The pros of this place are the staff and the ambiance. It is a nice space and staff was very friendly and attentive. The problem - the food. Which is a pretty big strike out if you are a restaurant. I had a Greek Salad with chicken and it was anything but Greek salad. It was iceberg lettuce with some chopped onions and a couple of olives. There was cheese on it but it didn't taste like feta perhaps because the dressing they gave it was a cream mixed with balsamic vinaigrette. The whole thing was all wrong. Perhaps it is good for seafood; I don't know because we all had land food and nobody liked their meal. Avoid. read more

We had tried Rockin' Fish when it first opened and there was a basic lack of flow - server forgot utensils etc - but we wanted to cut them some slack bc they were very new. Last night 4 of us stopped in for dinner. Our friend Ron ordered the Rockin' Fish salad with chicken. When he got it, the chicken was rancid. He didn't need to taste it, but if he had tried it there's no doubt he would have gotten sick. He sent it back, good-natured as always, and ordered the salad again, this time with beef "medium rare." What he got was the salad with shrimp! Shocking, but he said he'd eat the shrimp. Meanwhile my wife ordered bronzino and (in a fish restaurant!) it was the worst she's ever had. It was tasteless! On top of that it was supposed to be grilled, and it was pan-fried. The vegetables were equally tasteless. None of this was reported to the server, who never even asked how it was. Ultimately the server took the salad off the bill, but was remarkably unapologetic about our friend Ron's bad experience. This review is for a fantastic experience my hubs and I had last summer on our last day on Long Island. We had been there a couple of weeks and wish we had come earlier so to have spent more time there (but we were staying on the south shore). The outdoor seating area was lovely. The food was good (the gazpacho could have been better but the oysters were great and they're not usually something I'd really enjoy). Mainly it was so great because during pandemic times it was a lovely outdoor setting where they let us stay for as long as we wanted. Food was good (not amazing but well done) and drink selection great. Ambiance of shabby chic was fun and it was a cozy spot to stop on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Very little accommodation made for kids so I'm mainly reviewing because I disagree that this place is "good for kids". Asked for a half portion of fish and chips for a child (meal is literally two pieces of fish not exactly hard to halve- a burger or other item I get that it's tough to do) and we were refused with an unexpected degree of hostility with no other options provided other than to order a 3 year old a full portion of food. Did we work around it? Sure... I don't mind being flexible especially in going out with kids but it overall ruined the experience for us. read more

