We came here on a Sunday afternoon and the restaurant was pretty empty so we were seated right away. The staff were very nice and allowed us to take our time ordering. They also were very accommodating when we asked them to bring out a different type of chilli or when we switched some hot water for tea (the hot tea here is also by the glass and not a teapot). My family ordered 4 dishes: canh chua, cá kho, walnut shrimp, and ngêo xào. The dishes were pretty large in size and we had extra to bring home. The shrimp batter was crunchy but the shrimp themselves weren't that good. The sauce also was not evenly distributed. The clams were huge and the sauce was not too salty like some places. The catfish was caramelized perfectly though I wish there was more fish. The canh chua was my favorite though. We got the large (which was too much for our family of 4) and the ratio of vegetables to soup to fish was excellent. Overall a pretty decent place for some Vietnamese Chinese comfort food. read more

I recently dined at this restaurant and had an unpleasant experience. The food was just average, maybe a 3-star meal, and while the waiter was polite, service was slow because he seemed to be the only one working. The restaurant has a family-run feel and is fine for a casual lunch, but what disappointed me most was the owner's dishonesty. We ordered two bowls of combination soup, which should have been about $16 each plus tax, or around $35 total. However, the receipt came to more than $42. When we asked why the price did not match the menu, the owner said she had added $2 per bowl for a large size, even though we had not ordered that. Then, when we pointed out another $0.50 charge for takeout, she said it was a mistake and refunded the amount. I was disappointed by this practice because it felt like extra charges were added without asking, and the bill included items that should not have been there. I try to avoid eating around this plaza since traffic on Story and the parking lot is just insane. I took my kids to get a haircut across the street so I decided might as well grab something in the area for dinner. I checked what was around there since there were a few places I wanted to try and after talking to my buddy, he recommended Rong Bien. He said not to check the Yelp rating and just try it for myself. I was glad I did. I was definitely surprised that they got a low 3 star rating. It's more of your old traditional Vietnamese restaurant with no fancy decorations like the new restaurants. The staff are attentive and you can wave them to come over if needed since sometimes they might not know u need something. We ordered some food and didn't have enough space on the table so the staff came over right away to remove some of the stuff that we didn't need to make room. Their menu is a la carte or you can order a set of family dinner plan like banquet style. We opted for a la carte since we usually like to choose our own when we go to these type of restaurants unless their family plan have the items we are planning to order. The food came out at a timely manner. When we came here, there were only a few people eating so that might also helped. We ordered the soup with fish maw and crab. This comes with qual eggs which was a plus even though it's not listed on the menu. The soup had a really good thick texture and very flavorful. If you don't like it sweet, u can add sriracha or a little fish sauce. Their large bowl was good for 4-5 people. We opted to do family style; that way we can try different food in the menu and had it with rice. We ordered the clams with bean sauce since I love this dish and will it if the restaurant offers it. The clams were really good but I think the last clam I ate was dead and had a bad taste. Besides that, the clams were really good and the sauce was good too. I ordered the salt and pepper porkchops since my buddy told me to order it. I order this at other restaurants in the past and it's usually a hit or miss. This place did a really good job with this dish. The seasoning was perfect where it was not too salty. The pork chops was cut thinly so the flavor and texture worked very well. This was my youngest son's favorite now. He loves chicharron so this reminds him of it but with meat. My wife loves to order the lobster with tamarind sauce or the butter garlic one so I have to order this dish for this dinner. I opted for the lobster with butter garlic since it's less messy. The flavor was good and what you expect from this dish. The price is around $33 a pound and usually the lobster here is 3-5lbs when the staff told us the lobster size. Only thing I wasn't a fan about was how little meat there was for the size of the lobster. But I know when we come back here, we will probably still order the lobster but with the tamarind sauce just to see how it compares to other restaurants. I wanted to order dishes like the squid, shrimp, bo luc lac, or salt and pepper fish but the family was full. I guess we will try these dishes next time when we are in the area. The 4 dishes we did order were a good amount for a family of 4-5. The bill came out to $315 including tax and tip. We ordered 6 beers as well. If you have a family gathering and want to do a family style dinner or lunch, this place is a good location for it. The food was okay--not bad, but nothing particularly special. I'm fortunate to have much better home-cooked food, so it didn't really stand out to me. The restaurant itself is clean and spacious, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the