i'd rate Roys 4.5. What could be nicer then watching a beautiful sunset while having a wonderful meal. We enjoyed the prix fix dinner, the 4 course meal was a delight. The dinning room is large, and gets noisey when crowed. We arrived early so the noise level was ok, however by the end of our meal it was loud. There was a group of men, clearly on a boys holiday and maybe a bit drunk who most have thought they were at a ball game. Maybe the staff asked them to quiet down after we left. The only other issue we had was the glass of cab I ordered was served cold. A trend I suppose to save a few bucks, but when a glass of wine is close to 20 bucks shouldn;t be acceptable. read more

My rating reflects most on the ambience and location of Roy's. It is by Spanish Bay Golf Course in Pebble Beach. You are on the ocean, and there is a nice, large patio and lawn area where you can come early and have a drink, while enjoying the Pacific Coast. At sundown (or, around 6:30 p.m. during the summer), a bagpiper walks along the golf course and will by playing for the guests, as is the tradition on a links course. Everyone on the patio stops their chatter and starts filming when the bagpiper walks through. It is just a unique sight. To be honest, I think the food is very over-priced, and not overly impressive, but it is good. (Although, I did get major food poisoning after dining here years back with a fish entree flaked with crab; I haven't eaten anything with crab since). The entrees range from $40 - $121 each. I had the Salmon with Japanese white rice & citrus ponzu. It came with a small portion of broccolini, which was ok, since the broccolini was not great. I could have used more of the citrus flavor, and the salmon was fine; nothing exceptional. This cost $44.25, which was one of the cheapest entrees on the menu. I like salmon, and often choose it. I also refuse to order a $70 sea bass, or a $60 pork dish, or a $64 - $82 steak. They would need to be making the food much more amazing than it is to make me want to choose those items. The prices seem to be over $10 higher per entree than they were around 8 years ago. Their cocktails range from $17.50 - $24 each. Desserts are $17.50. I tried the mango cheesecake with pink guava sauce. I love those flavors. It was good, but again, not necessarily exceptional. Portions on entrees & dessert are small, so if one is very hungry, you should definitely eat someplace else. The reason I chose Roy's: 1) Celebrating a big birthday milestone 2) Just had several major family emergencies and wanted a special treat 3) I had been before and love the ambience & views & the bagpiper as something unique 4) Enjoy the access to drive the 17-Mile Drive when there is time 5) Had tried Peppoli's Restaurant that shares the same patio area, and was not impressed with their food, nor their views from indoors 6) Had reviewed restaurant menus of most restaurants in downtown Carmel, and none had stood out much with their offerings, and hate having inconvenient parking (Roy's has it's own lot -- it is free parking) For the food, I would rate Roy's a 3 (even a 2, if considering the price in that). Overall, I have a very nice evening there, mainly due to the view of the ocean, the nice patio seating outside beforehand, and the experience of the bagpiper as a unique twist. If ambience does not really affect you, and the taste of the food is your main priority, then you can get better food for a much better price elsewhere. If you have a large appetite, you might even leave Roy's hungry, as it is not large portions, and the vegetables were minimal and bland. I would recommend Roy's if you can afford it, and if you want to celebrate a special evening, or perhaps have some drinks and appetizers on the patio. I love being by the ocean and ambience outside with the sea air, fire pits, and bagpiper. If cost is an issue, definitely skip having a full meal, arrive during daylight, sit on the patio, and have a drink and split an appetizer, and then drive 17-Mile Drive. Often there will be a wedding or event outside the restaurant windows. It can be interesting for people-watching. I would recommend to Roy's Restaurant to re-evaluate the pricing structure, and possibly jazz up the food to meet the high value you are giving it, because you are really at a 3; the location and views bumped up my score. read more

Over rated. I don't mind paying top dollar for a restaurant especially for quality food. Yes the view was beautiful, the property is on Pebble Beach golf course. We dined here before heading back into town after a beautiful weekend with friends in Monterrey. They picked this location for brunch before our long ride back home. The menu is simple, they offer your traditional breakfast staples and a buffet(which if you're going to spend $36 for you might as well get the ribeye breakfast for $34) I ordered the avocado toast which was the most basic unflavored thing I've ever had. No creativity or flavor what so ever. I'm not an add salt to anything type person and I added salt. It was bland. Husband had a dish and he said it practically had no flavor and wasn't worth what we spent. Also, they don't offer a children's menu or even an option. So we got our daughter the fruit bowl since she didn't want anything else. Originally we were going to get her oatmeal and add berries. That would've been over $20. Like come on lol The staff was okay, he barely came to check in on us, I asked if they had lemon pepper or something that I could use to add seasoning to my dish and he said they didn't. Didn't bother to ask the cook or anything. This was a fail. On the plus the kids enjoyed their time playing outside and going for a nice scenic walk afterwards. read more

