Well executed. I have heard that the place has a reputation for long waits, but that was not my experience. We placed a takeout order for a pizza and a few other items on a Saturday afternoon, and everything was ready within about 40 minutes. In terms of the operation as a whole, it seems like things were very well run. Everyone in the restaurant had a role, and everyone was on the ball in terms of taking care of customers. In terms of the pizza, it was good. The pizzas they serve are very much what I understand to be in the New York style. Large, foldable slices with a relatively thin crust. The crust has a nice chew but it certainly isn't crunchy. I particularly enjoyed the ratios of crust to sauce to cheese. Everything seemed to be nicely aligned. My only advice would be to consider picking up a few slices rather than a whole pizza. The slices are pretty big, and the turnaround on ordering them is quick. In terms of some other items on the menu, everything was fine. Their primary focus is on the pizza, so everything else is secondary. We ordered a green goat salad, and it was generally fresh and nicely presented. We also ordered a vegan hoagie, which comes stuffed with broccoli rabe and artichokes. The hoagie was extremely well done, with nice bread and nicely considered filling. Taking the vegan route didn't seem like a compromise at all. Overall, this is a great destination. Our second stop on our 8.2 crew tour of Pittsburgh. This is a new location from where portnoy did his review. We got there around the lunch and it was busy ( which is always a good sign ) lots of rock and roll memorabilia and some old school video games. We ordered a whole plain cheese pie ( 35 min wait .. which seemed really reasonable). They also sell by the slice with little to no wait, which seemed great for lunch If this was the only 8.2 we had it would have been amazing. First time visiting since they moved to their new location. We walked in and placed an order to dine in. The wait for to go's was 3 hours+ but we were told dine in takes priority. We weren't sure how long we'd have to wait but the pizza came out rather fast, I'd say maybe 20 mins. They have a few booths and tables inside, ample seating is available. Ot was getting busy as it's the night before Thanksgiving and a home Pens game and Pitt VB game. It is byob and they sell cans of soda and water. I'm a staple at Rockaway Pizzeria and truly enjoy their pizza. I'm from upstate New York, and this is hands down the best I have had in Pittsburgh. They make perfect New York style pizzas and even great Sicilian pizzas. Most of the time you order at the counter, bring your own drinks, and enjoy your food while you sit and eat. The service is usually pretty chill. You order at the front and they'll bring your food to your table, or you can order at the front to go and it's typically ready in about 45 minutes. My last experience threw me off, which is the only reason this is not a five star review. When I called, they told me they weren't taking orders over the phone, so I decided to go in and order. I told the person at the counter that I wanted a box of pizza to go. He told me they weren't doing to go orders and that I had to sit down and eat. I explained that I was just one person and asked if I could simply get a box and package it myself once the pizza came out. He explained that I had to sit and eat a slice or two before I could get a box. I was confused but agreed because I really wanted the pizza. While waiting, I noticed the person behind me order his food to go, and then I saw another couple do the same. At that point I realized something wasn't right and mentioned it to him. He told me he was given the wrong information and thought they weren't allowed to do to go orders. It was frustrating, but I let it go. This was the only odd situation I've ever had here. Every other visit has been great and I've always been able to order to go without any issues. Overall, I really do love this place and it remains one of my favorite spots in Pittsburgh. Writing an update to my review since I can't respond to the owner's comments. BOTH full pies we ordered and the 3 single slices we ordered were all burnt on the bottom. I did not complain/bring this up to anyone who worked there as I assumed by the consistent quality that this was on purpose. Perhaps I'm not on with the the new trends in pizza now and this is now a thing? My order was not to go, we sat and ate inside the store. I did not "lie" and say there were health code violations, just commented that it was sticky and dirty. Overall, I wanted to like this place, especially due