I typically sip on coffee/espresso drinks, but their drinks were so good that I chugged it down like water. I did have a little hard time finding this place since I thought it was actually in DOCO. If you happen to be walking in DOCO, you do have to go through a small alley on the side to get to this place, unless you park on J street then it would be easier to find from there. Their prices are not listed on their menu, but I have included the prices of the one's I've tried down below as of 1/2021. Shakarato (one size, 16 Oz) $5.60 + $0.60 for caramel - Love how creamy this drink is! - Didn't have too strong of a espresso taste, but something about that shaken cream made it exciting to drink. - It was soo good that I drank it before I got back to the car... Latte mint macchiato (16oz) $5 -So delicious! I love the smooth sweet mint chocolate complimenting the espresso. Highly recommend this drink! Nitro cold brew with cream and sugar (16 oz) $6 -Very smooth to drink while having a good coffee light bold punch. -Probably one of the top Nitro cold brew coffees I've had! -I think this would have taste good without anything in it, but I am so used to having sweet and creaming coffee drinks that it is a habit to add it in. Overall: Their mixed espresso drinks don't have as much of an espresso punch, but very tasty and flavors blended very well. My only disappointment was that the food was unavailable. I was really looking forward to try their food items like the GARDEN & GRAINS, CHOCOLATE "CROIFFLE" and AVOCADO toast. I'm sad that COVID caused a lot of changes, but I hope that they will bring their food items back soon since I am dying to try them. I am a coffee fanatic, this is a no from me. 2/10. I usually get vanilla in every new place to try. This espresso shot is just a no go and milk was not frothed the right way. Nice coffee shop for those who enjoy sweetened coffee treats. The location is good for those walking around the area, and I could easily see those working nearby grabbing a cup here. Prices are not listed on the menu, so I had to ask. Again though, I appreciate how friendly the staff was about answering. Barista offered to make me an Americano with flavor and added non-dairy milk for a more bargain version of a latte where my added non-dairy preference would have cost a bit more. I was asked to try the drink and see if I liked it or if it needed to be adjusted. It was good but bit sweet for me, so I asked for a bit more coffee which was ok. I appreciated the care, so of course I tipped the addition I would have paid for a latte :) I'll need to try a drip on its own to truly sample the coffee itself, but the staff was incredibly friendly and provides excellent service. read more

So while walking in I saw 2 people walking out with nice wonderful drinks. One was chai latte and one was pumpkin spice latte. BUt when you look at both drinks the whipped creme really caught my eye! I love that there are so many amazing places in the area to grab coffee. Roots is definitely one of those amazing coffee places in town. Roots in located in DOCO and is sort of next to Getta Clue. Roots is not big inside but is beautifully decorated and love the hanging plants by the windows. We tried the Honey Cream Latte, White Chocolate Mocha, Affogato, and the Croiffle (croissant + waffle). We enjoyed the expresso drinks, the affogato was alittle on the sweet side for me. The croiffle was pretty good and beautifully plated. We didn't try any of their other food items since we just had lunch, but we will definitely come back to try the Avocado toast that looks amazing in the photos lol. If you are staying at the Kimpton, now you have choices for your coffee and breakfast. This little place was super cute. And the food is prepared beautifully!! (See picture) And, it is right across the street. I ordered an Americano and the avocado toast. My americano was full flavored (but I did add a shot) :) The avocado toast came out and I was very impressed with the presentation, and the taste. (Ps. I did not know what lemon chèvre was, so be aware that it is a type of goat cheese)-and yummy!! The service was good, no smile, but I will survive. The place is small so it can get a little loud. You know what I like more than coffee shops? NEW coffee shops. Roots is located next to Subway on 5th and J. There's no parking so it's a little much to go to before work so we decided to take a break yesterday and walk a few blocks from the office to check it out. As soon as we went inside, my eyes immediately went to all the toasts they had in the display case. I loved that they had different toasts instead of just the annoyingly popular avocado. Not an avocado fan - fight me. They had all the essential coffees including some fancy ones that I definitely need to come back and try! Coffee Shake, Nitro Shake, Shakarato! I settled on an Iced Latte Mint Macchiato and my boss ordered the Honey Cream Latte. Both were good - I liked the Honey Cream better, but I loved that the Macchiato only had a hint of mint and wasn't overloaded. They have different flavored Kombuchas too and plenty of seating inside. Staff was friendly and patient as