We came here for my dad's birthday celebration. He wanted catfish, and I saw RT's on Yelp and made a reservation. The She Crab soup was very tasty, one of the best I've had. I also really enjoyed my Crab & Shrimp Ettoufee, which was a dish I had never had before, And I was very impressed! My dad really enjoyed his Catfish & Red beans with rice.. They also brought us a little dessert with a candle for my dad's birthday, which was extra nice! Would love to come back sometime soon! read more

Tried this spot based on yelp reviews. Quaint reautrant close to parking. Service was great, food was great and drinks were great! Highly recommend. I must say again that the service was excellent. I ordered some food from this restaurant thinking ok I will try something different! Please note that it was a BIG MISTAKE! To expensive for my order $100.00 dollars for some food I could have gotten at the grocery store! It was garbage. After all the great reviews we decided to give this place a try. Please keep in mind I looked all over yelp because my family and I are from out of town. After all the great reviews I knew that this was the place. Ugh NO Not sure what everyone see's in the place, or it could just be my taste buds. Overall I was not impressed with the food. read more

I've been to this place once before, a few years ago. Was craving gumbo, so decided to order takeout. If you're looking for a super authentic, dark brown roux kinda gumbo -- this is your spot. The crab and crawfish beignets are really good too. read more

Order to go. Was there before they said it would be ready but it was already on the counter. 5 min walk home. She crab soup was OK - nothing to write home about. $16.95 oyster po'boy had 3 oysters on it. Bread was soggy, as were the fries. My Zydeko chicken sandwich had a very thin chicken patty on it which would have been fine if they had reduced the cooking time along with the thickness. Dry as a bone and no seasoning. Onion straws were more like wimpy straws. Creamed spinach was good. Have not yet tried the Key Lime pie but am hoping for a better experience with the dessert from such a top rated restaurant. We love seafood so we knew we had to try this place. It was 9:00 on a Friday night, no wait. They do take reservations. We started with two appetizers. A special oyster appetizer. They were baked in a butter/cream sauce with breadcrumbs. We also had the crawfish and shrimp beignets. They were both fantastic. He had the pecan crusted haddock and I had the crab and crawfish imperial. Both were delicious. For dessert we had the bananas foster cake. It tasted more like a spice cake. It would have been great if they would have added some sautéed bananas over the top! Service was a little slow but overall it was a great meal. I would eat here again if I were in the area. Also, the area wasn't bad and we found parking right across the street. read more

Went for Christmas eve dinner. Place was full. Service was good. Food was fair but did not merit a return visit. Gumbo tasted too quiet, so not a robust flavor. It's not realistic to have seafood dishes that cost a maximum of twenty five dollars and have them be memorable, because the seafood will have to be reduced in quality or quantity or both. read more

We had heard good things about RT's for a while, but for some reason never found the time to go. What were we thinking?! Walking in is like stepping in time. The place is a little dated. Or a lot dated. But it gives the place a charm. When we went, it was full of regulars, which is usually a good sign that either the food is good or the service is good. We sat at the bar, and it turns out both are true. We had the Jack Daniels shrimp for appetizer. It was a little sweet, which I wasn't expecting. But it was really good. The bread they served was great to sop up the gravy. For main, we got the shrimp and crab etouffee. Sweet baby Jesus, it was DELICIOUS. That dish alone is enough to make me come back. For dessert we got the Cajun bread pudding. Don't get me wrong, it was delicious, but it was so rich that it kinda put me over the edge. I should have stopped with the etouffee and maybe ended with a nice bourbon or night cap. We'll definitely be back to RTs. read more

We came in this evening with a large party. Very pleased that they accommodated our party of 8 on a weekend. Seated promptly and service was excellent. The waiter was attentive and friendly. We had the entire back room to ourselves. The bad? The food wasn't seasoned at all and honestly wasn't good. The calamari wasn't crispy at all. The crab cakes were very flat and burnt. The catfish wasn't a large filet but a smaller nugget like piece. The fries were good but needed salt added. Overall very mediocre food. read more

Surprisingly good! Having traveled to NOLA many times, RT's is yummy! We ordered the mussels special, gumbo, she-crab soup, fried oysters and Shrimp & crab etouffee. Also ordered special blueberry peach pie and key lime pie. Even though key lime pie was heavy on the condensed milk flavor, still good! Everything was delicious and service absolutely fantastic! If you want great Cajun food and you can't get to NOLA, definitely come here! read more

I ordered delivery tonight- enough for 2 meals. The food is fantastic - she-crab soup, chopped salad, crab cake sandwich, and key lime pie. I'm very picky about crab cakes and RT's crab cakes are perfect - lump crab meat and all crab. The she-crab soup and most of the chopped salad will be tomorrow's lunch. The key lime pie serving is enough for 2 servings. read more