service was disappointing. After the server brought out our food, it was difficult to get anyone's attention. At one point, I politely asked a server for something while he was only a couple of feet away. He clearly heard my request but simply ignored it and walked away without responding. April special at rong bien is $10 for Hu tieu Nam vang Craving Hu tieu so we went for late lunch around 2pm. Spacious restaurant with outdoor seating and we sat inside by the door. Nice cool breeze to cool down especially when having hot soup. We quickly ordered and waters were served immediately along with Veggie sides. The nem nuong roll came out shortly after followed by our soups. We got the Hu tieu Nam vang and Banh canh cua, both soups came out piping hot and man it burned going down, but burned so good. Rong Bien is one of my dad's favorite spots, and since I hadn't been in a while, I decided to check it out. I ordered the large hu tieu dac biet, which I noticed most tables were getting. The bowl came with a generous amount of noodles, but the meat portion didn't quite match the noodle ratio. Next time, I'd probably go with the regular-sized bowl for better balance. The soup on the side had a large beef bone, though it didn't have much meat on it. The broth was light and tasty, which I really enjoyed. The menu offers a nice variety of meats, but we mainly came for the catfish. We started with the chicken wings, which were super crispy on the outside but a bit dry inside. However, the sauce coating them was delicious. For our main dishes, we tried the sweet and sour catfish fire pot and the catfish in a clay pot. The fire pot broth was too sweet and tended to overpower everything except the catfish itself. The clay pot sauce had great flavor but was a little on the salty side and definitely needed the white rice. The portions here are generous, and the prices are fair. I been for while I came back to San Jose for Asian market shopping trip. The name of restaurant ' rong biển " was attracted me. Friday at noon time it was perfect for luncheon. I was impress how nice and clean inside. The service is excellent and the foods very good, soon their bring the steam clams with lemongrass, Nam Vang noodles, and butter garlic lobster, i know right away this is my great choice. I've visited this restaurant several times now, and while the food usually delivers, the service leaves a lot to be desired. Let's start with the positives: stir-fried Lobster with Butter & Garlic--has consistently impressed me. The flavor is rich and good, and the lobster is always cooked just right. It's definitely a go-to dish for me and has never disappointed. Most of the other dishes I've tried here have been pretty good as well. The flavors are generally bold and good. It's clear the kitchen knows what they're doing when it comes to cooking seafood. The only dish that didn't hit the mark for me was the Stir-fried Lobster in Tamarind Sauce--it just didn't work for my taste, with the sauce overpowering the natural flavor of the lobster. Unfortunately, the service is where things really fall short. The staff is not very attentive, and on more than one occasion, I've had to wait too long just to get someone's attention. One particular experience stands out: I asked for a 4-5 pound lobster, and when they said they didn't have that size, I told them I'd pass on it. Instead of being understanding, the woman taking the order gave me attitude and didn't return to our table at all after that. Very bad service here. We walked in and they sat us down quickly but took forever to take our order. We had to waved them down but they still didn't come to our table for another 10-15 mins and it wasn't that busy. Horrible customer service. Overcharged on the receipt, added hidden charges without telling the customer. Cashier just gave us credit card receipt and when we asked to see the itemized receipt we noticed that they added some extra charges. I found Rong Bien because I was craving Canh Chua, and I was not disappointed! 1. Spring Rolls w Pork & Shrimp: Perfectly chew wrappers stuffed with herbs, bean sprouts and meats. Crunchy just the way I like it. The sauce came warm and wasn't too hoisin-y or peanut-y. Yum! 2. Canh Chua: The star of the show!!! The balance of sweet, sour and salty is irresistible. Came with Okra, tomato, beansprouts, banana stem, and a huge portion of catfish. I put it in a hot pot to heat it up-- filled to the brim. I would order this everyday if I could. 3. Mango Salad: Sweet salad with surprise shrimp! The shrimp were a good surprise, but I would've liked some lime on the side or some acid to brighten the sauce. A bit sweet for me. Still delish though, and again it was a generous portion. They forgot to pack my sticky rice which I ordered for the salad, but I was hella full anyways so I wasn't mad The food here is delicious. The pho áp la is to die for. It's a baked crispy style of pho, a whole new way to eating the classic. They do not cheap out on the side dishes as well. seating is plentiful, and the service speed was moderate. Utensils were VERY clean compared to most resturaunts nearby. read more

My mom ordered a Canh Chua and Thit Kho Ca and some white rice and the old lady cashier tries to overcharge us by charging us 66$ for the entire order, in the menu it would only costs 40-50$ max and we found out that she tried to put in 2 Canh Chua instead of 1, my mom argued with that lady and instead of apologizing, she wanted to fight my mom.
