I had a "different" sushi meal today. I've been here before (around 2017, I think) and we had a good experience and my daughter loves this place. So I thought I'd do a solo afternoon visit. When I walked in I was surprised by how different the restaurant looked from my visit several years ago. Yes, I know because of Covid-19 tables are spaced apart, but it was dark and empty feeling. The wait staff didn't greet me, I had to walk over to the bar (again, maybe a Covid-19 thing) and ask to be seated. The server came right away to take my order. When I order Japanese food I always start with hot green tea. The server asked did I want sugar or honey....I probably looked perplexed, I'm in my 50s and my grandmother is 100% Japanese, I've never been asked that before. Well when my green tea arrived with a Bigelow teabag I rolled with it and made a mental note that this isn't an authentic sushi restaurant. That's okay, you live and learn. I ordered the ginger salad (something I always order) and the Spider roll. So the salad clearly came right out of a bag and was put in a bowl. No carrots, nothing, just mixed green lettuce. No complaints, it just tasted like the bag salads I eat at home. The Spider roll was okay too, I just thought it was strange that it was filled with the same salad greens I just ate in my ginger salad. Another first! I've never had salad in a sushi roll. The service was great (I tipped 25%) the food was okay. I'll probably only come back if my daughter makes me. read more

This place has a very nice atmosphere...good music and good food! We started off with the ginger salad. The dressing was thicker than what I'm use to but that's ok, it still tasted good. All of the specialty rolls are rock themed. I got the Elvis Roll. It's like a spicy crunchy shrimp that is fried and topped with crawfish and eel sauce. It was spicy but not too spicy and had cream cheese in it (never had sushi with cream cheese before. I was pleasantly surprised). My son got the Jimi Hendrix Roll. I am traveling through town with my dogs and ordered sushi on delivery. The delivery experience with Grub hub was great - I love the constant updates and the $7 fee was worth it to me in this case. I eat a lot of sushi so I have an idea of what things normally cost. I felt this order of a miso soup, a ginger salad, and two specialty rolls was a little high at $31, but once I received it the price was way too high. The $3 miso soup was tiny, more of a side item than a regular soup, and the $3 salad was just lettuce. The two sushi rolls weren't bad, a little too sweet for my tastes but the fish and crab was of good quality. The extras of weak wasabi and tiny soy packets were a little underwhelming. Overall I would look elsewhere next time I wanted sushi here. read more

I ordered a few sushi rolls to go yesterday and was told it would be ready in 30-35 minutes. I arrived at the restaurant 30 minutes later. I waited another 5+ minutes before anyone at the counter acknowledged me. When I asked about my order they said they didn't have an order under that name and asked if I called the wrong store. The employee then realized she had just written my order down on a note pad and never entered it. I was told they would make it right then. I was never offered an apology or a drink while I waited another 45-50 minutes for my sushi. I asked to speak to manager and was told he/she would not be there until 5pm. Unfortunately this is not the first time I have received this type of experience here. A few weeks ago I ordered some sushi for take out and was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. I arrived at the restaurant 20 minutes later and it was not ready. I had to wait an addition 30 minutes while sitting at the bar for the order to be ready. While I was waiting I noticed one other table left because they had been waiting so long. Very disappointed in the customer service at this restaurant. The sushi is great, but it alone does not make up for the poor customer service. read more

The cooks in the back were not wearing their masks, when I asked the manager on duty (red curly hair) I was told "it's not that big of a deal". On top of that our food looked awful and was not correct. The rolls had different ingredients in them then what is on the website. At $10+ per roll this is not what we expected. While visiting Memphis, I was craving sushi. I had never heard of this spot before, but was pleasantly surprised when I entered. Per the name, it had a rock and roll vibe..... from the pictures on the wall, to the names of the menu items.... to the menus themselves! It took me a minute to realize that the menus were album covers!! (Too cute) So anyway, I actually enjoyed the sushi. And I am a crab rangoon snob, but they did not disappoint me. I had a flavor explosion in my mouth with every bite, and my waitress didn't help when she let me sample some dessert! My only comment is that it may have been slightly more pricey than I am used to, but I happily paid for the ambiance, and experience. I will definitely return! read more