we drooled over the toasts for a while before placing our orders! They had a chicken sandwich that looked pretty tasty too! Decided to try this place today instead of walking to Starbucks. Ordered an iced honey cream latte and everything bagel with cream cheese. Coffee is amazing. Honey on coffee is new to me but it works wonderfully. Not overly sweet like caramel drinks from SB. Service was great. She was quick and very friendly. Ambiance is nice too. I went to Roots Coffee with my wife on a Saturday afternoon. She had an almond milk latte with Splenda - because they didn't have agave - and i had an espresso with 1/2&1/2 on ice. They do not roast their own beans. We sat on a sofa, which was nice. We were able to sit close together and enjoy each other's company. The coffee was fine, nothing special, not terrible. What got to me over the 1 1/2 hours we were there was the music. Nothing but singer-songwriters with acoustic guitars. I don't go to coffee shops for the music, but at some point it just insisted upon itself. I hope they have other music, because i had enough. The ambiance here is great! Beautiful decor, clean, very nice. They are clearly dog friendly as they keep complimentary treats for your furry friend on hand! I got the Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shakarato & my husband got an iced latte with simple syrup. He likes his latte! Mine was ok. If I did it again, I'd probably get the iced brown sugar Oatmilk latte. The shakarato has more milk in it and I think that threw the taste off for me. What I really needed was something to hold my kids and I over before we had a real meal. We were in the area so I turned to Yelp to help me figure out where we're going. The good reviews and pretty food pictures sold me. Specifically, I was hoping to get a delicious avocado toast for myself and croiffles for the kids (sounded so interesting!). We parked in a nearby paid parking garage, walked over to Roots, but sadly, found out that the only food they had was limited to just a few baked goods (mostly vegan) and some parfaits/overnight oats. I asked if they had any other items and was told this was it. I wasn't going to leave and start the search all over with my kids in tow. Ended up buying 3 different baked items to give us something to curb our appetites. None of the items were standouts. My vanilla latte was weak and unmemorable. The only nice thing about this place was the cleanliness and pretty interior. Everything else was lacking - selection, taste, customer service. Will not be returning. Too bad Yelp was misleading this time... goes to show that writing updated reviews is so helpful to others! I truly enjoyed this place, but I went in this morning for a coffee with my dog, and the woman told me, "You can wait outside, and I'll bring out your drink." I thought this was rude because she didn't even ask if my dog was a service dog. Walking around the DOCO area, showing my big brother around who was in town visiting, we decided we needed a little caffeine boost. I had Roots Coffee bookmarked and we decided to give it a try. Wanting to support a small local business, we were thrilled with our experience. The interior is very chic and modern and I wish that we had been able to stay and enjoy our beverage in the ambience (stupid COVID). The barista was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and patient with me as I was trying to make up my mind on my order. I opted for a flavored iced latte - hazelnut with oat milk. This is hands-down one of the best lattes I have ever had. My brother ordered their nitro coffee and said the same thing about his. The one big bummer is parking - you either have to park in a garage and walk or find (distant) street parking and walk. It is not easily accessible from the street because of the Golden One arena and downtown traffic patterns. But the next time you find yourself in the area wanting a special coffee treat, take the few extra minutes to come out of your way and try Roots Coffee. read more

I've visited Roots Coffee three times now and it keeps getting better. I wouldn't call myself a coffee expert by any means, but I can tell a good cup when I taste one. Sure, you have your usual coffee shop options like pastries, but they serve a whole host of classy snacks, too. From tuna melts, avocado toast and pesto pizza to chicken sandwiches and yogurt parfait, there is something for everyone. I'm a particular fan of the extra healthy and fresh Garden & Grains salad, which comes with diced raw vegetables, mixed grains, a house vinaigrette dressing, orange pieces and mediterranean oven-roasted chicken. The beans and brewing skills they offer here are exceptional and more than enough to impress. A friend and I stopped by here a few weeks back as our interest was piqued by their stylish farm-to-fork images on their site of their sandwich and cafe goodies. I ended up getting a honey latte and a croiffle, which was a bit on the small side, but it was only $3. I also got a ricotta toast in addition to the croiffle since I was pretty hungry and hadn't eaten breakfast. Served on thick toast, this concoction was quite tasty as well.
