So I'm breaking one of my rules. Generally I won't write a review about a place after one visit. Roscoe's has inspired me to be a rebel. First let me say that I must have a love for BBQ joints that are close to or inside of gas stations. Secretly I became excited as I got closer and saw that it shared a sign with the gas station. I can't explain it. I'm a weirdo. Anyhoo, it's a little quaint place, no frills, just how BBQ should be. Today's special was a jalapeño smoked sausage. It was pretty tasty. They also have a cheesy corn that was really good. For me, the star was the burnt ends. Oh how I long to have great burnt ends. So often I order burnt ends and they aren't burnt ends. They are just little cubes of meat that are masquerading as burnt ends. Then I am disappointed and then comes anger. Not here though, they were delicious. My mom even exclaimed that she clearly had been missing out on eating them as she proceeded to eat all of mine. The portions are generous, the staff was friendly and it was surprisingly fast. I am already looking forward to going back and sampling more. read more

Here's the great thing about Kansas City BBQ. Just about the time you think you've found your all-time favorite, some little joint comes along and takes a meat cleaver to your opinion. Roscoe's delivered up a plate of ribs today equal to, or dare I say better than Oklahoma Joe's or any other world class KC smokehouse, with sides of beans and cheese corn that were marvelous. A friend had a BBQ beef sandwich and fries. The fries are very good, but not in OJ's league (easily the best BBQ fries in the area). White bread? Why yes, as it should be, thank you. Getting the rib meat to stick to the bone so you can pick it up and gnaw off the meat yet it's tender, juicy and moist is the goal. Falling off tender, but not falling off the bone--that's the mark of a great plate of ribs. I dare say I've seen very few do any better, and my friend and I hit a new place every two weeks year around on the average. Roscoe's deserves a spot among the heavy hitters in Kansas City BBQ in my opinion, yet it's located on the outskirts of tiny Edwardsville west of Kansas City, Kansas. The meat is (as it should be) smokey, tender, juicy, not overly salted which so many do, and very flavorful. Their sauce is a bit runny, heavy on the sweet and smokey side. Just a little will do. Their beans are light years better than Joe's but not on par with other excellent providers like Rosedale. You know you've hit a great plate of ribs when you find yourself chewing on the soft end to get more good taste. Those ribs. I'll be thinking about those late tonight. I had my last meal around noon today and I'll sleep peacefully tonight. Must return. If you're wanting to avoid the line at Oklahome Joe's and the hype of some other familiar names, Roscoe's is definitely worth the trip out of town for a spectacular BBQ meal. read more

Not sure where my last review disappeared to - maybe it's a conspiracy? Whatever the case, UFO, Area 51...I'm still pleased to say Roscoe's still has the best tasting burnt ends I have ever put in my mouth and chewed with my teeth! We are talking moist, succulent and smoked to perfection. I think there was about an inch of "bark". Think with me...a crunchy outside and a moist inner meaty flavour. Kudos to you! Roscoe's is about as good as it gets outside the realm of competition BBQ. Everyone knows of the Big three (Oklahoma Joes, Arthur Bryant's, Gates) and those other folks who follow closely behind (Jack Stack, LC's, Smokin Guns). Roscoe's is a new name, in a less than prime location. That doesn't detract from the food whatsoever however. Admittedly, I don't necessarily think roscoe's is for everyone. I believe a fellow yelper described roscoe's as artisan bbq. I think that is a proper description. It's not that roscoe's does off the wall things like RJ's BBQ shack for example. They do however do things a little bit differently and with a little more pride than most. I can't pinpoint what it is they do differently however. It is my personal opinion that the type of wood and rub they use is a little bit different than most. Roscoe's has it's own flavor, and there is a lot of it. This is a good thing. However, if you don't jive with they flavors they present you, you won't like the food. Roscoe's is making a statement. Part of that statement is not hiding their bark. Boy do they have bark. Boy is that bark delicious. Boys and girls, they are unashamed to give you bark on their burnt ends. In fact, if you come here, you better be getting beef and or some burnt ends. I'm not a big beef fan (I prefer my bbq pork heavy) but roscoe's has made me a believer. I was going to give roscoe's four stars. But then I thought about their beef, and their burnt ends. Everything else on roscoe's menu is four star fare, which is very good for here in Kansas City. You have to work very hard to get into the four star category. But their beef, with its copious amounts of flavor and bark is in it's own league. You have heard about Oklahoma Joe's burnt ends. You guys need to hear about Roscoe's. So make the drive to Roscoe's. Get some of their beef. Ask for some of their hot bbq sauce which they keep under the counter. The only thing Roscoe's could stand to do better is their consistency. I've had some days where things are a little dry. This however is not the norm. Don't take my word for it. Go try it. Take a bite and smile. Then, take a few friends with you. Tell them to come back with some of their friends. This place deserves to be known. It deserves to be named with the big names. If they keep doing things the way they have been, it's only a matter of time. read more

