My extended family dined at Rosebud for dinner on a Monday evening. We had terrible service, waiting 1 hour and 20 min for our food. We didn't receive drink refills or any manager or waitress coming by to check on us during this time. We eventually sought out the manager who was not very helpful. Finally our food appeared and tasted fine. Then the manager told our kids to sit down (of which they got up and bounced around for a second after sitting for 1.5 hours waiting patiently) which is totally fine. They shouldn't be up and in the way. But then the manager proceeded to talk rudely about us to another manager right next to our table. My husband told him to stop talking about us and then he came after my husband. Yelling at him in his face. My husband didn't take to that well and stood up and raised his voice as well. Which then ensued in a yelling match and my husband walking out. The manager then was very unkind to me when I was speaking calmly about the entire evening to the other manager. He snickered at me and continued to yell at me as I stayed calm. I would never come here again or recommend it to anyone. What can I say other than you need to be filthy rich to eat at Rosebud. What I was really shocked at was 3 stuffed mushrooms were $11.00 and they weren't good, had a fishy taste! Minestrone was bad, Mona Lisa salad was just a salad and they left all the long stems on the spinach, 6 cheese raviolis were $17.00 not $15.00 as I previously posted. No, this place is not for us anymore. I do not recommend eating here, too expensive and the food was not good at all. read more

We arrived for our 6 o'clock dinner reservation at about 555 and were seated at a table immediately. Coco, our server, took very good care of us. My friend had a cocktail and I had a glass of wine and we chatted for about 15 minutes before deciding what to order. We shared a Caprese salad which had the largest slices of tomatoes I've seen in a very long time. Generous slices of fresh mozzarella, basil and wonderful balsamic. The bread on the table was warm and the basket included heavily seeded crackers. Olive oil and parmesan on the table. My friend ordered chicken Milanese which came with a side of pasta, some greens on the plate and a half lemon. I had the chicken Vesuvio which was 2 halves of a very large chicken breast, roasted potatoes and peas. Garlicky and delicious. I actually prefer chicken Vesuvio on the bone but this was very good. We each had another glass of wine. Service was not rushed. All in all excellent. read more

This place needs customer service training for the front staff. We get takeout from here occasionally but this is the last time for a while. They screwed up the order pickup time, so the food wasn't even cooking when I arrived. All I got was blank stares from 4 people. Not an honest apology, not an attempt to do right, nothing. We we are here tonight for dinner. We had a big group and a baby with us. Our waitress was named Ashley and she was awesome! Ashley was so polite and professional- we felt like royalty! Haven't been here in over a year because our last visit was not enjoyable. I was so hoping to have a good experience this time so this restaurant could be back on our regular rotation of places to eat - we eat out 4-5 times a week. We really like the atmosphere at the bar and the bartender was very friendly. The food however was so subpar. Minestrone soup had absolutely no taste or kick to it. The shrimp scampi appetizer was the strangest presentation I have ever seen. Three gigantic shrimp (too large to not be over cooked and generally unappetizing to look at) on toast with a very bland sauce. Sent it back and bartender took it off our bill and gave us a glass of wine - very good service from him, but does not make up for the quality of food. Also the prices are so high - they have definitely been raised significantly since our last visit. Not sure what is happening to the Rosebud brand (our last visit to the downtown location was mediocre as well- they used to be the gold standard of Italian restaurants but times are changing read more

Really tried to look past the horrible service we received while in the restaurant but I just opened my to go bag that was supposed to contain an entire lasagna that I ate ONE bite of to find a to go box of someone else's rolls and no lasagna. So not only am I out $20 for lasagna I have some else's half eaten food which is honestly disgusting considering all that's going on. Our server was frankly incompetent and was visibly so upset and angry that the person who sat us took our drink order that she was unable to focus almost the entire meal. The irony is he was trying to help her since she was "overwhelmed" as she stated but instead of just letting him get the drinks she decided to let that work her up for our entire meal and she insisted on re-taking the drink order which she then messed up. I served for 10 years so I'm no stranger to being short staffed etc, but it just really doesn't excuse this level of incompetence. I'm honestly floored this woman told us we couldn't box our own food and then basically stole my lasagna and gave me some half eaten rolls in its place, if I didn't want my lasagna so bad right now I'd be laughing at the absurdity of this but now it's 11pm and I don't have dinner because your server can't box up food. I've accidentally thrown away a meal that I was supposed to box up as a server, I apologized profusely and comped the meal. The signature Chicken Vesuvio was so disappointing! It lacked flavor, texture was rubbery, and chicken breasts (only) sliced as thinly as deli-cuts. The potatoes were soggy and flavorless. The entire meal lacked the Vesuvio garlic burst which put the Rosebud franchise on the map. If you want flavor, go elsewhere! read more