Motley crew roll - crawfish roll very good, different from what I have has at other sushi restaurant but very delicious. Eel sashimi 4 pieces - it's a great value for 4 pieces. The pieces are large. Ginger dressing Salad- it's not what I was expecting, the salad dressing isn't the chunky fresh ginger as you usually get from Asian restaurants- rather it is creamy- but it's very good and has a strong ginger flavor. Pretty good. I love Sushi so to be honest when I have a craving, I'll eat what I get and think about it later. That said, it was good!! Especially the Michael Jackson Roll (and that's not just me being a huge fan I'd the King of Pop). It's a tempura roll (which I usually shy away from) and it was so very delicious. The ambience is really cute. I was a little sketchy about my "sushi" place not feeling very "Asian" but I left quite satisfied with my experience. The quality of the food is good, the service is excellent, and with rock and roll albums for menu covers, how can you go wrong? Here's a "shout out" to our server, Mackenzie M. She was friendly, and cared deeply about providing each and every customer the experience that Rock and Roll Sushi has quickly become known for. I have mixed feelings about this place. Our waitress Chandler was nice, she was wearing a mask but her nose and her upper lip were not covered. My food was OK but my husband's food was extremely salty and he couldn't eat it. We definitely won't be back. read more

I came here last week with my boyfriend to pick up an early dinner. We called and placed our order for curbside pickup, and came back 20 minutes later as we were told to do and the food wasn't ready. We waited another 10 minutes for our food, which isn't an big issue. But we paid $35 for 2 orders of fried rice and a salmon roll. For that type of money, I was expecting a good portion size. But when we got home, all 3 items were in a medium sized styrofoam containers. So we were charged $10 for what was essentially a cup of fried rice with a little bit of protein on top. Definitely not what I expected at the price point. If you want to eat fancy sushi that isn't really sushi, this is the place to go. But don't expect much. read more

Even though it wasn't super crowded, our rolls took over an hour to come out, and our soups and salads came out staggered. The waitress also did not write down our order and had to ask us multiple times what we had ordered to make sure she was remembering correctly. If being understaffed/overworked is an issue, maybe reevaluate how you wanna do business. Maybe order at the bar or on an app and just have a food runner? Maybe place a priority on in person orders compared to delivery app orders if the kitchen is backed up. Seems like there are more than just staffing issues here. So my wife and I decided to check this place out...finally. We've seen good and bad reviews for them. As for the bad reviews, I think these were "sushi purists" and their reviews didn't seem to give them a chance. As for any other reason...no place is perfect ALL the time. Might want to go back and give them one more shot at redemption. If you go here looking for traditional sushi, you are probably going to be disappointed. Their menu is basically a really crazy, adventurous, take on sushi and I do mean a "good" crazy take on sushi. My wife grabbed the "Heart Sushi Roll" and I did the "Led Zeppelin Sushi Roll". Traditional? Absolutely not. Good, hell yes! The fried wontons we had before the meal were incredible and we wrapped out the dinner with the "Stairway to Heaven" (deep fried brownies and ice cream). Wow! The atmosphere was great, the food was great, and the service was spot on! Justin came out from behind the bar to talk to us when he found out it was our first time in and I made sure to let him know we WILL be back. I think next time we're going to try the bar. If I had only ordered sushi on my first visit I would definitely be giving Rock N Roll Sushi five stars, however I ordered a side of fried rice and was very disappointed in what we were served. The rice was so oily that it was almost inedible. I've never had fried rice that oily. There were six in our party and everyone's rice was the same. Now the positive! The Crab Wontons were incredible and the sushi was great! I had the Bob Marley Roll and I really enjoyed it. Our table also had the Red Hot Chili Peppers Roll and a Spicy Shrimp Roll. They were all delicious. The Chicken Hibachi looked good but I didn't try any. The rice on the Hibachi plate was oily as well. Be prepared to spend some money as everything is a little pricey but there are lunch prices, however they aren't posted anywhere that we saw. Fortunately our Waitress let us know when we started our orders. If I had know of some of the specials I would have probably ordered different but I had already made up my mind and didn't want to hold up the group by changing my order. All in all I'm leaning more towards a three star review but between how awesome our Waitress was and the fact our Sushi was great I'll stick with four stars, but I am expecting improvement. Large sushi roll Johnny Cash was relatively small compared to other sushi places for the price, but it tasted good. Like the rock n' roll vibe. I ordered it with a yellowtail roll, and it contained salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and octopus. The fish was fresh and the roll generous. The crab Rangoon needs some work. Went by for a quick late lunch today for the first time. We loved it!!!! The crab wontons were the best I've ever had. We ate them so quickly I didn't get a picture. I got the Elvis roll and my boyfriend got the Micheal Jackson roll. So good! I love the batter they use to fry the rolls and the wontons. My two year old daughter was being a typical two year old and throwing fits. The manager sent over crayons and two coloring sheets which was a lifesaver bc I wouldn't have stayed to eat if she kept acting up. The customer service they have is amazing! Went with my roommate and his mom. Let me start off first by saying. I love the way it looks. I also think the cool album menus are a cute touch. I love that there is an outside area for when it's warmer. For an appetizer we had the crab wontons. They were awesome. The crispy outside was nice and fluffy. This hidden gem is tucked in a corner and we just happened upon it but you'd never see it from the road. We recommend this place to so many people just so they know that it's around and we don't want them to ever close. The sushi is incredibly fresh with names that compliment their Rock'n'Roll theme. They have an outdoor seating area as well as a private party room. The art throughout is fun and well done. We'd love to see some more variety in the rolls being offered in the future but overall this is a clean, fun place with great grub! read more

