*This review is specifically based off an event I attended here.* I recently visited for a baby shower, and it was my first visit. Since I don't often travel to this area. RFD is located in the cutest town with lots of old charm, and I learned there are several historic buildings nearby. I actually didn't realize this place was a restaurant until after we left! For the event, they brought in their own food and completely rearranged all the tables and chairs in the main dining room, so I genuinely thought it was just an awesome event hall. RFD is an interesting stop. First, I have to say that I love the setting. The old post office is really charming and just has so much character. If nothing else, it's worth stopping in to soak in all the old timey charm and enjoy a piece of Hoosier history. The restaurant function of the space I was a little more iffy on. In concept, I think it's really fun. The antique post office doesn't lend itself to fine dining. And neither did the menu or the staff. But the idea of eating in this unique space is fun. The food, staff, and pricing were all fairly problematic. We got what at best was Olive Garden/Applebees fare at St. Elmo's prices. I say "at best" because I found all the dishes I tried inedible or close to it. I had a Caesar salad, deviled eggs, and the diablo chicken pasta. First, surprisingly, the diablo chicken pasta was spicy! It's rare in Southern Indiana for something labeled spicy to live up to the reputation. But this was Thai-food levels of spicy. Much spicier than Nashville Hot Chicken. This was bring you to Jesus levels of hot sauce. There wasn't much of any chicken in it. So it was just noodles and some kind of sauce that puts Louisiana Hot Sauce to shame. There was a little spattering of parm and some parsley for looks on top. I wasn't offered any additional parm. Had I been prepped for Thai/Indian/Asian levels of spice, I might have been happy with it. But I found it inedible as there was no flavor other than "Ouch!" The caesar salad had no anchovy taste to it, and also lacked any parm. There wasn't even decorative parm. That was weird. It was just romaine lettuce and a watery, Caesar dressing colored mayo sauce with a few croutons. It was at least edible. The deviled eggs were sweeter than skittles. And instead of paprika, they had some type of bbq spice rub liberally sprinkled over them. My mouth wasn't prepared for that and I was so shocked by the flavor that the other people laughed at the unintentional face I made. My son didn't finish his chicken parm either. So I don't think I just lucked out with the wrong choices. My other kid got a steak, and he seemed happy with hit. That might be the one thing to stick to on the menu if you're there. The staff were OK-ish. They had a strange air of being off-put by us, but I'm not sure why. We were friendly, tipped well, and were decently dressed, etc. The manager or owner did come out and ask about the deviled eggs as the eggs went uneaten. I had to admit they weren't to my taste, but I was nice about it. Definitely not somewhere I would try again. Was excited to try a different place tonight. I have to say, I don't know what everyone else saw in this place. It was horrible. The food tastes warmed up. The seafood pasta had no sauce and tasted like salmon only. The cheeseburger was ok but so tiny. If you are going off of other pictures of menus. Should call and ask. None of what was on everyone else's reviews was on the menu. Boring food and boring place. Told us on phone have to make reservations. Showed up and the place was sooooo dead. We visited RFD with friends last night and had an excellent meal. The space is an old Postal office- very unique, trendy and interesting! It's not overly fancy of a dining atmosphere, but the quality of food was top notch. Our server was friendly and prompt. We ordered calamari and deviled eggs for an appetizer- I recommend the calamari! The menu changes frequently, our friends said. My salmon dish was beautifully seared with a crisp edge. The horseradish potatoes had so much flavor! Portions are appropriate - everyone at our table finished their plate and we split a dessert. Prices were maybe $2-4 more than I expected but the taste and presentation made it worth it. Plenty of street and lot parking and located in a great walkable area of downtown. I would recommend for lunch and some window shopping after, or a trendy rehearsal dinner. First dates would be memorable here. Good for families though the menu was not extensive so kids might not find many options. We will be back! read more

Had a wonderful dinner at the RFD in Franklin. Cool place, former post office, they kept a lot of the decor. It was Christmas time, so it was nice seeing their decorations. I ordered the pork chop, it was amazing! My wife ordered the chicken parm tortellini, it was good too. I also had the soup of the day, crab and tomato... yummy!! We even splurged for a carrot cake for dessert. My wife said that was the best! Overall had a lovely evening meal, sure it's expensive, just be prepared for it. We will be back! read more