The restaurant was empty, I arrived at 2:00 pm, looking for a carry out or to sit outside. I travel with a certified therapy dog. Both the hostess and host/ manger were on the phone. The host never looked up or acknowledged my presence. The RUDE hostess, while she was still on the phone, decided to reprimand me for having a dog, still not getting off the phone. I told her the dog was a therapy dog and licensed and can be there. She held up her finger to silence me and pointed to the phone. She was rude, extremely unfriendly and has no clue how to be "in service". I walked outside and waited for 5 minutes. I got in my car and left. Rosebud is a great neighborhood restaurant. The food and service is consistently good whether dining in or taking out. The portions are fresh and quite shareable. We had baked ziti that had generous pieces if sausage and a spicy red sauce. I'd also recommend the pizza, brick chicken or any of the pastas or salads. Unsanitary and added unordered items to the bill!! When we were seated, a bread basket was brought to our table that had a bite taken out of it. I can understand that mistakes happen, but having eaten food brought to our table is disgusting. Not sure why I gave the place a second chance from the get go, but I did. The waiter didn't even so much as apologize, but brought out a new basket. When I called the manager today to complain he was incredibly rude, and accused me of lying. I could hear a gentlemen in the background, as he had me on speaker, say "Their meal was fine. I was the manager on duty. Just f*ckin hang up." This restaurant also over-charged my grandmother (which was the main purpose for my call) and then refused to provide an itemized list of what we ordered. They added items to our bill that we did not order. Avoid this place like the plague, because you're likely to catch it after eating there. One star is way too much! HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! What were they THINKING?? Highland Park was such a wonderful place all the way around, we loved it there. Atmosphere is Horrible!! Lacks everything, warmth, mood, etc. Looks like a Farm Breakfast Place. Tables are JAM PACKED in tight to maximize every square inch, chairs are right up against each other. There's one long booth running along one wall with the chair on the other side, so you or your guest ends up in a chair facing the wall. Extremely LOUD!!! We could not hear each other at our table and had to lean forward and shout. We basically screamed "WHAT DID YOU SAY?" throughout dinner. Service is Extremely SLOW!! (1 Hr-45 Min for dinner!! - and we got there at 4 PM when it was mostly empty. 5:30 it was packed). Just getting our dessert took over 20 minutes. I asked the guy if they were making it from scratch, he said no. Then I'm thinking, how long does it take to bring a glass-filled dessert from Point A to Point B. Speaking of Dessert, we had Apple Pie (served in a cup) which tasted like liquid apple pie. The waiter did say "sorry" when I complained - but no offer to deduct it from our check. Prices are expensive for what you get ($120 with tip for dinner for 3 - no drinks) I don't mind spending good money - but for that money I want more than just food on a plate. Wow. My daughter wanted to come here for her 14th birthday so my wife and I brought 12 girls and we sat separately. I am not a picky eater at all but the food was actually not good. I will say that the wait staff and people working were great. We started with the bruschetta which we order all the time and make at home. When I took a bite the tomatoes were freezing cold, and the bread was hard a cold - I am not even slightly exaggerating. I was kind of shocked it was so bad. I told him it must have been a mistake and maybe an order got put in the fridge - I couldn't figure out what happened. He brought another out and the same thing. It was really inedible. We ordered the eggplant salad which may sound nasty but the person next to us ordered it and it looked awesome. It had great potential, but the eggplant in the arugula was cold and seemed like it was cooked much earlier. We also split a pizza which was just okay. We started talking to the table next to us and the guy and his son also thought the food was not God at all. The kids seemed to poke everything. We orders 7 meals and 2 pizzas for them but our meal was not good. I have only been to rosebud one other time and was originally shocked to see the restaurant with open tables at 8pm. Just a bad meal. The kicker for me was after the meal. I'm not much of a complainer so just paid my full bill but wanted the manager to know the food was not good as a courtesy to him. He said the bruschetta tomatoes are stored in the fridge but didn't seem to care that his restaurant is serving the shittiest most inedible bruschetta. Since he didn't seem to care, I didn't bother to tell him about the eggplant that was clearly cooked earlier. All in all - no way we're coming back. We had a nice time and the kids had a blast but too many great spots and if the manager doesn't care, no chance of improvement. read more

