    My custom bowl
    Eric S.

I found my way here while I was sightseeing in DC. My only problem was an overwhelming amount of options for customization. I was very happy with what I got and this is the kind of place I would frequent if there was something like it near me.

A visit to the Rice Bar Marketplace at Penn Q for a quick dinner. I got the standard tofu noodle soup with bean sprouts, carrots, zucchini, eggplants, shitake mushrooms, and a crisp radish salad, with tofu and an added egg. Rice Bar is becoming my go-to for a quick meal downtown. Their ingredients and fresh and tasty, and the combinations in their bowls are perfectly proportioned. Two thumbs up for Rice Bar. You should give them a try if you haven't already!

This place offered friendly and helpful service, telling us to order from the pink menu if you don't understand the ordering procedure. It is a cheerful atmosphere to sit and eat. The udon bulgogi noodle bowl was great and full of flavor. Top it off with some creamy mango soda from Japan.

Stopped in for a quick meal and was glad I did. They have a set menu or you can build your own rice bowl or noodles. Service was quick and they had plenty of seating. My only wish is that there was more in a bowl, as it was a fairly light serving.

On a cold wintery day, a nice hot bowl of bibimbap sounded good, so we stopped by Rice Bar to get some Korean food. Order by filling out a form that has all the options for the bowl, whether it is rice or noodles, and deciding the toppings, sauces, and protein to add to the custom bowl. Hand over the completed form to the staff, and after scooping all the ingredients into the bowl, it's ready in a matter of minutes. Overall, a great place to quickly get a delicious bibimbap near the Archives.

Miso soup, rice bowl with galbi and raw tuna with seaweed, eggplant, mushroom and cucumber

My friend and I wanted a quick dinner and found Rice Bar on Yelp. It is a Chipotle-style Korean eatery with a variety of rice, lettuce and noodle base options. You pay between $2-5 per protein and can select as many as you want, 4 free toppings and about a $1 for each additional topping. I had a base of half black rice and white rice with galbi and raw tuna as protein. The bowl was huge and about $20. Great sauce selection and meat was tender. Tuna portion was skimpy, but galbi was a nice size scoop. I got a miso soup for $4, okay, not worth the price. It was bland and seemed like old tofu.and overcooked squash in it. I would return again for a quick bite. Seating is a little slim.

This place operates like a Korean version of Chipotle, with a slight twist. Before approaching the counter, you write down your name and order on a slip of paper, then hand it to the person at the first station. This person adds your chosen ingredients to a bowl and moves you down the assembly line. This makes for an efficient ordering process in theory; however, there were some bottlenecks on the line as people ahead of me stopped to ask questions about ingredients and sauces. I ordered a bulgogi bibimbap with brown rice, kale, radish salad, eggplant, carrot, and gochujang sauce. The food was tasty and filling. Unfortunately, the rice and bulgogi were not as warm as I would have liked. Also, the person who prepared my bowl substituted mushrooms for the eggplant I requested and I only realized after I had already paid.

If you're looking for the Korean equivalent of Chipotle/Cava, this is your spot. So much customizability - you can get Bibimbop, ramen, and other Asian food here. I ended up getting my own ramen - not the best ramen ever, but for what it was, it was good!

Stopped by for a bite after an afternoon exploring the Smithsonian museums. It was moderately crowded, but it was quick to order and I got my food quickly. I ordered the bulgogi bibimbap and it was delicious. I chose the gochujang sauce and I love the variety of vegetables that came in the bowl. I also chose the black rice. The rice was perfectly cooked and I love that they have this option as it is very authentic to Korean cuisine. I would give this bowl a 9/10 for the variety of vegetables, taste, and decent price ($13). I would love to try the spicy chicken bowl next time.

We LOVED everything about this place! One of the best Poke bowls I've ever had, even though that's not their speciality. We will be back here next time we're in DC!

