We were starved after a day in the Grand Canyon and steaks sounded perfect. We Yelp everything so I have no idea how we skipped Yelping Rod's. The exterior is inviting - huge red neon "Rod's Steakhouse". Walked into the bar, big hello from the bartender. Then up the stairs to a cool Route 66 roadhouse motif dining room. Greeted shyly by the host and sat in the middle of an empty dining room. The menu's are on the table, shaped like cows which is a smart touch. It just all added up to a potentially great dinner. We waited a little too long for anyone to ask to bring us drinks or water. No biggie. The adult beverages come up on a dumbwaiter so they take a bit of time and yes - the house wine is a small bottle of Barefoot that costs more than an entire bottle. Whatever. Then, they were out of the appetizer that the pleasant waiter recommended. Ok, again whatever. The stuffed jalapeno's are not jalapeno's or any kind of stuffed pepper - not sure what they were but like the waiter said, they weren't homemade. Definitely frozen out of a box. Our bad. When our food arrived - what a disappointment! It's not that it was bad food, it was just without ANY flavor at all. AND it was warm, not hot. The baked potato was warmish. The gravy was almost cool. 4/21/12 Terrible. The "hostess" was so rude, and the slowest moving person I've ever seen. It took 20 minutes to get our drinks, I really wish we would have left. The food wasn't very good. My wifes steak was over cooked, my prime rib tasted like it had been re-heated in the microwave, and the kids meal was $9. for some chicken nuggets and fries. Service was very very slow. We were there for over an hour for lunch. It's the worst $65.00 I've ever spent and I will never go back to this place. One star is way too generous. read more

I ate here based on the Yelp reviews and was disappointed. My wife, 12 year old son and I each had the sugar dipped steak, a couple of sodas and a coffee and walked out with a ninety dollar dinner bill. I wouldn't have minded so much if the steak was good but we were all disappointed. It was the type of steak I might expect at a Denny's or other diner but not at a steakhouse supposedly famous for it's good steaks. What a let down. read more

I was EXTREMELY disappointed when I was advised by the manager that he would rather us leave than allow my 12 yr old niece to order from the 10 and under kids menu. Place was empty when we got there, should have been first clue! Ordered a Rod's famous margarita, it was served in a beer glass and awful! Waiter took our order, brought cold, store bought rolls with cold butter packets, like a cafeteria ! Salad was cheap iceberg lettuce. I ordered a Filet Mignon, and baked potato. The meat is advertised as fresh daily, NOT! The steak looked old, half was cooked right, other half well done. How do you do that? No taste, suppose to be smoked. Wow! This restaurant blew me away. The steak was perfection, great service and the vintage style/atmosphere felt like i was traveling back to the sixties era. We originally wanted to go eat at another restaurant down the road... boy am I glad they were full!! We'd noticed a neon outline of a cow when we were walking toward our hotel and thought "why not." We split steak and lobster (chose green beans for the side). For a small fee we upgraded to the fillet. We ate some yeast rolls while our food cooked. They were warm and hearty... baked to perfection. When our food came out, the lobster tail was seasoned perfectly, the filet was cooked to our exact specifications (medium well) and the green beans tasted fresh like they'd just been harvested earlier in the day. Everything was so flavorful! The steak was so tender a knife was really not needed. The young man who took our order was polite, efficient and personable too. I think his name was Javier? Either way he was really awesome. When I opened up yelp and found they only had a 3 star rating I was SHOCKED! Our experience was definitely awesome. We look forward to a meal here on our next trip out. read more

Really low level place. The steak is really tough to chew it

It has been a little over 6 months since we ate at Rod's and since then I've noticed a lot of negative reviews. We went back to Rod's on Saturday, April 15th , 2017 (my birthday weekend in Williams) and had another outstanding meal. We basically ordered the same meals we had last time and my wife's steak was expertly cooked to medium rare, the rib eye being thick and marbled perfectly. Excellent taste. I again had the best fish in awhile. Cant get fish that well cooked in our area. Fried to perfection, seasoned just the way I like. The rolls were baked to a golden brown and they melt in your mouth. The service was first-rate too. Our waitress was prompt and good spirited for a packed Saturday night. The whole experience was first class. I'm sorry that my experiences seem not to be what others are getting out of this place. Granted, we've only have been twice. But we'll definitely be going again!! P.S. The green beans WE had were definitely NOT out of a can as others have said. Our were fresh and prepared perfectly. If I could buy canned beans like theirs, I would!!!! read more

