Food- great! Cakes- something's gone wrong. We've been eating at Rosine's for 14 years now. Consistently good fare, especially the minestrone, lasagna and the lamb shanks. However they may have changed the recipes for two of their cakes: Lemon-Blueberry- very strange addition of either allspice or cloves and anise. Definite licorice flavor, and a lasting numbing of the tongue. Not a pleasant experience; avoid this cake. Orange-Vanilla- this could be just an over abundance of orange zest sprinkle, but an unpleasant aftertaste. Hopefully these cakes will be revised. Until then, just avoid their desserts. read more

I can only speak for their service and slices of cakes. I stopped by at night for various slices of cakes. The lady who helped me was not necessarily rude but also not the nicest. It was quick though. Some of the pieces she cut were very small and others were huge. I guess they're not consistent in their portions??? I found them to be fluffy and moist but way TOO sweet. I couldn't take more than a few bites. The cakes flavor itself tasted artificial and like a box mix. It wasn't that expensive but I was very disappointed in the quality of it. Rosine's is one of Monterey's best restaurants for good quality home cooking. Long before they were featured on Diner, Dives, and Drive Ins Rosine's was a a favorite of locals. Their Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are all served with more than generous portions that usually send you home with leftovers. Located in the heart of Old Monterey downtown makes it a convenient meeting place, where it is nice to sit in the open French door window seats and watch the people strolling around as you eat. Even on a busy Saturday afternoon with around 90 diners we were served our meals in about 15 minutes. Forgettable how generous the portions were, we each took home half our sandwiches for later. Horrible. One word to describe this awful establishment. Food is overpriced with extravagant descriptions that assume nice meals. Little did we know, we were given the lowest quality and stalest bread, grocery store packaged salad, old ingredients, and frozen chicken. The food here was genuinely the worst I have ever had. not to mention the depressing interior, which was overcrowded with customers and a lack of service. The server was nice though. I wouldn't have even considered writing this review but shortly after I had a very painful stomach ache. A great homestyle Italian restaurant in Old Monterey! Flavortown, indeed! Entrees include soup or salad, so we got straight to business. Chicken parm with their famous minestrone, and lasagna with a green salad for each of us. Great flavor in a chunky, hearty soup along with a pretty standard simple mixed salad. All good so far. The entrees came out and WOW'ed us. Huge portions, including several pieces of garlic bread. The chicken was crispy and cheesy with a nice red sauce. The cream sauce on pasta side was also good. Tasty without being too heavy. The lasagna was really meaty and nicely layered. We got through maybe half of each main dish? You have to save room for all the desserts! All delicious and homemade. My husband and I went to Rosine's for the first time on a busy Friday evening. When we got there they didn't have many tables available and the one table they did have was in an awkward spot right next to a couch. Which I didn't really like. It didn't take long for the waitress to come take our order and for the food to come out. The portion was bigger than I expected but the fettuccine Alfredo that I got was delicious. My husband ordered the chicken Parmesan and he said it was delicious as well. We were stuffed but the cakes looked so good so we got one piece of the raspberry chocolate cake to share and we still couldn't finish it. But to be honest the cake did not meet my expectations. I should've taken pictures, my family and I have been going to Rosine's for 10-15 years! They never have disappointed, so when I recommend a place it has to deliver! Took my new friends out to dinner, with the strength of just their cake display alone they went with my endorsement, they were taken back by their service and the menu items. No-nonsense Italian/ American restaurant with great food, solid portions, and friendly Service. Stopped by here for dinner while in Monterrey with a group of friends. When we arrived the place was pretty crowded - we were told it'd be a thirty-minute wait but it ended up being an hour... The wait aside, this meal was very solid. For a starter we got an order of Onion rings for the table - the onion rings themselves were fairly standard - thick cut and served with ranch. The ranch was really good - it had a little more herbs than your normal Hidden Valley ranch which was a nice touch. For mains, we each got our own entree. I ordered the Caprese Pasta with a side of Minestrone, and the rest of the table had a kid's meal of pasta with meat sauce and sausage, a pesto fettuccine with a side salad, and the braised lamb shank. The minestrone (which was reviewed on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives) was really really good. I honestly could've done a whole bowl of it. It was hearty and meaty. One of the best minestrone soups I've had. The Caprese Pasta was extremely good - it was rich and the sausage that was included was really nice. The Garlic bread it came with was simple but effective - the garlic topping they loaded on it was a perfect blend of buttery, salty and garlicky. Another thing to note - the portion sizes of the entrees are * g e n e r o us * You'll definitely have enough for at least one extra meal Everyone in our group thoroughly enjoyed their meals and, from the few things I was able to try around the table, all the entrees we got were fantastic. Aside from the extended wait for our table, our experience at Rosine's was fantastic. The solid food, on top of the friendly service, definitely made this the best meal we had in Monterrey. The atmosphere was great and even though it was a cold night with a dog so we were seated outside, the burners were warm enough. Service was ok but our waiter wasn't very friendly and it's easy to be forgotten when we're not in the actual restaurant. We got a surf and turf entrée and a penne pasta with meatballs. The surf and turf came with an option of a soup and we originally ordered their clam chowder but it was incredibly salty. Another server switched it for the minestrone soup which was better but had too much cheese dumped in it. The broccoli side was inedible. The pasta was good. We didn't stay for dessert. While the visit wasn't bad and I'm glad I checked it out, it wasn't what I expected and I wasn't wowed. read more