A new spot on Main st! We sat outside on a nice summer evening. I usually don't like sitting outside in restaurants because it seems like you can get forgotten by the wait staff. Not at this place. Service was first rate. I think they had more servers outside then inside. Our server Lauren was excellent. She made some really good suggestions on the menu items. that worked out well They have a bunch of beers on tap. The food, Rock shrimp, battered, deep fried. Steak for 2, we split it 3 ways and had plenty left to take home. It looked like something Fred Flintstone would have eaten. I really wanted to like this place!! Really, Really, I did! We came alllllll the way from Bethpage last night to celebrate an anniversary and we went through a lot of rain to get there. The rain stopped before we got there and we decided to sit outside. They brought out cushions for us which was nice as the seats were a little wet. It was really crowded & loud inside so we're glad we got to sit outside. The night started out rough with two dirty water glasses. They were replaced later on, but still, not a good start. We had baked clams to start which were just ok. Very mushy, but with a good bacon flavor at least. Tasted almost like mashed potatoes. Then I had the shrimp tempura wrap and a side of truffle fries. The shrimp tasted like it was freezer burned. The crab on top and hot sauce was too overwhelming. The truffle fries were pretty flavorless and soggy (if you want good ones go to Sapsuckers). My husband had the classic burger. It was piled with fried onions. It is supposed to be an organic burger. He said it had a very bad/weird aftertaste. His stomach still hurts this morning from it. Wow, I came here from Nevada as part of the line-crews helping to restore power to Northport and Smithtown after Huricane Sandy. They stayed open during the storm and I was able to stop by after working all day for some much needed food and drink. Rockin Fish had the best selection of craft brews in the area. Everyting from IPAs to Stouts, and a few specialty beers such as pumpkin ales that were very tasty. Yes, I tried them all! (sampler available). The food was very tasty but the thing I liked the most was the great service! They were all extremely friendly and made me feel like I was at home drinking a beer with my friends. My husband and I happened upon this place a few weeks ago, and we were pleasantly surprised by the food, the ambiance, and the service. It was great to think we could have another great restaurant in town... but then the bubble burst. We sat outside on Friday night Sept 7 to watch the Warrior Welcome Parade, we thought we hit the lottery to have such great seats at such a great place, on such a beautiful evening. The food was okay, definitely not good. The bisque and the french onion soup were bland and boring, however the raw oysters and clams were fabulous, as was the watermelon salad. The stuffed artichokes were dry and tasteless, and I don't think they could technically be called "stuffed" if they've not been stuffed with anything. There were some random burnt bread crumbs sprinkled on top, and some cheese and olives in the center, but they definitely weren't stuffed. Again, the food was okay. Our problem wasn't with the food. I had a half of my drink left when we paid our bill, at which time the table was being set up for the next turnover while we were still seated. I thought this in itself was rude, to not wait for us to leave. Although I asked for a plastic cup for my drink so that I could give up my table, apparently the cups had been misplaced. But the hostess wanted our table and didn't really care that I had yet to finish my drink, so she placed the menus down for the group awaiting our table and told my husband and me that we had to leave. It was quite appalling. I can think of 10 different ways this hostess could have addressed the issue, but she opted to be unmannerly and outrageous. I explained that I still hadn't finished my drink, and I was shocked by what she was doing. In all of my dining experiences, from burger joints to fine dining, I have never experienced such blatant rudeness. It seems that Rockin Fish doesn't care to start off on the right foot, nor do they care how they treat their customers. Never again. read more

Great place for lunch! They were super accommodating when it came to splitting either an appetizer or an entree. Really enjoyed the crab cake sandwich. The fries it came with were fresh and crispy. Came with cheese on both sides of the roll which was an awesome bonus. Only complaint was the mussels were in a tasty sauce but I wish that they had been soaked in the sauce a little longer to make it a little less fishy in flavor. read more

Let me start by saying that I REALLY want to love this place, and am somewhat saddened by the fact that this is a two star review (because it should (and could easily) be a four star review). The Good: The decor, beer selection, location, and appetizer / bar food selections are all excellent. It is the only fancier bar in the downtown Northport area with a decent beer selection. It is new, and thus the space has been recently renovated with a nautical-ish theme, and it is nice. It has about 15 or so taps that have a good craft beer selection (although they could get some more "less-mainstream" beers), and the calamari and tuna tacos are ridiculously good. In my experience it is somewhat rare to find a location that serves craft beer and restaurant quality food at 11 PM... so they get points for that. The Ugly: They just do not have their stuff together. I have been there to eat four times now, and every time the service is slow, and the wait staff is seemingly clueless. This is acceptable sometimes, because all places have bad nights, but it seems to be a recurring theme here. Mind you this establishment is not cheap. $30 entrees and $8 beers.. par for the course when paired with exceptional service... but when they make mistakes, serve slow, and then do not make up for it by comping a round of drinks, it becomes a considerable draw on the overall experience. In my last visit, I was there with a group of six and the place was about half full. Took the waitress 15 minutes to come over to us to take our drink order. Ten minutes later the bartender was not even pouring our beers. Thirty minutes for six beers is not acceptable. The food came out a decent speed, but my wife's dish (tuna two ways) was overly slathered in spicy wasabi sauce. Raw and seared fish should be served with a hint of sauce, as to preserve the natural flavor of the meat. This was excessive. The sad part of it all is that the owner is an excellent chef and owns another restaurant not to far away the consistently produces knock-out dishes.. so I do not know what is wrong with this place. Final thoughts.. I seem to be consistent with some other reviewers. I hope they take notice to these reviews and apply a little TLC, because it could easily be the best bar in town. read more

