OK, I'm from Seattle so I know a little bit about Chinese food. I'm not saying I'm the guru of Chinese food but these guys obviously know what they're doing. I've got the special combination for lunch at 10:95+ my drink comes with soup and an egg roll. Couldn't be more pleased pretty good for the area. New Mexico sucks for Chinese food as a whole. My quest to find decent Chinese food in Albuquerque brought me to the Rising Star today for lunch. Unfortunately, I did not find it here. I ordered the Orange Chicken, which in other restaurants is a dish of battered, deep fried chicken nuggets tossed in a thick gloppy sauce flavored with orange zest to give the chicken that special citrus tang. However, the Riding Star's version of Orange Chicken is a small mound of batter fried chicken pieces with a thin sauce served on the side which tastes more like maple pancake syrup than oranges. The flavorless bland beige rice that accompanies the entree added nothing to the overall dish. Even the egg rolls had no flavor and tasted like they were taken out of the freezer and flash fried. But as bad as the food was, I must say that the service was EXCELLENT. I was immediately greeted and seated the moment I walked in. The older woman working the front dining room was very hospitable and was taking the time to patiently explain the menu to various guests. And the young man and woman who served me were very attentive and courteous. So at the end of the day, I'll give the Rising Star three stars for its most valuable resource - the staff! read more

Lunch specials on the menu so Mongolia beef for me: crisp veg, tender beef with good flavor, and Szechuan Beef: tender beef, crisp vegs. for the Mrs. They came with soup - wonton for us, plus egg rolls & fried rice included. Although I enjoyed the experience and the service was great my food left something to be desired... My egg flower soup was a bit on the lukewarm side and I'm possibly not used to the egg flavor of the broth. I was expecting something closer to an egg drop soup which has always been a favorite. I'm not sure what makes it different from the egg flower soup but this wasn't one I was loving. All of our food came out super quick and the staff is really on top of everything however I think I just wasn't feeling my Szechuan beef and chicken. But the chicken had to many nerve tender parts and the breading was to oily. Overall though my sister and her bf say it was a fluke and that it's usually really delicious so we'll probably be going back. read more

MY NEW FAVORITE!! I have been looking for a go to chinese spot since I moved back to Albuquerque in February and I have definitely found my spot! The sesame and sweet and sour chicken is to die for ( I always ask for all white meat chicken and its only $1 upcharge!) The egg drop soup is my all time favorite. All I had was the Mongolian beef--and it slaps every time. Perfectly cooked, flavorful, and just the right amount of heat and sweetness. Food here is always delicious. Family recipes. I know this has changed owners over the years but food is consistently good. Prices are excellent. Anything you get can't go wrong. I always get kung pao three ingredients so so good. Their general tsos is delicious!!! Service is always top notch. Very friendly and fast and hot!! This little gem, sort of hidden in a short strip mall just east of a church there is one of our favorites! The food is consistently good. I've tried 8 different things on the lunch menu and they're all good. Prices for lunch is very reasonable. The plates are slightly substantial without being too much. The staff is super attentive and really nice. Plus it's on the table fast! It is a small restaurant so it gets packed quick. We found this place a couple of years ago and now go here at least 2x a month. We have never eaten here for dinner but they are open for that too. read more

Visited this restaurant based on the reviews on Yelp and was disappointed. Their prices were very affordable and their portions are reasonable. I think this is the reason why they are getting good reviews. Staff members were friendly and courteous, but didn't know their menu. The place looked cleaned and the ambiance was nice.Drinks were limited to mostly fountain drinks. I ordered the Pork Dumplings, Ribs, and Fried Rice. The dumplings were good, but the ribs were tasteless and dried, and the fried rice lacked flavor. There's better places in town to get better Chinese food. read more

What can go wrong with a strip mall Chinese restaurant? Well nothing at this one. Very clean and pleasant greeting. The service was good for a family run business. Okay, nothing terrible to say, just nothing great either. We tried the classics, potstickers, orange chicken, beef with broccoli, combo lo mein. The potstickers were okay, the first piece I tried of the orange beef made me think "maple syrup?". My wife thought "cinnamon?" Then she said chicken and waffles! The lo mein came, not terrible, a little bland and starchy, then the beef with broccoli, amazingly bland, like not even adequately salted. None of it worth writing home about, or even taking home. Service was fine, no sparkling conversationalists, but I prefer that to overly talky and annoying waitpersons. The dining room seemed clean enough. There are a handful of Chinese restaurants that score in the 4 stars and above in the Northside of ABQ, and I've tried a few of them but really haven't found one that I would want to go back to. Today, I did. I was there about 12:15, and it was packed but only had to wait less than 5 mins for a table to be cleared. The lunch special for $ 9.95 was a deal. Hot and Sour soup was really good, with a choice of white, brown, or fried rice and a spring roll with a generous entrée. I ordered Chicken and mixed veggies and was very pleased with it. I would, however, note that it was more of what I would have expected if I had ordered Moo Goo Gai Pan. A light or "white" sauce as compared to a more "brown" sauce you tend to see with Chicken and mixed veggies stir-fry. Regardless, it was to my liking. My wife had Sesame Chicken and enjoyed it. The wait staff were very friendly and responsive. The decor and interior were dated and a little dingy but clean. Yelp rating right now is a 4.1, and Google is 4.6. I think that range is spot on. The trick now is whether it will be constantly good. I'll post back when I know that answer. read more