Damn good KC BBQ. As soon as I stepped out of my car the smell hit me and I knew I was about to have a great meal. I ordered the two meat plate with ribs and burnt ends with slaw and beans. The ribs were a grand slam. You could see the meat falling off the bone just sitting there. Some of the best ribs I've ever had. The burnt ends were all extremely tender and juicy. Not dry at all. I feel like they were missing a little something past the initial flavor of the first few bites. Still, compared to most burnt ends that are half dry these were excellent. The sides were great as well. I loved the slaw and the beans were definitely some of the best I've had. Very sweet and saucy with some good size chunks of meat. At points I felt the beans were a bit too sweet, but you won't hear me complain about that. Overall I'd put this small town KC BBQ right up there with the big boys. read more

What a dive but what a meal! A co-worker suggested this gem and it paid off tremendously. Never would I have ventured in here without the recommendation of another human being. Unfortunately for me, they were not serving their legendary burnt ends the day I dined here so I'll have to check back on another day to try them. KC BBQ is defined by the big boys - Joe's KC, Gates, Bryant's, Jack Stack, etc... We often overlook the little guys with small town street cred but not a lot bravado. Roscoe's satisfies this end, A tiny dive of a BBQ joint is sometimes where you can find the best food. My meal here that included two choices of meat and two sides was less money than 5 ribs at Gates. The quality was also phenomenal. I arrived just in time on a Wednesday afternoon around 11:25 before a line was out the door. Don't miss an opportunity to eat here. I'll definitely be back to try something else. read more

Growing up in Tulsa, I was deprived of good barbeque as a child. No, seriously, we rarely had barbeque and my first real experience was with a Carolina-style joint when I was stationed in Norfolk, VA. Roscoe's is like jumping from junior high straight to the Doctoral Program at MIT. For a small, hole-in-the-wall joint they have AMAZING food! We were in town for the NASCAR race and found them on Yelp (something the folks at Roscoe's proudly show on their front door). We ordered the 'Family Platter #2' with ribs, sliced turkey (they were out of chicken) and pulled pork to go (thus I can't comment on eating in - but the family that runs it had a son doing a great job keeping the dining room clean while mom took orders). The food was AMAZING, perfectly smoked with the best homemade sauce I've ever had. Full disclosure, it reminded me of 'Rufus Teague' which is a gourmet sauce, but had several marked differences. Since I'm such a Rufus fan, it probably the reason I liked it so much. The slaw was very good, and the baked beans were heavenly especially with the bits of burnt ends in it. Since it is the only KC barbeque joint I've eaten at, I can't rate it compared to others. However, if it is the stick that all other joints are measured against, the bar is set pretty bleedin' high! read more