I will definitely go back bc they seem very nice, but the prices are quite high for what you get. Let me explain: I was at the bar waiting on a table, ordered a double. $20- this isn't DC, so I was a little shocked. I was seated within 20 or so minutes as a walk in. All the staff were very gracious, even though it was extremely busy- there was a large bday group in the back dining area. I ordered the shrimp and crab appetizer- It was tasty and the sauce went great w the bread that was brought out. I also had the shrimp n crab n Crawfish (I think?) ettouffee, it just tasted like gravy w a heavy hand for flour. Not my favorite. I also ordered the bread pudding w the chocolate mousse to go. Both desserts were pretty okay. Total bill for the food was $50 or so. Next time I'll go back and order the gumbo and maybe crawfish n shrimp just to try what they're workin with. Just a note: I was born and raised in Louisiana. Met a couple at the restaurant from Slidell. It was nice seeing fellow Louisianaians there- I think the bday party was mostly southerners too. One more thing: you guys should have community coffee. Ridiculous that you do not. It's not difficult to order. ‍ read more

I definitely give this place 5 stars. My friend and I came here on a Saturday for food and drinks. I posted the pics of the drinks. But I totally forgot to post pics of the food. My friend and I was so hungry and the food was so good. By the time we ate half our plate I was like dam I forgot to take the pics of our plates lol. I had the shrimp & crab etouffee. My friend had popcorn crawfish, fried brussel sprouts and creamed spinach. Oh we also had cheese fries as a appetizer. I didn't really care for those, but my friend did. So I guess you just have to see for yourself lol. But overall everything was great! read more

A visiting friend who stayed in Alexandria picked this place for seafood. We drove about 40mins in PM rush hour to get there. Lucky for me, a little homework and a phone call we figured out that they do have a big free parking lot (surface lot) right across the street. You will see in the back of the lot entrance it actually labels "for RT customers". I like their ambience and political comics on the wall. I ordered the seafood stew which tasted pretty decent. Overall a positive experience. read more

Best cajun/southern food in the area. I am so glad I came across this place. It is a bit pricy but we'll worth it. I highly recommend the she crab soup. I went there on a Friday night. The place was a bit crowded but the service was great despite the crowd. After the first few bites of food I understood why. The drinks are pretty good too. Not much of a drinker these days but would recommend their hurricane. If you like southern seafood look no further this place is definitely worth a shot. read more

We are here for the first time tonight, on the recommendation of a friend who has eaten here for years. The owner and staff are very nice and the service overall was good. We started with oysters which were good. The cocktails were good and reasonably like New Orleans. The main courses were shrimp etouffe, jambalaya, and catfish. The catfish was good and well cooked with good French fries. The jambalaya was underwhelming, and the shrimp tasted like plastic (although the roux/sauce was decent). The bread pudding was quite good. If they can get a little better with the shrimp quality, etc., we would be willing to try again. read more

Excellent lunch. Don't know if the Short Rib special today is Cajun or Creole but it hit the spot, if they are offering it just get it. My wife loved her crab and craw fish stuffed flounder. Some days are better than others, today was a perfect 10! Note to manager. Ger rid of the dead plants in front, not a positive welcoming impression. read more

I was a little suspect walking up to this place. There was alot of litter and general garbage on the sidewalk leading up to the restaurant right up to and against the door. Half the buildings around it are old vacant storefronts and there was a man nearby petting a lifesized babydoll. Inside was pretty different. It was clean, dark, lots of wood, and really interesting art on the walls, but it seemed to be from another era. The food is Cajun and really tasty. I got the ettouffe and was really pleased. I was a little surprised at the price, but the food WAS good. Other diners were dressed a little nicer like they knew this place was supposed to be fancy but other than the price I really don't see were they were getting that impression. read more

I opted for Vola's hot coffee, which just didn't taste very good, even when camouflaged with cream. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate fudge cake, vanilla bean trifle and Audrey's key lime pie. The chocolate fudge cake was very rich and very tasty. But even I, as a chocolate lover, would have preferred that the cake had come with some vanilla ice cream to balance things out. The key lime pie with Chantilly cream was good with a sharp lime flavor. I ordered the Vanilla Bean Trifle. This dessert came with a blackberry compote, Chantilly cream, whipped cream and a crispy thin butterscotch tuile wafer. The flavors in the trifle were great, but because the dessert was served at nearly room temperature, it wasn't very appealing. To be best enjoyed, this dessert should have been chilled.

