We stayed here for the first time after contemplating for many years. I am 7 months pregnant and couldn't do our usual tent camping on this trip. The cabin photos on the website do not do it justice. The cabins area is gorgeous, surrounded by aspen trees and views of the high mosquito flat mountain peaks. We were pleasantly surprised. Cabins are very well kept and the kitchens are stocked with everything you need. Service is phenomenal, above and beyond. The staff are extremely welcoming and accommodating. Finally, the grill/kitchen - that black bean burger though...mmm. Homemade brownies and cobblers are a win too. Our stay was worth every penny, even though we were initially apprehensive about the high cost. read more

We ate here twice while in Mammoth for 10 days in June. The first time, we just picked up pie to go. My husband loved his coconut cream pie! The next time, we were hungry after our hike, so we split a pulled pork sandwich with some chips and took a piece of chocolate pie home. You ever were disappointed and let down when one of your favorite go to spots go out of business or the owners get too old and their kids move on... so you're sad because another favorite place bites the dust? Just found out Graphic Conclusion is no longer there because the owner died and the wife didn't want to take over...So after the Pandemic and we came up to Rock Creek and Yelped "Pie in the Sky"and it no longer existed... I was bummed... another establishment bit the dust... the Pie in the Sky lady no more.... until today... I kept yelping "food", "burgers", "restaurants" for Rock Creek Lake... nothing... Ineresting Rock Creek Lakes Resort came up... okay, let's look at pictures... hey, Twin Lakes Resort has a good place to eat... even Convict Lake has a nice place to eat... there were some pictures of food... hmmmmm... pulled pork sandwiches? After further investigation, I checked out their website... they got smoked meat? Really... no pics, no menu... even on Yelp... nada... No matter... I will Google maps it and see where this lodge is at... wouldn't you know when I got there it was the Pie in the Sky location... so I dropped everybody off to try their breakfast first... sorry, no picture of the breakfast because I started talking to a long time customer, whose daughter even worked there... she told me the history of Pie in the Sky and told me that their daughter and son in law took over the business... and the Pie in the Sky lady, the daughter's mom still bakes the cobbler... and another daughter in law now bakes the pies... and the son in law built and manages the smoker in the back... she told me to take pictures of the smoker... so I left my bar stool and went out to the back... sure enough Steve, the Pit Master and owner was prepping the brisket and his smoker was getting ready... I asked him what kind of wood they use and he told me they get almond logs locally... very cool... He informed me they make their own BBQ sauce right there... wow... no ribs today, but maybe tomorrow... and today he wanted to roast some corn in the little smoker... after talking I went back in and started talking to the lady customer again... completely forgot to take a picture of my breakfast... I remember the bacon was delicious... and noticed she had French toast... next time... it was too early to buy the BBQ and the pies, so I needed to return at 10:30 when they sell them... at 11:00 my wife and nephew were done fishing and decided to go with me... we came back and I order all the meat available to try... the brisket meal which came with chili and coleslaw... the pulled pork with the same sides and 1/4 pound of Tri Tip... and finding out that the Pie Lady made the cobbler I ordered the peach and berry cobbler along with the Coconut Cream Pie and the Lemon Cream Pie... Finding out that Pie in the Sky never left and was now taken over by family made me very very happy... I took a lot of pics with explanations with scores on all the food... My big surprise was the chili and the lemon cream pie... both got a 10/10... A big thanks to the daughter and son in law taking over the parents business... not only taking it over but making really awesome changes without sacrificing the love and charm of Pie in the Sky... it's cool because Mom and Dad still come around and help out with the business... Oh... here's another interesting thing... I asked Steve if he wanted me to make a Yelp for the restaurant and he said he has one up... It's called, Miller and Son's BBQ Sauce Brewing... when I went to their site there was no reviews no pics... so I was the first to put pics on the site... now I will go there and write another review at that site... so there you go... Pie in the Sky is now Miller and Son's BBQ Sauce Brewing... and I did go home with both the Original and the Velvet (tinge of coffee flavor) both are delicious and I will put that on my slow cooked meat... hahahaha... no offset though just a Traeger... Recently had a one night camping trip just a couple miles from the lodge, so we stopped on our drive back towards town. The service was super friendly, the food although simple American breakfast, was delicious! Just what we needed after a night of camp food (hot dogs and s'mores) In my opinion the star of the show was the coffee!! So so good, they use a local company and you can buy a bag of coffee to take back home. Breakfast goes until 10:30am. Breakfast for two with coffee was about $25 which makes it very reasonable. No dogs allowed inside the restaurant but they have a big tent with picnic tables outside- which for us just added to the experience of having breakfast in the mountains! read more

