Food was ok, but worst service ever. And when the check was given to us, it was a hand written check (they don't have a pos system) with just totals on it. Before my husband gave her a CC, I looked the check over, the amounts on the items didn't equal up to the total. We asked the server about it and with an attitude told us the gratuity is added on checks on parties over 6ppl. I don't mind that it's added, but write that on the check, don't hoed it on hopes of getting double tipped. And then give me attitude because I asked?!? read more

Tampiquena is a good yardstick for measuring a Mexican restaurant. On one hand, one may ascertain the quality of the meat and its preparation with the skirt steak, and on the other, sample a staple of the cuisine, a cheese enchilada. Angel's succeeded on both counts. What sets them apart is the quality of the service. Memo waited on me with an attention and interest that was earnest and sincere. His partner on the floor was no slouch either. And el patron hailed me with a hearty farewell as I exited. Even if it is not, this restaurant has the warmth of a classic family operation. We used Angel's for catering for a PTA event. The prices were reasonable ($10 a person for taco bar w/ three options!) and everyone raved about the food! So delish! I trekked my husband and kids here on a Saturday morning on the advice of fellow yelpers who gave this place rave reviews. We don't eat out often, trying to conserve the oh-so-rare expendable dollars and can say with confidence this place was worth every penny. The drive down Ashland from the northside was quick and easy, parking right in front, and every part of the meal was awesome. We each ordered something different so we could sample and share, and the steaks, burgers, eggs, pancakes and everything in between were so good - hot, well-seasoned and prepared with attention. If the service was a little awkward it's because it was real and personal and kind of homey - like your sister or your cousin getting you another glass of water - I loved it! So happy I finally found a Latin American brunch spot. They have a brunch buffet on Sundays with many different varieties and two eggs any way you like them. You can also order breakfast, lunch, or dinner a la carte as well. Service was great and food at the buffet was great. WOW! This place is terrible! The good: outdoor patio and reasonable prices. The bad: greasy, poor quality food, carelessly prepared, mediocre service, and frigid cold coffee. Truly the worst breakfast I could imagine. A few of us got the breakfast buffet, which consisted of a greasy/dry french toast, dry pancakes, and bunch of greasy meaty mexican breakfast dishes. We also got eggs benedict with it. The eggs benedict came with scrambled up egg whites on top rather than a poached egg. What's up with that???? No yolk at all. Very strange and unappetizing. It was also only 1/2 of a benedict. Then the coffee. I literally got a not even luke warm cup of coffee put in front of me. What kind of restaurant cares so little about the quality of their food that they don't notice the are serving COLD (and I mean COLD) coffee? I will admit, the food that did not come off the buffet menu looked much better. But at any rate I would NEVER come back to this place. These reviews are bogus and this place blows. read more

Angel's = Delicious! Have been to Angel's twice now (three times for my husband) and we just found out about them 6 weeks ago. All the staff is very friendly. The food is delicious. My personal favorite is the breakfast buffet. They have a great mix of traditional Mexican fare - empanadas, mole chicken and they also include some sweet treats - french toast and pancakes. The buffet is not the same week to week but this is a fare sample of what to expect. My first visit they had a delicious ceviche - so fresh and light. Our office got lunch delivered from this place. Based on the other reviews, apparently brunch is the more popular choice. I hope so, because lunch was nothing but disappointing. I ordered the Chicken Sandwich with a side salad. The sandwich came on the kind of boring bread you'd get with an Italian beef sandwich, except it was even blander and tougher to chew than usual. The chicken was unseasoned, rubbery, and burnt. The roasted red pepper was also unseasoned and seemed like it had been blanched but never roasted. There was no arugula. The artichoke mayo was the highlight of the sandwich, but unfortunately there wasn't even enough for one half. I had to grab mustard from the fridge and force the rest down. The side salad was pretty much inedible. It was drenched in vinaigrette, the lettuce was brown, and the blueberries (which was a terrible choice) were mush. It was also placed in the same styrofoam box as my hot sandwich, so you can imagine what that did to it. Overall everything was just bad. I'd be willing to try their brunch, since everyone else raves about it. I also realize I didn't get something Mexican. However, everyone else in the office disliked their various choices, as well. So if you're looking for lunch, I'd suggest avoiding this place. read more

