We sort of stumbled on this place while walking around Bar Harbor looking for a place to have lunch. The interior decor alone is worth a visit to this restaurant. It includes tons of travel / automobile memorabilia and is definitely a bit on the kitschy side. Mobile trains, vintage signs and antiques and more. Lots to see. As another reviewer commented -- I remember this place more for the decor than for the food. If you're into nostalgia - this is a "must see" restaurant. We were there a bit after the lunch rush and there really weren't many lunch patrons still in the restaurant. Service was very good / prompt and efficient, I had the lobster roll and my wife had the pulled pork - and we both enjoyed our lunch. The food was good but -- as noted above -- I remember the decor far more than the food. The restaurant was clean / the service and food were good. What a cute place this was! Lots of retro style memorabilia in what used to be a church. Still has the stained glass windows to prove it! We opted to try the local favorite of lobster rolls and blueberry pie. Having tried a lobster roll elsewhere and paying just as much, I found Route 66 gave MORE lobster and it was worth it! Blueberry pie came out with 2 huge scoops of vanilla ice cream. The pie was delicious and I would have liked a larger slice and less ice cream. Fun 50s music playing. 3 star restaurant regarding the food, an extra star for the amazing decor. The atmosphere was so cute, and there were so many antiques in the store that you felt like you were being transported to a different time. That was awesome :) As for the food, I had the chowder and the crab cakes, and both were somewhat mediocre. I was starving that day after a long hike in Acadia, so I was ready to devour anything and everything. That being said, the clam chowder was a bit too gritty for my taste. It felt like they prepared it from a jar. The clam cake was dry as well and a bit too pricy for my liking. I had the lobster mac & cheese. it was alright. the main issue with this place was the customer service. my partner and i are on a 4.5 month road trip across the US/canada. on 8/27 my partner lost his wallet. since we ate here 8/24, we went back twice to see if the restaurant had it. both times they said no. we offered to look for ourselves at the table we knew we lost it at, still they said no. so we left maine, on to canada, when we received a fb message that they found his wallet on 8/28. they found it in a spot next to the bench and the wall almost a week after we ate there. great! we offered to pay for fast shipping to get it to chicago, IL, by 9/10 where we would be visiting friends for several days (and it would be our only stable address until october). the lady who messaged us said "i can try to mail it but i'll be really busy." we let her know that this was VITAL as we had no ID, no credit card. we messaged her a few more times, still she replied with variations of "i'm busy." MIND YOU, THE POST OFFICE IS A 500 FOOT WALK FROM THE RESTAURANT. you're that busy to not take a short two minute walk to mail basically our livelihood? lol. we called to speak to the manager, but surprise, the person who messaged us WAS the manager. also, gave us LOTS of sass on the phone. anyway, so she didn't send it on time, even though she had two weeks to walk 500 feet. we are still without our wallet. it's somewhere in jew jersey with a family member. travel has been EXTREMELY DIFFICULT without an ID and credit card , especially when you're traveling :-) i would never eat here again. also, this is the only review i've ever written in my entire life. this restaurant has made our lives SO DIFFICULT. read more

Not a bad place, it's definitely cool inside. My husband and I ordered a beer each, which were yummy, though the selection was dismal. Then we ordered the Turkey Chili to go. That was just a delicious, well made chili. I definitely recommend the food. The cleanliness of the place left something to be desired, especially during a pandemic. We were out and about in bar harbor looking for a place to eat and we stumbled upon Route 66 restaurant. We started with nachos, the cheese that was used dried up very quickly and they topped it with large chunks of tomato and onion all cut in different sizes, the dough on the onion rings were completely raw and fell apart when eating, the fries were very soggy and covered in oil, very lukewarm, hamburger tasted as if it were frozen. The chicken and broccoli Alfredo was very bland, almost as if they refused to salt. The shrimp tacos were decent although overall very disappointed with quality of food, and total was 82 dollars for the three meals! Service was nice and staff was very friendly, although due to quality of food I do not reccommend. read more