I can't say enough good things about Miller & Sons BBQ at Rock Creek Lakes Resort. The food is fantastic, plentiful and they were so easy to work with. We held a big event at the Rock Creek Lake Group Campsite and opted to have it catered, instead of having everyone make their own camp meals. I got SO many compliments on the food. Pretty much everyone went back to seconds. We did the brisket, rips, chicken, mac & cheese and beans and it was all delicious. I'd recommend it all. And their homemade BBQ sauce! To die for. Be sure to stop by for breakfast or lunch when you're adventuring at Rock Creek or order their catering for family get togethers and bigger events. Many of our guests opted to stay at the resort and they all had good things to say. This was a great option, for people who didn't want to camp. The staff at the resort was incredibly friendly and helpful. We'll definitely be back! read more

You can tell the employees here really care about their customers. We had a camping trip right up the road from here and the little market they had was perfect for all the small things we needed to pick up. The food they served really hit the spot. They had some specials so I grabbed an order of ribs and some peach cobbler .. it was perfect. The next day, we showed up about 45 mins til closing time to use their showers ($5 for 8 mins ..not bad). Even tho they were getting ready to close shop.. they still had a friendly attitude and even offered to put on a fresh pot of coffee... They even came around back to pour our cups when the coffee was brewed. PLUS theres a trailhead right across the street that was perfect for kids and dogs. This spot left a lasting impression and we will make it a point to stop here every visit! read more

(the slab is identified as layers of pie crust in between blackberries) The blackberry pie was good but too much crust Pecan chocolate chip very rich The brisket is okay, very bland I wouldn't get the brisket again. There is nothing as a great burger and piece of amazing hot apple pies after a great hike! The best hikes in the Sierras! Mosquito Flat to King Lake. 5 lakes in 3.5 miles and just the best views of any Bummer in the Sierras. It's the Sierras, the day we planned, it snowed in early October. The next day, 65 degrees and clear, beautiful sunshine! Great hikes and great people enjoying the outdoors. Made many friends along the hikes including Jackson who just turned 4 and hiked the entire way on his own! read more

We have been coming up here for about 30 years to eat at the restaurant and use the shower facilities while camping nearby. Our last trip we came up for lunch 3 of the 5 days we were there. The brisket sandwich and smoked pork sandwich are amazing. The folks who work there are all very nice and helpful. Will def be going back next time! read more

We stay in French Camp in Rock Creek Canyon every year, and it is always a treat to head up the mountain and stop in for a beer and lunch and/or dessert. The food is amazing - you order at the counter and it is brought to you fresh and hot. There is usually a good local beer or two on tap or there is a wonderful selection of canned and bottled beers and wines in the cooler that you may purchase and consume on site. The store is well stocked with essentials and more importantly souvenirs and other fun items. The best part about this place is the staff - they are always welcoming, kind and more than willing to make suggestions and recommendations. I look forward to the drive and a beer on their balcony/patio every year - I definitely recommend you do the same! read more

Like many, we happened upon this place after a fishing/camping trip at Rock Creek Lake; however, we happen by here pretty much every time we hike or explore this area around Mosquito Flats are other nearby waypoints. After burning some high altitude calories, there's no better way to pack em back on that a big relatively expensive but worth-every-penny slice of lemon meringue, chocolate, blueberry, or apple pie! The "resort" (a fancy word for a collection of buildings with a beautiful view and access to world-class back country hiking) sits at 10,000+ ft. Elevation, so breathe deeply and drink plenty of water... And keep an eye on those littlest hikers and backpackers. The drive up the canyon is winding and pretty, too. This area always has something new to explore... So make sure to keep your blood sugar up. You know, by eating copious quantities of pie. read more

