We needed to leave the world of overpriced hotel buffet breakfasts and have a decent and quick local meal during our 1-night stay in Fairbanks...River City Cafe fit the bill of a place that was a) open when we left hungry early in the morning, b) was quick as we just had a little bit of time to see downtown Fairbanks before needing to be back at the hotel for a Riverboat Cruise, and close to other things we wanted to see downtown. It's an order-at-the-counter coffee shop with a full espresso bar, drip coffee, and breakfast sandwiches. Good options for vegetarians too. I got an English Muffin Sammie with just egg and cheese. It came with American cheese and there was an upcharge to pick any other cheese they had...I went with Gouda and the sandwich was good. My wife didn't want bread so they laid it out on lettuce for her...ended up being more like a breakfast salad but it filled her up. I tried their drip coffee but found it wasn't strong enough for my tastes. They were nice enough to let me trade it back in as a downpayment for a double espresso which they served me in a fine "Alaska" mug and it was much better. The staff served as quickly and well, though they didn't seem happy to be there. The 2 people we spoke with never smiled and we got the impression we may have been annoying them without special requests (no bread with my wife's sandwich, the different cheese, trading in the coffee) so that was a little bit of a bummer. Still, the food and drink served us well and came out quickly. It's a good quick stop for an espresso-based coffee drink and quick breakfast meal or pastry. Super close to the ice museum and a couple minutes walk from the Antlers Arch and Cultural Center. read more

Cute cafe with friendly staff. Great place for a lite lunch. I recommend the veggie panini. It was piping hot and server with chips. Fountain sodas were an option so I ordered a cherry coke to add to my meal. Love fountain sodas :) Service was quick considering there was a small crowd when I arrived. Service was friendly and quick. This is a small shotgun-style (narrow but longer room) cafe with a colorful and welcoming setting. Tables are small and it's not a place for larger groups to all eat at one table. Our food and drinks were prepared quickly and were tasty and fresh. Prices were average for AK imo, which is to say about 20-30% higher than in the lower 48. We ate twice here for lunch and had wraps which were good-sized and came with a small bag of potato chips. Coke soft drink products. Saw several locals stop in and either eat at the cafe or pick up lunches or drinks to go. Location is in a small arcade and there was lots of parking available on the street outside the front of the cafe. read more

Cute little tucked away coffee shop. Initially stopped in for breakfast but we didn't see anything appealing, so we ordered coffee. The coffee was decent. They have a good variety of beverage options besides coffee which is nice to see. They have an assortment of baked goods on display that is definitely eye catching as soon as you walk in. I love the setting of this cafe. The walls are decorated with local artist work that's available to purchase. It's a cute little spot, definitely worth stopping by to check it out. It was pretty busy when we arrived and it was a one man show employee at the time; she did a great job considering the hustle and bustle of out of town visitors stopping in. Meh. Winter time. I thought I'd warm up with some coffee, a snack and a comfortable couch. They have a couple of couches in the back but you'd be hard pressed to find a less comfortable place to sit. I got a egg wrap and it was fine. You want ketchup and it will cost you 50¢ more. Not kidding. The server copped an attitude when I expressed surprise. "I don't make the rules dude, you don't have to be mad at me." I wasn't close to mad. My guess is she has heard it too many times from too many customers. As Fairbanks cafes go. It's about on par. There are so few choices in this town. I'm just glad they were open. This is clearly a place that doesn't want you to hang around. The wifi was free but clocked in at . 60 Mbps down (six tenths) and .30 Mbps up. Compare that to my ATT phone. 56 Mbps down, 17Mbps up. That's about 100 times faster. Running around with her head cut off, not even paying attention to her line of customers. This to me is very unprofessional and unappealing to even walk in a cafe of chaos. I almost told her to not disrespect your coworkers in front of customers. I mean the attitude was uncalled for and very immature. As for the food it's alright at best. I got the chicken saltimbocca panini (however you spell it) coleslaw, chips, blueberry white chocolate scone, and coffee. Coffee was great! Scone was a little underbaked but great flavor. The panini was bathed in the oil of the pesto and extremely salty! The coleslaw was literally a bag of salad you buy at the grocery store thrown in with some cabbage and watered down mayonnaise. For a small, simple cafe, this place is great! Sandwiches, soups, wraps, and coffee are the main offerings. I like how the sandwiches can be made exactly to order including bread, meat, cheese, veggies, sauce. It was fresh and flavorful and about $12 a sandwich with chips and a chowder. The coffee was really delicious too, and there's a daily special. There's about 15 tables so it likely gets crowded around lunch time if there a rush. read more

This place is right behind the Marriott in downtown Fairbanks. It's a small and very un-assuming little cafe where it seems a lot of locals frequent. I first experienced the Kaladi Bro beans here by way of an Americano and *really* thoroughly enjoyed the roast. Long story short, I had more and more Kaladi Bro in Delta Junction during the rest of my trip and, before flying back home, stopped in here to take home some 1# bags. The gals that served at the place were friendly and quick; the shots were tasty and definitely memorable... they carry hot sandwiches and some pastries and other sweet goodies.. but most importantly, they brew an excellent bean. This is a cute & warm café in the heart of downtown. I've walked past quite a few times but finally stopped in. Since it is a cafe, I had to try the coffee. Espresso shots are my litmus for coffee & River City didn't disappoint. I had a dopio (2 shots espresso, $1.75), a blueberry scone ($3), and a Reuben ($12). The scone was nicely crisp on the crust & had a lovely crumb on the inside. The Reuben could've been better. Though it can be a bit loud for conversation or work, free wi-fi and good coffee make this a warm respite from the -30°F weather outside. read more

Not entirely sure why this place misses all the marks... Wife and I came for breakfast. They have a large menu, but nothing suited us. Settled on a croissant sandwich, which was entirely edible, but not very interesting. The latte was made well enough, but found we don't care much for Kaladi's coffee. The décor was confusing. Shabby chic? Not really. Historic/modern? The only thing inside that is old is the floor. The outside front of the building looks old, but untended, and certainly not inviting. Urban industrial? The floor is rough and unfinished, but everything else seems well tended. The walls are nicely painted, there is art for sale, and heavy fabrics on the windows. So why is the kitchen open to the dining room? And why do I have to sit at a folding card table? Surprising how close this place is to wonderful, but misses in so many ways. Kinda sad. read more

I recently moved downtown and have taken an interest in some of the shops here downtown, I have heard Their commercials on the radio and decided to take a chance. I ordered a Tuna Melt on Dark Rye, the lady at the register was friendly, and the service was reasonably fast. The only downside I would say is when I eventually got my two melt, it wasn't actually a tuna melt it was a tuna sandwich. Not that I had any problems with that, I'm generally pretty easy person to satisfy, so a regular tuna sandwich was just fine. In the end it was delicious and I enjoyed it either way. The prices are very reasonable, and I didn't actually sit inside to eat, but from what I saw it seem to be a cozy little café. I'm going to give it a four out of five, it wasn't the best thing I ever had but it was reasonable priced well friendly and a place I hope to visit again in the future. read more

There are no people there so I don't know why they messed up. Needless to say we are never going back to this place. If we hadn't paid we would have left. Now waiting for our order again.