My family and I went here while vacationing in Bar Harbor on our last night in town. We were attracted to its quirky 50's memorabilia decor and broad menu. The service was good! Jackie, our waitress, was very helpful and friendly. She definitely was attentive to our needs and wants that evening. Unfortunately, the food was mediocre. Three of us ordered the king hamburger. To be honest, there was nothing super special that made it stand out from any other burger I've had before. My mom, sister, and I all received fries with our meals. When we got them, they were cold and a bit greasy to my taste. We sent them back. I'm 99% sure that they were dumped back into the fryer. They came back hot, but even greasier than they were originally. Ew!! Out sever apologized and without even asking, she had taken 15% off the bill. A nice gesture for sure, but didn't make up for our overall disappointment with the food. To basically sum it up, this restaurant isn't horrible but it's not worth going out of your way for it unless you're into retro style decor... Which was a bit dusty too! read more

Stopped here for dinner on the last night of our Maine adventure. I'd had my fill of lobster rolls and wanted something "seafood" but different. Ordered a seafood Alfredo which was delicious. The sauce was very tasty and so were the generous lobster chunks, scallops and shrimp. A salad accompanied my entree. Yes, Route 66 also has lobster rolls in addition to a complete and varied menu. Amazing decor and great food Found this place tucked away between two buildings on Cottage Street in Bar Harbor, walked in and were met my the fascinating decor. Vintage toys and fifties memorabilia adorn all of the walls. Some of the booths have drive in movie theater speakers. Everywhere you look there is something to see. WOWZA IN MY MOUTH. Just has an absolutely fantastic dinner at Route 66. For one, the atmosphere is this funky, eclectic vibe with everything retro to the 50s thrown up on all the walls. For starters we had the most Devine and simple rabbit food platters with an exquisite bleu cheese. For dinner I had the surf and turf which was there large bag scallops and they're locally famous ribs. My gal had the some lobster dish and both were incredible! But wait, not only was the entree great, the blue berry pie and ice cream were the most flavorful thing to enter my mouth to that date. Definitely recommend two scoops of vanilla ice cream. A friend and I recently tried Route 66 for lunch. Now, there's no denying that the place is visually interesting. There is a lot of strange memorabilia from yesteryear hanging around each table and booth. It's diverting but at some point it's just more of the same. One of the more annoying bits is the music system, which is piped into each booth through an old speaker from movie drive-ins. Luckily the volume knobs still work, so we turned it down immediately. As for the actual meal, my friend ordered a mushroom swiss burger and I asked for the fisherman's special, a cup of clam chowder with a lobster roll. The burger had all of three mushrooms on it, which my friend mentioned just about every day of our vacation. It did come with fries, which were good; it was certainly something I could have used. The chowder was lackluster, not so many clams. The lobster roll was good, but it would have been even better with fries on the side considering the price. All-in-all, a mediocre meal in a rather touristy spot. It would probably good for kids, so take that into consideration. read more

