But I decided to give it a try, and I'm so glad I did! When we arrived, we spoke with the owner, who was very knowledgeable about which dishes contained gluten and which could be made gluten-free. I asked plenty of questions about cross-contamination, and she reassured me that my meal would be prepared in a clean, separate pan. Should have looked at their website for operating hours, and didn't know they close from 2:30 to 4:30PM, yet when we showed up a few minutes before the afternoon close, they had no problem whippin' us up a take-out family meal for 2. While waiting, we visited the guitar shop--located right next to them--which was convenient. Late lunch was quite a lot of Chin-Amer fare for a great price, honestly. It was standard stuff, but perfect for two large humanoid dudes, with plenty of leftovers for whenever. I will say their S&S Pork was made with huge chunks of swine, yet was still very tender. Finding good Chinese food is hard here in ABQ. So when we heard about South China, we had to try it. Hole in the wall in a small strip mall off Wyoming. Service was quick and she rounded on us frequently. Once we ordered, we were given a cup of egg drop soup (delicious). Food was the perfect portion size. Spicy but not too spicy. The egg roll was vegetable. Even though it is on the opposite side of town for us, we will be back to try other options on the menu. read more

Got a lot of recommendations to try this place so here we are. Just after lunch so seating was plentiful. Menu looked good- they had my favorite - lemon chicken. But not as a lunch special. Oh well. Ordered lunch specials Szechuan Beef & Kung Pao Chicken. First comes the Egg Drop Soup with Chow Mein noodles. Haven't had soup served like that in a long time. Our meals closely behind. Both had a nice heat level, not too much. Each came with a decent amount of meat and veggies that were cooked nicely - not over done. Service was good, she was present but not obnoxiously so. South China is located in Integrity Plaza off Wyoming between Backroads Guitars and Then Alteration Shop. SC has 13 4-top tables that can be pushed together to accommodate larger groups if need be. There are no booths, only tables with chairs, so wheelchair users will not have any issue here. I ordered the orange chicken lunch special (L28) to go, which came with fried rice and an egg roll. For the lunch, tax, and 3.5% credit card fee, the total was $10.24 before tip. If patrons pay with cash they can avoid the credit card fee. The fried rice didn't have any ingredients, so that was a disappointment. Without ingredients other than rice and a flavoring I'm not even sure if it counts as fried rice. The egg roll was exceptionally greasy and had only cabbage as a filling. It would have been better with chicken or another meat added. I enjoyed the orange chicken, though it did seem quite greasy as well. I very much enjoyed the sauce, which had pieces of orange peel and onions. Unfortunately that was only one item I enjoyed out of the three in the meal. While I enjoyed the sauce on the orange chicken, the greasiness of the meal overall and the lack of ingredients in the fried rice and egg roll didn't impress me. I wouldn't go back. read more

The service is fine, the food is the problem... My wife ordered chicken Chop Suey, which is supposed to have more ingredients than just white chicken and shredded cabbage, but it didn't. I ordered egg foo yung. Instead of fluffy egg patties with pork and crunchy vegetables covered in a light brown sauce, these egg patties were drenched with the sauce and one big, mushy mess that I tried to eat, but couldn't. The shrimp fried rice wasn't terrible; it just wasn't very fried. We kept the leftover rice and threw the rest out. $40 later, both of us were still hungry. The front desk skinny lady is the reason it's a three star. She was so disconnected with us when we got there. Not nice or not mean. Just not there? if that makes sense. NO connection with her whatsoever. On the other hand, the other lady that was serving on us was so kind and even recommended us some things cause it was our first time eating there. I tried this place with my mom, and it was amazing. I've never noticed this place, I've shopped at that shopping center for years. The food was great it was all hot and fresh, I've never had such a good chow mein outside of Chinatown in San Francisco. The vegetables were done perfect and the meat was amazing, the sauce is amazing. The egg rolls are to-die-for I don't know what these other people are talking about, I used to work in a Chinese restaurant. They make awsome crab rangoons as well. This quiet little place has been one of my favorites for years. The exterior and interior are unassuming, the food is the star. It's good, inexpensive and plentiful. My favorite dishes are the garlic chicken, pork chow mein and the hot sour soup. The hot & sour soup is different from most others. It's slightly sweet and has lots of veggies you don't see in other hot & sour soups. The garlic chicken is savory, garlicly and slightly spicy. This is the first time I have ever written a review for anything. South China is a special case. The food and service were both amazing. I ordered the shrimp with vegetables. The shrimp was juicy, (each one was completely deveined) the vegetables were fresh and the sauce was so delicious. It came with a huge portion of non-greasy fried rice, egg flower soup, crunchy noodles and an egg roll for a little over 9 bucks. The owner was so sweet and accommodating. She noticed that I ordered a seafood dish and told me that the egg roll had pork (which I don't eat) and offered me the vegetarian egg roll instead. South China is a hidden gem. This is my favorite Chinese food restaurant. I often frequent Ho Lo Ma because it is closer to my house, but it is not nearly as good as this place! This is a family owned restaurant. The woman who works as the server and cashier is very kind and hard-working. The food has wonderful flavor and the portions are large. I really enjoy that the vegetables here are always artfully cut and plentiful and the meals are beautifully presented. I especially love the general Taos chicken as well as their teriyaki chicken. The sauce on the teriyaki chicken is like no other that I've had- very delicious!!! The meals are served in the restaurant with complimentary egg drop soup. The best Chinese food I have had in a very long time at a wonderful price. Delicious, crispy, sweet-spicy orange chicken, different but delightful fried rice, and the beef lo mein was great too.