to the hype and due to the quality of the Hemlock House across the street which is under the same ownership. Alas, this is not the place for me. We stopped by yesterday around 7pm. We didn't have any problems finding street parking nearby. The inside has a bunch of tables and booths but we saw most people seemed to do takeout. You order at the counter up front and they bring the pizza to your table if you're dining in. They sadly only had slices of the Sicilian for we got one of those and one recommended A Slice of Ice and Fire pizza. Both were excellent and the pizza was HUGE. We definitely took home leftovers. OMPizza! This is literally my favorite pizza shop in Pittsburgh. They moved from their White Oak location to Regent Square (of course after I move out of Regent Square as well as out of Pittsburgh in general). However, I was lucky enough to swing by on my last visit home. I am happy to report that the pizza is as incredible as it's always been. Dare I say better? I was missing it something fierce. They use fresh ingredients always. They get so busy, I mean so busy and often run out of food. THAT IS HOW GOOD IT IS! So if you're wanting to get some in, get there early and be patient. I've been to the new Rockaway location a few times since they have re-opened, but this is the first time I've gotten a full pie. My partner and I decided to try the vodka pie, and I couldn't recommend it more. The vodka sauce was flavorful with a slight kick. I love the thinner New York style crust and think it has a great flavor and even better chew. Since I ordered pick-up I can't speak too much to their service, but in the past I've had great service. While the slice line was long, it definitely moved fast. If you are on the fence to try Rockaway then hopefully this review is what pushes you to go. Rockaway Pizza has taken over the old Square Cafe, bringing its unique blend of pan and specialty style pizzas. 3 of us split their Grandma Pie (thin-crust pan pizza with mozzarella, tomato sauce, garlic, basil, olive oil, sesame seed bottom), while our other friend enjoyed a sizable pepperoni slice. Get there early, they do a ton of call ahead and carry out business. We placed our order by 6:15, and by 7:00, they were completely sold out of both pies and slices. Man, I was so excited to try this place and the experience just did not live up to the reviews. First, the pizza is great, plain and simple, it's great food. Everything else? Possibly the worst experience I've had at a pizza place. Ordered takeout in person and was told an hour and 10 minute wait. Totally fine! We expected this based on the reviews. Walked around the area, got a beer and showed back up after an hour knowing we'd be a few minutes early based on what we were told. Well, that was a flat out lie. We sat in there for nearly another hour. It took an hour and 50 minutes for our pizza to come out. After about 30 minutes, so 20 past the time we were told, I asked about how much longer they thought. And when I asked, both the workers asked for my name and sounded like they'd never heard it, like my ticket wasn't up there. After another 10 minutes, the woman behind the counter said "it'll be right out" all but confirming the suspicion I had of it not even being on the line. Came out after an hour and 50 minutes, a worker in the back handed it to me as the two behind the counter just sat there with their heads down not wanting to make eye contact. The worst part is that people who sat in got their pizzas in 30-40 minutes, ate a slice or two, got a box and left. Like they knew how to get it faster. Really want to give this place another try based on how good the food was, but I can't imagine trying to get takeout again. read more

Updating my review to help other customers set their expectations and possibly avoid the same disappointment. I think the pizza is good...if you can get it. Since we were coming to Regent Square for an event, I suggested we grab slices to go to take with us. (Note: not all menu options are available as a slice so it's whatever is available that day). It was 7:30 pm on a Saturday in January and the staffer at the counter politely shared they were done for the night (I'm assuming done making only slices but since we didn't want a whole pizza I didn't ask if I could still order one). They close at 9 o'clock. I really like the pizza so next time, I've learned to have a backup plan or only try it if it's a weekday before say 4 o'clock to have a better chance of scoring seemingly limited daily production. This is the only Pittsburgh pizzeria that I'm aware of that "sells" out for the day so just a heads up to plan accordingly. read more

