Today, I stopped in for the lunch special. While the roll I got was very tasty, there are a number of things I was a little disappointed with. First of all, there is a lot of parking behind the building, which is nice, but a little confusing to access if you do not know the area. Google actually took me straight to the parking lot, and it took me a few minutes to figure out where the restaurant actually is. Once inside the restaurant, I noticed that the servers were very casual, and a little too laissez-faire for my taste. They weren't rude. They just weren't very mindful of my time constraints, i.e. not walking over when I am clearly waiting to order or pay the bill. It didn't seem very busy either. As far as the food goes: it's typical chain restaurant quality. The miso soup had the consistency and look of old dish water and was pretty much flavorless. The cucumber "salad" was just cucumber covered in soy sauce, vinegar, and sesame seeds. The LSU was actually very tasty, but very small for a $14 roll. Maybe it was smaller because it was part of the lunch special, but it made me thankful that I didn't spend the extra money on a regular roll. I came to this place for lunch and ordered the special for $13 + taxes and includes a salad (home salad with creamy mango dressing is very tasty!!) + soup (miso soup is delicious!) + 1 or 2 rolls depending on what you choose)... it is a Full meal and everything was excellent. Good portions. I ordered LSU roll and it was delicious, avocado, shrimp and salmon... I was very satisfied with it and the dishes are presented in a very creative way. The presentation is beautiful and it tastes fresh. Sushi is usually a little more pricey than other "lunch" options, but definitely this is a good option if you at looking for a nice little place to eat and talk in a nice environment. The hostess advised there would be a 30 to 45 minute wait when she wouldn't seat one person at a four top. I chose then to go to the sushi bar where I was greeted immediately by the sushi chef and 10 minutes later by someone who wanted to know if I had been helped. After realizing the hostess had not advised my server was supposed to great me, I asked to be moved to the four top and again was advised it was for a party of at least two people and it was impossible. I was not comfortable at the sushi bar and pressed without the server budging even after being advised that it was open and there were no reservations or wait, I then asked if there was anywhere else and the waiter immediately spotted a two top I could be sat at. The new server came 10 minutes again after I had been sat and took my drink order, 15 minutes go by and I finally get the cocktail, immediately order because I didn't want to keep waiting, 15 minutes go by and the server advised that the kitchen was backed up so it would be a while, I order another drink and wait, wait, continue to wait, 10 minutes later drink comes, 13 minutes after this the food comes, from order to table this is 36 minutes for food with 5 sushi chefs on staff and the restaurant not incredibly filled with people waiting for their food. 9 minutes later I have finished eating three rolls and no check back from the server. 8 minutes go by and when she comes to pick up my plate I hand her my card immediately, because heaven knows when I would see her again. Overall stay was under 1 and half hour and I ate a total of 9 minutes. $70 bill. One person. Inattentive waiter, bartender, sushi chef and oblivious hostess to the open table. I hadn't been here since a few years before the pandemic. Won't make the same mistake again. Ticket was 6:55 order time and 7:51 cash out. not counting the time I waited to be asked for order. The portion I received at dinner was twice the norm! I can't say that I like their salad dressing, its pineapple mango yuck! Honestly might be the worst experience i've had at a restaurant in a long time, if not ever. Took us over 20 minutes to receive drinks (dirty martini, glass of wine, old fashioned) and they were all brought out at a different times. My friend ordered an old fashioned with buffalo trace (which is on the menu) and was told they were out- understandable, however the waitress was no help in recommending a new or similar bourbon and was completely unfamiliar with the alcohol selection. He then walked to the bar to pick out a new bourbon, where they displayed empty bottles of alcohol that they did not have in stock, when he finally found one that they had available (his 4th choice) he was brought the wrong drink. His old fashioned was barbie pink (also the wrong bourbon), I found a hair in my tuna nachos, and was served a martini in a glass with a chipped rim. No one in our party had black or even brown hair and we found a long black hair in our appetizer, which normally wouldn't be the biggest of deals, however given the other issues it just kinda set us all over the edge. Server was kind but incredibly forgetful and no help at all. Had to ask twice for sauces, and server was basically MIA the entire time. We managed to flag down another server and ask for the manager, who fixed the old fashioned, brought a new martini in a new-un-chipped glass, and re made the tuna nachos. However, the manager, although polite, didn't seem to care or was even apologetic in the slightest. We were surprised we got our bill and noticed that nothing was comped or even discounted. Overall, I will probably only go back to get food to go. I brought a friend here because it was the last night of restaurant week, and I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity. We walked in, and I had no choice but to notice how loud the music was. We were sat at a little table toward the back, and my friend and I had to shout our conversation to each other. Since the music was so loud, everyone in the restaurant had to shout, and so the whole restaurant was just a dinner-long assault on the ears. It was also surprisingly frigid in there too (more on this later). Since we went in for restaurant week, we kept to that menu. We both had the shrimp wontons. They came on a neat little plate and were in a sweet chili kind of sauce. I enjoyed the flavor of these immensely, with my one criticism being that they should be a little smaller to make eating them a lot easier. Besides being cold and and loud, our dinner was off to a nice start. I am not sure exactly what my friend had, but it was a noodle dish with vegetables. It came out probably a good five minutes before my salmon did. That was really weird. I understand that not all dishes take the same amount of time to