Loved stumbling upon Roscoe's. I walked in after 1pm on a Wednesday and it wasn't busy at all. Perhaps I missed the rush or perhaps it's an under appreciated establishment. I stayed consistent with my week-long bbq venture in town and got just ribs and burnt ends. They were up there with some of the best in town. The sauce was different, as was the rub. Maybe a little more pepper in it? Definitely darker. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. I would encourage everyone to give this place a try. I'll be back when I'm in town. read more

Man I miss this place... I came out on a business trip to Legend's Outlet and being from San Diego had to try some legitimate Kansas City BBQ. I used Yelp to find the closest and highest rated to my hotel and decided upon Roscoes due to the 5 star reviews, no matter how few. I am beyond glad that I did because it was phenomenal, the pulled pork was perfect and I tried burnt ends for the first time and was blown away. Roscoes BBQ Sauce was perfectly smokey and if I ever go back to KC this will be my go to spot. I loved it so much I went in the day after with 3 KC locals that I was working with and they all said it was comparable to their favorite BBQ spots throughout the city - one even said Roscoes had the best ribs hes ever had. I have been going here for over 5 years as it's close to where I work. I started reading reviews because their website is currently being updated so I couldn't see if they had anything new. I saw a review from William I, and as he is being honest with his reviews I wanted to respond to it. He's absolutely right...the burnt ends are on point! It sucks that his fries didn't come out as expected as I've never experienced that, but there is a first time for everyone. I like the potato salad but it's not my biggest favorite. Here's the must haves there, the cheesy corn hands down is the best I've EVER TASTED!!!! I don't like cheesy corn bake so don't get the two confused. It's so creamy and so delish that if you like corn, you must try...does not disappoint. Next, the brisket and the OMGOODNESS JALAPENO SAUSAGE...YES PLEASE!!!! Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. Small place - about 35 seats, but while there it looked like they do a fair amount of carry-out as well. As one reviewer mentioned, from the outside it makes you raise an eyebrow a little - not terrible - but once inside it is super clean and spotless. But the food is what it's all about and it was a great combination of very good bbq and very reasonable prices. Ribs were meaty and moist and brisket was top-notch. Beans were very good, a touch sweet, and loaded with bits of meat. The fries were crisp and HOT, as were the onion rings. I wish I could comment more on the sauce, but the ribs and brisket didn't need it. I think they sauced the ribs slightly before serving, but again, the meat was so well done it didn't need it. Very slight smoke taste, not overwhelming like some places...great balance. I like to make the rounds to local barbecue joints and will be back to this one to try some more items! Heard all the hype about this little hole in the wall BBQ place so decided to try it. As soon as you step outside of your car you can smell the BBQ aroma....The enterior is nice and clean and the staff is very nice. I went with my mother and father so we decided to order ribs, turkey, fries, coleslaw, cheese corn, and the BBQ beans. Ribs - Are very tender and meaty. You can taste the smoke immediately and hardly any fat. They cook them with no sauce so if you want sauce you can dip. The BBQ sauce taste like there is hickory. I thought it was really good. Turkey - Was very tendor. I dont like chewy turkey so this was perfect. Thought you could taste the smoke in the turkey without it being overwhelming. Fries - I thought they were ok. A tad over cooked but ok. Coleslaw - Instead of being chunkee they seem to blend it to make it almost like a spread. It had a pretty good taste. Cheese Corn - I have had this at Broebacks in Lenexa and although good here if I compare it it was not as good. BBQ Beans - I think if they added some smokey bits of rib meat or brisket it would make these beans amazing. Jackstack BBQ has the best bean vote from me and these would be a good 8. That was the mistake I made last time I was in, and was greeted by a "ribs sold out" sign on the counter when it was time to place my order. I'm a HUGE fan of Oklahoma Joes, but this place ranks right up there with them. I'm very pleased with the small town BBQ joint that's in my hometown! The ribs are delicious! The meat falls off the bone and melts in your mouth. Great flavor to them as well. My husband says "they need no sauce" as he grubs down. The baked beans have a great smoky flavor with pieces of burnt ends in them. And the NEW menu item "Pork Pie" has my #1 vote hands down. None of the other BBQ joints in KC including Oklahoma Joes serves anything like it. Its Frito chips, baked beans, pulled pork topped with coleslaw...you get a little bit of everything for a decent price!! Its a small business but does have booths and some tables. I have