She had no other tables but might not be her personality, which is fine. Knowing we wanted ice cream, we declined drinks, but the bar and its menu were pretty extensive. When we ordered, we landed on the fresh fish tacos and one of the best seafood linguines I've ever had. The sauce was light and didn't puddle at the bottom and was served with scallops, white fish, mussels, and shrimp. The fresh broccoli and grated Parmesan topped off an incredible choice of pasta! At the end of the day, we will continue to try other places in Old Town, but as long as they have that pasta dish, The Fish Market will always be in the running for a return trip!

Lastly, I wished the meal came with a vegetable of some sort. And I didn't see any sides to order from, and no veggies for apps. The meal was a bit disappointing, especially for the price point (which is different on the menu than what's on their website). My party was seated by the window but the internet still didn't work well. Had to request the wifi password. I didn't realize I had been here once before, for Mother's Day. But after this meal, I don't think I need to return.

The shrimp cocktail was nothing short of a rip off, $20 for 4 medium sized shrimp that weren't properly cleaned and not fully chilled; absolutely ridiculous. The oysters were very nice, fresh and only a bit briny, would order those again. For dinner, we ordered the salmon and the sea bass. The fish were both cooked perfectly. Both the sauteed spinach served with the salmon and the black rice served with the sea bass were beyond salty -- actually inedible. Service throughout the meal was fine but we found ourselves abandonded at the end. The server for our table, and those around us was gone for a long period and even the tables around us noticed his absence. We skipped desert. The check, including 1 glass of wine, and 1 coke, came to $140. I'm sorry, this wasn't even close to worth that much money. Perhaps the Wharf was just having an off night, but my impression is that this is a tired restaurant, trading mostly on its excellent location, that has given up on the concept of repeat business.

Also, a 25% gratuity was already added to the bill. Maybe that is why the service was lacking, because they already knew they were going to get 25% "allegedly". Honestly, I don't think I'll be back. This dessert came with a blackberry compote, Chantilly cream, whipped cream and a crispy thin butterscotch tuile wafer. The flavors in the trifle were great, but because the dessert was served at nearly room temperature, it wasn't very appealing. To be best enjoyed, this dessert should have been chilled.

Unfortunately, the experience went downhill almost immediately. When we walked in, there was no hostess to be found. After waiting about four minutes, she finally appeared and offered us a choice between a small table in the corner or one by the bar. Given how busy the restaurant was, we took the table by the bar. About seven minutes later, someone finally came by to offer us water and explained that our server was busy, but she would help us in the meantime. No problem. We ordered the Avo Goddess Salad and asked that it be split so we could share it. A few minutes later, our server arrived, introduced herself, and we let her know we had already ordered the salad and were ready to place our lunch orders. She was very helpful in guiding my wife toward the Old Bay Shrimp Burger. I was excited to order the Shrimp and Grits until I learned it contained Andouille sausage and, according to our server, couldn't be prepared without it. Since the restaurant highlights that everything is made from scratch, that surprised me. I ended up ordering the Ahi Tuna Salad instead. So far, so good. Then came the frustration. We spent the next 20 minutes slowly picking at our salad, growing increasingly hungry and confused. You know something is wrong when guests who were seated after you begin receiving their meals before you. Finally, at 2:10 p.m., our food arrived: my Ahi Tuna Salad and a Pulled Lamb Sandwich for my wife. Except my wife had ordered the Shrimp Burger. When we pointed out the mistake to what was now our third server, she quickly assured us it would be corrected. A few minutes later, our original server returned and took full responsibility. She explained that the lamb and shrimp items are next to each other in the POS system and she accidentally selected the wrong item. She assured us the Shrimp Burger would be out in two minutes and suggested we enjoy the fries that came with the lamb sandwich while we waited. Unfortunately, another ten minutes passed before the burger finally arrived. Here's where things became truly disappointing: the top bun was still cold--almost frozen. My wife ended up removing it entirely and eating the sandwich with just the bottom bun. At best, the Shrimp Burger was decent, but certainly not worth the wait and frustration. As for my Ahi Tuna Salad, it felt like something I could easily make at home, especially considering the $25 price tag. I'm also not entirely convinced the tuna was particularly fresh. I can't bring myself to give Matt and Tony's one star because the atmosphere is genuinely cool and inviting. So I settled on two stars--mostly for how I felt before the experience unraveled. And listen, I get it. Mistakes happen. We're all human. But as someone who eats out frequently, here's one piece of advice: when a restaurant makes a significant mistake with a customer's order, consider taking that item off the bill. Sometimes that gesture is the only reason a guest decides to come back.

My only complaint is I wish the bowl was a little bigger, but I'm guessing that's because it's part of the lunch special. The bathrooms were spotless, and I have to shout out whoever decided to put a full length mirror outside of them because that's the kind of detail I appreciate. Perfect for a quick fit check before heading back to work. I love when I randomly pick a restaurant and it ends up exceeding my expectations. Great service, good food, beautiful atmosphere, and a lunch special that's actually worth the price. Josephine is definitely a place I'll be adding to my regular rotation, and next time I already know I'm coming back to explore more of the menu.

