Rex is my favorite coffee shop in the city. It's got everything I could ask for in a coffee shop: - Great and friendly baristas - They make my favorite cortados in the city. Counter culture beans, like everyone else mentions. - Their pastries are delicious. I get the blueberry muffins often, and it's loaded with them. - Wi-fi - The street-facing wall is a big floor-to-ceiling window. It's great for when you want to take a rest from whatever you're doing and just gaze out. - The crowd is the local neighborhood. It's not too bustly in here, but also rarely empty. I've been to so many coffee shops in the city but like so few as much as Rex. I'm moving from the neighborhood soon, and being far from Rex is one of my biggest misgivings about moving. read more

I ordered a latte. It was beautiful with nice latte art, but the taste was off. I felt it was super strong with burnt taste. I added some milk but it didn't help much since the burnt aftertaste was still there. I wouldn't go back since there are much better coffee houses around. read more

Noticed Rex on my walk to work (when the weather's nice) and decided to stop in this morning. While the baked goods were freshly made and looked great, sadly I only got the coffee (black, so you can taste if it's good or bad easily) but it was really tasty and the staff here was friendly - coffee was not acidic at all, and while that's partially due to well roasted beans, the brewing was good also. The cashier was the rudest I've encountered in America. I ordered 2 sandwiches to go, paid with credit card on their iPad but was greeted with a screen asking me how much I wanted to tip. As I always prefer to leave cash tips, I chose 'no tip' on the screen. This led to the cashier quipping to his colleague the question should be "Am I European? Yes or no". Wow - just because I have an accent doesn't mean I'm European. And how presumptuous that I wasn't going to leave a tip. Truly amazed me. Anyway, the place scores 2 stars for their sandwiches which were truly delicious. Had this place bookmarked for quite some time, finally had a chance to swing on by this morning and I'm so glad I did. Had the almond latte and breakfast sandwich with bacon, egg, and avocado. The latte was perfectly creamy without the burnt aftertaste. The breakfast sandwich... What can I say, nothing makes me happier than an egg sandwich but when you have the option to throw avocado on there, mega yums! Saw the reviews and thought I grab a cup. I ordered 2 extra hot lattes, each costing $5. Their standard size is a 10oz. For $4.50, so they charged an extra $.50 to upgrade to a 12oz. Took a sip of my latte and it was lukewarm, so I told her that so that she can make the 2nd one extra hot and she said, "Did you get past the foam". Rude!!! I was literally able to stick a straw and sip the coffee like it was a soft drink. The coffee was beyond warm. Waste of money. read more

Went here after getting a workout at the row house. Small place but perfect for grabbing a quick coffee. Large iced coffee was about 3.50 which is cheaper than the Starbucks across the street. I'm from Philly, but the portion of the drink I got was smaller than what I am used to at a typical boutique coffee shop, and not to mention at a greater price. An adorable coffee shop in an area that really doesn't have very many. Simple but good, Rex is a great spot to pop in for an iced coffee or to sit and and read (IF you're lucky enough to score a seat). Be warned though, limited seating makes this a risky choice for coffee dates/meetings. One of my favorite coffee joints in the City. The lamb sandwich special is absolutely delectable - tender, delicious meat. My friend had the cauliflower hummus sandwich which looked delicious. The cuban sandwich is also a great staple, and it comes with a pickle (which is left out when you get it to-go). Croissants are great, too. Great espresso and coffee. Hard to grab a seat if you come with a group of people, but the employee there, without our asking, took in the outside bench so I wouldn't have to share a seat with my friend. Rex is not king. While the place looks promising, the coffee (a latte) packed NO punch at all. I felt like I had been slipped a decaf with lots of frothy milk. Rex is the type of coffee shop I wish was always within walking distance. Having an unassuming and low-key atmosphere, the shop offers a reliably consistent and excellent brew (counter culture beans). If they were located in a more convenient location, the lines might run out the door. Nonetheless, they are a routine stop on my weekend mornings and continue to please. The staff is friendly and helpful, adding to the experience. Rex's baked goods are fresh and tasty(especially the blueberry muffin!) along with quality sandwiches designed to appease a larger appetite. If you plan on staying at their two communal tables to chat or get some work done, a treat with your coffee is a great pairing. More of a grab-n-go in my opinion than a sit-down shop given the limited seating, but always worth a visit. read more

I am SO sad to have to write this. I have been coming in quite regularly for the past few weeks and have been satisfied with the quality of the coffee, tea, baked goods, and sandwich specials. However, I recently ordered a gravalox sandwich that is on the menu (not a daily special) and it was very obviously made AT LEAST one day ago. The spread (cream cheese?) was dried out, the bread was stale, the salmon hanging over the edge of the sandwich was dried out, and the cucumbers were translucent. I found this very disappointing. I hope the owner ceases pre-making the sandwiches, because I'm sure other customers, like myself, would prefer to wait a few extra minutes for a fresh sandwich, than be unsatisfied with a $7 sandwich that is clearly old. read more

I was planning to enjoy the coffee there, but the place is small and have only a few tables that occupied by folks camping with laptops. So I have no choice but to take my coffee to go.
