    Salmon Avocado Roll
    Debbie F.

Take out sushi! This spot is so cute! For a quicker way to satisfy a sushi craving, this is for sure a great option. If ya blink, you may miss it. Located right next to a small movie theater, and mostly recognized by the A-frame sign out front, is a walk up window to place your order. Food is made fresh while you wait. Took about 10 mins and my order was ready. Although 4th street can get quite busy, I was able to find parking right in front. Quality little place and prices are affordable.

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Very good quality sushi in an unassuming tiny storefront. While I do miss Hip Pea dearly, I must admit it's nice having a good casual sushi option on 4th St convenient to me. Too bad the two couldn't coexist. I guess Jounetsu Ramen further west on 4th does some rolls but I haven't tried them so can't speak for their quality. The hubby and I decided to get some dinner here on a weeknight and got: Ultimate Roll - basically an omakase roll. The chef asks what you like and assembles something. I told him I was totally open and to make whatever. He asked if I liked eel (I do), and he came up with a roll with an eel base topped with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, crunchy tempura bits, masago, and eel sauce, which I asked for light (I hate goopy rolls). I was very pleased with this roll--it had good quality fish as well as good sushi rice and was assembled with care. Veggie Roll - fresh avocado, cucumbers and carrots with the aforementioned good rice. Simple, but well done. These weren't cheap, but I'd say reasonable for the quality. I'm looking forward to trying more of their offerings soon, like their poke bowls! The hubby was hoping to try some of their other vegan sushi that looked interesting, but according to the chef they weren't doing very well so he's discontinued them--bummer! At least most of the standard vegetarian options are vegan anyway. As with Hip Pea, just the small outdoor tables if you want to eat there--not the best on cold days, so I imagine most people get stuff to go. The chef is very personable and really cares about the food and customer service. I wish him the best and hope this place will be able to stick around!

    HAWAIIAN ROLL

John makes one hell of a sushi roll & my favorite favorite favorite roll is the Hawaiian Roll. I highly recommend ordering it if you're here. Quality rolls & happy hour deals, add it to your bucketlist! Great energy! Outdoor dining area but it's cute & great for dates (hot tip for hot date: pair the meal with some wine from next door).

This is hands down one of my favorite sushi spots of all time. Super simple menu, super friendly staff, if you are looking for a legit sushi spot, look no further!

Got 6 rolls to eat at home and let me tell you it was 100/10 all of them were so good!! 100% recommend

We got 6 rolls to eat at home and we couldn't pick a favorite one because they were all so good. I will come back here every chance I can 100% recommend. I loved the details and presentation

Delicious. Affordable. Fresh. Made with love. I needed a snack while I waited for the movie to start next door. Have been wanting to try RetRoll for quite sometime. I ordered the spicy tuna wrap, it was cut into pieces like a sushi roll, it was perfect & so yummy! I will be back to order a feast! Nice person helping at the window, awesome chef creating magic.

The food was great! Service was outstanding and the prices are budget friendly, especially in the 2025 economy. Highly recommend a stop here if in Long Beach CA!

So glad to have a sushi spot on 4th street :) It's located next to the theatre & art du vin wine bar. I got the ultimate roll which is basically a roll they customize to your liking by asking what fish + sauces you like/don't like. I also got a spicy tuna roll which was tasty and classic. Everything was fresh & I waited about 10-15 minutes for everything to be ready. It's a walk up window so be prepared to eat it to-go! You can also get sake at Art du Vin next door to pair with your sushi.

CALIFORNIA ROLL, SEAWEED SALAD, CRAB SALAD

This is one of the best sushi spots in Long Beach. Amazing location near retro row and connected to the local movie theatre. The prices are a steal it was 12 bucks for all this high quality food! Please consider going here you will not regret it. It's so fresh and tasty.

I could tell they use a cookie butter flavored syrup rather than a natural cookie butter. The espresso shots tasted good, but it was overpowered by the syrup. My friend ordered the Banana Foam Latte. She also thought her drink was sweet. The banana foam tasted good, but it disappeared within 10 min. Pricing: Prices are more than average, but I'm not surprised considering they're located on a popular street.

I had definite favorites when I dinner-ed here - both of which were starters. The sea bass larb ($21) was a refreshing way to start the meal. The Chilean sea bass is served ceviche style with fresh lime juice, fish sauce, cilantro, green + red onions with rice paper crisps. There wasn't anything groundbreaking about this dish, but it was a very solid ceviche. We also tried the kao tuna na tung ($13) which was a first for me. Ground pork, shrimp, and aromatic spices are simmered in coconut milk and paired with shrimp cracker wafers. It's surprisingly light, but flavorful. For proteins, we shared a sausage platter (a little dry), pork belly ($16), and the crying tiger ($28). The one misgiving I have is the fact that all 3 are served with the same sauces which ultimately keep them tasting pretty similar. I think The Second Owl is a great place to take out of town guests or if you're entertaining a nice dinner. The menu offers classic Thai dishes alongside less common offerings which keeps the menu exciting.

Unfortunately, the experience fell far short of those expectations. To begin with the positives, the staff were warm, welcoming, and genuinely attentive throughout our visit. The outdoor patio on Second Street also provides a pleasant atmosphere and remains one of the restaurant's strongest features. Regrettably, the food was consistently disappointing. The gyro was dry and appeared as though it had been sitting for some time before being served. The pita was noticeably soggy, undersized, and lacked the texture and freshness one would expect. The accompanying salad consisted of low-quality greens that did not appear fresh, and it was served with what tasted like bottled dressing rather than a house-made vinaigrette. Having considerable familiarity with food preparation and dressings, the difference was immediately apparent. The calamari was acceptable but entirely unremarkable, and at $17 it did not justify its price. We also ordered a gyro salad, which suffered from the same issues as the sandwich: dry meat, uninspired presentation, and ingredients that lacked freshness. Ironically, the French fries were the most enjoyable item we received--competent, but hardly enough to elevate the overall meal. What made the experience particularly disappointing was not simply the quality of the food, but the imbalance between quality and price. I have no objection to paying premium prices when they are matched by premium ingredients, careful preparation, and attention to detail. In this case, however, the value proposition simply was not there. Based on this visit, I cannot recommend George's Greek Cafe. While the hospitality deserves recognition, the kitchen did not deliver a meal that reflected either the restaurant's reputation or its pricing. I sincerely hope management reexamines its commitment to ingredient quality, consistency, and execution, because the restaurant has the potential to offer a much better dining experience than what we encountered.

When I walked in it was pretty quiet, but it was also right before dinner time. The place feels more like a casual deli spot -- you order at the counter and there are a few tables if you want to sit and eat. The space looked clean and simple, nothing fancy but comfortable enough. The employee working there was very friendly. He came out from the back, answered my questions, and recommended the chicken pesto panini, saying it's their most popular item. I also added a Caesar salad for $2.99, which I thought was a fair price, and decided to try the bread pudding as well. The panini itself was pretty good. The bread was nicely toasted, the cheese was melted well, and the pesto had good flavor. The only downside for me was the chicken -- it seemed like it might have been boiled and then mixed with pesto. It was a bit tougher than I would have liked. The Caesar salad was decent for the price. Unfortunately, the bread pudding didn't work for me. It was very dense and almost brick-like. Overall, the value is there and the staff was very nice. For me personally, the food felt a bit average. I tend to prefer paying a little more for higher quality rather than saving a few dollars on something that doesn't quite hit the mark. Because of that, I probably wouldn't go back, but others might appreciate the price point and friendly service. Food 3 stars. Staff 5 average 4
