Glad to know that I can get a freshly baked donut any time of day with this mom n' pop 24 hr donut shop! Also give them props for having a private parking lot right out front allowing for a quick and easy snack stop. I've never been here in the day so can't say how the donut selection is then, but I once went in at 2am and although it was the middle of the night, there was still a good amount of classic/standard donuts (glazed, old fashion, sugar, sprinkle, etc.) to choose from that all looked (and tasted) pretty freshly made. Also had just-out-of-the-oven croissants that were buttery, light, and flaky as well as huge homemade bagels that come w/ different toppings (plain, sesame seed, cheese, cheese jalapeño) along w/ cream cheese. There was only one person working; I'm assuming the manager? He was very nice and attentive. Overall this is a solid local donut spot and if you ever find yourself in the area and craving sweets (at any time of the day!!), I highly recommend checking it out! It was bright and early in the morning. I would normally just be waking up, but I needed to make sure that I brought doughnuts. I'm glad that I came early, because that time of morning I had to wait a few minutes to get someone's attention, but I cant complain, because at least they were open. Everybody else always brings Krispy Kreme, but these donuts are so much better. This place does not sell Jelly FILLED donuts, they sell jelly Spread donuts. I said I don't want my donut cut in half and then spread the jelly and slap it together, the whole point is for it to be filled. Okay, it's not REALLY about the donuts at Royal and I wish someone would just call it like it is. The donuts are yummy, for sure, but it's about the atmosphere, which, every time I've experienced it - at 1, 2 and 3am - it's just weird. Weirdly cool and quiet but if you sit there a while the most freakishly interesting people come in (I guess I'm included in that right?) and there are folks who make up tiny little vignettes of strangeness that are super appealing to watch. The late shift bus driver, the gangbanger crew (what what glazed donuts y'all!), the prostitute running in for a quick snack between gigs, the drunk, the clubbers on their way home, explorers and more. 24 hours, freshly made donuts at approximately midnight, coffee and cocoa with free refills (usually), breakfast meals served until 2pm, a surprisingly clean restroom, polite staff and a pretty decent stop for studying or killing hours reading with NO pesky crowds! What else could you want from a donut shop? Especially in Daly City. I mean to be fair there was this one time where I was there with 3 other friends enjoying the FRESHLY made Apple Fritters having a nice chat late in the wee hours and 2 bloodied up teen-aged cholos came in without shirts, covered in blood with their girlfriends following behind with that scared and stupefied (why the hell am I here!? Why the hell am I dating this chump!? I can SO do better!) facial expressions on them. The smaller one demands that they use the restroom or he'll "start bustin' foo'z up in here!" and the larger and fatter one of the two also starts yelling at the poor guy behind the counter in what I can only decipher as "grunty chode bitch speak" because nobody could understand him. He pretty much sounded like a cross between Animal from the Muppets and Bobcat Goldthwait with peanut butter in his mouth. The guy behind the counter demanded that they leave and they do so but not before the fat one points with his sausage shaped index finger at the Royal Donut Employee and utters some sort of threat and wipes the blood he has on him all over the donut display case. So far, best chocolate raised donut in this area. It was so fresh and not too sweet...it even had a nice crisp around some of the edges telling me that it was freshly made. There'd be no crunch if it had sat around for awhile. I can't rate the other items, but their regular coffee combined with a fluffy, soft doughy goodness with chocolate icing and coffee in my mouth...it doesn't get any better than that! Nice parking lot for easy access with a new born baby to carry in for a dozen doughnuts for my co-workers. Super nice lady who helped me and when I told her I just wanted a couple doughnuts instead of the dozen, she insisted to get the dozen to save a couple bucks. Nice touch of honesty. I give them credit for being open 24/7 but it's like the donut selection is close to none in the evenings. My last visit in there took 7 minutes for the guy to realize I had been standing there waiting for service. And I had to go over the counter and yell hello.