Time for dinner order, and of course I ordered fish, MahiMahi. Could not have been more dry! Literally had to take a drink of water with every bite Friends ordered desert and it looked yummy. However, never did the waiter ask how the meal was. I would have been polite, but would have expressed my my opinion on the MahiMahi. For a $600 bill I believe they should at least ask. Wanted to drive out a little and celebrate my mom's birthday. What better way than to celebrate it at Roy's! Booked a reservation about a week in advance and had no issues when being seated. The tables were spaced far enough such that everyone was socially distanced which is a plus. We started off with some appetizers, which were the calamari and baby back pork ribs. The calamari had a fantastic, seasoned crust as well as a fantastic dip that paired well. As for the ribs, they were moist and the bbq sauce they were smothered in was smoky and sweet! In order to get a good taste of everything that Roy's has to offer, we all got the bento boxes. I had the sashimi, tempura, and salmon. The sashimi had high quality fish meat and almost melted in my mouth. The tempura was nice and crunchy, without feeling too greasy. The salmon was perfectly cooked and might've made salmon my favorite fish. To end things off, we had the Kona mud pie and crème brûlée. Both were solid and were a great way to satisfy my sweet tooth. We started with the Roy's Pineapple Martini - tastes like I'm in Hawaii! Had the Coconut Shrimp and Soft Shell Crab Sushi - both were amazing, presentation and taste were spot on! For my entree, I ordered the Lobster Sandwich. Was disappointed and was more like a Lobster Roll. The Lobster meat was dry and tough - not what I was expecting! Came with a side salad of Spinach and shreds of Mango on top. Not mind blowing - kind of bland actually. My friend had the Bento Box with Teriyaki Chicken - she had to keep asking for more sauce. We ordered a bottle of Stag's Leap Chardonnay, too - delicious! Dessert was special - her birthday and server brought over a nice dessert tray saying "Happy Birthday". I had the Mud Pie which was ok. Our Server, Nino was wonderful as well as the others (Hostess & Manager who checked on us and chatted a bit). We did do a "to go" order for our loved ones - the Short Ribs was not worth it. Two tiny pieces of meat, 6 pieces of vegetable and a small tablespoon of Scalloped Potatoes (for $55 that's a hard pass next time). All in all, the location, view, ambiance, service was fantastic. One cool thing is that if you have a reservation at the restaurant, you don't have to pay to go on the 17 mile drive. We stopped by for lunch. We ordered the Szechwan bbq pork ribs. The sauce was so succulent and sweet. The meat was fall of the bone tender. The salmon had a wonderful woody tasting char. We also ordered the surf and turf. It was delicious. To cap off the lunch, we got the famous chocolate lava cake. This has to be the best dessert ever!!! It had a lovely raspberry sauce and ice cream. It's the best! The views of the bay is spectacular! The rain had stopped. The sun was out and lunch with an ocean view was on my schedule. Decided to return to Roy's at Pebble Beach. It was a fortuitous choice. We started with sushi..selecting the Lakanilau roll..an enticing melange of domestic waygu,Dungeness crab, panko asparagus and avocado. Wowza! Then, an appetizer portion of Roy's blackened rare ahi. I'm a sucker for lots of ginger and wasabi and Roy's did not disappoint. We paired this with the tempura vegetables and they served the entire patch. Light crispy panko covering broccoli, carrots, green beans and more. Even though the food held center stage, there was opportunity to take in the dramatic shoreline scenery. Golfers in the forefront and just beyond a crystalline wave breaking both ways. We finished up withCappuccino and shared a chocolate banana cream pie. Both were memorable. I should mention the service was impeccable. All on time and discretely attended to without a hint of hovering. I had low expectations because Roy's is a chain, but everything - I mean everything - from making the reservation to being seated to ordering to the food was fantastic. The dishes were really appetizing and while they weren't astronomically unique, they nailed the flavor profiles for each dish - and we had 7 dishes! They went the extra mile to make me feel extra special. They gave us one of the best tables (maybe they're all amazing!) with the fire pit with just 3 people, left a nice note for me to find upon sitting down and gave us a little birthday dessert for free. Roy's was a complete letdown on Saturday. My fiance and I walked in once they opened and asked if we could sit outside. The older Asian woman asked if we had reservations, and we replied that we didn't have one. She said we can't sit you outside, but we can sit you inside if interested because you don't have a reservation. That made absolutely no sense to me, considering the restaurant wasn't that crowded and they'd just opened. There were a lot of empty tables outside ready to be occupied. She said the earliest she could put me on the wait list was 7:00. Keep in mind it was 5:30 at the time, so I would have had to wait for two hours to be seated. She wasn't trying to accommodate us at all and made up a story saying every 15 minutes, the tables are getting filled. Which again didn't make any sense to me. At that point, it was clear it was a made-up story. We decided to go to Peppoli. It was easily the best decision because we had the best table in the