I've been fishing Rock Creek Lake for many years, while camping down in French Camp. Even though I have every lure, fly, Power bait, hooks, weights and anything else to fish for trout, I still like looking at their selection of fishing supplies even rods and reels. I know some will complain about the prices, but those can drive all the way down 25 miles to Kmart in Bishop, spend the time and fuel to save a little bit of money. If you need a fishing license, they can supply you with a yearly or daily type. When you catch that lunker at 'Rock Creek Lake', bring it in, they will take a photo and post it on the bragging board. If you didn't have any luck fishing the shoreline, you can rent one of their rental boats. For those that camp at the lake or elsewhere, they carry some basic supplies and sundries. I usually pick up bags of ice. If you forgot to fill those propane tanks (5, 10 & 20 lb) for your stoves, heaters, trailers, they can fill them. For some of you Yelpers who love to drink and party, they carry a selection of beer and wine, sodas for the young ones. Even though their menu has been reduced, their burgers are awesome, Mountain chili will hit the spot, weekend pancakes will start off your morning and those 'Home Made' pies are to die for. My favorite is the Cheddar Pear, when they make it, and when they do, it usually sells out fast. Try any of their delicious pies with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, yum! They have an indoor counter that sits about seven people. For those that can not get enough of the outdoors, there is patio seating on the balcony. When my friends and I came down from our Backpacking trip from Hilton Creek Lakes, Rock Creek Lakes Resort has three shower stalls with HOT water, and boy, did that feel good! These showers work on tokens which can be purchased from inside the store. You must bring your own toiletries and towel. If you're the type that does not like to pitch up a tent, you can rent a cabin with one to three bedrooms and all are heated. They also have kitchens, living rooms and bathrooms. This gem is located off Hwy 395, approximately 25 miles north of Bishop, exit Rock Creek Road at Tom's Place, then drive about 9 miles up the road. read more

I tried to go to Rock Creek Resort for Pie In the Sky this past July 4th weekend. I read on CH how good they are and really wanted to try them, but timing was just bad for us. It's a tiny corner of a space for maybe 6 people to eat at the counter. Small shop, resort part in the back I guess. Sat 7/2/11 - got there after 3pm, pie long gone at 1:30pm. Sun 7/3 - hiked all day - no time to get it. Mon 7/4/11 - Store hrs 7am-7pm, but we were leaving the area, no pie available at 8am. Time to get Pie: 10:30am-1pm (or until they run out!!) Pie in the Sky Café!!! LOVE the pies here!!! They are baked fresh daily! It's easily a 15-minute drive from the main highway, but it's SO worth it! You have to time it just right in order to get a slice of their delicious pies. Get here too early and they're not ready. Arrive after lunch with the possibility of being sold out! We arrived around 10:45 during one of our many visits and a handful of the pies weren't going to be ready till 11:30 or noon. I'm not a big fresh fruit pie kind of girl, but these pies are absolutely delicious! I would recommend any of the fresh fruit pies. Most of the time they are served warm and fresh out of the oven. My favorite is the blueberry!! It's pretty pricey for a slice of one of these bad boys, starting at $6.50 a slice (but its worth it and you won't be disappointed). They sell whole pies, but you pay per slice. I went with a group after a long hike. There was 6 of us and we each got something different. We ordered Cheddar and Pear, Banana Cream, Chocolate Cream, Cranberry Walnut, and Rhubarb. Ok...this review is for the PIE! My husband has camped there (rented a cabin and loved it) but I don't care...this is serious business. Absolutely, hands-down, the best pie ever, anywhere...better than my Aunt Betsy's and that's saying a lot. Each day Sue King makes a set of pies and they write them up on the board...then as the day progresses, they get crossed off as they get eaten up. They close fairly early (3?) but luckily they will still sell you pie to go if they've got any left - then you can eat it out on the balcony because let's face it, you have pie, so you're not going anywhere until you eat it. I'm not a cream pie type, so I'm just going to rave about the fruit pies. We've had the blueberry, the peach, but my favorite is an old fashioned one - the rhubarb. My gramma used to make it and I know it's not a trendy one, but lucky for me, Sue had gotten some fresh rhubarb from friends and so that was one of the few left on the list. I can't tell if I like the filling or the crust best - the crust is light, flaky and sprinkled with sugar and the fillings let you know that these babies came from actual real fruit! So, if you're heading above Bishop - take the time and drive out to the Pie in the Sky - well worth it!!! Should you be so lucky as to see Rhubarb on the list - try it, it's sweet and tart at the same time - it's an experience you should try at least once. read more

He ended up lost, so I stopped into the resort to get some trail advice and see where he might have ended up. Jim and Amy were super helpful. This Review is mainly for Rock Creek Lake, and Pine Grove Campground! I was unable to find a part where I could write a review specifically for the actual campgrounds, but this will do! So we managed to do this for 3 whole nights in a tent, even when it got down to 30-40 Degrees...Chilly!!! I grew up as a girl scout and felt pretty prepared camping even though it had been lets say over 10 years. Yes we were a little unprepared, but honestly TOM the Campground Manager was simply AMAZING! At first I had my reservations because when I think of Camping I remember Kings Canyon, Yosemite, and all those Giant Redwoods. However my better half suggested we go somewhere near Bishop. Ok, first time ever on the 395, and all I could keep thinking was this looks more like desert than Forrest. Even when we got up to Tom's place I was like are we even in the mountains yet? Trust me, I am sure it is gorgeous when everything is covered in snow. As we drove up the narrow road passing campsite after campsite, I just wanted to keep going higher and higher hoping the Trees were more Grand...but they didn't it just got harder to breathe! That explains why the first night we had headaches and it was hard for us to breathe...we were 9400 feet above sea level...YIKES!!! Overall we found an amazing spot at the Pine Grove Campground to set up along the creek, running past our campsite...the lake is gorgeous and one of a kind! I would have to say this was one of those little Gems that not a lot of people know about and I am glad we camped there! NO REGRETS! P.S. Only $20 a night to post up! That's cheap in my book!!! read more