This was such a disappointment. We were having a terrific day in an amazing town and thought to top it off with a steak dinner...Rod's was recommended by a shop owner but BIG mistake! Service was slow, and the waitress was just short of incompetent. Here's the rundown: *Questions us asking for a kids menu for the 10 year old in our group...10 and under includes 10! *Salad is bagged iceberg lettuce, carrots, cabbage. Extra dressing? "Oops" forgot again. Blue cheese was actually sour cream with garlic salt (um, what?) *yeast rolls were dessert sweet but still good until the 2nd basket came out with blackened tops. *Mashed potatoes were actually good but the brown gravy was definitely canned. *baked potato and French fries...nothing special but no complaints *Rib eye was small, lots of gristle and completely flavorless. *The kicker? $21.00 per plate. Normally no complaints on that price for ribeye but then again I expect it to be delicious as well. Those in charge should be ashamed of themselves! read more

Not impressed with the "bagged salad" that came with dinner. My filet mignon was burnt in the top & was over cooked- I sent it back. Fried chicken was fried "too much," just too hard to enjoy. The yeast rolls were really good. Kids "chicken puffs" (really homemade nuggets) were very good. Kids Mac & cheese is simply Kraft. Not worth $9 kids meal. read more

Worst service ever, we waited 45 minutes before we even got water. Dinner was in bits and pieces, some people in our party got served, were done eating before we got our food. There were 5 people in our party, not like we were 50. After 2 hours we finally got a refill on our drinks. Never again!!!! read more

A steakhouse should know how to cook a steak and these guys don't. I didn't check Yelp and feel like a fool. We took the recommendation of our train host who must get free food or leftovers for his dog as there was plenty left on our plates and others nearby. Service was non existent and we paid on the way out after a 15 minute wait for the check. No tip as it's not expected after an experience like that. Sanchez is doing his best but poor old Rod would be turning in his grave. Our only night in town was wasted on this joint. I am sure Williams has plenty more to offer. read more

It was okay. We were happy to see real-live cowboys sitting there when we walked in. This place has been around forever and the cuisine matches it. The salad was nothing to write home about. Ditto the wine - a little plastic travel bottle of cab sauv. The rolls were better, and the steak was good, not terrific or anything. If I'd known about our other find in Williams, we would have gone there twice, but I'm still glad we got to experience this place, since it's a dying breed in America: a family place, carried on by the people who used to work there. read more

I guess our expectations should have been a lot lower given the location, but we were still very disappointed in our dinner here. FOOD: I had the sugar steak (which I can't recall the name of), which was a terrible cut of meat full of gristle and general unpleasantness. Moreover, the steak was clearly cooked at far too low of a temperature so that by the time it got to what they called "medium rare" (but was actually more of a medium), the outside was barely even grill-marked, much less caramelized. That left way too much of a sweet taste on the outside that I found quite off-putting. The fries were cold and obviously pre-frozen, and my husband's fried trout was overly battered and kind of tasteless. SERVICE/AMBIANCE: When we came in, the manager (owner?) showed us to a seat right by the door. It was a very cold and drafty night, and I asked if it there were any tables available farther from the door. In a very angry-sounding, clipped tone, she said, "Not unless you're going to wait 30 to 45 minutes. I'm really busy tonight, so give me your name now," and she pulled out a pad of paper. (There were only two other people waiting.) Whoa, hang on - I said I'd be glad to sit down there if that was the only choice, and she sort of sighed like I was the biggest inconvenience in the world and we sat down. But that would have been fine, if she hadn't immediately turned around seated the party of two directly behind us in line AT A TABLE ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE ROOM FROM THE DOOR WTF. Then, when a two person table opened up across the room right after we'd just ordered, we asked the server if we might move. She hesitated and said she needed to consult with her manager, the scary lady, who then came back and demanded to know if we had ordered yet, and if we had been brought food, because it was going to throw off their whole night for us to move etc. ...but then our server let us move anyway. Unfortunately, the second table was under an air conditioner going full blast (?!?) and so I went out to the car and got my coat and ate wearing it because I was too intimidated to ask to move again. :( OVERALL: We would have been better off cobbling together a cold cut and cheese dinner from Safeway, or maybe having a VASTLY cheaper burger at a diner in town. read more

Crappy. Bad service, bad food and high bill. When asked what the soup is, the "waitress" replied, "it's like noodles and vegetables or something". Crumby salad, I think it was out of a bag. One of us braved the soup, he said there were about 4 noodles. They claim to be a steakhouse, so you'd think they'd have a decent ribeye. I can't say for sure how their ribeye is, because I'm not sure if I had one. It's what I ordered though. It was the puniest, yuckiest steak I've ever had. I'm pretty sure everyone's meal came out of a can, including the steak. They weren't busy, I think we were one of 4 or 5 tables. We got there at 3, had drinks by 3:30, salad after 4:00, dinners about 5:15, the check by 5:20. At least they brought 1 thing fast, I guess. read more

