I would totally recommend going to Rock Soft Futon. I wanted something sustainable and vegan, and I was in a bit of a time crunch with low resources. John helped me find something he had on discount due to discontinued supplies, and I was able to get my son and I two futon beds, and frames for far more affordable than anywhere else, and these are quality well- made beds. Buying local is also best for sustainability too, I will go back and support John's business when I need my next item, or when I need the futon restuffed. Easy to do business with, fantastic service, fair prices and local! Doesn't get better than that. Interestingly, I didn't buy a futon! I bought 5 custom hexagon shelves for my home office. I had seen them on Etsy and was contemplating purchasing but the shipping cost was prohibitive. While driving down SE Hawthorne I passed Rock Soft Futon and hanging on their wall were hexagon shelves! Kissmit! It was during COVID-19 so I went online and sent an email to the business owner.John replied back that day, gave me his number so we could talk. He told me that in addition to selling futons and pillows, they make these shelves, custom to order, as well as a few other items from the futon wood remnants. I met John at the shop Memorial Day to give him the measurements and depth that I wanted and picked out a stain color. He even let me take the stain samples home so I could pick a shade that blends with my wooden desk and hardwood floors. Two weeks later he called to let me know my shelves would be ready for pick up that Saturday. They were bundled together for easy transport and came with hardware and instructions for hanging. I couldn't be happier! Just waiting for a friend to come over and hang them. Once up, I will post a picture! Now I need to go back and check out the chairs that fold out to a bed for when I have guests. And the decorative pillows that come in all shapes and colors. read more

We were about to purchase a shikibuton online but the shipping prices pushed us the over edge. Luckily we found out about Rock Soft Futon and their custom made futons and shikibutons. We opted for a wool and cotton one, aiming for 5". While it was a bit thicker and heavier than a traditional shikibuton, my partner had a wonderful night's sleep on it. The shopkeeper we worked with was amazingly quick and made the futon mattress on the spot. Took less than 30 minutes. Nice! read more

Overall my experience with this company was good. I called and paid for a bed frame over the phone and was told Id get a call back that day about scheduling a delivery but that didn't happen which made me feel a little weird.. However I called back a day or two later and got some clarification and easily made an appointment for the frame to be dropped off. I was worried it wouldnt be able to fit into my room as it is a very tight hallway and they assured me it would. I asked if a refund would be ok if it didn't and the man said yes. It got delivered though (slightly later than planned) unassembled which was a relief. It was not hard to put together (I do have a drill which helped with slats), probably took me 45 minutes. I love the style and minimal it is. Nothing sticks out from under my mattress because my room is tiny. Thanks for the sweet frame!! read more

I really couldn't be happier with my trip to Rock Soft Futon. Not only was I able to get everything I wanted at a time when inventory was at a low point but I also was able to get it within my price range which was awesome. I would definitely recommend this business to family and friends and be sure to ask for Jay! I think it's a really good idea to browse the website before you go in. There are a lot of options and not all of them are on the floor but if you have a general idea of what you want you should be fine. Especially if Jay is running around, because he is tremendously helpful and really great to work with all around. I went with the Lexington futon frame and one of the higher end futon cushions. Been using it exclusively as a couch and bed for some time now and I gotta say I am very happy. I've been sharing it with my SO and they also have only had good things to say. The price was right where I figure futons typically go for but I did find myself thinking how nice this thing is. I figured I'd have to spend a lot more to get one this nice. Also, they break down to a VERY reasonable size. I mean I was able to load the entire frame and the queen size futon cushion in our rather small KIA Sportage. Putting it together takes time and patience. I think that should be implied but still, be ready because it takes some effort. It's entirely worth it though. If you're in the market for a futon I can't imagine finding a better place. Definitely stop by and at least check it out. I came here after reading all the reviews and deciding that I wanted an actual, NICE bed to sleep on. John did an absolutely fantastic job on my custom sized futon and bed frame. It fits perfectly into the nook I had planned for it, and the futon itself is heaven. Super easy to put together, too! I'm 5'0 and not in great shape, but I was able to carry all the pieces and assemble it myself :) I bought my old bed when I was a teen and as I got into my 20's, it was really starting to affect my sleep because it was too soft. Friends and family questioned it a little bit when I said I was going to look into getting a firm futon instead of a "regular" mattress, but I'm so glad I did. With the bed frame that John made, it's sooooo nice to sleep on. This isn't the kind of bed you would jump on as a kid- it's not bouncy and creaky. What a great experience and what a great product! I figured that a futon sofa would be the best piece of furniture for my office/guest room, but I was worried that it would be uncomfortable. We ended up with a wall-hugger sofa, which is a solid, beautiful piece of wooden furniture that doesn't need to be moved away from the wall when you turn it into a bed, and a very comfortable futon with layers of foam, wool, and cotton. We got a beautiful cover and coordinating pillows and a comforter at a great price. The guys in the store were really helpful and patient, and we paid to have it delivered and assembled, and they did a great job. I got a queen-size futon, so the back is a little higher than a normal couch, but it's so comfortable to sit on and lean against, and it's surprisingly comfortable to sleep on. It is firm but not hard. It's very supportive and cushioning, and I had a great night's sleep on it. And, if the futon starts to get out of shape in the future, they'll refill it for a very reasonable cost! I'm really pleased and I highly recommend Rock Soft Futon. read more

