This was first time at this onigiri place, and I'll be back. I think he was the owner, but he was very nice and friendly! I got the quad combo with the Korean BBQ, tuna, and two salmon. Ricebunn is located in the Trade food hall in Irvine. They specialize in onigiris, or rice balls, but they also have some plate entrée options. Parking in this plaza during lunch time can be a mess, so I recommend coming a little early to beat the lunch rush. Sad to say the Trade food hall does not have many great options, so this was more of a settled decision since we were already there. I usually don't like such a heavy carb meal, especially during lunch when we still have to get back to work and be productive. I ordered their Onigiri Trio ($13) where you can pick the flavors of onigiri you like to mix and match and try a good variety. I went with the KBBQ Beef, Tuna Mayo, and upon recommendation of the friendly helpful cashier the Salmon. You can make any of your rice balls spicy, so I asked for the spices on the side. The nice cashier also threw in a complimentary lemonade. It was much appreciated. The food was prepared in a reasonable amount of time. These rice balls were artistically crafted, and unlike the standard ones, they had a generous amount of filling on the inside AND on top. Yum! Really good deal for lunch and I feel like it was well executed. For all the onigiri lovers, this spot is for you. Was super excited to try this place. We ordered the Origini Quarter that comes with 4. To my surprise they advertised with the protein but when it was time to pay, they charged extra for protein. Not enough seaweed to grab, and the rice falls apart. The taste is good but definitely not an authentic Japanese origini. Also Japanese cucumber salad, nothing like the picture. Unfortunately the time I went to try, I was not impressed for several reasons. The rice was overcooked making the onigiri very sticky and mushy. Out of the 4 fillings chosen, only 1 was decent the rest low quality. The good one is salmon! It was a chunk of salmon, tender and flaky cooked well. Not just canned salmon which was a plus. However, it's not worth the extra cost (.50) to get it spicy as it's just a dollop of sriracha on top of the rice. Crab was so disappointing it's stuffed with imitation crab with lots of mayonnaise I was expecting real crab since that's what's listed on the menu. Tuna mayo was canned tuna blended like a paste. Presentation wise, not appealing to see a huge clump on top of my onigiri. It was too salty for my own taste & the mushy rice didn't compliment the tuna spread. Vegan option was not appetizing, I wouldn't recommend. The filling looks like canned assorted veggies mixed with too much mayonnaise/cream. Of the veggies, I could make out peas, corn and carrots, the rest were miscellaneous/obscured by the amount of cream coated on it. I usually gravitate towards tuna onigiris because they're my favorite and Ricebunn did not disappoint~ It is a bit pricey for how small it is, but it's totally worth. I liked how soft the rice was and the amount of tuna they put in it. I thought the tuna was just only on top, but nope there's a huge amount inside the onigiri as well once you bite into it. The ratio is perfect compared to how other onigiris are where there's so much rice not so much protein. I thought the furikake seasoning also helped enhanced the flavors too. Being half Japanese and having onigiri from convenient stores during summer break was the norm for me and this was no where near what onigiri is like or tastes like. The mayo was too heavy and the tuna was like canned tuna. The Korean bbq beef tasted good, and the shrimp was the worst I believe. The shrimp smelled and I think it was too heavily covered in mayo.