Recommended by Kim from the Ashley-Drake Inn. Beautiful building! We got to eat in the vault which was very quaint and private. Enjoyed our calamari appetizer and split a delicious wedge salad. For our main course, we split the pork chop with apple chutney and horseradish mashed potatoes. The pork chop was perfectly done and the horseradish mashed potatoes divine! I don't get to say this often, but RFD is really unlike anywhere else I've eaten. The converted post office offers such a cool, unique vibe--sometimes it's just weird, but overall it's charming. Service was a little slow when we went, but I think that was largely affected by staffing -- stuff every restaurant is dealing with. Our service was attentive as she could be, but clearly overwhelmed by the amount of guests she was responsible for - to no fault of her own. The whole menu is appealing, but what they don't tell you on the menu is that there's always a special burger option - and the meat is mixed with prime rib. I was only told this information after getting my heart set on the salmon (and trying to make a somewhat healthier choice) so I passed this time, but I know I need to give it a shot next time. And there most certainly will be a next time - great local find. read more

My wife learned of this through a friend's social media post. Weekday lunch, so wasn't busy at all. Very nice restoration of the old post office, PO Boxes, vault, post master's vault, and Big Band music playing. We had a nice Spanish moscato, shrimp cocktail (my wife did feel the shrimp were a little raw---I like it). She had a wonderful chicken parmesan and I had the seafood pasta. This place sucked. Sorry. 35 min wait for a hamburger. When it arrived it was so crispy I wouldn't give to my dog. No manager on site. The poor waitress comp the bill 50% First of all this is not a troll. I have my copy of our receipt. Second you did not have a manager on duty. We were informed by two different waitresses that there was no manager and that they couldn't do much to help as they had no clearance. The most unpleasant dinner experience I've ever had. Dinner reservations at 7pm & didn't get food until after closing time at 9:30. Poor service, subpar food, and laughable portion sizes for the amount you pay. ("The seafood pasta salad comes with 3 shrimp." A server so kindly corrected us.) I have no idea how this place stays in business. It's easily noticeable that for the amount of bad reviews this place has that they don't care about the business anymore. I was really excited to try this place. My boyfriend had picked it out and since we only see each other once a week i was looking forward to trying somewhere new. I drove down from Westfield and made my way to Franklin. Walked in and were told there was no outdoor seating even though i saw plenty of open tables outside. We were sat inside and noticed the menu had changed quite a bit from the one posted online. Understandable since it's a new place even though the prices went up on almost every item. The place was very loud, distracting even. Perhaps it's the high ceilings or the table of 10 men we were sat next to even when there were other open more private tables available. We waiting for someone, anyone to greet us, offer us water. We decided on what drinks, starters, and entrees we wanted. Then kept waiting, and waiting while other tables were offered water and food orders were taken. 4 other tables had given there order and had drinks and we had not yet been greeted. We waited 15+ minutes and due to a movie we were seeing in an hour we decided to leave without anyone ever speaking to us. I have never left a one start review or felt the need to leave and establishment due to service, but i feel this is deserved. Hope this was the first and only terrible experience you have. Having dined at over 1000 food and beverage places in Central Indiana, I was thrilled to finally get a chance to participate in a "soft opening" of RFD Franklin the week prior to their official opening. As a bit of a history buff, I've been following the transformation of this historic building (built 1936) that has had several functions in the past. Glad to see how much love and attention went into preserving what they could and adding complementary touches to bring modern convenience to the place. Because it was a soft opening, I'll share with you what I caught them doing right. There are quite a few of those. I shared with the owners my honest opinions of what I would like to see changed or improved. Hopefully, my feedback will help them dial in their dining experience presentation as they go live. Although the restaurant only has a small private parking area, there is a city lot with many spaces that aren't reserved (though I wonder if the reserved ones are available after business hours. That would be helpful!) There is also free street parking in the area too. Though the building faces north, I chose to enter from the east side where a nice sized patio sits. At the time of my visit, there wasn't any outdoor seating, but it does have potential for that. I also noticed a ramp to assist physically challenged people make it from the parking lot up to the east side entrance. At first, you will enter a beautiful lobby filled with tile that comes up from the floor onto the walls like a wainscoting. The interior is a buttery yellow and there is rich dark wood trim along with a freestanding booth near the hostess counter. Once checked in, the staff will escort you into the spacious dining room with 14' ceilings and more dark wood at the bar and the wall of postal boxes that has the kitchen behind it. The walls are a mint green above the wood and the ceiling has two open areas that rise up to windows that can be opened for additional ventilation. The flooring is hardwood and the chairs are aluminum with coasters that make it easy to scoot forward and back. There are a variety of tables, some small and square, others larger and round. There is also a vault room that can be reserved for a small dining party and another room for a somewhat larger group. Throughout the evening, my service was excellent! Everyone was upbeat and if I had a question, they found answers. Although a water container was available on my table, I didn't even have to fill my glass. The cocktail I tried was tasty and when I had a question, the bartender came over and answered my questions. The owners stopped by and we discussed the history of the building and the extra details they've added. I can't say enough about how well everyone listened and was upbeat about the place. They are still tweaking their menu, so let me tell you what I was impressed with so far. The Pan Seared Blue Crab Cakes were excellent! Large chunks of crab meat with just enough sear to bring out more flavor, topped with shaved celery and a wedge of lemon. The sauce they had on the side was creamy and rich and paired extremely well. May be my favorite thing I had all night. For my entree, I got 6 oz filet WITH a baked potato for only $19! Wow! A Steak house would charge double for that. They have some toppings for those interested in them, but I went with the standard dark sear with a medium rare interior. The baked potato had a salted (large sea salt crystals) skin which is great for those of us who eat the whole potato. A flavored butter and sour cream were available. The potato was normal person size, not one of those monsters that only the most hearty eaters can manage. Good choices. I would like to see them tinker with the seasoning of the steak just a bit more. It wasn't my absolute favorite, but it was still quite good. I finished off with a Vanilla Creme Brulee that had berries on the side. The brulee had a crisp crackling top that makes the dessert special (otherwise it's just pudding!) There was a slight hint of char to the top, but that should get better with experience and the berries blended with the char taste so that it was minimal. Great experience for me in general and I will definitely be bringing my wife and friends with me once they open. Went last night with a party of ten. The place was not busy. Unfortunately, the wait staff was overwhelmed, rude, and not timely in serving the customer. Our waitress argued with my wife about her salad lacking dressing and the in a sharp tone, said "blame it on the cook." My swordfish, although a nicely sized portion was not cooked properly. The garlic mashed lacked flavor. Our appetizers were good, my wife's dinner was good as many in our party saidthey also enjoyed their main course. It could be a nice place, but much work would be needed with both the kitchen and wait staff to make us want to return. Too bad for downtown Franklin! read more