I had a good overall experience at Rockaway, with some pluses and minuses. I don't typically get the Sicilian, so I decided to go with the six slice 16 inch(I think) with pepperoni. Rockaway makes this thing called an upside down Sicilian. They must look a bit silly hanging upside down like that. All joking aside it is cheese first then sauce and toppings is what they explained to me. He said that this is the only way you can have it. I was kind of surprised by that, but I still went with the Sicilian. When I got the pizza it didn't look like the sauce was on top, huh, strange. When I ate it I found out that there was not much sauce, just tomatoes and basil lingering in with the cheese. I love basil, so there was nothing wrong with that. O.k., so here are the pluses and minuses. The pizza is tasty and there is lots of it. The Sicilian I found to be very filling. I could only eat two and a half slices and I usually eat 3-5. The crust is light, airy and has a nice crunch. It actually kind of reminds me of focaccia bread that became a pizza. The minus is that it is messy and very greasy. Also, the pepperoni is thick and they pile it on(great), but quite a few of them are sort of dried out and sad looking. The music in the restaurant was cool punk music, trip hop ala Massive Attack, but then some 60's music. It is very much a rock theme. They have the first Mortal Kombat arcade game which is awesome, but they lose points because the game next to it doesn't work. I also realized how pitifully terrible I am at playing old school Mortal Kombat. To be fair the old arcade MK's are very difficult. With all of that being said their pizza tastes amazing and it is actually highly addictive. I had a few more pieces for lunch and I couldn't stop eating them. I can see what the hype is all about. Their 18" NY Pie is the best cheese pizza in Pittsburgh. Thin, crispy crusts that holds its own against pizzas from NYC. Great undercarriage, a little funk (good) to the dough, the sauce is excellent and the cheese has a great finishing bite to it. All blending together harmoniously. I think they've got some stuff to figure out still operationally given the new location an recent buzz, and I'm hoping that expansion will never mean less quality because this pizza is worth every penny and any distance in the greater Pittsburgh area to travel! Nostalgic feel when you walk in. It's a walk up and order at the counter and find a seat setup. Family friendly. We had the hot honey with pepperoni and ricotta. You CANNOT customize at all which was not a huge deal but it would have been a nice option. The pizza was huge and delicious. We also had the Cesar salad which came with anchovies and lemon. Rockaway continues to be a consistently excellent choice, and the only legitimate choice whenever my family (we are all natives of NYC) wants pizza. When I order from Rockaway, I order the 18" New York pie. And it's exactly how I like it. Thin and crispy crust, well done, some char, some bubbles and foldable! Has San Marzano tomatoes and very high quality cheese that you won't get anywhere else in Pittsburgh. They use the same ingredients, at the same high quality as the best pizzerias in NYC do (DiFara, Lucali, etc.. aka two of the best in the world). It comes together in Rockaway's kitchen as the best pizza one can ever have in Pittsburgh, and as time goes by and they refine their process, this pizza joint will put Regent Square on the map as a pizza destination. There are some that complain about Rockaway running out of pizza as though that's a bad thing. Great pizza like this is a first come first serve event. It's part of the experience. This is a special pizza, with special ingredients and a special process. When it's gone for the day, it's worth waiting for the next day. I've never been anything but extremely happy with Rockaway Pizzeria. 90 minute waits only tell me that I'm not the only one. Epic pizza. Pittsburgh is fortunate to have this! read more

