Do you remember when you were a kid and you came to the dinner table with your hat on? Well I do. The rule was simple. My mom would make us take our hat off when we ate. Well at Rod's Steak House it appears nobody had a mom. It's that kinda place. We happened to be in town for the Classic Car Show and thought we'd stop in here for dinner. The food was good...notice I did not say great. The green beans were a little water logged, the salad dressing came out in a package you had to open, and so did the butter. I first ate at Rod's on a Route 66 trip in 1978 and it was really good. Prices were fair, steaks were cooked perfectly and service was fast and friendly. In and out on a Friday night in 45 minutes and it was crowded. Fast forward to the next and LAST time I will ever eat there. Another road trip west to Vegas and we stopped in Williams for the night as I was looking forward to another great steak at Rod's. Well it started bad and got worse, much worse. It took nearly 20 minutes to seat us and the place wasn't even very busy? Well it looked that they were understaffed, so I let it slide. After 10 minutes the server came to take our drink orders and we said we wanted to go ahead and order the food also, so she said she would be right back...Well ten minutes later she came back and took our orders, then we waited...and waited and waited. Another 20 minutes goes by and she brings the salads and some rolls and said the steaks would be out "in a little while" which I thought was odd phrasing it that way. I guess "a little while" means 20 minutes because that's when the steaks and prime rib were delivered to the table with NONE of them cooked as ordered (med-rare). Steaks were both served medium-medium well and prime rib was served nearly raw, maybe barely rare. We told the server these must be for another table but she said No, those are yours." And I replied, no they are not and mentioned the poor cooking. She said she could take them back and ask the manager what they wanted to do. Huh? How about what I wanted done like cook two more steaks med-rare and at least cook the prime rib to med-rare. She came back a few minutes later and said "We can cook the prime rib some more, but it will take at least 30 minutes to cook the steaks." We had now been there over an hour with only some rolls and salads and had enough of their "friendly service". So I said forget it we're leaving and we're only paying for the rolls and salads. She went back and said the manager was going to charge ONLY $5.00 for each salad and $4.00 for the rolls for a total of $24.00. Left $25 on the table and left, never to return. read more

Lured by the neon cow sitting on top of this said restaurant, Hubby and I decided it was the perfect place to devour some steaks. He had the T-Rex...I mean the T bone steak and I had the sugar coated steak. I liked the fact that they had a lady cut but I didn't get that one. The place was decent enough. The Prime Rib was a little on the dry side, but wasn't bad. The Beef liver was a little better than ok, but I've tasted better. The filet of Cod which my wife was also just ok. read more

Every 2 or so years we visit the William-Grand Canyon Area. Each time, we go to Rod's for dinner. The food is simply prepared, with no frills. We have enjoyed a complete cross section of the menu from Prime rib to seafood. We have never had a bad meal. This is not an expensive-franchise based, cookie cutter style place. This is a step back in time in a one horse town keeping our Mother-Road of Route 66 alive. You'll be walking back to a simpler time-pure and simple. If this is the experience you are looking for then Rod's is your place. The wine list is short and fair priced. By the way, If there is a problem, just let the staff know, they will take care of it. When you're done with your meal-you'll walk out with change in your pocket. read more

My husband and I loved this restaurant. As we drove by, there was this neon pink sign which immediately got our attention because it looked old fashioned. We went on a Saturday night and the restaurant was packed. However, we were seated right away. The paper menus were shaped like a cow which added to the charm of the ambiance. Our food was fabulous. My husband ordered prime rib & I ordered the teriyaki steak. I haven't had meat & potatoes like that in a long time. The food is pricey. Found this restaurant in the Arizona Magazine's best of 2011 restaurants list. I think the magazine must have gotten paid for this recommendation. Rod's certainly has the potential for greatness but the meal was far too inconsistent. Rolls burned and we had to ask the server for them. He said he'd bring them with the salads so we had to wait another 10 minutes for them. Soup excellent. Salads tasteless. Three sirloin steaks all ordered medium. The cuts of meat were nice but one was served medium rare, one medium, and one charred. Green beans no flavor. Baked potato and fries good. Fried chicken good. If they got rid of the inconsistencies they may be worthy of 4 or 5 stars but this can't currently be the best of Arizona. read more

This place holds a special childhood memory for me. And I brought my family back to enjoy the experience. It was just like I remembered. It is not a super special place that has dancing or bands, but it is a historic restaurant along Route 66. It has a great story behind it and the food is just as memorable. The charred steaks are amazing. Beware that they are sweet so if you want a stern meat taste avoid the special charred or teriyaki flavored steaks. Make sure you keep the menus. The restaurant Is a nice '60's atmosphere. Service is great. Unfortunately, none of this makes up for the poor quality of the food. My S.O. ordered the ribeye, and I had the prime rib. Her steak was cooked to perfection, med rare. Unfortunately, it was very tough. It did not even have the appearance of a ribeye. My prime rib was also very tough, tasteless, and very fatty. Being optimists we asked for different knives. Which were brought promptly to no avail? It did not help. We left most of our meat untouched. Save yourself $62.00 and don't go. read more

Stopped on a road trip from California to Pennsylvania and all nine in our party were pleased. Menu prices and portions were reasonable and food was of very good quality given the prices. Our waiter was friendly and the somewhat dated interior had a nostalgic charm appropriate for route 66. After reading reviews for Williams, AZ decided on Rod's. So glad bcz hubby & son had the 10 oz ribeye special & I had the cod, which was huge ! Yeast rolls were blackened on top and not that great. We saw the mixed reviews for this place and decided to try it out for ourselves and actually were pleasantly surprised. We had good service, the sauteed mushrooms and chicken wings were a hit with our party of eight. Some had a NY, some the prime rib and everything was very tasty. No complaints here. Our waitress was was friendly. Hubby and I both went for the rib eye steak. I asked our server how the green beans were and she said, they were canned. So, I went with the baked potato. The salad dressing was sour cream with a touch of blue cheese, the steak was tough but flavorful. I will say the bread rolls were very good. We are here after the Grand Canyon train ride. We first stopped at the south rim garage and they were too full to seat us. Not sure why it doesn't score higher than 3 stars. It's a steak house. Don't go with expectations of something fancy or gourmet. It's good steak. We all had prime rib and kids meals. The prime rib was excellent. Kids ate every bit of their meals and loved it. The rolls were homemade and good. Drinks were also good. Nothing fancy but all around a great meal. Go there if you want a giant steak and a whiskey drink. The seating hostess was very personable, beyond that, the experience was subpar at best. The prices were high and the steak quality was terrible. Two people in my party had the ribeye, and the meat was very chewy, unseasoned, and had a propane taste. Our waiter dripped water all over my grandmother's plate while filling water glasses. We had to flag him down to refill glasses. We asked repeatedly for take-out containers. My food was snatched from in front of me before I was finished. After I gave our waiter my card to pay the check, we waited an additional 15 minutes before my card was returned. I ordered the rib eye steak and they brought me a sirloin steak and when I told the waitress it was a sirloin she said that was their rib eye.....she asked if I wanted something different and I said I'll try the prime rib....BIG mistake....it was the toughest and fattiest piece I have ever tried..........so, the food brings it down to a 3 and only there because the wait staff is great and very accommodating and their potato bacon soup is amazing! The rolls, when they finally arrived were burned. The fried chicken and kids fishsticks were way over cooked. The steaks, the specialty were tough, although cooked correctly.