We heard about RFD Franklin from a friend and decided to head in at 4 p.m. for an early dinner. Took a moment to take the place in, which I must say, is very neat. Love that they left the old mailboxes and the safe and we thought the rolling desk/dining chairs were very cool (at least until you've had a few drinks)! For our appetizer, we ordered the Pan Seared Blue Crab Cakes ($13), they were very good, loved the Caper Remoulade. For the main course I ordered the Pan Seared Scallops ($22), the better half and DD1 had the Classico Marinara ($13). The scallops were served over roasted potatoes, a bit like home fries if you will. Personally I would have liked to have seen some more green on the plate, perhaps a small spring mix, cucumber or seaweed salad to round it out but the scallops were cooked to perfection, tender and very tasty. The Classico Marinara on the otherhand, at $13, just didn't do it for me. It certainly did not have enough personality to make it stand out as a menu staple, nor do I think it garnered the $13 price tag, but the better half and DD1 seemed to enjoy it. My only real complaint (and the reason for only 4 stars) was with our server. She made our dinner feel hurried. She made little eye contact, limited conversation and she dashed to and from our table as if she were extremely busy. There were a total of three couples by the time we left and there was another server, so we know she wasn't busy serving customers. I believe in the restaurant industry, service is a large part of the dining experience, in a more upscale dining establishment with such a refined menu with premium prices, the service should reflect the same. I believe RFD will do very well with a few adjustments and once they become a bit more established. I hope they can last long enough to develop a foothold. We will be back! read more

My husband and I tried RFD after seeing all the great Yelp reviews and it did NOT disappoint. We started with splitting a wedge salad and the complimentary bread and butter. Highly recommend the Chicken Parmesan, which comes with two huge chicken fillets and veggies. They have beef and fish specials that change so we were able to try the swordfish with lemon risotto and asparagus and it was nothing short of amazing. Ended the night with a slice of cheesecake to go. We can't wait to go back, especially to see our favorite waitress JoEllen. read more

