On my continuing quest to get fat while supporting my local mom and pops restaurants, I stumbled upon Rey's Little Kitchen and its freaken awesomeness which quickly became the Sunday spot for my sister and I. This place is so inauspicious you would never know it was here unless you Yelped it. Located behind some huge antique shop (King Arthurs? Sir Arthurs? I dunno...) from the outside you wouldn't know what this place was. Be warned: Parking can be a biatch at the lot but there is plenty of street so fear not! I literally roll out of bed and come here for breakfast, no judgement. Ok so maybe people judge me but ask me if I care? Go on, I'll wait. The first time I came here I ordered the chorizo con huevos (egg) and it was delicious! It comes with beans and potatoes and your choice of flour or corn tortillas. My sister got the breakfast burrito which is HUGE. Their food is made to order and it tastes homemade which I LOVE when it comes to my breakfast. They also serve you chips and salsa and their salsa is BOMB. That's how you know the rest of the food is going to be bomb too. Second time I came here I had the chilaquiles and my sister the pancakes with strawberries. Again, home run! I've have yet to be disappointed when I come here. Inside is pretty spacious, plenty of seating and it's divided into three sections. Honestly though, it feels like you are at your Tia Pancha's house and she is spoiling you with her awesome food...at least that's the vibe I get when I am there. There are many regulars (I see you!) so it's one of those types of places where you keep coming back. It tends to get packed on Sunday's but service is great, my coffee mug stays full and the food is mighty tasty. First time trying to eat here and after a short wait of about 10 minutes my boyfriend and I were seated. We ordered rather quickly and at present have been waiting 40 minutes for our food. A waitress approached us and told us we would have to wait another 15 minutes to receive our food and if we wanted to leave, we could. Not exactly a solution and only served to make me more annoyed. I ordered coffee and it was not ever refilled until I made a gesture that my cup was empty (after 40 minutes). The chips that come to the table taste like they are from a bag rather than the delicious oily fresh cooked kind. The salsa was dismal. After requesting we receive our pancakes separately (I.e. Immediately) they were just OK. We pretty much swallowed them from hunger. The second I had the last bite in my mouth a server requested to take our syrup away. The pancakes had an aftertaste of other food on the grill... Sigh. This place has a B rating which already gives me the chills, but the poor service and the inability for this place to handle large parties (their reasoning for long wait time and poor service) is not forgivable if the food is also bad. The coffee tasted burnt/bitter and water-down at the same time. The only redeeming quality about this place is the cheap prices. I can see how this is an easy neighborhood spot for people to eat a meal for about $5 or so. Oh to top it off they turn their phones off when it's busy. We didn't know that until we arrived and asked. But heads up, if their phone line is disconnected you will receive poor service and cold food. At least you won't have to pay very much for it. Currently at 60 minutes and just barely received our food. We asked for the eggs OVER MEDIUM, and they arrived scrambled, we asked for hash browns and got home style potatoes instead. read more

I really enjoyed my breakfast I ordered the stuffed French toast with eggs and bacon I ordered egg whites & I also ordered fideo to Go for MY Baby. The French toast was delicious it was perfectly cooked ...crispy on the outside soft on the inside and the strawberry cream cheese in the middle was perfect it wasn't overly sweet or drowning in cream cheese and the bacon was delicious perfectly cooked not overcooked or undercooked and the eggs were good (I do wish they had an organic egg option) I think the coffee was "OK" but I really liked that they had flavored creamers. My friend ordered a chorizo burrito the chorizo was very yummy but very greasy. I mean dripping all over her hand greasy. My other friend ordered the Machaca burrito and he seemed to really enjoy it. We all enjoyed the free chips and salsa that came before the meal. The soup that I ordered for baby was good. But I had been told the chicken would be shredded and it wasn't it came in chunks which my baby couldn't really eat so I ate them ... However shredded chicken would be good and easier to swallow for children but it definitely did not take away from the flavor. Overall four stars I would've given five stars but I thought the coffee could be a little better for a restaurant that's known for serving breakfast all day maybe I'm just being a coffee snob I hope not but even Ihop has better coffee. Pretty good place. Came here last sunday at 9am in the morning. Wife had the french toast and i had the chicken fried steak and eggs. Food was served up pretty quick and hot. The tortillas were stale, the French toast and pancakes had a weird taste and even the coffee had a weird taste, the beans and potatoes were old and hard. Tried this place out for the first time this weekend, because it had such great reviews. I got the chicken fried steak breakfast. Flavor wasn't bad, eggs were cooked perfectly, potatoes were a little cold and under done, and the gravy well... It wasn't anything great. Not all that bad for the price though. The staff was really friendly including our waiter, but in the hour we were there he only came to our table twice, and it wasn't even that busy. Sadly, I know one of the previous cooks that use to work here and the food isn't made fresh. He told me how the owner has a cook come in early in the morning, cook a bunch of food, put it in containers in the fridge and that's it. So when a customer orders something, they heat it back up til they've sold it all. I don't like that. They've had a few B ratings overall in the past from the health department. I've eaten here about 5 times*?* within 2 years and honestly twice I got really sick after eating here so I did my research and it turns out they had received a B rating for one reason that they didn't have a proper food handling temperatures. Makes sense why I fell ill less than 10 minutes after eating some fajitas here. That's on just one occasion. My family's stomachs weren't feeling so great either but I got the worst of it. The restaurant feels homey with plenty of people of all ages dining. The wait staff was uniformly courteous and checked on us regularly. However, the food took a long time to come out. When it did come out, it was lukewarm and bland. This was unfortunate since it seemed that the wait staff was truly trying to make our experience a pleasant one. Also, the prices for breakfast were right around the $10 mark, which is very reasonable if the food were any good. I would not return to Rey's and that is a shame. read more

Found a gem in Whittier. What a great spot for some amazing huevos rancheros. My wife had chicharrones and eggs which were also amazing.