My Family and I were in Monterey and found ourselves hungry. We looked on line and found Rosine's. We walk in and the place was really busy and all the tables were full. We were told they'd be a 30 minute. So as I said earlier the place was packed. We then saw something you don't see everyday . The manager was bussing tables , Bringing out food and filling water glasses. 25 minutes later we got our table. Our server came to our table with a big smile. We had 2 people who needed a special diet needs . She knew all about the dishes they had for them. See kept a eye on and filled our water glasses and made sure we had everything we needed, as did the manager. The food was over the top. I have never seen a manager support his staff they way he did, I'm sorry I lost his card. Our server was Hasio-Wen C We was happy and shared She was new. We never would have known that. It was a perfect afternoon in Monterey with sunny weather in the mid-60's. We decided to sit outside at the sidewalk tables with the sun on our backs. The wait staff was exceptional. Sometimes when you sit outside, you feel forgotten by the staff. Not here! We both ordered Faux-jitos. The concoction was refreshing! My partner ordered a Turkey Dip Sandwich and, for $2 extra, ordered a Caesar Salad. Normally, we would never order a Caesar Salad unless it was prepared tableside. Restaurants will use Sysco bottled salad dressing that should never be called Caesar! Not here! The dressing was made in-house and was perfectly balanced; not too lemony, not too fishy, not too salty, and not too sour. The crouton were made in-house and, again, were the perfect size and texture. The salad was dressed in the kitchen, and YAY, was not overdressed! I could have been happy with just that wonderful crisp salad, but wait... There was more! The turkey was house roasted and sliced, served on lovely sesame-seeded bread that I believe was baked in-house or, at the very least cake from a local bakery. My partner loved it! I ordered the Chicken Parmagiana served on angel hair pasta with marinara instead of Fettuccine Alfredo. This was not a breaded chicken patty from Sysco. Instead, it was a whole chicken breast that was coated with seasoned crumbs and deep-fried. It was run under the salamander to melt the provolone, and then perched atop the pasta. The dish was garnished with fresh chopped flat leaf parsley and a bit of EVOO. It was tender, juicy, and crunchy! The marinara sauce, made in-house of course, was perfectly balanced; tomato-ey, but not too acidic, and not too runny or too thick. I could only eat 1/3 of the dish but I brought home the leftovers for dinner tomorrow night! Rosine's is known for the fabulous layer cakes baked in-house. We were too full, and didn't think about taking a slice to go, darn it! Try Rosine's, and you'll be a lifelong customer like us! read more

Went here on our first night in Monterey. The service was not great for okay food. I don't know if it was because it was close to closing time and it was a full house on a Friday. Our waitress was not welcoming or friendly at all and felt like she was rushing to get our order and get us out of there. She hardly came by our table with the exception of coming by 10 minutes after getting our food to ask if we wanted boxes...I felt rushed! When she asked if we wanted boxes I took the opportunity to ask for a refill on my drink. The hostess helped me find a place to park our stroller so I was grateful for that because I thought we were going to have to leave when they said the only option was closing it and putting it in the corner (I had too much stuff in the bottom storage bin). When I was leaving I couldn't open the door with my stroller and there were 2 staff at the counter, one looked like the manager, not one of them offered to help me open the door and another guest held the door for me. This place is a local faviorite. I have been coming since a child. My go to is always the tuna melt. Side salad with extra croutons. Their croutons are the best! Calamari app, which are the strips are great. Can't miss out on the minnestrone soup. Super hardy, flavorful and warming. Now the LASAGNA is the best thing ever, its always consistent and a large portion. Thee best! Chicken parm is great as well. Cajun pasta just isn't cajun, the seasoning is different, more of like 5 spice. It was defienetly misssing the cajun/blackened taste. Also the corn throws it off. This restaurant is located downtown with parking nearby. We arrived on a Sunday around 11 am. There was a 15 minute wait which went by fast due to waiting in a long line for the bathroom. We were sat at the end of the booth to the left of the restaurant. The seat of the booth was not attached so it would move forward and backwards. We didn't have to wait long to be greeted and served. We ordered right away. As we waited for our order, I went inside and looked at all the beautiful desserts in the case. This was our first time here. It was packed. Service started a bit slow but no big deal we weren't in a hurry. Nice ambiance. We ordered the chicken parm and the chicken piccata. We added soup and salad for $8. The minestrone was excellent. The Caesar was good it had homemade croutons. The entrees were bland. The pictures of these entrees looked so amazing with rave reviews but honestly they fell flat. The portions are large, we barely ate half of the food. We took the remaining entrees to go as well as piece of key lime pie, it was gigantic. We gave the entrees to a homeless man on the way back to our hotel. I was looking forward to trying this place but unfortunately it did not live up to my expectations. We had the calamari to start and I was not a fan of the taste we decided not to finish eating that. I had the lasagna which was okay, I thought there was too much Parmesan on top possibly aged which I like but it just took away from the dish. Portion was also smaller than expected. My friend had the lamb shake which was tender and good taste, paired well with the mash potatoes. Previous reviews mentioned the little flies floating around and sadly yes they were bothersome at my table. Server was attentive and came by frequently.
