds, got the goat cheese & egg on sourdough, and the minestrone. I could tell that the herbs on top of the toast were fresh and expertly sourced. Just an overall effing amazing experience. A total retreat and a treat my dudes. I will definitely be coming back. The service here is always friendly and as efficient as possible (they can get slammed at times, such as when an entire rugby tournament shows up -but that was fun). Retreat is a super cute coffee shop by Greenlake. I stopped in here to get a few hours of work done when the first coffee shop I went to didn't have any seating left. I ordered an almond milk latte and a chicken and greens sandwich. Then I went back for a small drip. The espresso was pretty good as is the drip coffee- both on the darker roast side of the spectrum. The sandwich was sooooo good. They use dark chicken meat instead of breast meat, which brings so much flavor. The bread had a great consistency, and was almost buttery. I don't know exactly what kind of bread it was, but it certainly makes a statement. The avocado, arugula, and tomato round out the sandwich, making it perfectly delicious. I would say that this is probably a great place to meet with a friend for coffee and breakfast or lunch. It gets way too crowded and loud for my taste as a working spot. While I did get some work done, its distracting. Also, the high quality ingredients are reflected in the pricing, so not great on the checkbook if you expect to spend several hours here. read more

When I made my travels out of my day into the lax neighborhood of 'Green Lake', I took my children, my boys, Dale and Luther Jr., out to their first time eating this year. We are not a family of money; of wealth. I decided to take Dale and Luther Jr. out for a treat, my boy Dale, my eldest, had just gotten appraise for his school for his achievements. What beholden me in this facility was nothing short of a date with the devil. The staff was of the utmost rudeness, they insinuated my boy was too large (around the belt) and recommended he not order the portions he did. They said "I don't think you need to be eating all this food, it looks like you've already had enough!" and CHORTLED. Upon eating my food and sipping my liquer, the maskless staff infected my children and I, coughing when they were serving my food (I even saw one waitress sniffle over my soup. I was revolted, I hadn't a spoonful. Overall, I am a man of pride. I believe in service, the respect between persons that guides our communities. What I received was nothing short of disgrace. It was appalling. If we ever want our city, our prized city, to uphold the standards of which we hold it to, then we MUSN'T allow this type of service, facility, and treatment to continue. Really cute brunch spot! There was actually a lot of people in there that it was a little worrying but overall, very lively and sweet place. The workers were friendly, and the food was great. I'm not a huge arugula fan but I really liked my bowl, although it was more of a salad than a quinoa bowl. The flavoring was very good and up my alley as well. I also got a charcoal latte with oat milk which tasted pretty much like a regular latte with the slight powder-y feel of the charcoal. I saw many people studying and working here as well. I arrived a little after 4 and found an available seat at the bar seats. There was a long line so I ordered a drink at about 4:30, intending to work for a couple of hours. At 5pm I'm told that I can no longer sit at the bar if I have a laptop (???) and am told I am "welcome to move to a table" of which there were none available. Normally I sit at bars when I am solo so as not to take up multiple seats at a table, but apparently not at this coffee shop. What a ridiculous policy, and quite honestly rude way to treat customers. I used to tolerate the expensive mediocrity because it is a convenient meeting place near my house and they allowed dogs inside, but they 86ed the dog friendly policy so now I schedule all my meetings at Revolutions down the street. We were looking for a dog friendly place for breakfast after a walk around green lake. And this popped up as being dog friendly. It's a nice cafe with lots of yummy sandwiches. We got a grilled cheese and chicken and greens sandwich. Both were yummy. The grilled cheese came with a small side salad, which was lacking dressing. There was barely any, and a little on the salty side, nothing special about it. But the grilled cheese was good, wish there was a side of tomato soup instead. The chicken and greens sandwich was good! Highly recommend. The wait for the food wasn't long but it wasn't short either, especially for two sandwiches. All in all it was pretty tasty, and has outdoor seating which was great since it was a sunny and warm day. read more

I have been coming here for about two years (when it was Fix), every other Wednesday because I wait for a family member who has appointments in the area. I've been to Retreat three or four times since it re-opened with the new owner and I love it! I'm always there between 5 and 6:15. I usually order a pastry and three-shot grande latte and sit down to do some work. Last night I had my first grilled cheese sandwich and it was amazing! It's made with (local) Beecher's cheese and yummy thick slices of bread. The latte wasn't hot and it wasn't strong, so next time I'll ask for it to be extra hot. It's nice to have something to eat when drinking (they have cocktails, wine and beer), in addition to coffee, tea and smoothies. One really cool thing is that while Retreat is a great place to catch up on work, there is also a corner where the lights are dimmed and there are no device screens to get in the way of the ambiance. How do I know this? Because I sat down in the cozy corner and opened up my huge laptop and looked around and noticed NO ONE had a device screen blaring. I asked one of the employees if the laptop was allowed and he kind of said "not really," so I said I would move. Yikes. I felt really bad, but I am so glad they have the nook that is device-free. In Seattle it's hard to find a cozy little place where you can sit, have a drink and not have a screen blinding you as you relax. Another nice thing is that when they brought my sandwich to the table, I got flatware, a cloth napkin and a glass of water. It's a classy thing to do, even if it's just a coffee and sandwich. It makes eating there a little more special. One of these days I'm going to sneak away from my children and just go to Retreat for a drink in the corner. It's lovely. read more