prepare, but there is generally some kind of etiquette that dictates the food comes out together. Now, while I did not have to wait an upsetting amount of time for my salmon, what happened next was just weird. My plate was cold. Not room temperature, not less warm than is usual. It felt like my plate had been stored in a fridge until about 10 minutes before the put my fish on it. My salmon was hot, it was delicious, but it didn't stay hot (and the side of asparagus was cold before I even got to it). I enjoyed it a good deal. I am not proud of what happened next. I like to be adventurous when I go out to eat. I tried that panna cota with chocolate eel sauce for dessert. I am not an expert in all things eel sauce, but I remembered that it is salty. When I read the menu, I thought that is would be like a chocolate sauce with an interesting flavor added to make it novel. I was WRONG. It was eel sauce that they added a hint of chocolate to. I took one bite, and shuddered. This is literally the only time in my life that I have sent back a dish to be replaced by something else. My waitress was a trooper and brought me out some strawberry mochi which was like some strawberry ice cream in a weird little gelatin ball (I enjoyed it, though my Thai friend told me it wasn't real mochi). Granted, it was one of the busier nights, but there was 10 tables tops and most had already recieved food, so we thought we were in the clear. 30 minutes later...crickets. 15 minutes after that "oh your Sushi will be right out, they are cutting it now." 15 minutes after that...crickets. We ended up confronting the staff to just ask what the deal was, and the response was that they were down a sushi chef and productivity was low....mind you, we were there an hour before when NO ONE was there, but ok. 10 minutes later, manager brings out the food. Makes the same excuse, but we all really know that our server just didn't put in the order and that is really the problem. So we ate our food, and then another round of our same order came out, back to back...hummm, short a sushi chef huh? No. It was lost and now we are two orders lost and 80 minutes later. Not to mention, I am unable to eat raw food at the time, and asked the waiter to clarify with the sushi chef, based on the menu, that the roll I ordered would be fully cooked. They confirmed that everything was cooked in it, and low and behold the roll comes out and I am picking out half of the ingredients on the inside because they are raw. (big issue) Soooo frustrated. Unfortunately, we will not be going back to rock-n-sake. My recommendation would be to go to Ichiban down the road instead for dine in or order take out from Rock-n-skae. If the server and manager owned up to the issue at hand, it would have been an entirely different story--- but nope, we're out. We should know better for a college sushi spot I guess. Hands down, my favorite Garlic Salmon Roll (sushi) that I have ever had. If you love sushi, garlic and salmon, then this dish will rock your world. It was insane. Out of the 3 dishes I tried: garlic salmon roll, octopus salad and the pork belly lettuce wraps. The garlic salmon roll was the head of the class, the cream of the crop and was pretty fabulous. I love this restaurant. The sushi bar is immediately when you walk in, to your right is the bar, seating for dining-in upstairs and downstairs. It is clean and the service staff is super nice. I know there are plenty of sushi spots to choose from in Baton Rouge, but this is one of those that you must try. Their rolls are pretty incredible. Find them off of Perkins Road (by The Big Squeezy & Jimmy Johns). Come for sushi, stay for atmosphere and more sushi. We picked it up on a Tuesday evening and the pick up line was HUGE so keep that in mind during the shut down. My friends were there around 7:30, but we had to hang around at the bar for an hour before we got a table and then by the time we were served and done with the food, it was 10:30! Of course, by then, I had lost my appetite. Which was great because the food was just average. We ordered an assortment of sushi: California rolls, upside down roll, spicy tuna, yellow fin, rock n roll sushi etc. None of them were worth that long exhausting wait. A bunch of years ago I was introduced to sushi at the Benihana in downtown Atlanta. That's a pretty generic place to get started, and didn't really shed much light on what the sushi world is all about. The next place I tried sushi was a slick Atlanta joint called Ru-San's. I only later gathered that Ru-San's was based on a very common sushi template that is still going strong two decades later: The So-Cal-wannabee Americanized sushi place. The original Rock-n-Sake, which opened a few blocks from my then-workplace in New Orleans in the late 90s, is cut straight from that same template. (A big surprise, given the name "Rock-n-Sake"....) It actually had half-way decent sushi, though, as I recall, even if the atmosphere was really annoying. This new-ish Baton Rouge location is pretty similar, with some minor 21st century updates. The atmosphere is slick and clubby and loud, and the clientele, especially at this college-town location, is mostly very young. The music, at least on the night we were there, sounded like an MTV playlist circa 1982 to 1987, as if to evoke some fantastical (and never-ending) '80s SoCal nostalgia. (And as somebody who lived through that dogcrap music back in the day, rest assured that I don't need to hear it again for the rest of my life.) And the sushi is mostly Americanized and cooked--more so than I remember at the N.O. location--which isn't my thing. The menu actually has a little symbol to indicate rolls that actually have raw fish, and probably only about a half dozen out of about 40 specialty rolls actually bear that symbol. The rest are junk-sushi creations that might have been dreamed up for Guy Fieri's latest enterprise, along with a handful of standards like the Rainbow Roll. So why the hell was an apparently grumpy old bastard like me even bothering with such a place? Well, I live in Ohio these days, where good sushi is hard to come by, and I had fond memories of much-better sushi in Louisiana. And we were craving some sushi. And Rock-n-Sake offers a relatively short list of nigiri, sashimi, and old-school rolls with raw fish. We ordered some of this stuff (the basics, like whitefish, salmon, tuna, etc.), and given the rest of the experience, it was very fresh, clean-tasting, well-prepared, and surprisingly good. It is for this satisfying, simple sushi that I bump this rating up to three stars. read more