We were headed to a Sporting KC game and decided to continue our tradition of BBQ before a soccer game. We checked out Papa Bob's last time (just down the road), so Roscoe's was up this time. We arrived a little before dinner time, and the small place was about half-full. As soon as we ordered food, the place started to get busy and we got one of the last tables. Wow. Absolutely delicious! I decided to take a chance on Roscoe's based upon the positive yelp reviews, and boy am I glad I did! I arrived at Roscoe's on a Friday night at around 6:20. (Note, there was a sign on the counter noting that the dining room closed at 6:40...heads up) In order to sample as much of the menu as possible, I ordered the two item dinner plate (added ribs for $3). I chose the cheesy corn and beans as my two sides. All of this, and a fountain drink came to right around $16.50. The ribs were phenomenal...fall off the bone moist, and delicious smoke flavor. The pulled pork and brisket were amazing as well. It was definitely a lot of food. The sides were incredible. I wish I would have gotten TWO sides of the cheesy corn, it really is that good. Continuing on my search for the best Q in the KC area, I had the opportunity to check out Roscoe's. This a bit out of the way place was a diamond in the rough. Very clean inside and the food did not disappoint. Trying my preferred fare of burnt ends and ribs with beans and slaw, Roscoe's would be a place I would return to, if in the Edwardsville area. The meats were served without sauce (preferred). The burnt ends were very good. Each piece had a touch of juice and moisture left as oppossed to being cooked dry. The ribs were a tad overcooked, but the flavor was very good. The beans were above average with a touch a spice, but the coleslaw was just average. Roscoe's is in my top three for traditional KC Barbecue. Everyone has preferences, and for me Roscoe's has the best burnt ends by far. They come out perfect and need nothing but a fork. Their backed beans are the 2nd best in the city and ribs are right near the top as well. BBQ sauce is a huge preference issue, but Roscoe's has a very unique sauce. It's darker and richer tasting than other places in town with what I think is a heavier molasses flavor. I never eat it, because my food at Roscoe's never needs it. It's almost always perfect as is. Picking my favorite BBQ in KC is like picking a favorite child; it really depends on the day and how I'm feeling. Roscoe's is definitely in the mix, but has that "forgotten middle child" vibe. It'll probably never have the big name recognition, but it's amazing stuff. The only thing to worry about is the AC vents in the floor. The cheesy corn was so creamy and delicious with chunks of ham. Their son even gave us a ride back to our hotel bc it was difficult to get a taxi. Roscoe's BBQ is a tiny bbq place in Edwardsville. There are about 10 tables inside, so its not set up to handle a lot of people. However, they seem to handle it okay. Wait for my group was about 10 minutes after ordering. The menu they have is quite small, but at least they're doing it right. Ordered the dinner for two to split. The only caveat is the amount of meat was quite small. Had the burnt ends and pulled pork, all of which could fit into a sandwich. There were a lot of fries though at least. In all, there was enough for one person with a large appetite or two people with small appetites. Can't complain about how it was cooked. The meats were cooked well. Looks like if I come back here, better off ordering the meats by the pound instead of the dinner for two. It costs a little more, but looks like you get a lot more. Food is actually excellent. However, the business is horribly run which is the reason for the 2 stars. The hours are limited and the last several times that I've been there, they have been closed during regular business hours. Running out of food here and there is understandable... but when it becomes a regular thing, it's time to do something different. As much as my family likes the food, they have lost us as customers. Rivals Joes KC for best bbq in the Dotte. The burnt ends are excellent. The ribs and the jalapeno sausage are very good. The pork frito pie. Sweet potato fries. Really a hidden gem of Wyco that many in KC are missing out on. Closed on Sat and Sun really sucks, I think many dont get to come because of that. Closes at 7pm during the week makes it difficult too. I think Danny Edwards closing at 2-3pm or when sold out kinda started the trend of some KC bbq's running their hours around when their meat sells out which is good and bad. Love to get the hot and fresh, but sucks not open when convenient for you alot of times. I say about Roscoes, get over there when its open, right around noon or 5pm when its hot and fresh. I loved this place their food is great, their hours are terrible they're just not open very much anymore. Close at three on Monday at five every other day and aren't open on weekends at all. So you can basically eat lunch there but they close for dinner unless you're an early bird. read more

So this place looks a little sketch from the outside - off the beaten path next to a gas station - but completely worth going inside anyway! On a recent trip through the area, Hubs and I wanted to find good barbecue near our hotel. This place came up on Yelp and we were very glad. I'm in the area for a short work trip. Found this place on yelp and decided to try it. I had the 1/2 pound of pork and the cheesy corn. Overall, I thought everything was great. The customer service was great. The pork was tender and I liked the BBQ sauce that was used. The cheesy corn was my favorite, but that's because I'm a huge fan of corn. But it was cheesy, just like the name says, with small pieces of ham. It was awesome!!! read more