I created an account just so I could post this review: We went Sat night (9/22) with some friends. As a Northport resident we wanted to give it a shot. I checked yelp before I confirmed that's where we were going and I was a little scared from the overall negative comments. "Oh what do they know..probably some impossible to please people!" was how I dismissed it. Anyway, we get seated and it is TIGHT. Nice looking place but even pushed in, my chair was hitting the back of the chair behind me. With everyone right on top of you, it is also LOUD so expect that. So I get ready to order a cocktail but no, only beer and wine. To their credit there is an extensive beer list (they even have flights so you can sample). OK, whatever, we are with friends and we are having fun. Time to order. My wide & I order a cup of French Onion soup. Have to say this was the highlight of the night. Portion was just the right size for an app and it was tasty (baguette almost had a crunch to it). Again, it really was an excellent soup. Unfortunately the fancy blue square dinnerware it was served on was so chipped with white spots that you get nervous that porcelain is in your soup! This was for both my wife & I. Plates should have been thrown out... Other app was fried calamari. Batter had zero seasoning and the marinara(?) had zero flavor as well. Disappointing. For the entree, the server recommended the Branzino so I got that and my wife (who does NOT like or eat any fish) ordered the Ribeye. When the Branzino came I couldn't believe it. Usually it is served lying on it's side so you can scrape the meat and leave the underlying skin/scales. This was served crosscut on top of the mashed potatoes like the fish was still swimming. Maybe that's the chef's unique take on the dish but it looked bizarre and was bizarre in terms of practicality since any bones or scales have no place to go but in your mashed potatoes? WTF?!! My wife's ribeye that was ordered medium had to be sent back because it was blood red rare. It was served with a heap of fried onions but they had the same flavor as the calamari -NONE. The steak didn't even have much flavor. Our friends ordered the scallops (looked too well done to me) and the tuna. They said the scallops were "meh" but the tuna was really good, The bill was about $210 w/ TIP. Way too expensive for what we got. It has taken me a few visits to get a review together for this much anticipated new eatery here in Northport. Let me start by saying that the decor and ambiance do not disappoint! It has a cool/hip vibe and the bar is gorgeous. When the weather is right, outside dining is truly relaxing and pleasurable. A welcomed departure from the typical spots on Main Street in this charming seaside village. As you can see from other reviews... opinions are mixed. In my previous visits I found the food a little hit or miss but remained hopeful for two reasons. First, in the 2 years it took for this place to come together (permits, building etc) my anticipation for a winner on Main Street that had great food and was affordable affordable enough to visit regularly, may have been set unrealistically high. My second reason for remaining hopeful for Rockin Fish was my faith in knowing that the head chef/owner is a remarkable cook and has served me some of my favorite meals at his other establishment, Crossroads. After now having eaten there 4 or 5 times, my opinion is that they are on the right road for success. I think that some of the kinks of opening a second restaurant, running a second kitchen and developing a menu that is unique to this eatery are well on their way to being worked out. A couple of the hits I have had in the past are the Scallops and Watermelon Salad. Today I had a Cod BLT that was ridiculously good. Fish was crisp, tasty and not at all greasy. The staff is always friendly and I will surely be back time and time again. If you haven't been, give it a try.... if you have and it fell short, give it another try before you make up your mind. Not your typical "northport restaurant" What I mean by that is, many northport restaurants are all store bought frozen junk that some local skell heats up with a smoke in one hand and a shot of knock off Jameson in the other. Always great specials here. Presentation of dishes could be cleaner but the flavor is always spot on. Service is consistent. Which in this day in age is always an issue. I would never have thought of Rockin Fish as so polarizing a restaurant. I'm not one of those "visit once and write a review" type Yelpers when it comes to restaurants, because I do want consistency, and I've always gotten it with Rockin Fish. I'm surprised others haven't. Two things that certainly are accurate: this place is very busy and it's not very large. So yes, if you can't handle a crowd and you want to get a drink, eat an app, wolf down dinner and be out of the place in 40 minutes, I would not go here. Are there people who are really in that much of a rush, though? Not to say the service is slow, it's just paced. I don't think I've ever had a problem with it. I'm also surprised so many folks didn't enjoy the food. I don't think I've ever ordered the same thing twice there, as I'm always looking to try different things, and I've enjoyed everything. The tuna nachos are very well executed, a nice dish. The calamari is crispy and always cooked right. They had an appetizer special of fried zucchini sticks which were tasty. The wings are killer - a different take because they are served dry with both the buffalo sauce and the blue cheese on the side, I like it because you can really taste the juiciness of the dark meat chicken. The cucumber salad is a nice fresh take on a veggie salad, lightly dressed but flavorful and a hint of an asian flair. I had the burger once and enjoyed it, I love their style of french fries too. Also recently tried their 50/50 burger which was half short rib and half italian sausage, topped with roasted peppers and mozzarella, it was decent, the sausage kind of overpowered everything so it essentially tasted like a sausage and peppers hero. I probably wouldn't get it again but I wouldn't call it a failure. Marks for creativity. The bar always has an amazing selection of draft craft beer, and perhaps one of the coolest features is their vertical of Silver Oak Cabs - their cellar is stocked with various vintages dating back through the 90's of both the Napa Valley and Alexander Valley SO's. Very few places can boast that feature. Rockin Fish has always been consistent for me and has always come through. It's not the cheapest meal you'll ever have but it certainly doesn't break the bank. Plus when you combine the cozy atmosphere along with the option to eat al fresco in the alley, along with the overall charm of strolling Main St in Northport, I'd recommend it highly. read more