PIE. -- That could really be the only thing I say and attach 5 stars and I would be telling the truth. Honestly, some of the best pies ever. I almost hate reviewing this place because I'd like to keep it a secret. But after Sue (the owner) had her "Pie in the Sky" story printed in Sunset magazine, it really isn't a secret anymore. If you want a slice, I'd recommend getting here around noon. By 2:30, you are pretty much looking at "sold out" on the menu board. Some of the pies are seasonal such as my favorite, Cheddar Pear. She only uses fresh pears so that flavor doesn't start showing up until late August and September. The worst part about this review...they are now closed for the winter. You are going to have to wait until next spring to get a slice of pie. Even if you aren't headed to Rock Creek Lake, the 9 mile side trip up from the 395 would really be worth it! read more

For those giving this family run busn anything less than 5 stars because the Piemaker retired, that's just bad karma. They now make Crumbles which are served a la mode - heck, I'll take "pie" in a bowl... especially when it's served warm with delicious ice cream on top. Slow smoked BBQ! Yep! The family has been brewing and bottling their own BBQ sauce for awhile now and is now venturing into melt in your mouth pulled pork and briskets. Did I mention they make their own BACON?!? And served it nice and crispy atop their breakfast sandwiches. Gotta stop in and give it a try, or a second try if you are stingy with your stars. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices, like timing your hikes, time on the lake, etc. just right to make it in on time...but trust me, it is more than worth it and your belly will thank you for it later! Yes it is pricey, $7 a slice but remember you are 15 miles from a highway and at least 45 miles from any store to get ingredients for great pie. With that being said, get here early as the pies sell out quick! On our last visit we had a slice of Mud pie. The crust was chocolate and amazing, the filling was coffee ice cream with a glaze of chocolate over it and a mountain of whipped cream and walnuts. I can say it was amazing!!! The term "resort" should be used loosly here. The place is a "resort" in my sense of the word, my wife on the other hand describes it as a lodge. I LOVE the rustic feel to this place. Rock Creek canyon is nothing short of magical and whether you are staying in one of the cabins or a campground the place will leave an impression on you for life. AMAZING. The pie is out of this world.....like other reviewers have said, Pricey, but worth it. I am soooooo hesitant to write a review because this place is my santuary, my refuge, my place for serious soul searching. Mmmm pie. Especially after a hike. So good. We got a slice of cranberry/apple(?) pie, blackberry pie, and cheddar pear pie. The cheddar pear was interesting, but not very cheddar-y. The pear filling was really good. The blackberry pie was amazing! And the cranberry/apple (or maybe it was cranberry/cherry... I don't recall) was delicious. Pie was amazing there was 6 of us we had lemon, boysenberry & mud pie and I really couldn't pick my favorite. The boysenberry was a la mode and the lemon was cream, the mud is frozen so each was so different. This is just for the Pie in the Sky restaurant. Especially after coming out of a weekend backpacking in the Rock Creek area, this place is exactly what one would crave: hefty burgers and pies.The best thing about the pies is the toppings to crust ratio is pretty significant. So the toppings are usually spilling out of the pie all over your plate. And even though they keep the crusts pretty thin, it's still perfectly crispy and delicious. My fave pies have been: Pear and cheddar - not overwhelmingly cheesy as one would expect Cranberry and walnuts - perfect amount of crunch Dutch apple - can't go wrong with good ole' apple pie! Blueberry - one of the bf's favorite For the burgers, I really liked the Ortega cheeseburger (with large Ortega peppers, not spicy though!). The bf loves the bacon cheeseburger. They're all pretty generous looking burgers and comes with a bag of chips. Pies are pretty generously sliced too, so you're definitely getting your $7 worth. But get two pies so you can try different ones. They change their pie menus everyday since they're always made fresh. Also come at an odd time if you can. The parking and seating are SUPER limited (seating is just out on the deck with a couple tables). And the line to order your food can get really long, and thus sometimes it may take a while to get your food. Also the earlier you come, the less likely they'll run out of a certain pie! Definitely worth getting off for 10+ miles from the main highway. read more