yet to eat here. So why 5 stars? To help offset the idiots giving any bad reviews on a place that gets mostly 5 star reviews. I will be trying them out this week while we are in town but just pissed about all of the whiners that love to trash places on a regular basis not realizing how much Yelp reviews can hurt business. Complaints about a BBQ business that runs out of food. You know who runs out of food? Really good BBQ places that don't want to microwave food the next day. Get over it already and stop whining. I really can't say enough great things about Roscoe and his yummy bbq. I called on a Wednesday afternoon asking for enough bbq to cater for 20 people the following Saturday. The friendly girl who answered the phone told me to please hold, she needed to get Roscoe. Which I thought was awesome, the fact he works in the kitchen even though he's very successful. Love it. Roscoe was (and is) super helpful through the ordering process. I wasn't sure how much meat to order, he helped. He also recommended the beans which was a HUGE hit. Probably the best beans I've tried in KC. He also gave great instructions on reheating the meat (we needed the food on a day the restaurant was closed). Even after a few beers, I easily managed reheating it and it was delish. Everyone loved it. Our family is from the KC area and frequently enter bbq contests and events but this bbq was a huge hit with them. Oddly, they had never heard of it before. GET THE BURNT ENDS. And beans. It's been a few months since my visit to Roscoe's, but I made good notes right after my meal. First let me say that "Fall off the bone" ribs are not my style. I like the meat, even though completely smoked/cooked, to put up a little fight from the bone. Roscoe's ribs were in my opinion too greasy, not very large, and the meat on the bone not very thick. Very average ribs, but consistent I'm afraid with many of my rib experiences in Kansas City . On the other hand, Roscoe's burnt ends were good, meaty but tender, not too fatty. Take my advice and seek it out. I agree it may be a KCK address but to me it is in Edwardsville. The dining room is small but clean. A real home town diner feel.Staff was attentive and friendly. Now lets get to the food. The smell of smoked meat envelopes you in the parking lot when arriving. The menu is posted above the ordering counter, with quite few options. We ended up ordering the Dinner Special where you pick your meats mix or match pulled pork, beef, turkey, burnt ends or ham..Add ribs too for only $2 more. Burnt ends were outstanding. tender and moist, with only the outer skin blackened...yet still flavorful. Dunked in sauce it was a taste sensation. Turkey was moist and smoky in its flavor. Pulled pork was extremely tender and fat free, nice smoky taste. The fries were in a huge basket and screaming hot from the cooker. Had to let them cool before you could handle them. We asked the owner if they cut their own fries, because they tasted so fresh, but she said they were not. One side with the dinner special was enough for two people. In fact there was so much food, we had to ask for a doggie bag. Both of us opted to sample the cheesy corn which had a ample portion of ham chunks,mixed in crisp sweet corn, drenched in a thick cheesy sauce. We were told this diner has been open about a year. I would definitely recommend any Barbeque lover to give it a try, especially if you are a western metro dweller. A short drive keeps you away from the speedway cluster or the drive back into the city, and gives you stellar food that rivals the in town big name places, at a reasonable price. At the advice of a fellow Yelper I went to this place for a business lunch and came away smelling like a campfire and belching smoke like an old locomotive. : ) The non-advertised, spartan, next-to-a-gas-station, KCK-but-should-be-Edwardsville location was right up my alley. Give me some meat, s'il vous plait. The trinity, for me... burnt ends, brisket, and my beloved pork ribs. BTW, this is artisanal, limited production Q. Don't go here set on one thing. They may be out of it. That is a good thing in my book. The trinity came and worship began without delay. I ate like a factory machine. Like a farm plow. The ends were the best I have had so far in KC. Fresh carved. Lean in most cases. Actually burnt. Seasoned. Smoky. And tender. Damn... they are better than mine!!! Then the brisket. Again the best taste so far for me in KC. Tender. Smoky. And completely absent of fat. All meat baby! And both beef products retained the essence of the meat. Beautiful. The ribs might be better than Smokin' Guns, my favorite... until today. As a last rights meal choice, I am stickin' to the St Louis cut masterpiece called ribs that are served up here. Firm. Yet yielding and tender. Not too fatty. Smoky. Seasoned just right. Sides of cheesy corn and beans were good, but casual observers to my meat eating prowess. (+) Location - This little new kid on the BBQ scene is tucked away behind a gas station. If you find this offensive, I don't think we'd get along. (+) Libations - Coors original anyone? Not my favorite, but