The eggplant was bland and under seasoned and when we requested olive oil instead of marinara on our side of pasta we were told NO SUBSTITUTIONS. The side of pasta was raw. We live in Deerfield and have enjoyed the food at the Highland Park location (we mostly get takeout). So we decided to give the new location a try, even though the ratings have been so bad. Well! I learned my lesson! Always trust your fellow Yelpers! We had a pretty bad experience there tonight (a Wednesday). I first arrived there by myself, while I waited for my husband to drop off our 3 year old son, so that we can have a mother-son dinner date. (My husband had another engagement.) The host informed me that they are "booked" and to just let him know when my dining companion arrived. So I asked him whether we can just sit at the bar and start ordering (you maximize your time when you are visiting a restaurant with a toddler). He said yes so I took a seat at the bar and ordered my food with the friendly bartenders. As the food arrived, and as I ordered a kids' milk for my soon-to-arrive son, the bartender realized that my companion is three years old, and informed me that it is against Illinois law to sit at a bar unless you are 21. I was surprised about that but was willing to move to a table if they had one. The bartender proceeded to notify the host of the situation. At this point my son arrived and so we just stood next to our food at the bar, and waited. Another waiter saw us standing there looking at our food, with my son squirming and eager to start eating, told us to just go ahead and sit down, that he will tell the host that it is ok, knowing it won't take us long. Two minutes after we started eating. The host came up to me, and basically said in an accusatory tone, that I did not tell him my son is 3, and it is against the law to sit at the bar. I explained to him that I had NO idea there is such a regulation, that no one asked, so i just did not think I needed to tell him, but I am willing to move. Since the restaurant is extremely loud, I had to raise my voice to be heard. The host then asked me to "calm down", and told me that I have "elevated this to an unnecessary level". I wasn't even remotely angry before he said that, and was simply attempting to defend myself, so it was just really unpleasant to be told by the host that somehow I am losing my cool, when I was not. After this interchange, they placed us at a table. At one point, an older man who works there next to the host came up to us to see how we are doing. I explained to him what happened and he merely semi-acknowledged the situation and acted like he was really not that interested to find out why I was displeased. The only person who showed concern was the first bartender who took my order. So, if you want top-notch customer service. Forget about this restaurant. OK, the food: we only ordered the Fusilli Carbonara so can only comment on this dish. Carbonara in general is NOT a difficult dish to execute: you have the bacon, the peas, the mushrooms, the cream...how can it be bad? Unfortunately, they delivered a truly lackadaisical dish with a watery sauce...and that is BAD for fusilli because that means the sauce is not clinging to the noodles. The result? Bland noodles, semi-tasty sauce. Also, everyone was completely correct in that it is EXtremely loud in there. There is NO way to talk to even a dining partner across from you without yelling. As we were leaving, other patrons who were also walking out were saying how much of a relieve it was to leave the restaurant and be out of the noise. Too bad! Deerfield is in general super pathetic when it comes to restaurant offerings, so we had high hopes. ...Sigh... Back to cooking at home... read more

I expected quality food when you are paying for quality food. Noodles are obviously store bought, if you're paying $22+ for pasta I expect it to be handmade. Bread was either made awhile ago because it was dry or store bought. Steak was decent but potatoes were absolutely disgusting. The new atmosphere was nice and staff was good, especially Julianne!! Really dissapointed. The wife had been there once so far, and liked it- so we went there for Father's day dinner. The restaurant was way less crowded than the parking lot- I had been avoiding it since there always seems to be too many cars in there, but I think it's more because it's a small lot. The menu was small- and seemed pricey for what was on it. Unfortunately, it was more than *seemed* pricey. I had the Spaghetti Pomodoro- which should be a simple dish of spaghetti in a light butter/garlic sauce, some basil and cherry tomatoes. What I got was a bowl of thick spaghetti that tasted like the box, swimming in grease, with a few onions, about a dozen cherry tomatoes, and a few basil leaves chopped, with an added ingredient of heavy salt. it was greasy enough that, when the waiter helpfully offered to depan it onto my plate, a portion of it landed on the tablecloth, the floor, etc. The service was hot and cold. We were ignored for 10 minutes when we got there, the waiter apologized, saying no one had told him he had a table inside as well as his tables outside. (why would they even ask a waiter to service both the patio and the indoor section is beyond me- shortstaffed?) We ordered some salads, and I ordered the lobster bisque to start. My bisque arrived a good 15 minutes before the salad- although they made a big show of giving us plates for the salad. My spoon had crusted food on it- but the waiter disappeared until the salads came, so by the time I could track down a new spoon, my bisque was cold. He gladly replaced it, which was nice- but the bisque itself was underspiced, and tasted as if it was in a tomato cream base, not a seafood stock- very wrong. I have to admit that I stayed away for as long as I can because of the bad reviews but my husband convinced me that it was still worth a try. We were here tonight for dinner at 5:30 p.m. And while we were the first ones to be seated outside, the place filled up fast! We were greeted promptly and server might not have been the most outgoing guy but he was courteous and attentive. The only complaint I have is that the servings are huge! So either come here hungry or split something because it is family style- I wish that was emphasized; a reminder couldn't hurt. We ordered calamari for appetizers, I ordered the eggplant salad (delicious) and my husband had the pasta special of tagliatelle. We ordered one kid serving of mac and cheese for our 2 girls and that looked creamy and yummy, too! I'm glad we gave this place a try; we will be back! read more