Pretty easy to order a mattress and its a nice quality one at a fair price. Nice levels of selection from basic to premium to wool and various firmness. Shop is small but everything is available to test. Usually takes 1-2 days to build at the warehouse. Warehouse guy was great. I brought my own cover and he put it on quickly, loaded it into my van wrapped in plastic and tied tight. Even gave me the rubber mats to use. No complaints at all. This was my first futon and experience assembling one. Going in to the location and seeing everything on display was a huge help. I appreciated the mask wearing and COVID precautions taken as well. I was able to get a futon that day and get some great advice and service from Jay. What is great about the assembly portion is there is a full video walkthrough on the website that helps really visualize the whole project. After a few hours I had it all assembled and ready to go. Overall I can't recommend this company enough. Incredibly nice, polite and down to Earth staff. I started working from home full-time and took up the smallest room which used to be our guest bedroom. I decided to swap out our guest queen bed and frame for a futon that is now in our 2nd bedroom. My husband enjoys it in his office. I liked that the Riviera futon frame was handmade by themselves. It was easy to put together alone. It feels like good quality wood and not cheaply manufactured. It's minimal and you can stain it to your liking but we kept ours natural. We went with a higher-quality futon mattress, the ultra edge--very comfortable and worth it. Our recent guests told me it felt like they were sleeping in a normal bed and they slept comfortably. We also purchased 2 regular covers for the futon mattress. This was a fantastic mattress. The best futon I have ever owned. I bought it in COVID to set in my truck and it gave me immaculate comfort and quality for these 2 years. It never hardened up or soured in these 2 years and is still soft and oh so comfortable I will greatly miss it. Sadly some folks left it outside and it's got soiled and wet and I haven't been able to revive it despite vacuuming and spraying with bleach and other cleaners. I would need to soak it in the bath tub and then dry it out or something and it's just beyond my wherewithal at the moment. Thank you Mr. Mattress man for making my dreams better. I have purchased three futons from Rock Soft.. The first two have been awesome. This newest one though smells weird. Like chemicals. It has never happened before. I purchased the futon in October and it still stinks in January. Three sets of sheets ruined- the smell does not wash out. I purchased a futon cover with the futon. It stinks too. I have written and got a response, then decided to wait and see if it disspated. It has not, and I wrote the company again a few days ago. I really wonder if it's the Premium that I bought..The other two are Deluxe and dont stink. HELP! read more

