Khalid in the kitchen absolutely delivered and truly went above and beyond--the sweet potato California bowl was fresh, flavorful, and prepared with so much care. Plus, they had some killer beats playing which felt like a little bonus to set the vibe. You can really feel how much pride and attention the team puts into looking out for their guests, and it made the whole experience feel special. This Rubio's, like most Rubio's, is very hit or miss. I visited this location a few days ago to pick up an order that I placed online. To my initial delight, Rubio's now offers queso dip. I ordered chips and queso, along with a two taco plate. I had to wait a few minutes for my order to finish being made, which I didn't really mind because I assumed I was getting fresher food. The queso was a major miss. It tasted very artificial and salty, on top of being lukewarm at best. It was paired with only a handful of chips....not that it really mattered since I wasn't too interested in eating the queso, let alone finishing it. The taco plate was just okay. I ordered the Mexican street corn shrimp tacos. Despite requesting them on flour tortillas, they were on corn. Womp womp. The accompanying pinto beans and rice were also not very good, nor very hot. Andrew behind the register is a very nice and efficient young man. He's a great ambassador for this Rubio's. But there are still some issues after the change of ownership. We ordered 2 quesadillas, one shrimp and one chicken. We got them quickly which is a great improvement over the last owners. But both were only 3/4 filled. The outside inch of each was just tortilla. There was an adequate amount of chicken but there were only two shrimp on three of the four pieces. That made for several bites of cheese only quesadilla. The salsa bar was clean and well stocked. The tables have seen better days though. We'll continue to eat here as we have other favorite dishes. read more

I strongly suspect they're substituting Alaskan pollock in their Mahi mahi tacos? I get this meal once a week every week, so I know what Mahi tastes like, I know what theirs tastes like. This ain't it. It's thin, dry, and definitely not the correct fish. I was hoping last week was a fluke, that maybe they ran out and they substituted something in its place without informing (had this problem as well at this location) so I gave them the benefit of the doubt while I ate my too-fishy tacos. (Meaning, I didn't like it.) but, the next week, here we are again. I'll be escalating this to corporate because I know if I went to the store I'm sure they'd come back and claim it's Mahi and that I'm wrong. If this is their new normal, it's no longer for me. Shame. Fish Tacos were on point this Tuesday! I got a Fish Taco Especial. It came with 2 tacos along side of beans and chips. For the price it will do. Tacos were medium size and plenty of topping. What a mistake! Food was cold. Fish tacos, one was a fried dough with un edible burnt fish. The other taco had little to none tasteless fish. Chicken burrito had tiny pieces of chicken. This store needs new management. 1st visit: Short staffed, took 20 minutes for 2 fish tacos. 2nd visit: (waited 10 minutes at front door for them to open) Once inside, some guy with nose/lip rings says there's no food because staff and/or delivery truck didn't show up. 3rd visit: (my final time). Came at opening. Internet was down so they could only take cash. Online order customers were coming in to pick up but they didn't have any f the orders because internet was down. I ordered 2 fish tacos & fountain soda. The soda machine was down because they were out of co2. My fish tacos were 98% thick batter & way overcooked. Also restrooms were filthy. Alright, I tried the taco thing again. Again the app said my order would be ready in 15 minutes. Again the staff had my order ready in 4 minutes flat. This time, I ignored their estimated completion time (much like it seems the restaurants do) and headed right in. I really think they could do a better job of providing more accurate pick up time on the app. I do know the receipts show time of order, time of completion and estimated pick up time. Surely there has to be some algorithm they could create to provide a better estimated time for customers. If you wait 15 minutes to head in you're going to be disappointed with ice cold tacos. Moral of the story, the app estimation needs some serious help. Also in my previous review I was advised to follow a link to add more information to review and asked if I wanted follow up or not. I did elect for follow up and needless to say no one has. Seems to be more of a make work task for the customer as I'm not sure where that feedback goes or doesn't go. Update: I did hear from an area manager who said they would pass on the suggestion of updating the app to be more accurate with pick up times. This