I have been a loyal patron of your restaurant since childhood and recently decided to introduce my friends to your establishment during Alexandria's Restaurant Week. Unfortunately, our experience did not meet the high standards I have come to expect. Upon entering, we were not greeted by the server at the door but were instead instructed to stand and wait. Another party, without a reservation, was promptly greeted and seated. Once we were seated, my friend ordered the calamari but found the taste and texture unappealing. When she informed the server, the response was "why," leading to an uncomfortable back-and-forth. I intervened, stating that it is inappropriate to require a detailed explanation from a customer who does not enjoy a dish. The server then mentioned needing to inform the manager, as this was not standard practice. I ordered my usual favorite, the crawfish beignets, which appeared slightly burnt. Given the previous encounter with the server, I chose not to complain. When I inquired about a new dish on the menu, the server informed me that she did not know as she is a pescatarian. I had to ask another waiter, who also did not know, but he kindly brought the manager over, who provided an excellent review of the dish. My main course, the pecan-crusted chicken, was indeed a great choice. In summary, while the main course was enjoyable, the appetizers and customer service fell short of expectations. If you hadn't heard about R.T.'s, you probably wouldn't stop. The only impressive things about the place are the food, drinks, and service, but that's what gets me back to restaurants. This was my third visit to R.T.'s. I try to go there whenever it's practical when I'm in the area. It's usually full of mostly locals by 8:00 pm, so go early or make reservations. This time I had the Creole Caesar salad, Oysters Nezpique, and split servings of Coconut Cake Melvin and Bread Pudding for dessert. I drank an Abita Brown Ale. All excellent. I tried a little of their Louisiana green hot sauce on the Oysters Nezpique. I couldn't decide whether I preferred the basic flavor of the dish, or whether it was better with the hot sauce, so I did a little of each. The cornbread croutons in the Creole Caesar salad were a nice touch. read more

Have been dying for some really good creole and southern style food so I decided to check this place out. Growing up in the south, I am pretty snobby when it comes to my food. I have been to too many "cajun" style restaurants where the fish was frozen and the decor was the worst possible southern stereotype. However, I am very happy to say that I experienced none of that here. Sampled some of the fried oysters, catfish and a big ole plate of jambalaya. It was all fantastic. The only downside was I thought I was going to have to be wheelbarrowed out of the place because I ate so much. Can't wait to go back and kick myself for not having gone sooner. read more

There were 2 issues 1) I am acutely allergic to gluten and although I was assured nothing I ordered had gluten - there was a serious error somewhere. 2) We were a table of 6 adults, we were spending a lot of money, we were the last people in the place at 9.30pm (hardly late!) and were were shoved out without any politeness having had the lights turned on in there the moment the check was paid, drinks still not finished. I'm giving this review for the simple reason that they have the best soup I've ever had (it isn't even close). If you don't get the She-crab soup you should be put out to pasture. It's the identical menu to the Warehouse on King Street (which gets better reviews-I can assume because it's in a better neighborhood). I think the food is fantastic but the She-crab soup is perhaps the best "food" I've ever eaten. I've considered just going in and ordering 3 bowls and asked for a few baskets of bread to clean the bowl (I'm told it isn't polite to stick your face in the bowl and lick it). read more

The shrimp cocktail was nothing short of a rip off, $20 for 4 medium sized shrimp that weren't properly cleaned and not fully chilled; absolutely ridiculous. The oysters were very nice, fresh and only a bit briny, would order those again. For dinner, we ordered the salmon and the sea bass. The fish were both cooked perfectly. Both the sauteed spinach served with the salmon and the black rice served with the sea bass were beyond salty -- actually inedible. Service throughout the meal was fine but we found ourselves abandonded at the end. The server for our table, and those around us was gone for a long period and even the tables around us noticed his absence. We skipped desert. The check, including 1 glass of wine, and 1 coke, came to $140. I'm sorry, this wasn't even close to worth that much money. Perhaps the Wharf was just having an off night, but my impression is that this is a tired restaurant, trading mostly on its excellent location, that has given up on the concept of repeat business.

When we ordered, we landed on the fresh fish tacos and one of the best seafood linguines I've ever had. The sauce was light and didn't puddle at the bottom and was served with scallops, white fish, mussels, and shrimp. The fresh broccoli and grated Parmesan topped off an incredible choice of pasta! At the end of the day, we will continue to try other places in Old Town, but as long as they have that pasta dish, The Fish Market will always be in the running for a return trip!
