This place was recommended by one of the local orchards because they use local ingredients. We ordered a buffalo chicken panini, a strawberry fields salad with no chicken, and a toasted kids sandwich with ham and cheese. When we got the kids sandwich it wasn't toasted. The salad also still had chicken on it. We tried to get someone's attention, there were three people working. One was on the phone and the other two were in a deep discussion, so we had to stand at the pick up area and wait for quite awhile before we could get it fixed. After we got a young man's attention he took the panini and salad back. Unfortunately, although the panini was an easy fix, the salad was not. Instead of remaking the salad without chicken the young man behind the counter just pulled the chicken off the existing salad. When he handed it back there were still chicken remanents in the bowl. (I'll attach a picture.) I also feel like it's important to note that the woman ahead of me also had trouble getting her order accurately from the girl taking orders. And, as we were waiting another order called the store and the girl was apologizing because apparently that was not right either. It wasn't overly busy. I'm not sure what the problem was. For a place that seems to prize itself on gf and other dietary restricted options, one would think they'd be respectful of a request to hold meat on a salad. And then, when they made a mistake, remake the salad. That wasn't what happened. When we asked for a refund on the salad my husband tells me they wouldn't offer one, but wanted to give us a gift card instead. They did offer to remake the salad (which they should have done in the first place) but by that time everyone else in our party was done eating. Regardless we live in Dallas, TX and are just passing through so we can't use a gift card. We explained this to the gentleman we were trying to return the salad to. He was generous enough to give us the gift card and a cash refund - this is why they got a second star. read more

I searched out whether they were open or not (Facebook says closed until further notice - I feel like everyone uses FB as a primary "are they open" search...) then called to find they ARE. (minus one star) I stopped in for an espresso drink. I ordered three shots of espresso over ice with a touch of their homemade caramel sauce and some mocha. Added non-dairy milk as there were a few options. I also ordered a Maine Maple Bacon Bagel bagel breakfast sandwich. The espresso drink was TASTY! I usually like strongly flavored espresso. This wasn't quite as roasty as I like BUT it did the trick. Perfect amount of oat milk. The breakfast sandwich left a lot to be desired. For $8 I was expecting better. The gluten-free bagel was sub-par. Dry on the outside. Not appetizing. The egg had a strange aftertaste - perhaps something they used to oil the pan? The bacon was floppy/raw-feeling and had no real maple flavor. I wasn't sure whether to expect Maine maple flavor (which I had hoped for) or smoked maple (wood) but didn't detect either. If they don't bake the bacon, they should. And up the ante on maple. (minus one star) Did I eat it? Yes. Would I spend $15+ on this order again? No. Overall, I would go back for an espresso drink. I love that this cafe offers options that are outside of the typical burgers and sandwiches. Most of the menu breaks into 6 categories: crepes (sweet or savory), salads, soups, quiche, desserts or drinks/smoothies. All of the food is organic and gluten-free. In fact, even my straw was made from plants! This visit, I tried the Chicken Avo(cado) crepe and got a Banana Chocoloco smoothie. Both were delightfully fresh and actually filled me up more than I anticipated. I've actually been one other time and tried a quiche and salad. Again, yummy in my tummy. The decor and ambiance inside is welcoming and beautiful. There are many places to plug in and work on a laptop or charge your phone. The outside has a cute patio for dining and they've recently added additional rooftop seating! The most brilliant part of Roots is the ability to reserve one hour of childcare time absolutely free! Connected to the cafe is a playroom where your kiddos will be cared for while you squeeze in lunch with a friend, chip away on some work, or just catch your breathe! Now that I've gone on and on about everything I love, I've gotta give some constructive criticism about the service. Both times I visit the staff was quite friendly, no problems there. However, there seems to be miscommunication or a lack of understanding what the cook/back of the house is responsible for versus the front of the house. The first time I visit, my salad was made in a reasonable amount of time, but my quiche was never transferred from the cooler up front to wherever it was being heated up. The cafe was still fairly new and it was busy so I chalked it up as a simple oversight. This time I was the only person waiting for my order and my crepe was ready but my smoothie wasn't made. I told the cook I was still waiting for that and she looked at the woman at the register as if she should have handled that already. Asked for a cortado- even paid for one and it was on the receipt, but the girl gave us a frittata and said "this is a cortado"... It was pretty poor service in general. The cortado I finally did have was not good. I