I like the laid back, family feel at Angels and the food is even better! We have gone for brunch on the weekend countless times and whether you feel for pancakes or taco salad you are going to get a great dish! Jessica and Anibal are our favorite waitstaff and they know to make certain our coffee and Mexican hot chocolate is piping hot :) When the weather allows the back patio is such a treat while enjoying your meal (which comes with fresh chips and homemade salsa that has just the right amount of kick). I live close to Angels and make sure to swing by every once in awhile for their breakfast burrito. They integrate vegetables into their burrito in a way that is delicious. Usually, I would take a pretty firm stance to say the only vegi that belongs in a breakfast burrito is a potato, but I make a huge exception here. I'm from San Diego, land of awesome burritos, and I must say, Angels may be my favorite breakfast burrito of all time. A big part of this is due to their salsa, which is perfect. Breakfast was smashing. Huevos nortenos are unbelievable. Wife had crabcakes Benedict but skipped the hollandaise in favor of a tomatillo sauce (believe it or not, it worked). Crabcakes were perfect- large, light, tender and devoid of filler; crisp on the outside and buttery soft interior. Eggs were beautifully poached-surprisingly often that's not true. My brunch group (eleven people) met today at Angel's Mexican Restaurant, 230 S. Ashland, in Chicago's West Loop neighborhood. A couple of us had tried out the place earlier this year, as research for today's event, and found the food and service to be top-notch. We've been looking forward to today's event for some months. I'd been working with Pedro to set up the meal for my guests. I told him what our group was about and gave him a price range, and he figured out the menu, staying well within our guidelines. And what a menu it was! We had chilaquiles (three versions!), Angel's ultimate eggs (with chorizo, veggies, and Chihuahua cheese), crab cakes Benedict, bacon, sausage, breakfast empanadas (which included cactus), black beans, cilantro-herb rice, and French toast. OH! the French toast! The banana-nut version was amazing, all tender and flavorful, and topped with plenty of sliced bananas and strawberries. And then there was the coconut-crusted French toast, clearly a *big* hit with our guests. As good as the banana-nut was, the coconut was even better. Everything was served family-style, and every platter was presented so beautifully that we almost hated to dig into any of it. We dined on the lovely, flower-lined, well-shaded patio behind the restaurant, and the friendly and efficient servers kept bringing us more platters of food, one tempting delicacy after another, until we eleven were so stuffed that not a one of us could manage another bite. One of our guests has severe allergies to certain foods and was unable to eat most of what was being served. Pedro created a separate dish for this guest -- with a gorgeous presentation that caused the rest of us to oooh and aaah in envy. I've been running this bi-monthly brunch group for ten years. We've visited all sorts of places over the past decade -- never the same place twice -- and we've found a lot of winners over the years. This one, at Angel's, has to be one of the very best that we've ever encountered. Though I'd been here before for research, today's brunch far exceeded my expectations. The cook even received an ovation from our group! If you are ever in the mood for great homemade Mexican food at a reasonable price, please stop in at Angel's. What a hidden gem. I was looking for a good mexican place in the west loop, and we found this place on yelp. It is more of a brunch place, and it is definitely more crowded during this time. They have a large outdoor patio and it is dog friendly. It is a perfect place for large groups. The staff is very friendly and laid back. If you are looking for a quick bite, this is not the place to be. Everything is below $10, so don't expect Charlie Trotter service. The food is traditional and very good. They actually know how to cook with spice, which is rare these days. The breakfast tostados and chilaquiles are some of the best in the city. If you are looking for a casual place to have some drinks and eat some very good, but cheap food, check this place out. read more

I had been craving enchiladas like crazy and could not find a restaurant who delivers them past a certain point ( weird right ?) I saw Angel's on grub hub and decided to give them a try. I ordered the enchiladas and a horchata ( to meet the delievry minimum -i gave it to a cow worker- ) and MAN! I am satisfied! the food was absolutely amazing and my coworker said the horchata was the best she had ever had and she was happy they did not use cinnamon. Delivery was extremely fast. I've been here so many times for family brunches and have never gotten around to a review. Angel's is unique in that it is able to pull off the half-American breakfast, half-Mexican menu without compromising either side. Pancakes and omelettes are up to snuff with the offerings at trendier brunch spots elsewhere in the city with a pithy fraction of the wait. Mexican food is authentic and delicious, and is an exception to my general axiom that one should never eat Mexican food outside of Pilsen; they do one of the better moles I've had. Since the variety can be dizzying, my favorite route is the interface between Angel's two halves: Chilaquiles, the Mexican breakfast ($8), served with two eggs and your choice of salsa roja, salsa verde, or mole. They also offer a reasonably priced buffet ($10-$12 depending on the weekend) which has high turnover and very fresh food. The coffee is hot, strong and thick, and is one of my favorite things Angel's. The staff is also very friendly. All in all, while Angel's isn't among the best in the city at anything it does, it gets serious props for doing a wide variety of things very well. It is good enough to be full, but not full enough to require budgeting half a day to eat there. As such, it is one of the most serviceable, crowd-pleasing dining options that I know of. For two years running I've come here with two friends for a weekend brunch/lunch (we can't get going THAT early) ceremonial post holiday gift exchange. It is a little against my interest to promote the place--since on a Saturday afternoon it was pleasantly and convivially buzzing-but not uncomfortably crowded. The food isn't, itself, 5 star. Though its good, plentiful, and well prepared, its not extraordinary. Our margaritas were--I'm pretty sure-made from a mix-and were a little sweet for my taste-but they were generously poured, pleasant, and not expensive. My soup ( a special) didn't come with the advertised avocado on top--but was very filling and tasty-with tender chunks of steak. Perfect for a chilly day. What makes this a 5 star place is the coziness. and cheerfulness and hospitality. Our waitress was amazingly good and accommodating. She had no problem with exclamatory ladies covering the small table with wrapping paper, with splitting the check between two credit cards, and with salvaging our remains for taking home. We never felt rushed or less than welcome. And-like other reviewers, I give a place lots of points for serving breakfast all day. read more

I'm signing up for Yelp just to provide a review of Angel's. It is a family-run restaurant on the West side of the West Loop, and it's worth the walk. Terrific Mexican food, friendly service, and solid margaritas. Try the taco flight for something traditional, or the molcajete for something you don't see everywhere. They have a great patio out back, which in the spring and summer is decorated with fresh flowers. Don't miss Angel's - it's a great find. read more