One of the most hyped (re)openings in Pittsburgh in the past decade, so I showed up mildly skeptical as well as intrigued. Surpassed the hype! I'm not ashamed to admit I got a food erection during my meal. Have been back another 3 times since it's grand reopening in Regent Square, and every bite of every order has been equally pornographic. As a born and raised New Yorker (Park Avenue, but I blend in with the commoners) I can be an insufferable pizza snob... but color me IMPRESSED AND THRILLED. Rockaway serves some of the best pizza I've ever had ANYWHERE. My favorite slices so far: Grandma's with Vodka Sauce and Pepperoni Sicilian. I've heard the hype of Rockaway pizzeria for years, but I just finally tried it last week. I called for a takeout order around 8 pm on a Tuesday and my pie was ready 25 minutes later. Even though their menu is pretty innovative, I wanted my first try to be a simple round pie with pepperoni and green peppers. When I stopped in to pick up my order, the staff was very sweet and helpful (also forgot to mention that the staff was very kind over the phone when I placed my order!) anyways, by the time I got home (20 min later) my pie was still warm. I saw some other reviews complain about the price of the pizzas, but in my opinion, it's a fair price for the size of pizza you get. I can also tell they use quality ingredients which are also not cheap. I'm happy that Rockaway moved to Regent Square because it makes it more attainable to me. Well, we're spoiled for good for pizza now. This is absolutely a cut above anything we've had in Pittsburgh. If we'd closed our eyes, I'd swear we were back in NYC. We've been daunted since it's opening by 3-4-hour waits as of 4pm (!!), but on a rainy day this week, at about 5:15pm, my husband and I decided to dine in. Success! Not much of a line (and surprisingly, the "pick up" wait - according to the poor woman who was stuck answering the nonstop phone - was just 1 1/2 hours!). We brought some beer with us (it's a BYOB establishment), which the lovely woman who took our order said she'd put in a bag in the fridge for us. Our salad - the Green Goat came out first. We decided to eat it directly out of the bowl, as we wanted to save our (very thin) paper plates for the pizza. The salad was great -- so fresh; the spinach & red onion were accompanied by a generous portion of flavorful, goat cheese, shaved, almonds, roasted red peppers, & what appeared to be a homemade raspberry vinaigrette. That salad is HUGE - so beware, it will dent your ability to consume the main event!! A bit later (maybe 35 mins into our stay), our pizza --- the White (the first one, not #2) -- came out. WOW. Gorgeous to look at - a giant, 18" work of art. The crust edges golden and a bit charred in places. There was no shortage of ricotta, mozzarella, and roasted San Marzano tomatoes. It was piping hot, but we soon tore into it. Holy melt-in-your-mouth! There are hardly words. Even the leftovers the next day were fantastic reheated in the oven on a pizza stone. Just do yourself a favor and go EARLY, get a table, relax and enjoy. This is the real deal and so worth the wait. Can't wait to return. read more

Let me start by saying that I've been a loyal customer here for many years, and I truly love your food. The upside-down pizza is one of my favorites, and I order it often. That said, tonight I was disappointed by how the situation was handled. I was confident in what I ordered and my understanding of how many slices it typically includes. When I questioned it, I was told on the phone that I was incorrect and that it would be 12 slices. I accepted that response, assuming that perhaps things had changed due to how busy you were. When I arrived, I was then told it was actually six slices, and the blame was placed on me. While standing there, I also overheard a comment directed toward the person who took my order that made me feel uncomfortable and dismissed. I left feeling defeated--not because of the food, but because of the experience. It's not always about the product; it's about how people are treated in the moment. That said, I will continue to support your business because I know your culinary team works hard and takes pride in what they do. They simply prepared the order as it was given. Going forward, simply repeating the order and the price during the phone call would go a long way in avoiding misunderstandings like this. What a great find! Went here with my husband on a cold, but sunny Saturday afternoon. Had been wanting to check this place out for a while and finally got the chance. The guy at the counter was very welcoming and helpful. We decided to try a slice of Sicilian and order a traditional New York style pie with prosciutto and mushrooms. Both were delicious! I loved the old school, "nothing fancy" vibe of the place with a walk up counter, booths, and tables. No alcohol is available, but there are other soda and bottled water options. First of all, you can only buy a 20 inch pizza. Also, if you want a slice, it's whatever they want to sell you. You don't have a choice of your own. My son and I ordered a 3 topping pizza and 2 drinks, it was $45. The worst "New York Style" I've ever had!! The bottom and the crust were slightly burnt.