Very cute atmosphere, coffee was good. Staff was very friendly. Did not order food after seeing several pistachio containing items on the menu (I have a severe allergy) and then seeing the food prep area behind the counter and how many cross contamination opportunities there were. Also, I had to leave early as the smoke smell from cooking was so strong that it was making my eyes water. I have noticed this other times I have come here as well. It's just confusing to me as it's a fairly new building and I could see exhaust fans on the ceiling. I left with smokey bacon smell permeated in my clothes and hair. Fixing the smoke issue along with a regard for people with allergies would make Retreat 5 stars. read more

If I had written this review a year ago, or perhaps 6 months ago, I would have given it at least a 4, not a 5. The reason for that is one of the demotions I'm sighting here. TURN DOWN THE DAMN MUSIC! The BASS is super loud. I really don't know how anyone talks to anyone there, much less gets anything done on their electronic devices. I'm so sick and tired of going to a restaurant and the music is so loud it gives you a headache. I encourage others to complain about this when ever you can. Now to the rest. My favorite food at Retreat is the basic egg sandwich. It is so simple but sooooooo delicious. That hasn't changed and I wish I could give more stars because of this treat. The other reason I had for going to Retreat is for their Beet Latte. It was sublime! I dreamed of that often and would make a special trip there just to get one of those. LOVE! When I walked in this last weekend I found that they opened up the back wall and had way more room. Which was good because this place had become popular and very crowded. The mural in the back was was better than the previous mural. Being an artist I really appreciated the style and colors, but wasn't really into the subject matter. They still have healthy options but when I ordered the Beet Latte, it was explained to me that there was a big change in the ingredients of the Beet Latte. They said if I didn't like the new version I could reorder something else. The good news is that the egg sandwich I ordered was still amazing but the NEW Beet Latte sucked big time. The server never came back to me to see if I liked the new version. I let it get cold while eating my egg sandwich in hopes that might improve the new flavor. It did not. I took some more sips but felt crest fallen that I would no longer experience such delight. With that in mind I will most likely not go back. I know I can make an egg sandwich just as good so why put up the overwhelming amount of hipsters in this place just to have that sandwich. I have visited this place on a weekend afternoon, the place was nice and well decorated and has great natural light . The coffee is very good in comparison to the last coffeehouse in that place, and They have verities of baked goods especially the scones were perfect! Evan though I really liked the place, I don't think I would come again because of the service. I asked the barista for the WiFi password, and when I told him that the password didn't work, he said that it should work and he walked away. I finally had to open a hot spot from my phone to my laptop just so I can have some internet which should be included in the service.At the end of the day, I would recommend going to that place if you don't care about the service. read more

I love Retreat! It is the perfect study or meet-up place with a great mix of real food plates and pastry/small items. I love how their food menu offers really tasty combinations of healthy foods. I have been known to make alterations to what I order -- as they phased out some menu items I really liked so I try to recreate them -- and everyone is always very nice and willing to do it for me. Got glutened, and they won't give me a refund! I used to like this place a lot, but I recently went here and ordered a gluten-free toast. I was given regular toast (w/ gluten), which I didn't notice until I had already returned home and had an allergic reaction. I sent a friendly e-mail to management and never heard back. On Monday, April 17, 2023 a little after 6 P.M. I was looking for a place for a light meal and an adult beverage while walking around the Green Lake neighborhood. I say Retreat. Although it wasn't busy, there were a few customers inside. it looked like it would be the place for me. I walked into the establishment and sat down at the bar. There were three employees behind the bar. One was waiting on a customer at the cash register, one was at a sink, and the third was just standing behind the bar talking with the others. I scanned the QR code on the bar to look at the menu. The three employees continued their conversation with each other as they walked back and forth behind the bar. I came to a decision about what I wanted to eat and drink then I waited. I sat at the bar waiting for 10 minutes, yet not one of the employees even acknowledged my presence in the establishment. There was no greeting; no one saying they would get my order in just a moment; no one telling me I need to order at the register; nothing. No acknowledgment of my presence whatsoever. Came here for coffee and brunch with a girlfriend earlier this month. I ordered the goat cheese toast and added a side of bacon. When my food arrived the bacon looked very underdone and just unappetizing. I asked if I could have my bacon cooked a little crispier and the waitress said absolutely, took my plate, and within a few minutes replaced it with a new plate of bacon crisped to perfection. And then she slipped me a $10 gift card and said "sorry for the trouble - come back and see us again, our treat." Not only is their coffee and food delicious but their care for their customers is top notch. I never anticipated getting a gift card, but it was such a nice touch, I felt compelled to share my experience on here.