Have ordered takeout from here a few times. Super easy process online and with a takeout window to pickup. Prices are some of the more reasonable ones here in town. Service is good and staff is friendly. Food is just ok. General Chicken was not very crispy and in a brown sauce (I prefer the red version). Egg rolls are small and have some kind of Cinnamon flavor to them. Their Lo Mein noodles also have this favor which is super odd. Wonton soup was also a bit different than traditional and subpar. read more

Ok this place rocks. The real deal old school dine in or take out. We ordered the Crab Rangoon and were surprised to find more crab than cream cheese. My lunch combo of General Taos chicken was exceptionally delicious. The breading was light and crisp, the sauce was on point and not over or under sauced, the fried rice and egg drop soup were of good quality as well fresh and flavorful. Sarah ordered the chicken curry which was a nice green curry and very fresh veggies. Her lo mein base noodles were well cooked and delicious. Instantly greeted with lively service!! The ladies were hustling, serving a full restaurant, but were kind and patient! Restaurant and tables were very clean. Hubby and I both ordered spicy chicken dishes. I got Chicken with Garlic Sauce, he got Mongolian Chicken. The server reminded us that they were spicy dishes, but both of us assured her we wanted them extra spicy. We got our plates and they were beautiful! The veggies were vibrant, and care was taken in cooking them, because they were all crisp! Bok Choy, Broccoli, Carrot, Scallions...delicious! But...the spice was really lacking unfortunately. I haven't tried many Chinese food restaurants in the Albuquerque area. We happened on this restaurant when another place a few streets over was closed. There was ample parking in front of the store. The restaurant was busy, and we got to choose our table. The server was quick to come over with menus and to take our drink orders. Everything on the menu looked excellent. And the prices was excellent. I got 1 of the dinner combination options (orange chicken, fried shrimp, and fried rice) that comes with a cup of soup and egg roll with the dinner. The orange chicken was delicious; it did say it was spicy, but I couldn't taste the spice. The server was very attentive and refilled our drinks frequently. Not a fan. The lemon chicken sauce was watery and tasteless. The sweet and sour sauce was good but not great. I could not eat the mixed fried rice. Nice big shrimp but not very tasty. I tried to like it. I'm spoiled by another place not open on Monday. The people are awesome. read more

Rising Star is sort of hidden away in a NE Heights strip mall, but it's worth finding. I recently enjoyed lunch here and was able leased with the meal. Lots of regulars come here. The servers were very pleasant and seemed to know many of the people by name. I wonder if there is a retirement community nearby as some of the people were older and seemed to be really happy to be eating out. Food was good, if not spectacular. The Kung Pao chicken was very tasty, but a little less than spicy. I asked for a spicy sauce and Holy Cow! The Chile sauce added a lot of flavor and heat! I advise caution as you add this. The egg drop soup was excellent. Just salty enough and great flavor. The egg roll was a little disappointing. It was a bit mushy and I wasn't thrilled with the flavor. I added soy sauce and it just completely overpowered the egg roll. Maybe I'll ask for more soup next time? Great prices, decent food, kind service! I can get behind a place like this! read more

Ate there February 1, 2025. Absolutely abysmal food. Orange chicken and fried shrimp were over breaded doubling the size so that I had to pull mushy breading off the food. The fried rice was tasteless and the egg drop soup had a bad rancid oil flavor. My dining partner asked for stir fry vegetables and only got onion and green pepper. Frozen supermarket Chinese dinner would have been ten times better. So disappointed that I was misled by online reviews/ maybe it was an off night in the kitchen but it was the worst meal I ate out... maybe not ever but in the past thirty years of dining out it was the worst meal read more

I hate to give my fellow people such a poor grade but I got the seasame tofu and the Mongolian beef and it was just bad; seasame tofu comes with a bucket of sweet and sour sauce and a bucket of broiled vegetables, I had no idea such a nasty dish existed until I tried the Mongolian beef, I never had a Mongolian beef with napa in it. Food had No flavor and the combo lo mein was just bland. It was so bad, it questioned my own ethnicity why I even tried this food. Absolutely amazing! Just a simple little restaurant serving absolutely top quality Chinese food. We have been searching for this place since we moved here almost 5 years ago from Boston. Even the wonton soup was special. Everything was very fresh and was obviously cooked with the intentionof serving good food. Very dedicated staff, or appear to work very hard. Don't eat here! Got severe food poisoning from their Kung Pao Shrimp. They just got red tagged by the health department....dont do it!

It was our first time eating here and the food was spectacular. The service was fast and polite. We ordered the Po Po platter and it did not disappoint, the calamari rings hit the spot as well as everything else.