I am giving them the second star (instead of just one) because I bought a futon from them four years ago which was comfy and I liked that it was made locally. I remember having some issues with the original purchase with their hours and turnaround time on getting the futon (and maybe even billing issues?), but I try to release bad memories and move on. So... after we discovered the old futon had molded (not Rock Soft's fault - BAD issues with my old house), we went back to buy a new futon, despite the terrible Yelp reviews (the prices seemed right and we were tired of sleeping on the couch.) We got cash because we were nervous about their reputation of double-billing, and showed up at 5:30 p.m., as soon as I could get there after work. The website and the door both said they are open until 6, yet it was dark and the door was locked and there was no explanation. All the memories of bad vibes from trying to purchase the first time started flooding back. We walked away exasperated and went directly over to Woodstock and purchased from Apple Crate Half Price Furniture. I didn't like their futon options quite as well, but the Mattressman was awesome and we ended up getting a great conventional mattress at a great deal with NO HASSLE. I was happy to hand my money over to him. If you don't mind third world "customer service," try these folks, if you have the time and patience to deal with their issues. The old futon was acutally pretty nice. If you care who you support and how they treat their customers, don't go to this place. I will never give them my business again. read more

I just bought a shikibuton full size futon from these folks. It's their most simple style futon and it was $200. I'm astounded at how comfortable this bed is, I wake up everyday feeling like I got the sleep I was meant to be having my entire life. The futon was made with care and is high quality. I have chronic back pain from a soccer injury 10 years ago. I found that sleeping on a futon is ideal, vs and spring mattress or something from a mattress store. The futon's soft yet firm quality allows my back to relax into the cushion without getting into and unnatural position. I have been sleeping on futons for a couple years but never have experienced a futon of this comfort level. It's so soft yet supportive to my back and my shoulder when I sleep on my side. I need to give credit to the employee that helped me choose this Mattress. His name is Mike and I hope anyone buying a futon at Rock Soft has the pleasure of meeting him. His knowledge of futons is solid and he was very kind and engaging when he helped me decide on the right bed. Do not even bother. I went well within the store's hours (and not around lunchtime!) only to find it closed with a "back in 5 minutes" sign. Waited around for 45 minutes, and the sign was still there, no one had come back. Very disappointed in this lackadaisical business ethic and pure disregard for potential customers. I will not be back. The only good thing that came out of it was trying Rovente pizza down the street to kill time while waiting for them to never come back. If you're looking for organic or sustainably made futons, try Cotton Cloud. From looking at prices in Rock Soft Futon's window, Cotton Cloud is cheaper too (which is not saying much for them as both places are insanely expensive). The people at CC were at least more helpful without being stalkerish. And, not to mention, open when they say they will be! read more

He sold me a premium replacement futon cover to replace a torn one from the nineties and the sleek, rich texture was worth an extra 50 bucks at least, with the added convenience of 3 sided zipper opening for easy cleaning and rotating. Just bought an Ultra Edge mattress and frame from these guys. It's a good mattress, though I'm not used to sleeping on futons and my back hurts like a mofo. Nice to buy a locally made product, and I'm glad it has a lifetime warranty. Hope that's legit if something happens to the futon. Star gets docked for their customer service, though. The lady working the store was entirely uninterested in helping customers or answering questions, seemed kinda irritated that we were in there, and didn't seem to know much about the products. Delivery wasn't available for about 10 days, and we needed a bed immediately, so we were going to try to get it home in our car, and ability to do so was a deciding factor in making the purchase. When asked if the boxes for the unassembled futon frame would fit in a sedan, she was like "Oh yeah, totally, sure, people fit them in sedans all the time." When we went to pick up the frame, the guy working the warehouse was shocked to see us pull up in a sedan, because the frame box is... much bigger than a car. There is no way anyone has ever fit one of those boxes in a car. So we had to go rent a UHaul to get it home; goodbye $40, thanks for the bad info, Disaffected Storefront Lady. read more

I bought a futon and frame from here and paid to have it delivered about $620. About 1 year after purchase, the frame cracked. The frame is covered under the "limited warranty" to "be free from defects in workmanship and materials for life." While "replacement parts and labor are free of charge" the company expects the customer to bring the frame into the store. If anyone has tried to move a queen futon frame by themselves you can imagine how awkward and difficult it is. This does not include the fact that futon frames do not fit in most cars. This is the exact reason I paid extra for delivery. Please update the policy on this and customers beware, make sure the company agrees before you buy to pick up the futon at their cost if it breaks. read more