If rating this place by quantity of food it would be off the charts; each entree is large enough to share (don't do that though). My group of three went around 6:00 PM on a Wednesday. The place was almost empty and yet the busboys were so frenetic they kept knocking into my chair. Number one annoyance, check. Stay away from me! I had the chicken milanese which was very good. The bolognese was kind of weak and I did not try the other dish ordered, though it looked great -- caprese with giant tomato slices, red onion, even roasted red pepper. Didn't have a lot of basil, though. We tried the tiramisu for dessert and it was strange. There were layers of...fudge. Portions are HUGE. I guess for that price it's ok, but really, so gluttonous. The desserts are served in ball jars and if you want apple pie, allow like 15 min because they bake it fresh IN the jar. Atmosphere was decent but again it was empty. I'm told when it's full the place is so loud it could wake the dead. Basically they gutted the old B-Square, so it's a giant room with too many tables shoved in. The experience was decent, I won't go back though, and I'm glad I wasn't picking up the bill. Those prices did not deliver satisfaction. read more

I want to give this place a great review - here's the reason. I had an old gift card for Rosebud that I never used and they have since changed the vendor who they use to manage their card service. My card had no value on it, even though I had never used it. I spoke to two managers there about it and they were extremely helpful in getting my dollars reattached to a new card. Big kudos there. So, for my first foray to this Rosebud for food, I opted to do takeout and perused their menu. Was surprised not to see a lasagna offering - seems like I have ordered that at the Schaumburg location and really enjoyed it. Nonetheless, I forged ahead and ordered the baked ziti with crumbled Italian sausage. The good news is the order was promptly brought out after maybe 5-7 minutes. It also was a fairly large order as well. But the downside is that the taste was fair at best - the sausage lacked some of the robust flavor that good dishes like this offer. Also, while the offering was large, at $16 plus tax - it should be! Frankly, I can go to Maggiano's and order the same dish for $9.95 - while their entrée might be a touch smaller, you also receive a second one if dining in from their "Classic Pastas" offering. Plus their ziti has more flavor. I am eager to try this place again - maybe check out a pizza or something. But based on this visit alone, I can't go any higher than three stars - and that kinda includes the "atta-boy" for the positive experience with management regarding my gift card. read more

I never cared for Rosebud's in Highland Park (where I live). The cuisine just wasn't that wonderful, certainly not consistently, and especially at tablecloth prices. Rosebud's in Deerfield is new dining experience. The two owners who have been known to say hello at the door are less than gracious. When there isn't seating, no reservation, rather send you away with sorry, we got, 'Nope. No can do. Hour tops'. The place looks like Baker's square with a darker coat of paint. The seating amounts to rustic wooden tables that wobble. They've packed so many in the one room affair, you are bumped into most often, way too close to the table next to you. When busy, the noise level almost precludes conversation, and every evening so far at least one baby was wailing out of control. Not comfortable/cozy at all. Mostly, the food has been very good, the pasta was aldente, and marinara sauce thick and flavourful. Salads were excellent at $14 for a bowl for two. The Chicken Parmigiana is $20, at The Italian Kitchen, $15. Had desert on a quiet evening there (Tues. night), and had the Tiramisu in a jar, and it was very good. We had a pizza to go for our HPHS senior at home. He and I agreed the zah was, "eh" at best...flat and rather bland. Yeah, even on a slow night the staff manage to bump into my chair/our table several times. I love their Minestrone soup. Perhaps best yet. I ordered a quart to go. Once home, unpacked it all, NO soup. Thus far, I enjoyed the food. I'd recommend Rosebud for lunch when traffic is light, no wait. Avoid busy nights for the sheer decibels alone, and being constantly bumped into. The general feel of the place leaves me cold. As said, looks like they dimmed the lights in Baker's Square. A favourite of my families in Rhapsody Cafe, Deerfield. Perhaps 5 minutes away. The Italian dishes there are outstanding, and reasonably priced. Service is "stunning" and everything is tasty as can be, made smartly with an orientation toward healthy eating.