ordered a kids steamer for my 4-year-old, and it came out VERY hot and didn't cool down for over an hour to drinking temp (other cafes steam milk to drinking temp, especially for kids). It was also $5.50 for just a small cup of steamed milk. Happy to pay that somewhere good where it is made well, but this was much more than the cheap $2-3 espresso drinks they had. I don't know. If it wasn't because I asked, I wouldn't have found that out until the food was served.I opted to get it in a crepe. I also ordered a 16 iced coffee. I was given an order number and told to listen fir that number. I sat down and waited. After 15 minutes, I stood up and to the other side of the counter, where people were picking up their food. I wondered if maybe they had called my number and I missed it. I found my iced coffee there. Apparently it had been sitting there for quite a while. A young lady confirmed that it was my iced coffee. I asked about the food snd was told it was almost ready. 15 minutes later, the food came out. I had already drank my coffee. At $4.25 for what amounted to about 8oz of coffee , I wasn't about to buy another one. I wish they had waited until the food was ready to make the coffee. Not serve it and pretend I was going to nurse it for a half hour. I also wish the young lady at the front counter had told me there was going to a delay in getting my food so I could decide if I wanted to wait or go somewhere else. Oh, one last thing. Not a huge deal, but it just added to my annoyed state. My food was served in To Go containers. I was never asked if I was eating in or taking it with me. Overall, this is a nice place. A little too fancy and a little too expensive for my taste. My breakfast came out to a little over $16 before tip. The food was good. I'll give them that. But, this is more of hangout kind of place, where you pay for the food and the ambiance and don't mind killing 60-90 minutes. On this particular day, I had a small amount of time. Decided to try this place after driving by often. Lovely space, but food was an absolute disaster and the side of religion was unexpected and unnecessary. The drinks were decent, we got a latte and a smoothie. The crepe was cold, who serves crepes cold? With raw vegetables and unmelted presliced cheese? Gross. After we reminded them, I gave it a try, it was microwaved and still cold in the center, bottom was over cooked and overall it was just very subpar and I couldn't finish it. Not wanting to leave without at least doing a little business with these locals i scooped a couple cups of what turned out to be some of the more disappointing coffee that i have had outside of a diner at 4am. The decor and atmosphere is nice. The crepes look somewhat unusual but probably tasty. The best part about the place is the pay it forward jar though. Thats admirable. First off the wonderful: this place is gorgeous in a "I want my kitchen to look like this" kind of way. And there are plugs at every table which makes it a great place to work. There is even a child care room which is amazing. Then the middling: The service was OK but very slow barista service. And the espresso is meh, kind of murky tasting but it could have been the technique on my decidedly not dry (despite having ordered it as such) cappuccino. Finally the disconcerting: On my way to the loo, I noticed that there is a lending library (how cool) that has a secret theme (not so cool). Books under all categories: "self esteem", "parenting", etc. all held the same, sometimes subtle, sometimes overt, message: Jesus can do it. It was enough to make my agnostic skin dance up my arms. All in all, I will be sticking to my usual haunts with surly baristas and excellent espresso. To those considering leaving their kids in this place, you may want to double check what kind of kool-aid they are serving in the child care room. read more

I was delighted to find this new Cafe that is walking distance from my home. Coffee is my #1 priority and they have all the standard coffee options you'd suspect- Hot, Cold, Nitro, Espresso, and even a couple of those Foo-Foo drinks... I was surprised to find the cafe so busy today, since they have only been open for about a week. Maybe it's just today but 90% of the customers seem to be females. While there are food options I've only dug into their coffees so far. Their light roast (usually my go to cause I'm not a dark roast guy) is just average. I liked and would recommend their Vienna roast instead. They have a couple coffee options that surprised me like Vietnamese Coffee and Affogato. Quiche seem to be one of their food specialties, but they have salads, snacks, soups, cookies and kids options. Staff is super friendly and I suspect there is an underlying Christian Ministry behind this business because in the back of the cafe they have a free lending library with inspirational/spiritual books and DVDs. But I got no impression of them trying to evangelize anyone. I look forward to exploring their menu and reviewing again when they get their feet settled. Recently went to roots with my mom and two kids. Honestly the drinks and food were pretty good but my input here is more regarding the staff. I don't know what was going on but everyone working here was miserable! Every worker seemed so put out to even be working never mind offer friendly customer service. I have driven by this place so many times and finally decided to stop. I am so glad I did! This is my favorite place to visit now since I know it's gluten-free, the bathrooms are amazing (especially with kids), and there is enough space to always find a seat. In summer, the outside area is so nice to sit at plus they have a rooftop area that can also be rented! The location is great (although you may have to drive around a few times to find a spot). I usually get a frozen coffee frappe and the frittatas. I can't have dairy so I stick with what I know is dairy free. These people are glowing and love what they do. Plus there is a park/playground close-by and it's right near the highway. We always stop on the way to Freeport especially! read more