Another nice Northport eatery, although those seem to be few and far between. It's the only place is Northport with a great craft beer selection, and the flights are always delicious. It's nice when they do seasonal flights as well. Sitting outside during the summer can't be beat. The food is AWESOME. The portions are huge and the quality is fantastic. Is it pricey? Yes, but for what you get, it is well worth it. The waitstaff has always been kind to us anytime we have gone there. The one downside is the size of the place. It isn't terribly big, and I understand that places in Northport have a finite amount of time to really make their money, but they try to fit too many people in at one time. Odds are, if you are inside, that your seat will be up against the seat behind you. Eliminate 3 tables and this place is mint. read more

Great food and cool spot! This place is small but has an intimate vibe and a fantastic oyster selection. The blue point oysters are a must try along with the sake shooters. They have a very nice beer menu and wine list as well. Rockin Fish always has an extensive specials menu with really interesting fresh items. For appetizers try the yellowfin tuna chili, the wedge salad, OYSTERS of course and the truffle fries. Entrees..the short ribs are amazing - they fall right off the bone, are not too fatty and the sauce is the perfect compliment. The scallops fra diavolo is also an excellent choice but be prepared for a huge boat-sized (literally) portion. Check them out! read more

The tuna tacos were minuscule on limp chips. Others had burgers which were ok. Overall it's a nothing restaurant which is thriving only by its location. After my third, and last visit, I felt that I needed to leave a review. There are so many things I've noticed about this establishment: The stale, cheap bread, the horrible service, and the quality of the food. The high priced, tasteless food does not make up for the prices we pay and the poorly trained staff that we tip. After my family and I were seated and brought stale cranberry? bread, it took a good 20 minutes for my server to come take our drink order. He finally, taking his sweet time, brought our drinks and quickly disappeared before we could tell him that we wanted to order. It was incredibly frustrating knowing that our server that we eventually would have to tip was obviously ignoring us. As for the food, when it finally came out, it is mediocore for its price. I swear it was frozen and simply heated in cheap sauce. I don't know how they do it at the other restaurant, Crossraods, but the meat is so dry and the sauces cant cover up the bad quality of the poultry and the meat. Lastly, probably the most outrageous, I witnessed the staff take fries off the customers dishes. How crazy is that? We are paying sky high prices for small portions, and the waitstaff that we tip are stealing our food! I happened to look up at the right moment to see a group of workers grabbing fries off a plate. They didn't even look guilty about it. They were a group of young boys, maybe high schoolers and they seemed proud stealing our food. Great management. Took my wife here last night. We had a great "date night " experience. We got to the restaurant around 8pm. We were told that there was a small wait. By the time we sat at the bar, tried to decide what to drink from the expansive craft beer menu and looked at the specials on the big chalkboard, our table was ready. Service was really top-notch. It's was like every employee was the owner. Seriously, the hostess, bartender. waiter and busboys were so friendly and helpful. Even if the food was crappy I would probably still go back because of the staff. Well,the food was awesome. We started out with raw clams and oysters. The clams were perfect plump and clean. The oysters had a couple of pieces of shell but were otherwise very good. We then