was our second visit this month to Rubio's! This is a different location because we were out running an errand in the area. This location was very clean, staff was helpful and prompt at getting our order out! We have been a bit nervous to return to dining in. It's been nice to go in to a clean establishment that's doing all it can to keep Social distancing in place to protect their patrons! Based on Yelp reviews, we decided to try take-out from this restaurant tonight. Ordering online was easy, the food was ready for pick-up at the designated time, and the veggie and chicken burritos were very good. We also ordered a Cilantro/Lime Quinoa bowl with chicken - disappointingly, there was NO chicken. The bowl contained cauliflower, black beans, avocado slices, red peppers, slivered almonds and roasted corn over quinoa and brown rice - no chicken. The cilantro/lime dressing was delicious. If we decide to give this place a second chance, we will most certainly carefully check our order before carrying it out and taking it home. read more

Previous visits have been great, but this time, I decided I was not happy spending $20 for rice. My California bowl was 3/4 rice - and with zero flavor I might add. I really enjoy the street taco plate here. Had a craving for one tonight, but it was pretty disappointing unfortunately. Steak was very dry and salty. Tortillas were tough. And it was barely warm. Cheese on the beans wasn't even melted. I should have taken it back. Wife isn't a big eater, and so I ate half of her quesadilla, which was hot and good, so 2 stars for that. My son and his friend sent me a special request of Rubio's quesadillas for lunch today. As I walked in I noticed Yelp had $2 off check-in offer, which they honored. It was still slow because it was still early in the day, and they made my order really quickly. The restaurant itself was very clean and the employees including the manager were very friendly. Not bad here...just not great either. Food: fantastic. Customer service: this location needs some help. Our meals took a long time by Rubios standards. I watched the kitchen staff here...seemed to be a lot of frustration and slow moving staff. Other diners noticed too. Two guests came in from the patio with their number trees to inquire about timing. The busser/server did an admirable job cleaning tables and delivering long awaited food...but passed on cleaning out the bus tubs overflowing with dirty dishes and the brimming trash can. We love Rubios, but this location needs a bit of a customer service/kitchen timing tune up from corporate. We might be back, but only for take out. Dining room manners need to improve here. Very disappointing - the quality appears to have changed. The shrimp is small, the burrito is too much rice and flour. We also the shrimp Mexican corn bowl- for the money highly disappointing - not much corn, small shrimp and too heavy on the rice. The avacado was brown too. I thoroughly enjoy a fish taco from time to time and where else can you get one in landlocked AZ? Look no further. Mind you, I don't classify it as Mexican food, rather baja style. At this particular location, they have deals prominently on the whiteboard in the front, which I've enjoyed on several occasions. One time they featured a three taco plate for less than seven bucks. Not bad when you're dining out in this area. If you join their email club, you can get cool things like free chips and guacamole. Flavor is good, but they always get my order wrong. I don't even know how it's possible. I recently ordered a California Burrito, no meat, add corn and onion. Simple right? I was in a rush and had to pick up my kids from school (they had no clue I was rushed by the way, in fact I was really cheerful and excited for my meal). I get in the pickup line at school and realize my burrito was ONLY corn and onion! It cost me $15. I called to let them know about the mix up, and they said "take it up with corporate". So I called corporate and they informed me I needed to write a complaint and they will look it over.... I just wanted my burrito to be fixed!! I wasn't even looking for a refund, just to have it made right. I was told they would not remake my burrito (even though I had the receipt showing my order and the uneaten burrito to show the mess up). Corporate eventually told me there was nothing they could do. I still like this restaurant, one mistake doesn't prevent me from coming back. BUT I ordered a meal for my family through door dash, the delivery person dropped it off at the wrong house (not the restaurants fault, just annoying), but an hour later once we figured out where our food was, the entire order was wrong. I thought it was someone else's order and they placed it in the wrong bag, so I called Rubios to have it fixed, and I got hung up on right before the employee said "not my problem".