Really wanted to like this place, as it got good recommendations from friends and it's located minutes from our house. However, not sure I will go back. On the plus side: service was attentive and friendly; ambiance was interesting, being in an old post office. However, the food was slightly disappointing, especially for the price. Our calamari starter was chewy and not well seasoned (though the batter on it was light and not greasy). For the mains, I ordered the scallops, and my husband ordered the ribeye steak. My scallops were way over-seared (one looked completely black!) and slightly overcooked. I did enjoy the wilted spinach, pancetta, and asparagus accompaniment, as well as the sauce plated with the scallops. Just wish the scallops were cooked properly! My husband's steak was cooked perfectly but tasted completely bland, absolutely no seasoning on it. Not even salt and pepper! His horseradish mash side was also bland, not seasoned and barely any horseradish taste. Definitely not worth the $32 price tag. After reading other reviews, it seems there may be an issue with consistency in cook and taste. Also wondering why they're still serving the July menu when it's October. Not a seasonal menu as advertised. Overall a mildly disappointing experience. For this price point, there are better options. read more

So we called ahead to see if they took reservations, we were told that they do not take reservations on Saturday and Sunday. So we drove to Franklin and when we checked into the hostess desk, she asked for our reservation. Really???? So in understanding her explanation as to why she ask that, for which it sounded like the impeachment hearings we gave out name for a party of three. She was about spot on with 1 hour wait. Dinner was so so. I can't say it is something I will write home about. Our waitress was prompt to ask for drink order but slow to bring. By the looks they are under staffed on the floor. We are not a drinking group so ice teas around. So one of us had Shrimp Penne, comments from it was the pasta was dry or overcooked but still tasted good. Another was the pork tenderlion and from his call of it the vegetables which was a grilled brussel sprout medley was way over salted to bring any flavor to it. Pork tenderloin was tasty and good. Ribeye was cooked per request of medium rare but no blue cheese crumbles were on top. We had to ask for them and they were brought out in a metal cup. The green beans were also overly salted with a season salt. Twice baked potatoe was good. Atmosphere was very loud but that is due to design of an old Post office as it is hard panned ceiling and walls. Decor was nice. We discussed amoung ourselves and we won't come back. We stopped by Franklin to visit some family. We chose this restaurant based on the yelp ranking. Excellent choice! Very interesting atmosphere, esp for those that remember that being the old post office. We had the calamari (delicious dip), fish sandwich, shrimp scampi, and brownie dessert. Horrible first visit, I've been in the foodservice business for 40 years. I've only responded twice with negative comments. Everything was horrible, I got stuffed salmon with shrimp (anything but) for $27 A stuffed fish dish has a butterflied filet with some other meat (crab, lobster, shrimp etc..) I got an overcooked filet with a thin smear of a shrimp paste on top (not stuffed) I mean thin. I got a tasty cream spinach & artichoke side that came cold. Also a side of steamed vegetables were diced tiny and about a tablespoons worth. They had bread, we asked our server for some, she said soon as it's done (she never brought) She also never checked on us, we would have to interrupt a server near us for water refills. My wife and I dislike having to give poor reviews, especially to businesses in our own hometown, but I'm afraid we probably won't be returning to RFD Franklin after our latest episode. We've dealt with spotty/insufficient service each of the 5 times we've eaten here over the last few years, but we always overlooked it due to the food being pretty good and trying to promote the one "upper-scale" dining establishment in town. My wife and I arrived at about 6:30 on Friday, 10/14. When we walked in, there were 9 people waiting in the lobby. After about 5 minutes, one of the people waiting stuck his head into the restaurant to ask if anyone was working the host/hostess desk. He was told by a server that the hostess called off for the night and that she'd be there in a minute. She came in a couple minutes later. Only one couple had reservations; the rest of us were walk-ins. Another lady came out to help seat us all. The restaurant was only about 1/3-1/2 full when all of us were seated. Our server, a very nice young lady, whom we found out later was only on her third day working there, soon took our drink and appetizer order. After about 10 minutes I flagged our server down to ask if there was anyone making our drinks, since I hadn't seen anyone at the bar since we came in. She said there was no bartender working, but "one of the other ladies knew how to make drinks." About 10 minutes later we received our drinks, along with our deviled egg appetizer. This appetizer, which we've had several times before here, is very good. Be aware that their menu is very limited. My wife opted for the seafood pasta (no explanation on the menu of what seafood was in it) and I chose the chicken parmesan. While waiting for our meal we noticed that there were only 3 servers working, as well as the owner walking around. We also noticed several times that people were waiting quite a while in the lobby for someone to acknowledge their existence. Three different times we had servers come to our table with food that was actually someone else's food. About 35-40 minutes after ordering our entree's, they arrived. One look at my wife's seafood pasta and we were dumbfounded...see attached photo! One very small piece of salmon, 2 little shrimp and two little clumps of broccoli with pasta...for $28! We thought they messed-up and gave us the same thing listed under the Lunch Only part of the menu! We asked the owner to come over. Her first words were "what did we do wrong?" My wife asked her if this was actually the dinner portion and how was this $28? She just said she'd get some more salmon...nothing else...and walked away. My wife asked our server if she could also get some more broccoli. The server was very apologetic and said she was surprised by the small portion (this is where she said she'd only been there 3 days). After about 10 minutes, the owner appeared with another small amount of salmon and a few more florets or broccoli. She said "here you go", no I'm sorry or anything. My chicken parmesan was pretty good; nothing fantastic, but good...with two pieces of chicken, pasta and zucchini & yellow squash. While eating we also heard a server tell another table that they got the last chicken parmesan...at 7:30 on a Friday evening and it not being busy?! Needless to say we didn't bother getting a 2nd drink or any dessert. With a 20% tip (only due to our server being so nice and apologetic and working hard) our bill was $100 ($99.79 actually). It pains me to say this, but based on their limited menu choices, extremely small portions, and lack of hiring enough personnel, they are way overpriced. From now on, if we're looking for a nice dinner out and we don't want to travel to Indy, we'll be returning to Revery in Greenwood and Our Table in Bargersville. RFD Franklin - This is the dinner portion of the "seafood" pasta entree...where's the seafood?! - Steakhouses Near Me - Franklin, Indiana