shared an arugula salad. It was more then enough to share. Very fresh salad. My wife ordered lobster tacos. A previous reviewer stated that she didn't like them. It just proves that different people see things very differently. My wife loved them. They were light and well done. My entree was the soft shell crab special. It was unbelievably good. Well prepared. We didn't do dessert because we were too full but I did eyeball a piece of apple pie on a table near us that looked nice. I am giving 5 stars because the overall experience really earned it. The fresh and creative menu easily makes this the best restaurant in Northport Village for hipsters, foodies, and those in the know. The vibe is part Manhattan and part Hamptons. Service was quick and attentive. Food was excellent. I made a meal out of their crispy Fried Clam Strips (which they make themselves and don't just fry out of a frozen bag), paired with their Truffle Fries which are served topped with Parmesan and paired with a Pesto Mayo. So good. Other members of my party had the Fried Cod BLT which was enjoyed, and the Fried Chicken BLT which is served on a jelly donut. It rocked. I went here with my parents for a pre-mother's day celebration... and maybe watch a little hockey. I had the classic burger with side of mixed greens. Like it said, I did not need one drop of ketchup. The burger was juicy (Medium Rare) and had cheese, bacon, fried onions, and more bacon on it. My dad had the monkfish francaise, and while I didn't ask how it was, the plate was licked clean. Also the bartender knew A LOT about the craft beers. First time at Rockin Fish; we have been to several other restaurants in Northport, it was disappointing. My daughter and I ordered the special of the day stuffed snapper. It was stuff with crabmeat and shrimp. Could not find the shrimp, I guess it was mince up so fine. For a $28 meal, I would have expected at least some bigger pieces of shrimp. The meal also came with rice and some vegetables. The vegetables had no flavor it looked like it came right out of the freezer bag, the rice was so so. My wife order the steak sandwich without the bread, it came with the bread. The order took over 30 minutes to be served. The restaurant did not appear to be busy that it would take this long to prepare, especially with the quality of the food. We go frequently to Northport, Rockin Fish is crossed off the list of restaurants we will eat at. read more

Ok this is my second review of this place. It's true I ripped my pants on an electrical box on the wall and they didn't do anything about it but who cares when the food is this good. We had dinner before a show on a Sat. night and our server Meredith was sweet and accomodating. A dozen blue point oysters were fresh, ice cold and delicious. A special of "Oysters Samba" were delicious with Ahi Tuna and Sesame Ginger Sauce, Oyster Burrito was sublime, Fish Tacos fresh and scrumptious, Ahi Tuna 2 ways and Braised Short Ribs a triumph. Food and service are great so who cares if the place is so cramped the servers and bussers asses rub against your head as they sashay their way around the dining room. A must go to place for foodies but I wish i could keep it as my local secret. Oh and BTW beer and wine only but 16 different beers on tap and 75 wines by the bottle make it a non issue. read more

The tuna was good, however the "crabmeat" stuffing was mostly made of a fish substitute (sea legs) and the sea weed salad was there for color only. I began to try and chew thru it. Left a FULL plate of chewed up ball. Finally when we were all done someone came by and asked if we were done. Ohhhh we are done ok. We stopped for dinner the food was not good it was cold and had no taste . Even McDonald's fries are better. The fish and chips were cold and the fish tasted spoiled. The only thing good was the service. Don't recommend. read more