In three trips to the US in 15 years, we've eaten at Rod's Steak House in Williams twice. The first time (September 1996) it was to celebrate a birthday, and it looked like the flashest place in town to do this. Then I made the mistake of passing on the steak - the second time (April 2011), I got it right. I had the best steak I've ever eaten. It came with a little container of steak juice to add to taste; there was no need, as it was the juiciest steak with a wonderful mesquite wood flavour. This place was amazing!! I ordered the top sirloin (rare). it was perfect!! My family ordered the chard sugar steak, it was really tasty as well!! Lackluster at best. Heard a lot of god things about RodS and was anticipating a great eating memory. Poor service started off the adventure right from the get go. We ordered onion rings and fried zucchini. The plates they served for the appetizers were ice cold, the apps were not even Luke-warm. The positive side of the meal was the warm yeast rolls and the meat was of high quality and well prepared. There was 6 people in our party, including 2 kids, and the bill came out to ) $190. Not worth it and the kids wanted McDonalds afterwards. Cool place, nice atmosphere and interesting rest rooms...the owners since 1985 still come to work every night and put a personal touch on the place, but I really don't recommend this to sit down and eat. okay I don't know what to say about this place except for it's a joke I really had high expectations but at the same time knew it was kind of going to be crappy as soon as the dinner rolls dropped on the table and they were burnt we knew we were up for a bad time especially when they didn't even have soft butter it was hard butter and little packets the first thing I had was my salad which I will say was the best thing on the menu that I had it was just a basic salad but it had some kind of a garlic dressing that I really enjoyed so with that being said I had high hopes that everything else was going to be good the waiter recommended me some sugar cured steak that he said was really good but it's pretty much a guess on what kind of meat it's going to be it is a chef's choice so you could be getting a sirloin you could be getting New York strip you could be getting a freaking hamburger patty for all I know but no matter what they're the same price when the steak came out I could tell by looking at it that it was horrible and when I bit into it it was even worse it tasted like a piece of sugar coated turd and I cannot describe the nastiness and how much fat was in this meat next to it was a saddest baked potato I've ever seen it literally had depression issues just looking at it everything from there on I just was kind of done with so I got my bill and the guy was nice enough to take the steak off that I didn't eat in the first place and I paid for my salad and was on my way I just hope that if somebody comes here they are smart enough to go to a different restaurant rather than here even though I know there's not a lot of selections in town also the bathroom situation is really funky according to what my wife said... read more

It's not too bad but certainly not as great as I expected after reading some of the reviews. The meat (we had T-bone) wasn't cooked as ordered, one part was medium and the other medium-rare. My French fries were covered with a thick layer of salt, I happen to like salt but most people would have sent them back I think. No woodfire grilling which, in my opinion would do wonders for the meat. read more

Fantastic service!! My steak was over cooked but the server replaced it and it was perfect! We eat out frequently, if we get great food and poor service we do not return. But, great service always brings us back. Pleasant experience starting in the bar and continued thru dinner. The homemade thousand island dressing was fantastic! I'm sorry but this is not a good steak restaurant!! I had the ladies cut Prime and it was tough! I ordered it raw! Did not get horseradish! The waiter was friendly. Ordered wine by the glass and got the little bottle of Barefoot. I'm not a big fan of Barefoot wine. They served sweet biscuits with the salad which was good. My husband got the regular size prime. Very disappointed planned our day around dinner at Rods we called said they were serving until 9:30 got there at 8:30 and they said they were closed because it was cold??? Isn't this a mountain town and it was in the 40s and raining??? So we ask him to recommend a place and he said he didn't know? If he was the manager he needs to know the area. Worst service I have ever experienced! There was only one waiter covering more than 20 tables. Over the hour & 45 mins we were there, the waiter only stopped at our table 4 times: to take our drink order, our food order, to bring our food, & then to bring refills for our sodas that had been empty over 40 mins. We saw the manager & host observing from the lower floor, but they did nothing to assist the waiter or check on patrons. We flagged down a busboy to ask for our check. After 20 mins, we went to the front desk to pay. Still had to wait 10 min to get the tab totaled. There was a host & a manager who decided to pull tables together on either side of us (we were a party of 3) & split a party of 16. One table was adults & the other was all kids age 6-12. After having them yell back & forth over the top of us for 20 mins, I asked the host to be reseated. The manager dragged our table to the other side of the kids table. Would have been nice if they would have asked us up front if we would mind having our table rearranged instead of having to cause a scene just so I could hear the conversation at my table. To top it off, the food was mediocre at best & not worth the price. read more

The rolls and potato was great but the ribeye steak must have been a utility grade. Cooked a nice medium rare but could not chew it!
