Anyone who has ever skied Breckenridge knows that once the day is ended on the mountain, the real fun begins - for those foolish enough to head straight back to Denver... The line of traffic begins at the parking lot, and remains a parking lot until you hit the hill east of Idaho Springs. Yay, it lest not be that way... After you wrap it up on the hill, pack you gear up and head straight into the heart of Breck, where you'll find a gem of a little Mexican restaurant named Rita's. From 4pm to 6pm is a happy hour sure to please every level of skier that graces it's halls. The popular dish is the 3 taco's for either $5 or $7 dollars, depending on the meat inside. They come with a choice of beef or bean ($5), or chicken, steak, or fish ($7). Once you've decided on the meat (or lack there of) it's time to decide how you want them garnished. There is a bunch of options, each tasty in their own right, so that just about everyone can find a flavor to match their person... First time to try out. Very impressed. Went for trivia night, which was a lot of fun, but found the best margaritas in town, along with arguably the best bartenders. Extremely efficient and amazing to watch them whip out all their different margaritas and fruit drink options with a packed house. Had the beef soft tacos, which were pretty good, but it was "The Kenny" margarita that stole the show. I thought I made a great margarita until I tried that one. Amazing! I had three and could've kept drinking them all night if not for having to drive later. Place is small and was packed, which made for a fun vibe. Servers were friendly and worked their rears off to get all the food and drinks out quickly. Definitely one of our new "go to's" in Breck. I had wanted to go here for about a year. It just never worked out, they were either closed or the people I was with didn't want to go there. So I was very excited when we finally got to check them out! I will also make an excuse for the owner/ bartender, and what I am about to write. They were just about to close for "the mud season." I'm not sure how many more weeks after we were there that they would close for a short period. Another observation, some locals came in while we were there. The owner really perked up, and the locals seemed to love this place! Any restaurant that is a hit with the locals is where you want to go! I am also making an assumption that the one who was so rude to us was the owner. He didn't look like a "Rita," but he talked like he was in charge, and the other employees addressed him like they'd address an owner. When the owner let us in, we could already tell he wasn't happy to be there. And not happy for us to be there. Just a vibe about him. We were told that they were sheets of paper with options written out on them near the salt and pepper on our table, we could use those to circle our protein, tortilla type, our sauce, etc. actually a very cool and simple way to take our orders! We waited and waited while people who arrived after us were waited on first. It was happy hour, so if you order two of the same tacos you get the third free. A good deal! But I wanted to try three different types of proteins with three different types of preparation styles. They all came out pretty delicious! Afterword, we sat for about 20 minutes waiting for our check. When the owner came by with our check, he tossed it on our table without looking and just kept walking. He had tossed it right into one of our trays, right into the guacamole. It took us a couple minutes to get it cleaned off, we were all pretty miffed at the sleight. We had been sleightly unhappy with the service before this, wondering if we imagined it. But tossing the check directly into leftover guacamole while not looking at or acknowledging us, we could tell we weren't welcome. I also want to make a quick note. Some people are going to say "Who has leftover guacamole?" it baffles me too. But our friend was born and raised in Egypt, and only came here about one year ago. We will work on him, one day he won't have leftover guacamole. But the guacamole was clearly in his tray, back from the edge of the table. We had left room for the check to be placed on the edge of the table, but instead the owner chucked it right into the guacamole. So the food was pretty good. The service was awful. I didn't know this was a dive bar. My buddy and I walked by this place in search of something to eat. Apparently, he's visited this place in the past. After walking around, I was freezing so I hoped this place would be a respite from the elements outside. It was a small relief, but not much. One of the windows behind me was propped open for ventilation and it kept the place at a cold temperature. They had a decent happy hour special: $2.50 for a can of Tecate beer (you save a whopping 50 cents per can). $7 for 3 Tacos (it's almost like buy 2 get 1 free) The food was alright, I didn't think it was the best. They give you different options for topping your tacos which kind of complicates things- I think that's why our tacos took a while to come out. The tacos were served on 8 inch soft tortillas. I wish they were warmed up before they were topped because they seemed cold. The service was pretty good considering the double duty the bartenders had to do. It's a little divey but that's what gives it character, I found the tacos to be really tasty, however the rice was hard and overcooked and the beans were pretty plain. The different salsas were all great. You were allowed to pick 3, but our waiter brought us all 5. I had to ask for water about 6 times before getting it myself from the bartender, so you can say that service is not their strong spot. Other than that, everything was good. The margaritas were tasty, the portions were large and the food was pretty decent. The highlight of the night was doing a shotski. I told my friends that I've never done one before and I was hoping to do one at Breckenridge. Dude asked the bartender if he had a shotski, bartender replied not since 1980. Few minutes later, bartender exclaims look what I found from the time machine. Behold! A shotski! Their hand-squeezed margaritas are delicious and they have a huge assortment of tequila. If you want to get chips and dip you have to pay; chips are $3 and dips are anywhere between $3-$6.