Beautiful cafe with parking space which is rare here so I was very excited to find this space however, the service was horrible. And I hate to write a review based off of one employee but it's been days and I still can't get over the horrible customer service experience that I had. I ordered an omelette and a latte however after paying I realized that I forgot to ask for non dairy milk for my latte, after realizing I went back to ask her if it's ok to use non dairy milk in my latte instead of milk and I said I was ok paying the difference. Instead of saying ok, she charged me for another drink and made me pay for a new one. I didn't want to cause a scene since I was with my family but I was shocked and I ended up paying just so I wouldn't have to hold up the line. The lady at the register, (which was an older lady, the younger lady who made my drink was very nice) had so much attitude and scoffed and rolled her eyes at me when I tried to question it as well. They threw out the other coffee that had milk in it which I feel like I still should've been given that if I am paying for both at this point. After leaving the cafe, I noticed THREE charges on my card, the first being the omelette and latte, the second being the latte with non dairy milk, and the third I was unfamiliar with however before I called the next day to question the third charge, I noticed they refunded me back for the random charge and it was in process but still how can one make that mistake, charging my card for something that I didn't purchase? Went here for the first time after high praise. My immediate thought was that yku enter into a bookstore of sorts first. Secondly, the line moved rather slow mainly due to a middle aged woman barking at the extremely nice, patient(and maybe new?) cashier. Whilst in the middle of an order with a Customer, the woman came over very irritable and said stop everything you're doing right now and do what I tell you. After a few minutes she abruptly walked away shaking her head and rolling her eyes. The cashier(with a charming British(?) accent), apologized for the experience, smiled and carried on. The Vietnamese coffee was a bland concoction made on the spot versus being mixed and steeped as it should be. The muffins were great and so was the frittata. Beautiful new spot to meet for coffee or lunch in a very pleasant an convenient location. I like the various seating areas and think it's great for young parents that babysitting is available. One reviewer felt the need to diss the bookstore area which has an intentionally religious bent. For me, knowing that the owners are trying to be a positive influence in the world ("Live out Love" is printed on the employees T-shirts) makes me want this place to succeed. I am hopeful that the inconsistencies in service get worked out quickly. I ordered a cappuccino that I waited 25 minutes for. If you are looking for a quiet place to study, or work avoid at all costs. My friend and I are Westbrook natives and had been wanting to check out Roots for a while now, as it looks so cute from the outside. We decided to go on a Friday evening as we both had some work to do. We walked in and the decor is absolutely adorable, my hopes were high. There was live music, which we were absolutely fine with. After waiting in line for about 10 minutes even though there was only one person in front of me, I attempted to order a smoothie, (although 5.50 for 16oz is a little steep) and was told they could not make me one do to the music. Okay, a little frustrating, but fair enough. What the real breaking point was when the live music turned into eardrum blowing loud karaoke. It was very clear the group of people that were there knew the owners and had free reign of the place despite others trying to enjoy a relaxing setting. The music was so loud my friend and I had to scream at each other to hear what the other was saying. During this time we watching at least four people enter the shop and then turn around and leave after they heard what was going on. It truly felt as if my friend and I had stumbled on some private party, we felt very uncomfortable and out of place as groups of teenagers swarmed around us screaming the wrong words to Bohemian Rhapsody. My suggestion to Roots: Have fun with your group of friends! But warn regular cafe patrons that karaoke is going to happen, and that the menu is limited during the live music. Or better yet, if you want to have a private party for your friends, close the cafe early so unsuspecting customers are not left with a ringing in their ears and a headache for hours after. read more