My husband and I had reservations here for our anniversary. He booked the reservation about a month ago and made it for 7:00 pm. When he called to confirm the time today, the hostess said she had us down - for 4:00 pm. Odd, but they corrected it and put us down for 7:30. When we arrived, we waited 5-ish minutes for someone to set the table with silverware and water glasses (although there were plenty of empty tables). Right away, the noise of the dining area hit us both - Everything echoes loudly and keeps it from feeling intimate or romantic, which of course we wanted for our anniversary. It didn't have a "fine dining" feel to it at all. Appetizer: The fried calamari was fairly good, but the pieces were cooked unevenly. Some were perfect, some too crispy, some soggy and underdone. The dipping sauce was tasty. Main courses: My salmon was overcooked and dry. The risotto was swimming in butter and more like a soup. The asparagus pieces (which should've been whole stalks, according to the menu) were good, but I had a few tough pieces in there. My husband's tortelloni with beef tips had a tasty sauce, but the beef tips were also overcooked. Drinks: Our beers sat at the bar for several minutes the first round before our waiter brought them to us. The second round, we went to the bar and got them ourselves so they wouldn't get warm. Two thumbs down on that. Overall, we are sadly disappointed with our experience at RFD Franklin. We looked forward to a fine dining choice in town, but it looks like we'll keep going out of town for an upscale restaurant experience. read more

This was our second visit. Glad they survived Covid. Post office has been beautifully restored. Hostess and wait staff are very pleasant. The menu is not extensive but there's a very nice selection of beef, pork, chicken and seafood options. If you haven't tried I recommend that you do. read more

Though I would start reviewing some locations and started with the new RFD Franklin located in a converted postal office. The inside is very appealing with retained features of the post office making the visuals appealing. The appetizers were delicious as were the cocktails and desserts. Their house cocktails were unique and delicious and it will be very cool once the bar is open after covid. The vibe was a little off but I think it was do to spacing for Covid- they were taking social distance and precautions very seriously. The only negative was the steak that was very underwhelming. I believe it was under-seasoned versus quality of cut but hard to tell. There were 2 of us who had steak / neither enjoyed. The eggplant was apparently very good as were the sides. We will try again in the future and see if they can get the last star. I was torn between a 3 and 4 star review this time but only being open a few months will give them a chance to fine tune their dishes . read more

I really wanted to love this place, but it was just ok. The outdoor patio was great! The service was very good but the food was just not worth the price. I got the salmon with risotto. The risotto was very good but the salmon was not impressive at all, I have had better salmon at chain restaurants. My husband got the filet and it was horrible. Very dry and tasteless. Never disappointed with the special! The halibut was my favorite dish yet! Try the crab cakes, they are delicious!!

Love this new restaurant in Franklin in the old post office. The owner was quick to greet us and explained the history of the building and provided recommendations on the menu. We had crab cakes as an appetizer, hubby had a burger and fries and I had the salmon. Everything was delicious and the service was great too. We will definitely be back! read more