My wife and I went here for a date night as she loves sushi. First off the ambience of the place is nice. The menus are made of old vinyl album covers! However, the food didn't meet our expectations. I got the Hibachi Chicken, and she got a spicy tuna roll and Michael Jackson roll. The Hibachi Chicken was covered in a rather bitter sauce. The rice was also very sticky and got stuck in my teeth. It tasted nothing like traditional Hibachi you can get at Japanese places. My wife advised that the sushi was okay, but you can get better sushi at several different places around town that are cheaper. What is this? I mean aside from awful. The menu is a disaster that's impossible to make sense of and when the "sushi" arrived it was so poorly done that it's a sin to call it sushi. The menu is not even clever like Tommy Lee Roll could be called Tommy Eel Roll. None of it makes sense but all of it is horrible. One of the rolls was plain disgusting. Tommy Lee. I guess they got that one right. We sent this back. It was disgusting. The guy comes up and says "so you guys don't like the filet mignon". Yeah man that's our problem, the filet mignon (ground beef that tastes like dog food) is so good we had to send it back. What a tool. Must take us for absolute morons. I don't usually like to write bad reviews but I had to share ... The sushi here was pretty terrible. We went in with high hopes that perhaps, we had found some tasty sushi in Memphis. Red flag number one- half the rolls on the menu contained cream cheese. Now, don't get me wrong, I can appreciate a Philadelphia roll everyone once in a while but this was a bit much. All could have been excused except for the rice-- oh my goodness the RICE. It was clearly a day old, dry and had the chewiness that almost made this some sushi-mochi hybrid. The fish wasn't fresh and I could taste that it wasn't even though the mask if spicy tuna mayo. Our roll that was fried came out cold and even more chewy than the other. I just can't get over that odd chewy texture of the rolls! Like nothing I've ever experienced. In addition to the two rolls we had a seaweed salad on top of some spring mix topped with what i must assume was hoisin sauce. The seaweed salad was good on its own. I found myself trying to wipe off the way too salty hoisin salt and trying to balance the saltiness with some of the unnecessary spring mix. Our too salty salad was followed by severely over dressed firecracker (fire banger? I don't remember) shrimp. No, I would not like a side of shrimp with my mayo, I'd like to enjoy my shrimp. (Which, was actually pretty tasty once I got past the gobs of mayo sauce) I don't know if we got them on an off day or if they're still getting things together because they're new... maybe we'll try again in a few months .. or a year. read more