house, literally. I'll post pictures below. What a beautiful evening. Our view was gorgeous. I ordered a bottle of wine and dinner. Their tiramisu was out of this world. We always get treated well there. We even shared our experience with a few other servers at the restaurant and they thought it was it was bizarre and didn't find it true as well. We met two beautiful couples that we ended up exchanging phone numbers with and shared our experience they too didn't believe the story. Nevertheless, I'm glad it turned out that way because we had a beautiful night. I'm a little sad that the location in San Francisco closed because I always got the best customer service from them. Oh well, it is what it is. Hopefully, she gets better training in the future, so this won't happen to someone else. She must have forgotten that there are other restaurants patrons can go to as they are not the only ones in Pebbles Beach. read more

Enjoyed the food here at Roy's, they have indoor seating and an outdoor area. We sat in the outdoor area. They have heating lamps when it gets cold and fire pits on the tables at the outdoos seating area. Spectacular view or the Pacific Ocean and the links golf course. The fare is Hawaiian fusion, so it's an interesting taste. Loved everything we ordered, had the Honey Mustard Beef Short Ribs, the kids didn't like anything on the menu, they had a salmon teriyaki, asked them if we could have it with Chicken instead, they obliged. My kids like it, ordered fries with that. For dessert we had the banana Cream Pie. My only complaint was the food portions could be bigger considering the price. Everything on the menu is expensive. Lol They service was top notch, we enjoyed gazing at the view while we had dinner. Took a walk in the path after dinner. Food is pricey, but it was worth it. The views are their main draw, and having a reservation for the chance to get onto gated Pebble Beach. Our server was just OK, a little tacky for such a great resort, by telling us they needed our table by a certain time especially when we had a large bill and we had to keep asking for more water. The sushi was not that great, and the other gal who didn't order food was told she had to get something, even if it was french fries, I guess it was ABC legality. The security was so tight at Pebble Beach with Covid, that as we left we weren't even allowed to stop along the 17 Mile Drive and take photos without a security vehicle appearing with flashing lights stopping us. If you're looking for a meal with a view, you really can't do better than Roy's. It was a sunny day when we pulled up for lunch, and the scenery from the dining patio is spectacular. It's probably best for outdoor dining in the shoulder seasons, March-May and September-November. My husband and I both ordered the bento boxes, as recommended by a family member. It comes with a miso soup, option of 4 or 5 meat/fish items, some poke, rice, salad, and a daily appetizer (ours was tofu). The miso was delicious, a truly elevated miso soup with plenty of tasty tofu and some seaweed. It had a brightness to it that most miso I've had was lacking. Really delicious. I got the butterfish which is quite subtle, but tender and tasty. My husband got the chicken and said it was just ok. The poke tuna was very good. The tofu was really savory, we weren't even sure if it was tofu or some kind of meat at first. It has a meaty bite to it. All together it was a nice meal. The entrées passing by had us tempted too, so I'm sure we'll be back sometime. The only downside was that the service was quite slow. There's elegant, take your time dining then there's "where did our waiter go?" Once we were ready to leave, we waited to flag them down for the check for a good 10 minutes, then they were delayed another 5 when someone's card wasn't working. My wife and I went May 15th for our 25th wedding anniversary. From being greeted at the door, walking in to be seated, every employee made an effort to greet us both by welcoming us. After being sat we were offered something to drink right away, which was great. We started with champagne to start the celebration. My wife and I started with two appetizers, Blackened Ahi & Hamachi Crudo. Both were off the charts amazing! AND I AM BACK! Tops to the waitress Cassandra & waiter Enrique - top notch customer service with great personalities. Highly recommend them as your waiter/waitress. I ordered the impossible burger - it was okay. Not much flavor and would think it would be a whole lot more flavorful because I have had vegan impossible burgers and one in particular was to DIE FOR. But that establishment is no longer around do to COVID. The Asian salad - OMGosh! Now there is some savory flavors all in each bite. The added paprika was a touch I did not see doing yet absolutely loved. The vinaigrette dressing... mouth watering. My chow mein - pretty darn good if you ask me. This location is my absolutely favorite from the other locations I've been to; Anaheim, California, Maui, Kaua'i, and a the Big Island... it feels like I am missing one but cannot put my finger on it... Might have to do an edit later on to update that list. I do wish however, they span their menu options like Maui and The Big Island even though they don't have a set menu for vegetarians/vegan. What was worse was that a group seated after us was allowed to move to the sun but we weren't. They never brought the table bread even though my wife specifically asked for it. I've been to a few Roy's (two in Hawaii & one in LA) and was genuinely surprised by the quality! This location is located in a hotel but has an extremely nice view & ambiance.