it feels right for Roscoe's. (+) Ribs - Simply triumphant. Somehow they explode with smoky flavor, and linger with subtle spice. Tasty before you even sauce them, and magical after. Unparalleled tenderness and moisture retention. (+) Pulled Pork - More of the same greatness. A bit saltier than the ribs (as it should be with pig), but carrying the same mix of smoke and spice. Fortunately, the pork flavor is not overwhelmed here. I was snacking on pork bits like potato chips. (+) Sauce - Classic KC style sauce with a bit more complexity than most. Being a devotee of AB's sauces, I wouldn't call Roscoe's the best sauce in town. Nevertheless, the hot sauce behind the desk is more than competent. (+) Slaw - The coleslaw is stone cold great. They add minced pickles and some spicing nuances to tweak a classic. It really worked well with bites of pulled pork. (+) Onion Rings - Solid. Standard fare, but very crispy. I like to shovel them in their hot sauce and some blue cheese dressing. (-) White Bread - Who eats the bread anyway? THE BOTTOM LINE: (+) Whatever your favorite BBQ joint is, Roscoe's might just usurp it. read more

4.5 stars (oh so close to 5!) I decided to make one last BBQ run before I left the KC area for good, and I'm glad that Roscoe's was one of the last BBQ joints I dined at. Roscoe's has the second best pork ribs in KC (second, in my opinion, after Oklahoma Joe's) - which is saying something in this city. They're not quite as smokey or seasoned as well as OKJ, but they're incredibly tender and fall-off-the-bone.They are also very reasonably priced in comparison ($9/half slab, $16/full). And their burnt ends? Probably my favorite to date in KC; filled with smoke and just the right amount of fat and bark remaining to make each bite a lusciously satisfying experience. The only down side is that I don't care for their sauce much (it's not offensive but very standard and sweet), but that's easy to forget as you chew through that beefy goodness... Don't be intimidated by the isolated gas station location. The place is rather clean inside and the staff are really friendly. The one thing I learned in KC was that no one BBQ joint can do everything right. Roscoe's has burnt ends and pork ribs in their back pocket, which is no easy feat for KC BBQ. So I'm breaking one of my rules. Generally I won't write a review about a place after one visit. Roscoe's has inspired me to be a rebel. First let me say that I must have a love for BBQ joints that are close to or inside of gas stations. Secretly I became excited as I got closer and saw that it shared a sign with the gas station. I can't explain it. I'm a weirdo. Anyhoo, it's a little quaint place, no frills, just how BBQ should be. Today's special was a jalapeño smoked sausage. It was pretty tasty. They also have a cheesy corn that was really good. For me, the star was the burnt ends. Oh how I long to have great burnt ends. So often I order burnt ends and they aren't burnt ends. They are just little cubes of meat that are masquerading as burnt ends. Then I am disappointed and then comes anger. Not here though, they were delicious. My mom even exclaimed that she clearly had been missing out on eating them as she proceeded to eat all of mine. The portions are generous, the staff was friendly and it was surprisingly fast. Here's the great thing about Kansas City BBQ. Just about the time you think you've found your all-time favorite, some little joint comes along and takes a meat cleaver to your opinion. Roscoe's delivered up a plate of ribs today equal to, or dare I say better than Oklahoma Joe's or any other world class KC smokehouse, with sides of beans and cheese corn that were marvelous. A friend had a BBQ beef sandwich and fries. The fries are very good, but not in OJ's league (easily the best BBQ fries in the area). White bread? Why yes, as it should be, thank you. Getting the rib meat to stick to the bone so you can pick it up and gnaw off the meat yet it's tender, juicy and moist is the goal. Falling off tender, but not falling off the bone--that's the mark of a great plate of ribs. I dare say I've seen very few do any better, and my friend and I hit a new place every two weeks year around on the average. Roscoe's deserves a spot among the heavy hitters in Kansas City BBQ in my opinion, yet it's located on the outskirts of tiny Edwardsville west of Kansas City, Kansas. The meat is (as it should be) smokey, tender, juicy, not overly salted which so many do, and very flavorful. Their sauce is a bit runny, heavy on the sweet and smokey side. Just a little will do. Their beans are light years better than Joe's but not on par with other excellent providers like Rosedale. You know you've hit a great plate of ribs when you find yourself chewing on the soft end to get more good taste. Those ribs. I'll be thinking about those late tonight. I had my last meal around noon today and I'll sleep peacefully tonight. Must return. If you're wanting to avoid the line at Oklahome Joe's and the hype of some other familiar names, Roscoe's is definitely worth the trip out of town for a spectacular BBQ meal. read more