A Hidden Gem in DC - Race Bar is a Must-Try! Race Bar is an absolute standout in the DC food scene. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with an atmosphere that perfectly blends authenticity with a sleek, modern vibe -- it feels both welcoming and exciting. The food? Incredible. Every dish bursts with bold, flavorful ingredients, and the portions are more than generous. You can build your own bowl or choose one of their expertly crafted options off the menu -- either way, you can't go wrong. The price per bowl is surprisingly reasonable for the quality and quantity you get. The staff really sets this place apart. Friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the food they're serving -- it's the kind of genuine service that makes you want to come back again and again. Whether you're a local or just passing through DC, Race Bar is one of those spots you'll be recommending to everyone. Flavorful food, fantastic prices, and a vibe that hits just right. Don't miss it!

This build a bowl place offers flavors that seemed genuinely Korean to me. This wasn't 100% a good thing, as the pickled radish salad smelled a bit too much after riding with me on the Metro for a while and one of the sauces I got was so salty it made by heart flutter a bit. I appreciated the black rice and the greens and got a decent portion of tofu and vegetables, and it was a quick and easy pickup experience. Given that the whole point is to build a bowl, if I had a chance to do it again I'd pick differently and not use the sauces heavily.

The Rice Bar is a must go each time we visit Washington DC. It's in a very convenient spot in the city. It's unique with the way you have to order, you fill out a card with what you want, so it's perfect for introverts. They have pre selected bowls, or you can build your own. The place is very welcoming and so is the staff. Kind of small on the inside, but definitely a great take out location. They also tend to be a bit pricey, but definitely worth it. Easily our favorite place to eat in DC.

Tucked into the heart of Dupont Circle with its unmistakable bright blue awning, the restaurant is intimate, moody, and always buzzing. Inside, you'll find dim lighting, a handful of cozy wooden bar booths, seats along the bar, and a few outdoor tables. It's not a huge space, which only adds to its charm and makes every reservation feel like a win. The atmosphere is perfect for sharing dishes and lingering over dinner with friends. The food was incredible...I genuinely loved every single bite. Just be prepared: the Sichuan spice is no joke! If you aren't expecting it, it'll definitely sneak up on you (in the best way). My must-orders? The chili wontons, Dan Dan noodles, and beef noodles. Every dish was packed with bold flavor and left me wanting to come back for more. If you've been trying to score a reservation, keep at it. Astoria is one of those places that's absolutely deserving of its reputation, and I'll be thinking about those noodles until my next visit.

Inside had small tables and a kinda casual cocktail bar vibe Beef Noodles - the highlight and actually very good! The noodles are long and handmade and chewy. They hold onto the sauce very well! The sauce has a slight kick and is very savory. The beef is soft and also flavorful! I feel the price for the portion is kinda expensive though 8/10 Chili wontons - skin is silky and soft, sauce is savory with a small kick as well! Even though the sauces look similar to beef noodle they taste very different. The fillings had good flavor and overall were good but were a bit tougher and dryer than I would prefer. 6/10 Crab fried rice - crab is slightly overcooked but naturally sweet. It has a light curry taste throughout and was pretty good but didn't really stand out 5.5/10 Mapo tofu - slight kick and nice savory taste in the sauce! However I think they cut the tofu pieces way too large or the tofu they chose had way too much tofu flavor that overpowers the sauce. I'd prefer a very light silky tofu but this was a soft tofu. 6/10 Vpod - at first it just tasted like orange juice but then the other flavors peek through on the after taste and when I mixed it more. Even though it was good, it still felt very basic 5/10 Philadelphia Scotsman - it's pretty ginger forward. Technically the level of ginger spice is fine but strong but then the rest of the drink got completely overpowered and so this just wasn't that great 2.5/10

We started with the gyoza, which were so crispy and flavorful that we ended up ordering a second plate. For ramen, we tried the tsukemen, which comes with cold noodles that you dip into a rich, soy-forward broth. It was an interesting experience, but after a while the repetitive dipping became a bit tedious for me. We also ordered the spicy miso ramen, which was my favorite of the two. It had a nice kick without being overwhelmingly spicy. It also came with bean sprouts, which aren't usually my favorite, but they added a pleasant crunch and texture to the bowl.