The decorations are pretty neat, so much to look at. We went in with a large group where people were coming and going so it made the ordering a little confusing for the servers. Some stuff came out wrong, late or not at all :( I wasn't too concerned though because my lobster (yep, that's right a full lobster) was delicious and fun to eat. We started off with the nachos, don't pay extra for any meat you'll be glad you didn't pay extra for this plate of disappointment. Worse we've ever had. Do you know the difference between corn chowder and lobster corn chowder? Because they don't, maybe a lobster swam through the pot but I couldn't find any, but I did find a 1" hunk of something gelatinous that stuck to the knife when we tried to cut it. The kitchen could not identify it ( the lobster must of drop it on his evening swim). The waitress offer me a fresh bowl from the same pot, yea that's a good idea but they took it off the bill. The chicken fingers make mickeyD's look gourmet and the fried haddock sandwich with the obviously frozen processed fish wouldn't have been bad if the tarter sauce didn't look like is was old. But the good thing is we didn't have to wait in line. That should have been the first clue. Another plus is we hadn't had a bad meal since we got to Bar Harbor and this disaster was our last night. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt that it was early in the season and everyone's getting back into the groove. So none of the negatives were dealbreakers. The Cesar salad was swimming in dressing. Our friends ordered the Shore dinner. If you get the "lazy lobster sautéed in butter-- you might get 1 1/2 cups. And they charge an additional $5. What an unexpected awesome meal and an awesome place! This is the perfect spot for a slap of old-fashioned Americana. There's tons of memorabilia inside this once-converted church, complete with a vintage gas station, and a train that is set up across the top of the restaurant. The bathrooms are also full of great decor, from framed yearbook photos and magazine covers inside the stalls, so large dresses tacked to the door. This is the perfect place to get a nice juicy burger and some fries, but since I was in Maine, I still opted for the classic lobster roll with a cup of lobster bisque. It was delicious, and what I needed since it was pouring rain outside! Good comfort food in a great environment. Perfect for kids since it's colorful and plenty to look at, and the music is playing so the noise they make shouldn't bother other diners. I'm glad we chose this place- it was tucked in the back of the street, so if we didn't know we were going there from looking online at reviews, I might have missed it since it's set so far back. They were able to accommodate us immediately without reservations, which was ideal since we were standing out in the rain looking for a dinner place! read more

Been to Bar Harbor many times but it was only today that my wife and I discovered this absolute gem of a restaurant. From the moment we walked in we got a great vibe from this place. The food was top drawer as was the service. We started with a cup of clam chowder which was piping hot and filled with plenty of clam chunks - not loaded with potato like you find at many restaurants. For our main courses my wife had the Haddock Tacos - the best she ever tasted, (that's saying something because prior to moving to Maine we lived in San Diego for 35 years, and San Diego is the birthplace of fish tacos.) I had the Haddock Fish and Chips. Again the fish was cooked to perfection and tasted absolutely incredible. Fresh, fresh, fresh! That would the key word to describe our meals overall. The chips were cooked to perfection - crispy and not at all greasy. Nor did they have the plastic look of fast-food french fries which I think is a major turn-off when dining out. To top it all off our service was outstanding. Our server, Jesse W., was attentive and very friendly without being obtrusively annoying. At $70 we considered it good value. The only complaint we had was that we only found this place in mid-October - four days before the close for season. We plan on making this our go-to dining spot in the future. Waste of time. If you want tacky Americana decor go to an antique store, if you want real food go to a real restaurant. This is a poor middle ground. read more

Have not walked out of a place in a long time. My wife and I ordered 2 beers, 2 bowls of clam chowder and a lobster dip to share. Got the beers reasonably quick and that is where it ended. After between 45 and 60 minutes waiting we got up, dropped money for the beers on the table. Told the manager as we walked out. Will never return. read more

After having a disappointing time trying to get into another restaurant in Bar Harbor with a large group. We wondered down Cottage St and came upon Route 66 Cafe. The Owner hearing of our disappointment at another restaurant was gracious enough to turn on his street heaters set up some street tables. And accommodate our party. We came for a beer but stayed for the service! On one of our rained out hiking days we did a bar crawl of Bar Harbor. We were planning on eating else where so just sat at the bar and ordered drinks. Emily greeted us and she was SO NICE! We chatted while having our beers and then she mentioned they had fried pickles, so we placed an order to snack on. They were amazing! So crispy, the breading was light and the sauce was delicious! Still thinking we were eating else where, we glanced at the menu to kill our curiosity. Everyone found something they wanted and with Emily giving us such great local tips, we decided to stay. We all really enjoyed our meals, lobster quesadillas, fish and chips and the lazy man lobster. My friend got the blueberry pie and a milkshake which she raved about. If you are in the area, definitely stop in! The food is good and the decor is so fun.
